Taking Back Sunday have recently rised and risen above most emo bands out there, and have become one of the most successful bands in the emo scene this millenium. Their first album Tell All Your Friends introduced us to the band we love today. Where You Want To Be is their eagerly anticipated sophomore attempt.
Set Phasers To Stun - 7/10
An interesting opening track. It's quite mellow, and the lyrics are very TBS. Their new backing vocalist can't get it better than their last, and his singing in the second verse is pretty messed up. The music is pretty cool though, but this song is nowhere near what they can achieve.
Bonus Mosh Pt. II - 7/10
It doesn't really get better here. The music is a change for the 5 piece, with palm-muting most of the way through. But the lyrics aren't that interesting (Well it's love, it's love, it's love/Make it hurt) and in some ways cheesy, which lets down this musically good song.
A Decade Under The Influence - 8/10
The first single off the album, and a good one to pick. The lyrics are catchy (I've got a bad feelings about this...) and the music is pretty standard for TBS. The bridge is also quite catchy, getting slightly heavier than your usual song by this band.
This Photograph Is Proof (I Know You Know) - 7/10
Featured on the Spidey 2 soundtrack, you'd expect something great. It doesn't really fulfill that label, with not-so-original lyrics and music that is overplayed. But the chorus is quite catchy, and makes up for the poor verses.
The Union - 9/10
I love this song. It's experimental for this band, as it's so hastey and so fast, then slowing for a second in the chorus. This song is so addictive, and the lyrics go well with the fast music as well.
New American Classic - 8/10
Taking Back Sunday's acoustic attempt on this album is very moving, using string orchestra in the background. The lyrics are pretty deep as well (Just ask the question, come untie the knot/Retrace the steps as if we forgot). But I think it's placed in a weird position, after the fast song The Union.
I Am Fred Astaire - 6/10
One of the weaker songs on the album, but it's still listenable. This song leaves a lot in the open, and could be majorly improved both musically and lyrically. But it isn't a bad song, you can still listen to it and think "This is a good song." But it could've been better with TBS's standards.
One-Eighty By Summer - 8/10
Another great song on the album. The intro is really nice to listen to, and the lyrics match the music amazingly. Adam and Fred switch vocals so well in this song as well, which pretty much completes this song.
Number Five With A Bullet - 8/10
This isn't your average Taking Back Sunday, with very distorted guitars which sound chuggy. But the lyrics are again great. Not of the standards of Tell All Your Friends, but certainly great for the band. Definatly a favourite off the album
Little Devotional - 9/10
Very weird intro, leading into such a harmonic intro. The music in this song is perfect, and so peaceful. Adam's vocals match the mood again, and Fred's backing vocals sound so great. The lyrics aren't exactly groundbreaking, but it's the music and vocals in this song which make it amazing.
...Slowdance On The Inside - 9/10
Another superior song. It's very calm throughout, and the verses are amazing with the drumroll and guitars. The lyrics are pretty deep as well, and the song alomst reminds me of Brand New - Soco Amaretto Lime. Overall, it's a great finishing song for the album.
This, in no way, can match what Tell All Your Friends did, but it does a pretty good trying to. The songs are as catchy as ever, and the new line-up doesn't really change much, as you can hear on this record.
Overall rating: 4/5
Best songs:
- A Decade Under The Influence
- The Union
- ...Slowdance On The Inside

Downloaded album review  I'm sorry but I just don't like this. The people who actually wait for the album to be released and buy it deserve to get the top review in it. Anyway it was a good review. Only heard the new single. Most things i've read say it's not as instant as Tell All Your Friends and that you need to wait a while to get it. Will get this when it's released.

kif, your such a turd  stick with brand new :upset:mr I love Brand New.
Ste you can review it underneath, it doesn't exactly matter!
And no new Brand New material is coming out until next year, so for now, it's TBS
Nice review, but how can you say that A Decade Under The Influence is better than Little Devotional when you rated it lower?

