I've really missed the old one so it's back!
My most recent PM purchases are probably:
Labyrinth - Labyrinth
Excellent album! Another quality Italian PM band. Some catchy songs here.
Kotipelto - Coldness
Much more adventurous then his first album. Some of the drumming irritates me though.
Stratovarius - Episode
Much better than Elements Pt2 which I thought was going to be the last Strat album I bought for a while.
Blind Guardian - A Night at the Opera
Urrgh sorry Frail when I first heard is I hated it. It sounded overproduced, cluttered and boring! I'm liking it more now though. Under the Ice is a great song. Maybe I'll like this album more after another couple of weeks.

Im not big on night at the opera either. Its good but the songs are very samey. Battle field and my precious jerusalum are great tho.
The greatest powermetal bands are Blind Guardian and Stratovarius IMO. Im listen to dragonforce at the moment and it rawks for just fun songs...nothing too serious but nice easy listening \m/
Recently heard thunderstones new album and it rawks...much better than their debut.

I aggree, when i first got "a night at the opera" i hated it lol, actually i hated it for a little over a year!! than after awhile, something just clicked. give it sometime, i have friends who had the same reaction to it that i did...took them awhile too and its all of our favourites. maybe its a st.louis thing ;) lol
"episode"- it is one hell of an album, my frist Strato album but far from my favourite. got me into them but once they got their "classic" line up solified it gave them room to grow off what episode started.
"Coldness"- i completly aggree, much more depth than "waiting for dawn", still preety predictable and it didnt break any new metal boundaries...but Timo's voice is supreme and it is by no mean a bad album!!
Labryinth- im just not into these guys, granted their lead guitarist is fantastic, the songs dont catch me.

Iced Earth are more thrash metal than anything, but have a few hints of power metal...yet they lack the lyrical content, classical leads, use of keyboards, and uplifting chorus.
Blind Guardian....here are a few good songs to try out:
Into the Strom
Curse of Feanor
Time Stands Still at the Iron Hills
Nightfall
Time What is Time
The Bards Songs (in the forest)
Somewhere Far Beyond
I'm alive
Welcome to Dying
Bright Eyes
Mordreds Song
Born in a Mourning Hall
Precrious Jerusalem
Wait for an Answer
Battlefield
Lord of the Rings
Traveler in Time

COB are pure genious!!! Wonderful live show, ive seen them twice (w/ Dimmu Borgir and w/ Iced Earth). Its a wonderful mix of raspy black metal vocals, thrashy guitar riffs, neo-classical leads, and power metal harmonies...one of metals finest bands out there.

FrailandBedazzled1979

Elvenking are good, but their singer holds the band back from being great. best song id say is "oakenshield" and their new album "Wyrd" or something like that ought to be worth a listen.
and I dont classify Symphony X as power metal, but they do have some songs that are power metalish, so they are worth talking about in here.

I have recently been obsessed with Angra - Rebirth. Those songs just get stuck in my head more than most bands. I heard that they are creating a new album. I like the new singer much better than Andre. He (Andre) is a musical genius, but I have a hard time dealing with the 'yodels' when he sings high. They are in key, but I guess it is kind of like Geddy Lee (you either like him or not). I still love the old stuff, though. I didn't hear that Symphony X was creating a new album yet, but if it is true, holy crap! I can't wait!

Dream Evil is the best there is around. Without saying it right out, they're making fun of heavy metal with songs like "The book of heavy metal" and "made of metal" and the whole dragonslayer disc. They can play with the best though. Yes, Frail, we all know you haven't caught on to them yet.
For those who haven't heard them yet here are some songs:

Evilized, from Evilized (http://mp3.centurymedia.com/DreamEvi-Evilized-Evilized.mp3)
And you can download the new Dream Evil radio edit of "The Book of Heavy Metal" here (http://www.dreamevil.se/Download/dream_evil__the_book_of_heavy_metal.mp3). I like power metal, though I don't have much. Manowar are just Manowar, Sonata Arctica (who I'm surprised haven't been mentioned) are one of my favourites, along with Blind Guardian.
Dragonforce are alright, I wouldn't have bought the album though (a friend burned a load of random tracks to a CD for me, so that's enough for me). And I was really disappointed with Stratovarius, didn't really like them at all (unfortunately did buy an album though).

Not sure if that can be called "pure" power metal, I guess its a nice blend of power metal and industrial, but still more biased towards metal.., Zapreshennaja Realnost' by Mavrick (Forbidden reality if to translate it) is really, really awesome. Or so I think! It has a bunch of really cool, speedy/hardish guitar and drum plays, which somewhat resemble sonata arctica and stratovarius, but general skill of guitar/vocals is way better in it, imo. Not sure if you can find it anywhere in western europe/usa, though, except for internet or some mail ordering, I only found it because of a good friend living in russia who sent it to me ;p

And again, here are Dream Evil, LIVE from 2002. Each is in DivX format but well worth it. They're hosted in Germany I believe so forgive slow download speeds from the States.
You'll be able to see Snowy Shaw on the drums. He's my favorite drummer from any of the bands I listen to. His ability to knock off the fills in different ways each and every time, and sometimes when you don't expect them, thrills me. The set used in this gig was CLEAR, could see right through the set.
Gus G also is quite a show on stage. The Prophecy really shows off his skills on the guitar. Peter Stalfors on bass has really long fingers. It's freaky, but that bald head is great.
And while leather pants aren't the most attractive thing, can't argue that the band doesn't look good while playing. The crowd unfortunately wasn't there to see them (they were the opening act) so they're not really into it.

