South Gate's not too far from Long Beach, but the Allen Theatre is terrible. North Hollywood's a little farther, but not too bad. Venue's pretty sketchy though. Lancaster is too far to think about. Go to Corona... its like an hour tops. Or South Gate.

Well, first of all, I don't recognize that attribution. I've never recognized "emo" as a genre of music. I always thought it was the most retarded term ever. I know there is this generic commonplace that every band that gets labeled with that term hates it. They feel scandalized by it. But honestly, I just thought that all the bands I played in were punk rock bands. The reason I think it's so stupid is that - what, like the Bad Brains weren't emotional? What - they were robots or something? It just doesn't make any sense to me.

But anyway, when I was young, I was always over the top because I was so ****ed up. Not "****ed up" as in "wasted" but more mentally "****ed up". And I was really jacked up. So it came out of that. I mean, before I was in Rites of Spring, I was in a band called Insurrection with Brendan, the Fugazi drummer who I've played with in every band I've been in.. And our music was like Motorhead and Discharge and Venom - **** like that. That was what the band sounded like. And we weren't very good! But nobody was calling THAT "emo." Then when we started Rites of Spring, I guess we got more serious about what we were trying to do. But I didn't actually sing in Insurrection. In Rites of Spring, I decided to sing and that's what came out. Because when I was young, I was nuts.

A friend of a friend was telling me how he saw Tragedy like three weeks ago in Long Beach. He said it was one of the sketchiest places he's ever been. He mentioned walking in through barbed wire fences, pit bulls sitting around in the club, and Tragedy rolling up in their van at 2AM.

It just doesn't flow...

The verse/chorus transition was a terrible idea. The vocals in the verse sound like nu-metal, which is disappointing because I had faith that the guy could pull it off. And I'm no stranger to cheese, I loved old A7X and I love The Showdown, as cb can testify.

EDIT: I'm listening to it again, and I'm not hating it as much. I might just have to adjust... we'll see. The guitar is still good, and the drums are WAY better than WTF. Not quite back to STST level, but better than WTF. That's the one thing I really like about this song. I guess I'll wait for the full album to pass final judgement. Their new fans still suck though.

But what made A7X great is that they mixed up punk, hardcore, metalcore, metal, and "power metal"/old school metal flawlessly. It was great. Now they're very one dimensional and the excitement is gone.