Yes. A CD that has yet to be released can already be called a classic. Taking Back Sunday will be sucking dick for coke money in the Olive Garden bathroom in a few years.

i've only heard a decade under the influence and i know you know (spiderman 2 soundtrack..shameless plug for my review) and they were good. i'm trying so hard not to download cause i wanna support the band and buy the album but i was a little upset that your own disaster didn't make it to the album, they redid the song from the warped 2003 compilation and put it on the japanese version of the album but not the american...i guess i'll have to download that...but good review

Well that comeback bombed. Taking Back Sunday sucks plain and simple. Allow me a metaphor. There is a beach that only has big waves. It's called Major Label Beach. See there are only big waves because the public goes through fads all the times. Taking Back Sunday is the surfer on top of a very large wave called "pop-punk with occassional screaming" and eventually the wave will break completely and crash onto the shore, only to be followed by another wave. TBS will be gone soon.

i have to agree with that, even though i'm a big fan, yes...TBS will be gone from the mainstream soon but they'll be back in the "underground" and we will still be going to their shows, the only difference will be that the 12 year old girls who's parents stand in the back of the club won't be there. look at bands that exploded a few years ago like Lifehouse...they are still touring and putting out music and people still go to their shows, its just that major labels are like t.v....a metaphor if i will...once reality shows became a hit, every network was buying them up, that's just like major labels. suddenly, thrice, new found glory, brand new, taking back sunday, yellowcard, thursday, senses fail, midtown, the ataris, just to name a few all got on to major labels because that's what the labels were trying to sell on the radio and MTV, we still go to see the shows and will still go

Track List:
1. Set Phasers To The Sun
2. Bonus Mosh Pit Part 2
3. A Decade Under The Infulence
4. This Photograph Is Proof
5. The Union
6. New American Classic
7. I am Fred Astaire
8. One Eighty By Summer
9. Number 5 With A Bullet
10. Little Devotional
11. Slow Dance On The Inside
Background Info:
After Releasing Their First Album 'Tell All Your Friends' In 2002, Taking Back Sunday Lost John Nolan and Shaun Cooper, Fred Mascherino and Matt Rubano, Replaced Them.
The Review:
The musicianship on this album is nothing to special. The Guitar riffs are Incredibly repetitive, every song on the album sounds the same. If your looking for the taking back sunday you heard on Tell All Your Friends, you will be dissappointed.
I cant begin to pick any highlight tracks, they all sound the same, slow and repetitive, and the lyrics rarely make any sence. In 'A Decade Under The Influence' the lyrics "i've got a bad feeling about this" are repeated continously, well ive got a bad feeling about this album.
Positives:
A couple catchy tracks.
Negatives:
Where do i begin? ...This CD is lacking in so many areas. Where are the breathless, hopeless, yells from Lazzara? Where are the lyrics that were so brilliant always leave you wanting to listen again? When TBS lost John Nolan They lost the old taking back sunday, they lost the good taking back sunday. They lost the brilliant lyrics, and thats what made taking back sunday great.
The lyrics on this CD are terrible. I must stress again that the words are just repeated over and over and over again. The loss of John Nolan hurt this band so much. Leaving Lazzara on his own to write lyrics was a terrible idea, nothing makes sence. Even some of the song titles dont make sence. Theres a bonus mosh pit part 2, but there was never a part 1, and how can there even be a 'bonus mosh pit' ...someone please explain this to me.
This Album sounds Absolutly nothing like 'Tell All Your Friends'. 'Tell All Your Friends' left me wanting more, 'Where You Want To Be' left me wondering how i managed to sit through it with out my ears bleeding. If your an old taking back sunday fan i would not recomend this album to you, save yourself and savor 'Tell All Your Friends' Because 'Where You Want To Be' will make you question why you ever liked TBS, but then i guess you'll realize its because they used to be good.
Overall 'Where You Want To Be' is nothing you'll be impressed by, because there is nothing impressive about it. bad lyrics, bad musicianship, and even Lazzaras vocals arent up to par. I beg you not to waste your money on this. It breaks my heart to give taking back sunday this review, because ive always really liked them, but its just so... bad.

obviously, you've never written a song. the title doesn't have to make sense and the lyrics don't have to be in a neat package. let me guess, you complained how on AFI's sing the sorrow, the leaving song part 2 came before the leaving song part 1. maybe the title is a line from a movie or just a clever thought or even something that happened while on tour. plus its a better title then mosh pit which you are trying to reduce it to. Lazzara does have some breathless vocals. sure they're not the forefront of the album but listen under the guitars and Fred's yells and even Lazzara's main vocals and you can hear an addition Lazzara track playing. I have now listened to the album and enjoyed and i do not hear the sophomore slump that your review has. maybe if you provided some examples i could see your point but you just said "lyrics are bad, guitars bad, singing bad" and said whats good is "a few tracks"

I'm sure I could find this elsewhere, but I'm too lazy to...but why did John Nolan leave? His back up vocals fit Adam's perfectly, and he certainly looked cooler then the other guitarist. I haven't heard anything from this yet, but I have a feeling it won't be the same, as some of you have said, as the old stuff. I don't think you can top John's back up vocals.

justforgetme, did u not notice that some of the titles on "tell all your friends" made no sense? timberwolves at new jersey, the blue channel? the way they got these titles was by watching the tv listings channel (according to brand new). their song titles on the first cd didnt make sense, and tharwolf is right, song titles dont have to make sense. for all we know maybe theyre puttin out a bonus mosh part I on another cd, kinda like how coheed and cambria put out "in keeping secrets of silent earth 3" as their second cd.
that being said, everyone's right about how this cd doesnt compare to tell all your friends, but still its not a bad album. i do miss john nolan's vocals but it just makes me more eager for the better half of the old tbs, straylight run, to put out an album.

