Soundgarden's "Superunknown" is an album that catapulted the band into "known" status after getting some attention with 1990's "Badmotorfinger." This is an essential early-90s album, often grouped with Nirvana's "Nevermind" and Pearl Jam's "Ten." But Soundgarden was far beyond the general feelings and talents of the "grunge" scene; their sound was darker, spookier, and more complex. And unlike the beloved Kurt Cobain, this band had great singing AND guitar work. The theme of this album is along the lines of a band's journey into stardom and the perils, decisions, and prices to be paid for the high cost of fame.

The album title has a hard-to-describe meaning, much like the band itself. "Superunknown" seems to refer to the sort of status a band has where it's on the tips of the mainstream media's tongue, but it hasn't quite proven its marketability yet other than the fact that it's really good music. Modern examples are Wilco, Flaming Lips, or The Mars Volta. They have a certain buzz around them that has all the music magazines talking, but either their image is too "different" to be marketed toward the pop music markets, or the band simply doesn't make videos for MTV and/or VH1. Either way, Soundgarden soon overcame that status and became part of the popular music world we know today. This album even made the Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time list, at a respectable number 336.

Here are some of the most memorable tracks of the album, and I say that because I don't have the album on hand, but these are the tracks that made the most lasting impression after I was done listening to it:

Let Me Drown: This is the opening track. It's one of my favorites because the great, unholy singing of Chris Cornell first implants itself into your psyche when he tells you "Let it go-oh-uh-ohhhh!" There's also a lot of rumbling bass in the beginning of the song, I think. The important thing is: this track rocks. It should have been a single, but I guess almost any song they would have chose could make this album a phenomenon.

My Wave: This is probably the most upbeat song on the album, because Soundgarden knows not the word "upbeat." The guitar in the verse is very present, and the chorus is not your typical Cornell chorus because he's not shouting at the top of his lungs for once. A very good song.

Fell On Black Days: One of Soundgarden's singles. You've probably heard it before, and it's not as loud as most of their songs. It's more subdued, and I don't think it's very special for a song they put on the airwaves. Then again, they could have just been trying to blend in...

Superunknown: The title track of this album is by far my favorite track on the whole album. The guitar work is a series of diddies in the verse, and the verse itself is structured so that the end of every line has Cornell screaming in the way he does better than almost anyone I've ever heard. ("...it doesn't mean you're BLIIIIIIIIND" "...it doesn't mean you've DIIIIIIIIED"). If you don't have the album, download this track to tide yourself over. You can't wait for him to finish the chorus the second time through with "SOOOOOUUUUUUULLLLLLLL... unh."

Black Hole Sun: This is Soundgarden's most famous song, thanks to a creepy video I remember seeing as a younger version of myself (kid). The chorus singing does NOT showcase Cornell's vocals to his best ability, but it did provide music journalists with a reason to classify them as "grunge." Not their best song, but the slow guitar riffs in the verse are nice.

Spoonman: Another famous single, and one of my favorites on the album. Not only is this song also upbeat and strong in the guitar department, but it's got good Cornell vocals too! Check out the different ways he's able to sing "Spoonman!" and you'll understand but a small fraction of his vocal majesty. Also featuring spoons, an underrated instrument.

The Day I Tried To Live: I don't recall this being a single, but apparently it's a notable track. Probably because it's got a slower, "Black Hole Sun" feeling to it that MTV-lovers can relate to, but it's better than "BHS" because of the chorus, in my opinion. It's got great vocals too.

Kickstand: This minute-long track is more of a punk song, but it's a nice breath of fresh air if you're tired of all the gloom by this point in the album.

...And that's about all the review I can do. If anyone's got the guts to do a track-by-track, then I want to see it. Honestly, there's no one-review-per-thread rule, put as many as you want in here! This album gets a 5/5; nobody can doubt it's essential quality. Thank you for reading.

Judging from your username, you are probably a Rancid fan (Matt Freeman is the bassist and only musically-talented member, in case you're wondering). Do you really find Cornell's voice so irritating as to take solace in the moaning and mumbling of Tim Armstrong? Pity.

