Hey guys, I saw something cool in my Thursday newsletter...

Tickets for Strhessfest are cheaper if you buy them in advance and we don't want to leave any fans outside of the gates. The show features almost 30 bands including Finch, Converge, Recover, Beloved, Christiansen, Stretch Arm Strong, Murder by Death and of course Thursday.

That sounds nice. I'm looking for the full band list.

syrUsbilt

Tipshare is workplace communism. We have to throw in for mandatory tipshare to tip out the dishwasher, host and bartender (I wait tables) and its pretty crappy, I've lost up to 5 bucks on tipshare.

Silvermedalmafia
08-05-2004, 02:00 PM
Yeah, It isn't as bad at my place, because we don't wait on anybody, they come up to the counter. We have a tip jar by the main ordering place (we also do lunches) and a "College Fund Please Help" jar by the ice cream counter. At 3:00 (when 3 of the five people leave) we just split it five ways, and the two people left throw their money back into the tip jar and let it accumulate until when they leave.

Nah Cb, it's on the other side of the country.

Man, we get very very few fests here gc. We have Che Fest in San Diego, Sink With Cali Fest, and Facedown Fest, but that already happened. None of which have any big bands or anything.Sink With Cali and Che though have a lot of straight-up hardcore-y goodness. I miiiiiiiiight go to Sink With Cali but I'm not sure. Here's the info.

It took far too long for someone to post a thread like this, I totally agree that people throw around "hardcore" far too freely now,

Thankfully Im from Boston and we know our hardcore hahaha thanks to Mental.

Metalcore is becoming as mainstream as pop punk so I have confidence that in time the line between Hardcore/Metalcore will become more defined with breakout bands like Atreyu going mainstream and bringing their metalcore type stuff with them

cbmartinez
08-06-2004, 12:39 PM
That is true, but as long as the bands themselves continue to call themselves hardcore, your going to get more and more kids calling metalcore, hardcore.

LuncHBox71
08-06-2004, 01:08 PM
well done, kid. i myself have gotten more into a heavier sound than punk. there's only so much you can do with 3 or 4 power chords..

I don't like how people separate punk as just 3 or 4 power chords. Not all punk is The Ramones who interestingly enough used larger chords than power chords often. Strung Out is more complex than most metalcore bands. If you're calling Atreyu metalcore you can certainly eat your words on this one.

LuncHBox71

true. but punk in itself is usually just a pattern of power chords

true. but punk in itself is usually just a pattern of power chords

Punk in itself is worthless though. All music within itself are just derivation of similar chord progression etc. Making it interesting is the key. Expanding beyond that skeleton. You know?

alright. so I came here. I read somewhat through this thread (to ten) and I was wondering when I was actually going to eventually come to the finish.

I read oh two more pages thinking that maybe the end'll come soon.

I'm on page sixteen, and finally I decide you know what I'm about to read is either a) a flame b) a really short response to another post or c) unadulterererererered(okay so I don't know how to really spell it) band names.

alright. I'm all well and keen about learning about music I've never heard about or never really listened too, but my computer is about ready to crash with all the music I've pirated and stolen and placed on it using pirating and stealing a placing programs (which, by the way, will not be mentioned again in this post to avoid any controversey or me screaming about how clearchannel is a bunch of... uhm. so lets go on)

alright, so my computer is probably going to crash eventually with all this crap that I have on here, but I want someone to tell me (with as little bias as possible) some of the greatest bands in the genres covered in this forum (with the genres), as I mean, we all want to just learn something from this experience, and you haven't learned anything completely unless you can impart your knowledge to someone else. or some crap like that. in other words, blah blah blah, I'm lazy, blah blah blah I'm too american to read (the rest of this forum), blah blah blah I want it broken down in little tiny chunks for me to handle. I know this thread should probably have up and died recently, and potentially even the forumstarter has lost hope and given up on it, but people are still posting here, which means people must still be vaguely interested in the topic at hand.

so IM me, E-mail me, or just reply to this post, but it will be very much appreciated.

and if you live in the new york city area I may even give you a prize.