You do realize some of Brand New's titles make no sense wither. Sudden Death In Carolina? Me Vs. Maradona Vs. Elvis? Brand New did the same thing with most of their titles. Like Logan To Government Center, that was taken from the game Syphon Filter believe it or not. Tautou is a French actress.
In the end, it's only a title. It means near enough nothing compared to that actual song. I think that both bands cared more about the songs than the titles.

ok, so i understand im an idiot, so pay no attention to my review. i was just angry because the album wasnt what i expected, and i was hoping for something alot better. and i know that song titles dont have to make sence, and songs in general dont have to make sence, cuz im in a band and i write songs. i was just bitching and moaning for the sake of bitching and moaning. so disregard pretty much everything, but i still think the album sucks.

TBS bit off of Brand New pretty hard. I read that TBS just was sitting around in front of the tv channel surfing and they took the name of whatever obscure show they were watching and made it the song title. Think about it "Timberwolves at New Jersey."
*EDIT* I read what you were quoting cky2 and I realized that the guy was right about the TV thing so ignore that, but he's an idiot about Coheed and Cambria. You know how Star Wars: A New Hope was Episode IV but chronologically it came out first? Coheed and Cambria are doing a similar thing. Douche.
Me vs Maradona vs Elvis is an awesome song title :p
I know. It's about his insecurities about himself, like Maradona and Elvis were. Basically he's comparing himself emotionally to them 2.

i really dont understand why everyone has there panties all ruffled about this album. i've only heard two songs on purvolume (bonus mosh pt. II, and a decade under the influence) someone should let me know where i can find the other 9 songs. anyway, i enjoy bonus mosh pt. II very much, the intro/verse is very catchy and the acoustic bride is amazing. i dont think they've lost anything at all. and the verse in a decade under the influence "i've got a bad feeling about this" thats a good line, who cares if it gets repeated, Has anyone ever listened to Placebo? they repeat every chorus in every song atleast a dozen times, but it still sounds amazing, and they dont have replying verses from a second singer.
and coheed's second cd, In keeping secrets of silent earth part three is actually the third cd in there four part collection, and second stage turbine blade is the second cd. Does anyone know if the rumor about the graphic novel being released at the warped tour is true?

Yeah, the entire Coheed and Cambria albums are based off the comic books that Claudio is writing. The comic books were originally going to be released in April, but setbacks or deadlines or something pushed it back an they're releasing them at Warped.

okay, now here's my question...what version of a decade under the influence is gonna be on the album. because i liked the original version that was on krock and the warped tour compilation, but then the version on the video is different (more poppy and overproduced without really powerful vocals) and then the crappy video version was the version on the leak on www.mtv.com. i just like the original better because the guitars are harder and the vocals are more powerful and passionate. as for the rest of the album...it's good. the first few tracks are amazing...up to including new american classic. number five with a bullet (great High Fidelity reference although i already had a song called that so i guess i gotta change the title, maybe i'll call it TBS stole my song). but the last few tracks seem kinda...the same. i guess it's because i was listening while working on the computer...but the last few tracks seemed to blur together and there was no real standout part...i guess i gotta give it another listen

Well i've taken about 6 or 7 listens to this album on the leak and it's nothing like I thought. I loved it by the second time, didn't quite get into it the first time. Fred works fantasticly on the album. I went through the album looking at tabs before, the guitar work seems pretty similar throughout the album but it's not very noticble. Adams vocals are amazing throughout. The highs he reaches in places are great, the album is a touched overproduced. Songs like New American Classic could benefit with a bit more of a rough edge. ...Slowdance on the Inside is one of the best album closers i've come across. A very strong effort from TBS, will pick it up Tuesday when it's out.

Yeah TBS rock. In person their really cool too. Me and my band just got off the Warped tour with TBS and other cool bands. The name of my band is The Orphans. This was our 1st year in the tour and TBS really looked out for us. In fact Adam gave us a video shout out that is now up on our website check it out Orphans Site (http://www.subliminalorphans.com) . i can't wait until their album drops. It's gonna be hot.

