I dont rate Man Utd's squad at the moment I didnt think many people did really but I must have been wrong. Their strike force is strong but the defence is a shambles and Rio is way overrated IMO.

the defence is strong, but I agree about rio
the strikeforce is excellent
and the midfield is slightly weaker but still contains some of the best in the premiership and in europe...

where did it go wrong??

Hump-Backed-Tortoise
08-01-2005, 04:38 PM
Alex ferguson is quite obviously a great manager but I think a change of manager would refresh them and maybe give them a new lease of life they seemedover the last few seasons just to be going through the motions even in Europe etc.

Lord Abortion
08-01-2005, 04:42 PM
we'll see what happens, van der sar seems to have solved goalkeeper problems, not like that utter twat roy carroll, his showing in the cup final shootout was appalling, he just fell over instead of diving for penalties, VDS saved 3 pens last year...

Hump-Backed-Tortoise
08-01-2005, 04:51 PM
Van der Saar is a solid keeper yeah bit old though. Cech however :p

Grondahl

United's recent problems seem to me to be more to do with lack of squad depth more than anything. Unlike Chelsea, who have quality replacements in every area (Cudicini on the bench!), when one of United's big players get injured (Van Nistlerooy, Ferdinand, Keane), they just don't seem to have the players capable enough to replace them on a consistent basis. The likes of Phil Neville and Quinton Fortune, whilst being decent players, aren't quite the quality that a team like United needs if they're going to continue to compete on the European stage. Or even against Chelsea.

Lord Abortion
08-01-2005, 05:03 PM
yes, and the squad players bought are failures

miller, djemba djemba, kleberson, etc.etc.

a team where quinton fortune plays alot of games is never going to win the title,
I think that the board just won't release that kind of funds though

Hump-Backed-Tortoise
08-01-2005, 05:04 PM
Good point really if two defenders or midfielders were to get injured at once they'd be pushed to replace them with players who will have even close to the same effect. They would need about 5 strikers to be injured before they couldn't find a replacement though.

Yep, which is why I was hoping a lot of people from MX joined. I'd let somebody else run the league, I'm a newb and don't wanna seem obnoxious.

Would anybody be interested?

What do you have to do to run the league?

Are we going to set up a league.... is there a minimum amount of people that we need or something?

we would if we made another quality signing, a creative midfielder in the ballack, aimar, kaka, ronaldinho vein, and another quality striker, since as soon as saha returns from injury he will be sold I think and alan smith is going to be employed in defensive midfield...
so that gives us 2 strikers, 3 if solskjaer returns... nowhere near enough...
admittedly 2 of the best strikers in the world, but injuries will happen, so there is cover needed.
and we finally got rid of kleberson thank god...
so we signed van der sar to solve our keeping problems- a good move, and Park for... erm... I don't quite know, but he looks good, possible long term replacement for Giggs?

Preston draw 1-1 with Derby. From the sounds of it, we played some good football without creating many chances, but our finishing was poor when we did create a chance. Still, only drawing at home has to be considered two points dropped.

Sheffield United had a bid of 800k for Cresswell rejected by us. He isn't technically a great player, but you'd be hard pushed to find a player who works harder.

According to the radio commentators, Etuhu was in great shape. He always seems to be capable of playing well, but lacks consistency in his performances. If he can find that consistency, it won't be long before he joins a Premiership team.

And apparently Lee Camp made another howler for our goal. Deepdale seems a nightmare ground for him.

What do you mean what he has been given to spend?! That was just typical doug ellis fake promises he makes them every season, He promised £20 million to spend on players so far only about £2-3 of that has been seen and to be honest knowing the way villa do it were not going to see much else.

From what he spent though I think Kevin Philips was a bargain buy the jurys still out on hughes, berger and taylor though.

Anyway does anyone else agree that something has gone horribly wrong at Newcastle this season? We've sold like 8 players of varying quality and brought in 2 reasonable players, and 1 backup player. I thought that for Shearers last season we'd be firing on all cylinders, but no Graeme Souness has decided to give us a squad that has no backup in any posistion, no hope of getting into Europe, and a bottom half finish for certain! It was nothing, but because the ref was only on the halfway line, all he could see was 2 players jump up, and Neville go down. You cant blame him for playing it safe and saying it was a foul can you? Still it wouldnt have really affected the tie. Man Utd always had it in the bag. Still Rooney and Ronaldo looked great. Having now seen Arsenal and Man Utd in action I think that Man Utd wiull just pip Arsenal to 2nd spot now. Anyone agree, or same top 3 as last season?

Lord Abortion

If united can convert chances this season and avoid the plethora of 0-0 draws against poor teams when we batter them for 90 minutes like last season then we will fnish second, if we sign a creative midfielder and michael owen then we may well come first.

As was said in the commenary last night United and Chelsea looking at first 11's only are about equal
for example: ruud van nistlerooy and wayne rooney are much better than drogba and crespo,
however peter cech is better than Van der sar :upset:

Give the bloke a chance, first match for the team, he's bound to be a bit nervous. He only played, what, 20 minutes? to transfer players, login and go to the 'Transfers' link on the navigation menu on the right hand side of the screen. You get one free transfer per gameweek, after that it costs you 4 points per transfer.

