seriously, if you were in a band would you rather do all the work yourself, or just play, and have the label do everything else (pretty much)

Do everything myself. It's 10000x more rewarding to see a record you put out yourself get good reviews or some ****.

You people here have such a distorted view of hardcore.

Did I say it wasn't?

Look man, bands let labels put things out for them because the labels offer to help them out.. they split the costs and the profits 50/50 (at least that's what most labels do... Alone, for example).
Getting 'signed' is stupid, because 'signing' a band is about making money.
Get that into your thick ****ing skull.

Since you and the village idiot like these hypothetical questions, let's use one:

If you were in a hardcore band would you rather keep your depressing day job at the Olive Garden while practicing at night and have you band probably break up in 3 and a half months due to inadequate funding or get "signed" and be able to tour all over the US and produce a full length CD in a studio beyond an mbox and a G3?

Exactly. What's wrong with money? You're still DIY because you're making the music and putting in the time yourself but you're smart enough to focus on your music instead of trying to maintain some imaginary form of integrity.

I don't know about tornpictures, but i'm liking the signing idea.

Sure, let's give credit to the bands who do it themselves, doing every little bit themselves, but the ones who are signed are getting heard more than those bands that are at home pressing 100 albums every week.

Oh, so Hatebreed are DIY?

I don't think so man.Did we mention Hatebreed. No we didn't.

There's nothing wrong with making money. Money makes the world go round...oh yeah, and it keeps bands playing music; venues holding shows; and labels distributing. The things I just mentioned are priority. After that you have profit, you know, the stuff that buys your groceries; clothes; admission to shows.

You must be new to handling money so I'll give you a break.

Converge highlights:

- I went two nights in a row. Converge had almost entirely different sets each night, and between both they played: Most of Jane Doe and You Fail Me, including "Jane Doe" with Stephen Brodsky playing guitar, which was ****ing awesome/epic, and quite a few oldies: "The Saddest Day", "Conduit", "My Great Devastator", "Forsaken", and "Towing Jehovah".

- Ben's mustache. Holy ****, you could tow an RV with that thing.

- Finding out me and Nate have the same birthday was kind of cool

- JUGGERNAUGHT (twice)... and Halo of Flies and Ebola

- Ben getting up from his set during a pause in "The Saddest Day", doing a headwalk, then coming back onstage and finishing the song

- Aspirations. It's about damn time.

- Showing up just in time the first night to miss Scars of Tomorrow

- Stage dives

- High fives

- Listening to the 3 nu-metal guys next to me freak out during BTBAM and yell at Paul that he was their idol, after which they begged for a pick.

That picture is a joke one they have on their Myspace. It's Keith Buckley's (from ETID) beer. Dom (the bassist) thought it would be funny to take a pic of him holding it. Throwdown still bring the edge.

And it isn't that horrible if you smoke in front of throwdown. They played "raise your fist" here the other day and a bunch of mall metal kids were lighting up next to me.

Long Island Hardcore at it's finest.

They broke up recently, but the lead singer started a new band called This Is Hell. They sound very similar except This Is Hell has some breakdowns and SAHA doesn't.

The scene near me is a joke. Sure, the bands are good, but the people there are really starting to make me angry. First off, punk is supposed to be about originality right? Well, when I go to these shows, all I see is people wearing the same goddamn Hot Topic shirts, tight pants, studs, etc. I know this argument is a tough one and has been made before, but I'd just thought I'd say that's it become increasingly sad around my area. Also, lately I've seen an increase in 14 year old teenage sluts, who stand their giggling, making sure they are at least 10 feet away from the pit at all times. And lest they be rammed by a kid from the pit. The kid then receives a stare from about 7 girls, usually accompanied by whispering and giggling. This leads me to me next point. Punk is also supposed to be about individuality. I go to a show to escape the little popular kid cliques of school. But of course, what am I greeted by? Little girls, sporting mini skirts and Von Dutch. I hear some of them talking about someone who looks ugly, which really gets me angry. These kids come to the ****ing shows to escape, and they get made fun of? What the hell is that? The Trenton scene is becoming more of a joke with every band and new Hot Topic item.

That's my rant.