Review
Set Phasers To Stun (3:03) - I'd say this intro is very strong. It comes out telling everyone they are finally back and ready to stir us with the more lyrics and maturity. I thought the song was a good showing also to what Fred brings to the table too. Nothing more to say but atleast it wasn't an introduction that was rapped by Fred. :naughty: 8/10
Bonus Mosh Part II. (3:06) - Since I heard this song on IMX live I've had a trebly feeling about this song. I even had the live version of it months before Where You Want to be came out. I think the bass intro really gets things going and the lyrics are fairly complete. During the end of the song I love the interlude in every way possible. The song is just so catchy to the ear and I know people don't like it but even with all the different things they added/changed to the one they performed on IMX I still think its one of the best songs on this album. 10/10
A Decade Under The Influence (4:07) - Uh oh, MTV single right here. Yea the video I must say is quite basic and plain but this song has grown on me alot. I really didn't like it that much at first because it seemed as if TBS should have not been singing this song but another band should of. It seemed out of style but its really grown on me and I'd say the chorus is one of the catchiest (word?) on the album. The lyrics kind of seem repetitive and I wasn't much of a big fan of Fred's screaming at the end but atleast he was showing something. I think Adam's voice on this song was one of his high points especially during the end. It's a single and you probably heard it and have your own opioion. 8/10
This Photograph Is Proof (I Know You Know) (4:11) - This seems to be just another song on the album. I can't really say anything bad about it except its kind of boring but the lyrics are stellar. I wasn't a fan of the chorus lyrics either though but I'd say this wasn't the best on the album. 7/10
The Union (2:50) - Possibly the best song on the album. It defintiely ranks top and I'd have to say this was the one song that seemed more experimental then most other Taking Back Sunday songs. The intro has the bass pumping and the lyrics are EXTREMELY catchy. Even I caught myself singing to the CD. I'd also say this is another song that shows extremely FANTASTIC vocals. In some places I felt it was as if Taking Back Sunday and Incubus formed one song. Shortest song on the album but definitely leaves you to wonder... 10/10
New American Classic (4:35) - This song definitely feels out of place. Not off the album but on the track listing. The Union is one of those up and down songs that gets your blood flowing now their going to slow it down with a slow acoustic song? Not a good idea and I think it hurts this song a ton. Also I don't hate when the fingers scratch the strings on an accoustic sound but seriously could you clean this up alittle. It seems like hes doing it on purpose time and time again. The lyrics are very heart filled though. 7.5/10
I Am Fred Astaire (3:44) - I love the title, this song is extremely catchy. It seems to be in the same place as 'This Photograph is proof'. Another strong performance by Adam but I couldn't believe how much Fred was sounding like John Nolan in this song. 7/10
One-Eighty By Summer (3:53) - Another great song. After the introducting guitars the lyrics hit you right across the face. I'd say this song will grow on me after a few listens. The lyric story could sum up a relationship thats going to fall apart because someone lost feelings for another. It seems as if the song is actually a dialogue in some ways to the story. The breakdown lyrics are ****ING AMAZING... 9/10
Number Five With A Bullet (3:49) - These two songs are really close to being perfect. You wouldn't believe how in some ways they seem as if they were laid out in the same way with a different story. My only complaint is its a little too repetive, I love the ending part, with the yelling in the background. Sounds like the TBS I remember from TAYF 9/10
Little Devotional (3:07) - Another high point is shown here by Adam Lazzara. The lyrics will take time to grow on me though but I really like the lay out of this song. 8/10 the chorus is good too but...
...Slowdance On The Inside (4:26) This is the best song on the album. I don't even need to say more from that. It may be the best Taking Back Sunday song hands DOWN EVER. Begining guitar pattern is same as Brand New's Soco Amaretto Lime except its with an electric instead of an acoustic. This song gives me goosebumps when I listen to it. Everything was perfect and every lyric is heartfilled to the point of capacity. The chorus is catchy and each verse is so carefully constructed. I love this song I don't know how I could put it. The way the guitar was laid out to the point of the lyrics was just beautiful. Even the bass with its lead parts were just fantastic. The ending of this song is just beautiful... 100000/10
Overall: 4/5
Pros: GREAT sound quality, same TBS heartfilled lyrics, different guitar and bass then TAYF...
Cons: Songs should be shuffled on the track listing. Some songs may take awhile to grow too or style may be too different.
UIAC's Wrap Up...
You know it really pisses me off that people had the nerve to bash this CD before it even came out. I myself found myself bashing the single but I regret it greatly. This CD isn't 'Tell All Your Friends' it may be even better. Its going to be rough around your ears but I will guarantee in a month you'll eat your words if you give it the chance. People are complaining about fred not being John Nolan but people have to seriously get a grip. Yes, fred isn't John but he's trying hard and adding his part of the pie. I doubt this CD would be any different whether John Nolan was part of the band or not. People who never heard TAYF are amazed by this CD and Taking Back Sunday is obviously making moves in different directions... for the worse and better.
EDIT: Also one important fact I missed out. I got this CD for $7.99 and it was worth every penny. If your too hXc to pay for a CD that costs less then lunch at McDonalds take a hike or something.

