True, but it can't really be called the Champion's League when the 6th place tea m are in it either. At times I wish they'd go back to just the actual league winners, or at least scrap the "Champion's League" name. Odd that they changed the name around the same period they started to allow non-Champions in.

it's the best teams in europe in theory. The elite leagues like Italy, England, and Spain (which, in spain's case, i disagree with) are awarded with 4 places from the top 2 qualify automatically (you have to keep in mind that qualification for the CL is not the CL itself) and then france and Germany have 3 places (top 2 once again qualify automatically). This is because say Juve plays against Mitdjylland or Aarhus, or even the Georgian champions, it will be a blowout. However, all winners of their leagues have some sort of chance of qualification at least. Besides the fact that i think that Germany should be awarded a 4th spot rather than England a 5th, it's relatively well layed out. For teams that cannot match up to the CL level there is the Uefa cup and Intertoto cup, which still allows them a taste of european football.

I think Germany is ready for a 4th seed in the CL because if you look at Werder Bremen, their massive profit on the CL this year has allowed them to possibly win the bundesliga next year by acquiring many key players. Just 3 years ago Werder Bremen was fighting to stay in the top flight but now they have established themselves as a big team in germany with the second or third highest payroll, successive seasons qulifying for europe, and a bundesliga title in the midst of it all. Allowing a 4th team would see an exciting brand of football become more and more competitive.

Ganondorf
05-09-2005, 11:23 AM
What exactly is the InterToto Cup?

sting-ray
05-09-2005, 11:52 AM
its an odd competetiton... you often get 2nd division teams in it. Its has 3 eventual winners that participate in the Uefa Cup. The aim is to enable the weaker teams to try out european competition. In other cases, big teams like Borussia Dortmund that won't even qualify for the Uefa cup and are desperate because of fianancial reasons, will try to get a place in the Uefa cup.

Rancid Dan
05-09-2005, 12:12 PM

haha i know the feeling.. werder bremen looks like they'll get a Uefa cup spot at most.. the Uefa cup isn't even televised here.. and there are many unknown teams that participate.. the only chance is to win it all and play the european supercup against the winner of the champions league.. for some sort of consolation. But still it's a bitter feeling to qualify for the Uefa cup rather than the CL.

Rancid Dan
05-09-2005, 12:27 PM

Fergie needs to get out now. This is not good enough. We need someone with new ideas and a fresh approach. As much as Fergie has accomplished, and however good he was, it just isn't good enough anymore. 18 points dropped against sides in the bottom half of the table? It's a joke.

Rancid Dan
05-10-2005, 04:09 PM
Blame it on your players, not him.

jaymz_is_god
05-10-2005, 04:18 PM
I blame Fergie because it was him who brought the players to the club, such as Kleberson, Bellion, Fortune (how he is still there I do not know) etc. etc. If he had've brought in some talented footballers, we could maybe be challenging Chelsea. The only 2 good buys Fergie has made in the past few years have been Heinze and van Nistelrooy, and possibly Ronaldo, but he's been too inconsistent to be considered a good buy at £12m, and £30m was far too much for Rio. Rooney hasn't made enough of an impact yet to justify his price tag. It's a pity we don't have much money this summer because if big improvements aren't made, I'm afraid we might slip further behind Chelsea.

Kickflip_Burrito
05-10-2005, 04:46 PM
I sorta agree with you jaymz, Fergie really does need to buy some established world class players. Rooney is just settling in, in my opinion. He'll find his form next season.
Its sad to see Alan Smith not being given a large share of matches, when he's on top form he plays so well.

Just seen the score, 3-1, wow, Chelsea still pushing even after winning the title.....or were United just that crap tonight?

Britney Diva

All those players are talented, but sometimes players just don't fit in. Others are just overrated sacks of **** like Rio "I can pass the ball but don't ask me to defend a corner" Ferdinand.

Ronaldo - Inconsistent, yes, but he's a tremendous talent, and has improved immensely in the two seasons he's been at the club. In 5 years he'll be at his peak, and United will be very pleased to have him.

Rooney - Of course Rooney's done enough to justify his price tag, his existence alone justifies it. He's the best player England has produced since Gazza, he may even be better with time. Against Chelsea today he was the only player who looked like he wanted to win. Once again, in 5 years...

Rio - shoot him.

Britney Diva

They do, but England's work permit laws are very strict. He needs to have played 3/4 of his country's international games in the last year or two, and he hasn't. Supposedly, Chelsea are trying to organise a German passport for him, as he's lived there for quite a few years now.

mourinho can **** off...

this comes into the "lowest I've ever felt football-wise" category

how poor was the second half performance??