I've seen Dillinge twice, and I don't know what pits are like where you are from, but in Philly it was the most violent thing I have ever witnessed, maybe even including Slayer. At on show the pit started as soon as the guitars were being soundchecked, no lie. They had a strobe light going that followed the time signatures which was awesome, it probably would of hurt my head if it wasn't for all the shots i was taking, i got hit with a chain in my arm which wasn't cool at all. People were jumping off the second level into the pit like it was nothing. The other time I saw them two people started a fire in the middle of the pit. And I saw some kid holding like four of his teeth in his hand, and there was one kid that fell and snapped his ankle, I couldn't lokk at it because it was so nasty. Everyone around stopped and helped him out so they could get him to a hospital. Oh yea, I forgot to tell you, the first show I told you about was the last time I saw them, it was with the new singer but on 43% Burnt Dimtri came out and did the song and then they lit stuff on fire. so more or less Dillinger puts on the best show you will ever see and the pits are awesome.

Yea, I'm trying to get tickets as soon as possible. I think they're playing at the Troc, but I'm not 100% sure. I saw them there before, but the show at the Electric Factory was better. The show will still rule no matter where they're playing at though cause Dillinger owns.

My friend's band is play at the Trocadero for a battle of the bands. They're pretty bad though, Blind Deceptions is the name. They're battling some prog. band called Epistar who is supposedly really good. Blind Deceptions thinks they're hot **** cause they have five members. I told him (my friend, the singer) to tell the people in Philly that they were an edge band, and more people would like them.

Pointless. Why get your teeth knocked out at a show?

Most violent thing? Oh, I guess you never saw Black Flag back in the day.

I've been going to that site for a few months, but I think it had "youth of today" in the address name at some point. The tabs there are actually pretty crappy, but it gives you a base to then figure out the rest of the songs yourself. IE: the guy doesn't tab out any octaves (see the With Honor stuff).

I have no problem with kids at punk shows moshing because they are having fun. I have no problem with dancing at hardcore shows because they are having fun. It's all for the same thing: fun.

I don't get it.

Whenever I go to a hardcore show, the only people I see moshing are mall metal kids (nu-metallers), sXe tough guy kids (some of them are great guys, just weird), and metalcore kids.

Duh.

I've already bitched to Shane, but last night sucked. I've been having a lot of luck with shows lately, and I guess it was time to pay up for it last night. It was the much-bragged about Warriors / Casey Jones / Donnybrook / Until the End / Evergreen Terrace show.

I knew as soon as I got there it wasn't going to be a fun show. The venue was having one of its "Its-sold-out-but-we're-still-packing-people-in" nights, so the place was WAY overcrowded. I couldn't mosh because there were already 20 or so guys in a space that was maybe about 5 feet wide and 15 feet long. To make a long story short, I got punched full force by a dancer in the jaw, which led to a nasty gash on my upper lip. Then, I decided to tough it out and go to the front for the end of Casey Jones' set, but everyone apparently knew the lyrics and got onstage for the end of "If You're Smoking in Here...", which led to one guy jumping off and using my nose as a landing pad. I ran to the bathroom with blood all over my face and arms, and held my nose until the blood stopped. I was in a bit of pain, but I still wanted to see Until the End, so I decided to go out there and sit through Donnybrook. However, upon a final inspection of my nose, I realized I was moving my cartilage in my nose around. Not so good. I knew I had to go to the hospital, but my buddy was still in the crowd and I was his ride, so I had to go THROUGH the thick crowd, ACROSS the pit, during DONNYBROOK of all bands... and then run out of there like the pussy I am. Worst show ever.

Duh.Stop going to Throwdown shows then. I goto a Champion show and you know who I see? Genuine kids doing things to have fun. I don't see what the big deal is with watching a band? I can watch a music video of some band strumming and holding a mic, but I won't get the same feeling if I try to two step to some band in my room while watching a video. Nor will I be able to do mad stage dives and sing alongs.

I don't really mosh at all, but I have no problem with kids who do as long as they don't hit me. When I am very familiar with the band, I like to be up front for all the pileon and mic grabbing stuff. That is what makes a show fun in my eyes.

With Honor needs to come back to NYC because no one here knows who they are-- it makes it much more fun when there aren't a billion people by the stage when a band is playing.

EDIT: Do any of you guys listen to Zombie Apocalypse? They are playing next week at CBGB's with MPB, Anterrabae, The Backup Plan, etc. and I checked 'em out. I knew they were a Shai Hulud side project, but who's in the band? Also, the two songs I streamed by them are really really good. Anyone want to hook me up with their cd?