I don't have a cd rack, mine are shelved like books, so it works fine.
P.S. - Taking Back Sunday completely ripped Brand New's Soco Amaretto Lime. I think they are struggling to forget the little fued, whereas Brand New and Straylight have clearly gotten on with their careers
Yeh, but Straylight still suck badly. I saw them live with Brand New and the entire audience kept shouting 'Taking Back Sunday is where the money is' and words to that effect. Brand New and TBS are good however.

I saw Straylight Run with Rooney and some other band that started with an 'O' and their nice people but I don't think there going to be going anywhere. I can definitely see John Nolan regretting what he has done in the end.
I don't think John regrets it, even if it was just another high-school feud. Imagine the tension they would be going through if John was still with them now?
Besides, Straylight aren't that bad.

Will get this when it's released.

i just bought the album two days ago and its good. its not the real tbs like on tell all your friends, thats the only thing, its just not the same. maybe it was because of john and shaun leaving for straylight run that just didnt make it right. like many people have said, yes you have to let it grow on you. id give it a 4/5 not only because its tbs but because i am actually enjoying most of it, despite what people have to say.

Even some of the song titles dont make sence. Theres a bonus mosh pit part 2, but there was never a part 1, and how can there even be a 'bonus mosh pit' ...someone please explain this to me.
the song is called "Bonus Mosh Pt. II" because on the first cd, a line in "Timberwolves In New Jersey" says "i got the mic and you got the mosh pit" this song is supposedly a follow up..

I think all the lyrics are good once to really listen to them.Pity that some of them are just sayings (e.g. "cross my heart and hope to die").
Its not as good as john nolans lyrics but the musicianship is deifinately better.
Oh and by the way they do not use as many power chords as the old TBS.
Fred is a better guitarist but not a better singer!!!!!

I think this album is better musically and lyrically than Tell All Your Friends. That stupid "gun" theme is gone and the music's more varied. It's still not the best thing since sliced bread, as some people believe, but it's worth a 3 or a 3.5.

its an ok album, i must admit, tell all your friends was much much better, but this cd had some good point. I liked the acoustic song unlike many other people. It to me was one of the best on there. I still think that john shouldnt have left the band, his vocals are much better than the new guys(cant remember name). Straylight run is ok, but i seriously doubt that theyll be going anywhere real soon.
[COLOR=Cyan]i agree! it's not that i dont like the new cd but it's as if it's a new band and it really can't match up to 'tell all your friends'

Background Info:

It breaks my heart to give taking back sunday this review, because ive always really liked them, but its just so... bad.

- The Union
- ...Slowdance On The Inside
you seem to review tbs as if tryin to new is a bad thing I like how they play heavier and are mellow and i think it's awsome went they sayin different words at the same time. "But it could've been better with TBS's standards"
I don't think TBS needs standards I think they just need to be who they are

Argh some of the statements in this thread hurt to read. I picked it up finally at a reasonable price. It's not as good as TAYF I can say confidentely now however it's still a good album IMO. The only track I don't like is the moronicly titled 'I Am Fred Astiare'. There are still some really good songs. The Union, A Decade.., Set Phasers To Stun, Slowdance.. and One Eighty By Summer have all stood out. The vocals are improved from TAYF with Adams range pushing even futher than before. Freds a good replacement though I liked how Johns 'rough' voice contrasted with Adams more than Freds 'smooth' voice. About it from me 3.9/5

Leaving Lazzara on his own to write lyrics was a terrible idea
ummm sorry to post twice in a row but this made me kinda upset. All the members of tbs play guitar and write songs. It's not just one or two members

The lyrics were better on the first cd anyways....I think the mix between Lazzara and Nolan was perfect. Im mad it got ****ed up. But John's replacement is actually quite good.....though it ended with Breaking Pangaea breaking up...