To change formation simply pick the players you want to play in each position. For example, if you wanted to change from 4-3-3 to 4-4-2, you'd just drop an attacker and pick a midfielder instead.

Oh, right. I thought you meant your WHOLE defence was Chelsea.

I have Gallas, he got me 6 points. My highest scorer aside from Rooney, who got 12 (but is my captain so basically got 6 too).

I don't think Jermain Jenas deserved to be sent off. He was going for the ball, it was just a bit unlucky for the guy with the ball.

Meh, it happens at the start of every season. FA tightens the rules, referees go out all guns blazing, then all parties suddenly realise they're stopping people from actually, ya know, playing football.

i think that was fair enoguh to give that a red card, to say it shouldn't have even been a yellow just makes you look like a biased f'uck. His non-tackling leg came through and could've snapped Gilberto's standing leg. It also caused him to catch his right leg in the turg, which could cause serious ligament damage.

I was at the game.

went to the first pompey game sat yeh some of the spurs tackles against us were straight yellow card offences, yet the bald twat (ref) didnt give us any joy. We were ****e though and i wont just blame the ref and the rain :upset:

Ivan Campo's tackle against whoever looked bad to me this weekend, didn't get nothing neither

I remeber watching Liverpool - Sunderland game in their last season in the premiership, and Didi Hamann went in two footed on some Sunderland player, Yet won the ball cleanly and was sent off.

The English League definatly need to try the Digital Ref thing they have in Rugby at least for a season, cos so many Challenges have desicions wrongly put. And they need to sort out the whole two footed tackling rule

Twat_Out_Of_Hell
08-15-2005, 11:38 AM
two footed tackling is illegal, whether the ball is won or not it is a sending off offence. Nothing will ever be clean cut as rules are always open for interpretation. Dickov, Campo, Ambrose and probably Jenas too all deserved to be sent off

Mr. Black
08-15-2005, 12:14 PM
I still don't see the point in doing it if you win the ball, yet then again that may tempt players to do it more

I'm not sure really

Twat_Out_Of_Hell
08-15-2005, 12:20 PM
but two footed tackling means that you could get the ball with one foot and break the players leg with the other. Plus two footed tackles tend to be lunging and players often go over the top of the ball.

They are generally cowards tackles

Ganondorf
08-15-2005, 01:26 PM
Two footed tackles risk players safety, that's why they're illegal. At the end of the day they know they shouldn't be doing it and get sent of if they do.

bollocks. it was a perfectly legal tackle and ONE footed and didn't even deserve a free kick let alone a red card. that the ref has reduced it to a yellow is as good an admission that he got it totally wrong. i wouldn't expect such a pompous prick to admit he was wrong totally but to reduce it to the yellow is as good as. he got the ball and then took the player too, as you should with any well timed tackle.
and to say that giberto went down easily and rolled around like a large bundle of sticks would be understating it slightly.

but it's all after the event, if it hadn't been for such a ridiculous decision we'd have probably got something from the game.

see below for a coherent and humerous report on the issue, from nufc.com:

New card dealt for our losing hand

The FA confirmed on Monday that the red card incurred by Jermaine Jenas at Highbury has been reduced to a yellow - and that referee Steve Bennett apologised to the player, his manager and the Newcastle players by letter.

As yet though the arrogant w*nker has failed to apologise to the Newcastle fans who had their day wrecked by his poor decision - no apology either from the linesman and fourth official who both had a clear view of the incident, unlike Bennett.

No word yet on the shade of yellow of this card - an issue which seemed to interest Arsene Wenger judging by his post-match comments:

"It looked to me a dark yellow or a clear red"

This is the fourth instance we can remember of a red card awarded against a Newcastle player being withdrawn:

Gary Speed v Aston Villa (h) May 2001 - Another bloody Orpington official, Barry Knight - what is it about that place?

Alan Shearer v Charlton (a) December 2001. Having made the long journey from Essex, Andy D'Urso left his calling card.

Craig Bellamy v Arsenal (a) December 2001. Graeme Poll popped down from Tring for the evening and was suckered by Ashley Cole's dying swan act.

Jermaine Jenas v Arsenal (a) August 2005.

PS - Bennett's decision is also a custard pie for the three wise men of Match of the Day 2 - Adrian Chiles, Graeme Le Saux and Bob Wilson - who were unanimous in their support for the red card.

Skysports were rather more even-handed about the incident.

FINALLY UNBANNED!! :naughty:

Would a premiership predictions league be popular on here? If we all did what Iai did and predicted the weekends scores, would a lot of people take part? Same amount of people that are doing the fantasy football would be a decent number.

What you'd all have to do is just predict the scores in each weekends premiership game and if you get the result right (eg. away win, home win), you get 3 points. If you get the score exactly right, 5 points. I'd do all the points adding up and stuff.

Anyone interested?

He went down easily did he? Do you want me to sythe you down and then have a go at you for not staying on your feet? Look at his facial expression as the tackle is made, and then try forming another opinion that would make sense.

The tackle was made initially with one foot, however the tackle became illegal when he brought his non-tackling foot through and took gilberto out at the knee. I feel that Bennett buckled under the pressure imposed upon him, at least as many 'experts' have deemed it to be a red card tackle as have said it isn't.