I heard Soundgarden for the first time today. I was flicking through the musuci channels, and came across one really cool song. I waited until the end to see who the artist was, and the song name. I noticed Chris Cornell was in the video, so my guess was Soundgarden. I was right, and it was "Spoonman". It has a fantastic riff.

I had heard a really small clip of "Black Hole Sun" before, but I wasn't too keen on it to be honest. Also a long time ago, I thought Muse sucked. I was wrong there, and I was most definately wrong about Soundgarden.

Mailman- has a slow, heavy, AIC style beat. and with lyrics like "hello don't you know me? i'm the dirt beneath your feet", this song is one of the most depressing on the album. this is for those "i feel like ****" days.

Fourth of July- Kim tunes to CFCGBE for this song, so you can tell it's pretty low. yet another series of amazing Thayil riffs continues through this song to cornell's soulful swells. the interludes again showcase Thayil's ability to make simple meaningful riffs. overall, this is one of those songs that's gonna give you goosebumps

first time "reviewing" songs, so if it's ****, at least give constructive criticism

Great album but one thing about your review Matt Cameron is much more than a normal drummer. He is a drummers drummer because a lot of his stuff probably goes over the head of non-drummers. I'm not a drummer but my brother is and has opened my eyes to Matts talent. He is really ****ing good at time changes and always makes it groove likes its 4/4 even when they bands playing 10/8 or something. Even Black Hole Sun has several time changes (4/4, 6/4, 9/8 (the solo section there so mad props also to Kim Thayil) and bars of 2/4) not to mention is played at 52bpm. You're all probably going but thats bloody slow but it is quite tricky to play that slow and not have the whole thing fall apart especially with the time changes.

YDload
10-05-2004, 01:16 PM
Oh yeah, it always seems harder for me to keep time in slower songs because if you rest for even one second off the beat, then it's hard to find that pace again. I couldn't imagine being a drummer and playing 2 bpm (one beat every thirty seconds) accurately.

Good album to pick to review, this one. Limo Wreck, 4th Of July, Day I Tried To Live, Like Suicide are my favourite songs off this, but I think I like Badmotorfinger even more.

Incidentally, my all-time favourite Soundgarden songs compilation would be:

Gun
Beyond the Wheel
Rusty Cage
Jesus Christ Pose
Mind Riot
Room a Thousand Years Wide
Limo Wreck
4th Of July
Like Suicide
The Day I Tried To Live
Blow Up The Outside World
Never The Machine Forever
and Boot Camp + She Likes Surprises as extra tracks.

Anyone else out there got a better idea for a track listing than that one?

Well, you seem to be a bit younger than me, but I can tell you that everyone my age (18-21) knows who this band is.

Also, even though I reviewed this album a long time ago, I only picked up recently. Now I can probably do a more thorough review of the album, so keep an eye on this review to see if I decide to update it at all.

Within the genre, it's an essential own, but outside no it's not. There were albums being made at the same time as this "masterpiece" that recieved little to no attention, yet outdo this in many ways.

You can't fault an album just because it diverted attention away from other albums that you prefer. I would say that it transcends its genre due to the huge pop success it had. The beauty of Cornell's voice alone is enough to give considerable merit to this album, and the effect it had of bringing musicianship to the pseudo-genre of "grunge." You didn't have to be a good singer or a great guitar player to be a success at the time this album came out, but Soundgarden was full of talent anyway. They are exceptional enough to deserve their rating.

Cornell's voice is so masterful, unique, and full of emotion on this album, it is simply amazing. Thats one of the reasons i love this album so much, his voice goes over the top and it is something memorable. His range is amazing and something you wouldn't normally expect from a guy. His falsetto gives me goosebumps because it is just amazing. So in short, Cornell is a badass.

I would give this album a 5/5 because i think after 2 months of listening to it i would become bored, but i haven't. Highlights on this album for me are:

Limo Wreck
Black Whole Sun
4th of July
Spoonman
The day i tried to live
Like Suicide

Amazing album
