Oh, about the Converge video:

Yeah, that's hillarious. It's actually the bassist that hits somebody in the head with his instrument though. Which I guess is technically a guitarist but still.

Buddy. I still like Underoath's new CD and I've listened to it 7 times through. The only song that has gotten old is "Reinventing Your Exit." I think the problem was you were raised on the older Underoath, so when they change it's not like listening to a whole new sound, it's like listening to a band that used to be great do different stuff. Also, I hate The Changing of Time. I really do.

BuddyBigsby
07-19-2004, 09:45 PM
I don't think that's it. I gave They're Only Chasing Safety another chance on a completely clean slate, old stuff aside, and I still didn't like it. "Young and Aspiring" is good, and "It's Dangerous Business Just Walking Out Your Front Door" isn't bad, but I still hate the rest. I just can't stand that sound period, it irritates me to death.

It's funny because those two are my favorite songs in that order. Maybe my tolerance level is higher than yours. "Impact of Reason" is cool too. I mean, they did some interesting stuff on the CD even if you don't like the sound. "Young and Aspiring" has a string section but way in the background so it's not as overt and annoying as in say every song they have it on Changing of Times. The choir breakdown owns. The favorite parts on the CD are where they're screaming over a catchy ryhtmic section. I hate how they often do the palm-muted thing with the melodic singing. That's weak in the first place and made even weaker by how trite it's become.

BuddyBigsby
07-19-2004, 10:36 PM
Yeah, that's why I like those two songs. They're innovative and bring something refreshing to the table. Especially that choir part.

Ya. And the rest of the CD doesn't do that as much. Some songs have hot action but in general the reason I like the rest of the CD is because there are well-written songs in there. I think there's a few stinkers but all in all even the songs that don't innovate are nice because they're fun and nice and all that.

that guitar tab isn't even fing funny... ****... But I'll add my two cents to the UnderOATH discussion... I find it to be a good cd. It's pleased me more so then a band like Atreyu's new work... I find people not to like the new underoath because Dallas left... Who gives a ****. It's a solid cd nonetheless...

Eh, there's one on the first page but I don't understand the genre very much either. I think basically it's a type of music that can be very chaotic and very soft. The soft parts tend to be very spacey and emotional and the guitarists tend to use a lot of crazy effects. That's as good a definition that I can give. Check out Glassjaw to see what I'm talking about.

Bands that use to play hardcore... Is one... Thursday is a band I describe as post... Saosin... Thrice... More singing, screamin choruses, breakdowns, more picking verses, mellow parts going into breakdowns, spoken word parts... Usually bands that use to play hardcore tend to "evolve" their sound into something like this.

Also, about Thrice being Christian, the song "To What End" kinda takes a stab at people who look at things like religion scientifically and try to come up with logical explanations for it. That suggests that maybe Dustin is Christian.

Dustin is Christian. I don't know if I said this or not, but a lot of his song titles and lyrics reference Christian literature, which I think is one reason why people mistake Thrice for a Christian band.

I just picked it up myself. Good stuff. I don't like the production though, it's too nice and clean for a hardcore album.

EDIT: I also bought Scars of Tomorrow's Design Your Fate. I don't even like them, I just got it because it was only $4.25.
everybody i heard from said the cd was a lot more raw then lowest of the low. as for being better then lowest of the low, i've heard mixed reviews. i guess i'll pick it up this weekend.

I see where you're coming from. There's a lot of double bass too, which comes from metal. I don't know, to me Throwdown are borderline. I consider them hardcore, but I don't freak if someone refers to them as metalcore.

Maybe you should consider the rereading process. To use an argument I've used many time before, when people call me "a whiny fag" because I listen to emo (real emo mind you like Hot Cross) when in reality my music has more balls than the crap they listen to, their own ignorance and idiocy instigates an uncomfortable and unpleasant situation for me. Why should I have to endure insults just because the other person is wrong/a bigot? I shouldn't. This thread was originally about educating people about certain genres so that they understand what they're dealing with instead of just running their mouth. It has slowly mutated into a community thread.

I haven't read all 28 pages (sheesh) so I don't know if this has already been said...

Where did the term "hardcore" come from?
When punk was declared dead (when the sex pistols broke up perhaps or was it when sid vicious o.d.'ed) back in the late 70s a lot of the original "punk" bands were "selling out" and becoming new wave bands. So any punk band that didn't become a new wave band was considered "hardcore". Back then these bands sounded nothing like what is considered hardcore today. So bands like Black Flag, Dead Kennedys, Circle Jerks, The Exploited, GBH, Minor Threat, UK Subs, SUBHUMANS, Discharge etc, etc etc were considered hardcore. The glory days of hardcore were in 1982. It wasn't until later that two "camps" emerged. The straight-edge/newyork hardcore style originated by minor threat and carried on by the likes of agnostic front and slapshot and the metalish style originated by discharge.

Hope this makes sense...

Yeah, the strange thing about me screaming is that I can't scream loud, which sounds like a oxymoron, but I just can't. To get a good low rumbling scream, I have to do it quietly. If I try to scream loud, it sounds horrible.

hahah. the best sing along line ever is Down to Nothing's "I hope its worth it"

Put that cancer stick in your mouth
INHALE and let that **** destroy your lungs
You pat for it, you look cool with it
And then you die with it

It makes you look so mature
Too bad it makes me want to walk away from you
That smell makes me sick
And I don’t want to choke
Not me, you
I want you to choke

STRAIGHT EDGE IN YOUR ****ING FACE!

Go ahead and X up, sellout.
Go ahead and X up, **** You.
Straight Edge for a while,
a crooked X for that crooked smile.
A new trend, a new start, t
he X on your hand will never be there in your heart.
