My god, that was the worst perforamce I have ever seen from anyone, not just Newcastle. And if you ask me it's not the players, it's the way they are being managed. We're going to be lost without Sherear next season.

If they want someone in Shearers league, they are going to have to seriously spend. strikers dont come cheap anymore.

Very true. Even not very good players are sold for way too much money. Doesn't anyone think Kluivet (if he gets back to his best) is good enough to replace Shearer?
Rancid Dan
02-18-2005, 03:54 AM
I thought Kluivert played well in the 2nd half and set up both of shearers chances.
Kluivert said that he wants to stay at Newcastle past this season, which i want as i think he's a top quality player.

No I don't think he will be, we need a younger player to replace him, some one around 25. A decent amount of experiance, but young enough to have a good 6/7 maybe's more years at the club, and become the legend that Shearer is. (not that you can replace him, but it's always important to have that type of player at a club, in the past it's been the likes of Jackie Milburn for us)

Yeah, I don't think you can critise Kluiverts performance last night, he didn't score but he made sure others did. The way he held up the ball in the run up to Bowyers goal was really good, and for the most part of the game when he was playing through the centre, he did well playing a lot of balls to Sherear and Ameobi, and also winning a free kick now and then
Rancid Dan

Yakubu would be a good buy, and i'm pretty sure he will join us in the summer as he's unhappy at Pompey and he's only 22.

I didn't realise Shearer was so old... but now I think about it he's been around forever... I always thought of him as just hitting 30. Seems I was wrong :( same as I always think of Michael Owen as an 18 year old.
I would say Defoe would be the ideal replacement... but I think Man U have him pretty much wrapped up...
Rancid Dan

IMO Yakubu is very overated. Granted he scores goals, but the marority of these are tap ins or simple goals. If he didn't have the service that he gets (suprisingly at Portsmouth) he'd get loads less goals.
I know what you mean about ages. I still see Neville Southall as in his mid 30's and slightly chubby, when in reality he's in his 40's and is a big fat bastard

I have always rated Shearer as one of the best strikers ever, I remember watching my first football match, The first game of Euro '96 and Shearer scoring the first goal in it. He will be virtually impossible to replace.

02-18-2005, 09:14 AM
Good result in the end for both English clubs last night, obviously a bit better for Newcastle given the winningness of the game but GAK have a pretty terrible away record in Europe compared to the home record and 'boros is so far unblemished. Looking forward to watching it next week, should be good. It was never a free kick for their second goal though, utter disgrace.
Also one of the linesmen in the Newcastle game actually lives in Whitley Bay despite his Hungarian origin good thing there were no contentious decisions for him to make...

John Barnes presenting Channel 5's football sums it all up. He probably doesn't do it anymore, but it still sums up Channel 5's football. Jonathan Pearce also... and now he's on the BBC every week (I think).
Best commentator would have to be Archie MacPherson. Anyone who's had the priviledge of hearing one of his 'wooooof's would agree I think

What does everyone think of the FA Cup this weekend?
My picks are in bold:
Arsenal v Sheff Utd
Bolton v Fulham
Charlton v Leicester
Everton v Man Utd
Southampton v Brentford
Burnley v Blackburn
Newcastle v Chelsea
Tottenham v Nottm Forest
The only shock I can see happening is in the Leicester-Charlton match.

Yeah I pretty much agree with that, I think Charlton are a better team than Leicester, but then again its the cup and there isn't a huge difference in the leagues.
Don't rule Newcastle out completly, until 10 mins into the game and we're down 1-0 to a Robben goal lol. He's not playing though I don't think, or is he?

Yeah, I know a few people like that. There's a local team in Belfast called Linfield and they won the league last season. Before they won it, there was about 2 or 3 people who supported the team in my year at school. Since then, there has been a dramatic increase in the amount of 'fans'.

Speaking of academy's, I dont understand why the rule that a team must have 2 players out of 25 that came from their academy, because sometimes the player can be foreign anyways, and also match days only include 16 players, so what will it matter if 2 out of 25 came from the club?
*that rule is yet to be confirmed.