Rio- "the best defender in the world" according to his agent - if he had told a more blatant lie then he may have spontaniously combusted...

rooney is brilliant, as is ronaldo, everyone else has been terrible recently (bar heinze)

I wish we had kept veron, he was just getting into his stride and could actually pass the ball...

the board MUST pay out or face another season of this piss poor football
and by pay out I mean about £50 million for a new striker, defensive midfielder, goalkeeper and attacking midfielder.

suggestions- aimar, casillas, torres, joaquin, van der vaart, rosicky, schweinsteiger, pirlo, gatusso, buffon, martins,

we don't want "potentially good" we want quality players

Well...that was the worst united game I've ever been to see...I figured as much when I saw a 4-5-1 formation again with Ruud as our frontman...sure he scored...but 4-5-1 doesn't work...we need two upfront...when we have rooney, smith, saha, ruud (when on form...which isnt now....smith should of started) we can't just play one of them...these are meant to be top class strikers..if so why don't we try playing them :) People were chanting for fergie to bring smith on halfway during the game...so he bought saha on..didnt make much difference...we actually looked like pulling it back to 2-2 at some points

But then..in comes van nistelrooy...running to the left of the goal, gets tackled..throws himself down dramatically..next thing you know lampards crossing it and its 3-1 chelsea :) Cheers ruud.

We were doing fine with rooney and smith upfront...the milan game where ruud was rushed back threw us off....meh terrible season, if we play like this against arsenal...goodbye FA Cup

Bring on next season...

Oh well United are screwed, Glazer gets in huge dept in loans to buy united, gets out of his loan through united...and hopes to become rich....he doesnt follow football, and i dont even think he understands it...the american football team he owns finished like near bottom last season.....we're screwed....Atleast chelsea have someone who genuinely wants to help the club..

upthebracket
05-12-2005, 03:58 PM
I'm not a Man U fan, so I'm pretty neutral on this, but I don't think Glazer will be as much of a disaster as people might think. He's a hugely successful businessman after all, he wouldn't buy the club if he didn't think he (and the club) could profit.

Kinda reminds me of when Fergus McCann took over at Celtic. Didn't know the first thing about football or Celtic, but he took us from the brink of bankrupcy, and built us a 60,000 seater stadium, and left with a tidy profit.
Either way, the numerous death threats I've heard about from Utd fans (some directed at TalkSport presenters for some reason) have been out of order...

edit: Also, after he bought his Tampa American football team, he wasn't too popular with the fans, still they won the Superbowl, so he can't be that bad.

This is the opposite situation. Utd are in a very comfortable financial situation, and if Glazer's plan doesn't work out, the club could potentially go under. He's borrowing hundreds of millions of pounds and using the club as security.

As soon as glazer puts his debt onto united, thats 240-560 mil of debt...he'll raise ticket prices, and then to make it sound like he's doing nothing wrong will announce "Well i'm only bringing the prices up to match the other top premiership teams like arsenal and chelsea".

Then he'll probably pay for mutv to show all uniteds matches live, champs league, fa cup and prem etc, then force sky or bbc to pay if they want to show the games themselves, which would get united alot more money...which he could do if he made the club a private affair...meh It could go really badly...or it could actually go well...if this plan goes through, united would be making more income than ever before, because at the same ticket price as chelsea, fans will still pay...filling the ground every game, he could make a lot of money.

Also he's not stupid, he's in it to make money, to make money united have to be successful, so he'll have top range coaches and everything assisting him...and he'll bring in a new manager, rumour has it fergies retiring after the FA Cup final now...meh

It could be good it could be bad..the next 3 years will be highly significant...

Glazer took the Tampa Bay Yuckaneers and turned them into Super Bowl champions, so it's not like he's some schmuck who ruins teams.

Thing is...if premiership teams break away from the grouped deal, because to be fair..they shouldnt bunch a group of companies together as a single unit and offer them television rights, so teams will demand rights individually from tv...which would mean disaster for smaller teams...think about it....Man United vs Arsenal...or Wigan vs Southampton?

The only guarenteed high payed teams would be the top 4 or 5...rest would be worse off than ever

I'm the biggest hannover 96 fan that i ever was at this time. If they can manage to tie or beat Hertha bsc Berlin, werder will be through to the CL next year

the playoffs, although exciting, are so wrong. Ipswich finished a clear 12 points clear of WH this season, and still WH have the opportunity to go into the Premiership

Nugent who plays for Preston is a quality player. I was impressed with him when I saw him play for Bury earlier last season

Ouch.

I so badly want Man U to win tomorrow. And Arsene Wenger to get shot and killed. By Malcom Glazier. No, wait....by Theirry Henry, who then rips his shirt to reveal a Man U shirt, and celebrates with a merry dance with Malcom Glazier.

I'm an Arsenal fan but I reckon United will nick it, I can just see the Gunners bottling under the pressure.