oh and *edit* I'm sorry that this has nothing to do with action movies or getting a ride to ozzfest. but. uh. I just felt compelled to write my post as if this thread still had something to do with music

There's a new DRACULACORE song up (http://www.musicianforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=207335&page=3) but there is something severely wrong with the upload so while you can sample the song (and the new contest) don't bother downloading it until like tomorrow at noon PST because you'll just have to redo it. This song is sort of like hardcore + gangsta rap + folk + grind + maniacal laughter. You'll get it when you listen.

can i ask a question at this point, how the hell are underoath metalcore, ive heard both old stuff and new. I hear no metal and the only hardocre seems to be the vocals, they seem more emo-core, or simply emo to me.

Well there are a few emocore-ish songs on The Changing of Times ("When the Sun Sleeps", a couple others) but most of it is metalcore ("A Message for Adrienne"). And then their stuff before that is just plain ***-ripping metal with a strong black metal undertone.

Avenged Sevenfold is hands down the WORST band I have ever heard...In my entire life. I'm not even joking, very few bands could match up to them on my hate scale. Except metallica...who they are ripping. They are like...

avenged sevenfold = emotallica

I don't find much similarity between Metallica and A7X. And it may be your opinion that they suck, just don't say they are not talented. Because they are all very talented individuals.

Their singer sounds JUST like James Hetfield...except when he "screams". Then he sounds like the sountrack to a documentary on animal abuse. I never said they weren't talented (physically) but as far as what they are..they are not talented creatively. They are emotallica.

cbmartinez

By the way, that Evergreen Terrace / The Red Chord / ALOL / Fear Before blah blah blah show the other night ruled. FBTMOF were great, but played mostly new songs. Damn the 90% of people that have heard them not liking them, they're good. Meshuggah... err, A Life Once Lost totally stole the show though. It was their first time playing this venue and they far exceeded my expectations. The mosh got insane for them too, which I totally wasn't expecting.

The Red Chord were second place in my book. Played some new stuff which was very good. I was in the front so I was the first one on stage for the massive breakdown at the end of "Dreaming In Dog Years" and had great mic action. Their set was surprisingly long. I was pretty beat by the time Evergreen Terrace came on, so I took it easy. That and that particular venue was about 100 degrees inside because they don't have an air conditioner. I was surprised that many kids stayed for them, I've seen them twice and both times the turnouts were less than large. Good show all in all.

However, there was suckage. I spent all my money by the time I came across the distro The Red Chord brought with them. Saetia, Kaospilot, Deadwater Drowning, Pig Destroyer, Backstabbers Inc., Casey Jones (From EVT, not the distro), Carcass, and a few others I held in my hand but did not have the money to buy :upset: *goes to Interpunk*

Well, Shane (the new guitarist) tabbed out the first minute or so on Powertab. The rest I found on some geocities website, but I have the link on another computer. I'll give you it next time I'm on it. It's still missing 3 or 4 parts, but I can play 95% of the song.Isn't shane from Evelynn?

Yes. So is one of the other guys. The drummer, I believe. And then the other Evelynn guitarist (I think) is in As I Lay Dying.

Rockin. Thanks man. Don't they played down 1.5 steps though. I don't like detuning. It's tedious.

I prefer detuning to 8 string guitars. God the band Meshuggah is so horrible.

Yeah, but it's so fun to play after you detune. I usually tune down and then play nothing but BTBAM and Dead to Fall for a couple hours. It's in C# Standard.

I consciously write metalcore in standard tuning to make it so I have to use my ability to make everything powerful and intense. I find it's more challenging and yields more interesting songs. Granted I may not be as good at my instrument as the guitarists in Between the Buried and Me, I think I can write some good songs.

I think it is best to write in standard tuning, unless you are in a funk of writing either nothing or very similar stuff.

Then you switch to weird tunings, like DADGDG.

I'm equally untalented and uncreative in every tuning, so it doesn't really matter for me.

I'm in the same boat you are. At least when I try to write hardcore songs. :upset:

I'm the same. when it comes to writing hardcore, the stuff i make is basically straight-up hardcore since i suck at being creative.