Royal Antwerp. We have a Chinese guy playing there now called Dong Fangzhuo. He's meant to be class, but unfortunately he couldn't get a work permit, so he's gonna stay in Belguim until he can either get a Belgian passport or gets enough international caps.
metal-militia

Thats a crap rule, they shouldn't bring that in. That means you would have to choose 2 people that could be completely useless.
What does everyone think of the Arsenal foreigner squad. Personally i'm not bothered if a team doesn't have an english player in it, it doesn't really make a difference.
ChodaBoy
02-19-2005, 05:12 PM
nope me either, they complain that the international squad will be crappy, but if most players are english, they cant possibly keep up with the competition from europe. so by making the teams more 'english' there will be no english teams in UEFA cup or Champions league. therefore they've dug themselves into a hole.
jaymz_is_god
02-19-2005, 05:13 PM
For once I actually agree with Wenger. He is the Arsenal manager, not the England manager. It is his choice who he puts on the pitch.
metal-militia
02-19-2005, 05:22 PM
Exactly.
On Sky Sports News they showed the teams that had the most British people in their squads. The 2 top teams (Norwich, Southampton - woo go us :) ) are coincidently in the relegation places in the prem, whilst Arsenal playing 0 English players are at the top. Tha poves what Chodaboy was saying, and that having a squad based on UK players will never be as good as a multinational team.
ChodaBoy
02-19-2005, 05:29 PM
Too much was made out of the arsenal game, that was just a one off i think. Arsene Wenger should be allowed to play who he wants, also what the media didnt say was how some of the most important players for Prem teams (who play nealry every match) are from England, Ireland, etc. Arsenal - Campbell, Cole. Chelsea - Terry, Lampard. Man City - SWP, Dunne. Man Utd - Giggs, Scholes, Keane. etc.

I also just read that Youri Djorkaeff has signed for New York/New Jersey Metrostars, my god hes desperate!
jaymz_is_god
02-20-2005, 04:53 AM
Woodgate hasn't even got a match yet. He's been pretty unlucky with injuries. I still don't understand why Real bought him. Sure, he's a good defender but they probably could have got better for £13m. I'm not sure about Gravesen. He is the type of player they have been missing but I don't know if he'll be able to cut it.
Last I heard, Djorkaeff was playing for Blackburn, but I never actually seen him play.
The biggest waste of money I can think of is El-Hadji Diouf. Liverpool paid £10m for him and he only scored 2 or 3. On top of that, he is a diving and spitting scumbag. Oh, and Kleberson. We paid £6m for him 18 months ago and he hasn't done a thing since arriving.

With the 13m they got for Woodgate, they spent it on Amdy Faye. What about the rest? that money could be very handy in finding a replacement for shearer, a player of his quality wont be bought for 9m, but they will have some more cash.
Btw, i was very shocked (and humoured) to find out that despite Man City's 62m debts, they are the 16th richest club in the world!
This is because the money that makes it look like debt is like a mortgage so they pay it off every so often. they have had massive turnovers for the past few years mainly because of the new ground and the money they have gotten from the 13,000 more fans that turn up on match day.

Did anyone notice when the guy came on at the end the police couldnt catch him. maybe they should really re-think the uniform they wear if they need to chase someone, this would also apply on the streets - you cant catch a Nike Shox wearing Chav stealing a car radio or 20p from an old lady if you are dressed like Robocop.

Watched the highlights of the matches. Kris Commons was so unlucky at the end, and he looks like a good player. Chelsea looked fairly average, and it was funny seeing Johnson (the most overated young defender EVER) get stuck in goal :p

Im not entirely sure why snooker is considered a sport, along with darts, golf, hunting (BOO those d'icks that like it), and archery.

Going back to the Newcastle game, I don't think I've ever been happier then when Kluivert scored that goal. My whole living room exploded with cheers, it was great

We didn't steal the win, we out played them.
So they had 1 less man, afterall they are "the great Chelsea" and surely they should of been able to score in the first 50 mins with 11 fit players.
Kluivert is going to be a great player and a new tyne-side hero.

I looked at the clock and it said 84:32, and i nearly collapsed i was so nervous, coz i knew that if anyone was gonna get a goal that late it would be chelsea, but thankfully (and gratefully) Newcastle hung on to win it.
Btw (my last point about snooker, sorry peeps). I walk to the kitchen, bathroom, living room every few minutes but i dont win £25,000 for it.

To be fair though, Duff was limping around for quite a lot of the second half.
Anyway I don't think it was that much stolen anyway, we deserved to go through to the quaters, we never win anything and try so hard. Sherear espically deserves to win the cup

Anyone ever ran onto the pitch? I would like to do it at the end of the season, but the boring farts that the FA are ban it and fine the clubs if anyone does it nowadays, i was annoyed with that coz i used to be on the front row so I would have been able to run to the players quicker.

I've always wanted to run on. Hopefully i will go to 2nd last game of season (Palace vs Saints), and we will win and stay up and everyone will run on the pitch :D

At the last ever game at Maine Road *cries*, everyone ran onto the pitch, even though the stewards tried to stop the fans (34,000 fans to 1500 stewards?!) and my uncle stole some of the turf, the 4 seats that he and his family sat on from the season tickets (which are now screwed to the garden wall!) and the sign from above the toilets saying "Gentlemen".
How he managed to get the seats out through the turnstyles i dont know.