It seems that the new bands in the power metal genre don't intrigue you at all, and that they have to be set in stone to be likeable, such as Blind Guardian, or Symphony X or Helloween. The bands which don't push the limits are not trying to be inventive. Dream Evil have stated that they're nothing special and nothing new. They just love playing metal. They do it well. Galloglass pushes the violin to limits in metal never before seen, even from Rhapsody (they'd use a synth one anyway hehe). Montany pushed a piano lead into its metal. In their own way, they've done their part to push the genre forward, even if by tiny amounts.
The smaller unknown bands often have a slightly better sound that's not so cookie-cutter that I personally enjoy much more. I don't need to like Iron Maiden, or Blind Guardian. but I love my reviver and galloglass and lost horizon. Metal magazines and online reviewers think "Legends" was a strong debut with its own uniquely wrapped sound.

Okay, but Frail didn't..what's the problem with him liking more traditional bands? A band doesn't need to be different from the norm to be good.

05-29-2004, 12:37 PM
It's often the argument about metal bands that they're not innovative enough, and therefore "mediocre". There are a plethora of bands that either follow tradition or just go with the flow of what the current sound is. It doesn't mean they are bad. Not every band has to change the sound of music to be good. Bands will put their own spin on the sound though. Galloglass uses the violin, and Montany the piano, to cite two examples. It's nothing "innovative", but it's also something a little different from the norm that makes them stand out. It's just been my experience that people who argue against new metal bands on the scene usually say "they're nothing special" implying that originality comes with innovation, rather than the smaller touches the band puts to the metal itself.
Frail's bands "don't stick with him", which to me translates to, "They're all the same and not original enough". Perhaps I'm taking it too literally, and I certainly have no intentions of flaming him or starting a kerfuffle. But personally, that line just bugs me a lot and rubs me the wrong way. Anyone can listen to what they please. Just bugs me I guess when i hear poeple saying that because the band isn't completely redefining the scene, it's automatically "mediocre".
FrailandBedazzled1979

honestly some people i belive take pride in listening to more underground bands regardless if they enjoy the music as much as traditional bands. I listen to plenty of lesser known power metal bands like Zandele, Heavenly, Theroin, Lost Horizon, Freedom Call, Human Fortress, Firewind, Pagen's Mind, etc..and when it comes down to who writes the best music its obvious to me that Stratovarious, Blind Guardian, Rhapsody, Helloween, etc...are what i like better. The songs are more memorable, uplifting, and timeless for me. I never listen to magazines, regardless if they are an online metal magazine written by metal purists or an article in hit parader written to make people buy an album. magazines are writen by people just like you and me who have their own opinions, ill read them but never let it effect if im going to buy an album or not. to many metal purists seem to push underground bands onto fans who arnt ready for them. i belive in sticking to what you like, i started off with the obvious power metal band and Iron Maiden and havent found anything to be nearly as enjoyable as them. granted i would put Lost Horizon and Freedom Call up there with my favourites now. Simple as that, some bands focus to much big over the top production but forget a hook in their songs and when its over it leaves you with a blank look at the band, which ultimatly is what i think is important. fans in a more undergound metal scene like power metal are more open to try new bands than alot of other genres and look who they still listen to the most, the originals.

its not that i think they are mediocre, people can be great musicians and weak song writers....which is the case with alot of bands.

I just picked up finntroll, but there is not folk metal thread, and folk metal is close enough to power.
finntroll-noises of the swamp, brutal black metal voclas, finnish lyrics, polka dance songs, uses kazzo, digery doos, accordians and every other crazy folk/polka instrument out there.
highly recommended
as well as bal-sagoth: most impressive use of symphonic keyboard playing, the vocalist has the best hold on the english language, the lyrics are stories not songs, deep triumpent vocals all the way to high raspy screams, insane drumming.
unfornutaly much of bal-sagoth you will find is bad quality.

Bal-Sagoth are a great band!!! ive never listened to them enough to really follow the lyrics, but i enjoyed their playing very much. Finntroll my only complaint if the finish lyrics, but the folk sound with metal goes very well...i first heard them when an Elvenking fan recomended them to me about a year ago, not the kind of band id listen toften but now and than i can be in the mood for it. ive still been meaning to pick up a bal-sagoth album, any recomendations of which one for starters? i forget what songs my friend had downloaded or id tell you.

I listen to Heavenly, Lost Horizon, Freedom Call and Pagan's Mind as well... but your second sentence confuses me. "best music" = "what I like better" is basically what you said which is where I disagree.
Bands like Lost Horizon and Iron Maiden are indeed huge when it comes to image and production. It doesn't make them any better, though, than Therion or Primal Fear. All of power metal shares the shredding and arpeggios in the guitars, and the double bass rolls, and the uplifting vocals and choruses. I agree, some do it better than others. But it doesn't mean that what doesn't click for you, won't click for me. I fell in love with the Choruses of Galloglass, the way the vocals are layered, and the violins. I also fell in love with Patrick von Maurik's personal touch on the vocals in Montany and Reviver, even though most find him annoying. The simplicity of the Wizard discs grabs my attention immediately.
It doens't have to be drastically complex or complicated in signatures to be 'good' in the power metal scene. The song formulas in Freedom Call are just as simple as Wizard's when you tear them down. Gamma Ray is just as simple. Iron Maiden are written exactly the same. What makes them likable is their personal touches. And what makes Iron Maiden so special to you drives me nuts. I couldn't tell you what it is, but it just "doesn't stick with me". Doens't sound like much of a defense though, does it? ON the other hand, Wizard sticks with me very much. Why? No clue.
Bottom line is that we all love music, and we don't know why. :) I've listened to all of the bands you mentioned except for Firewind, but now I shall since I had never heard of them before. If it doesn't stick, so be it. Doesn't mean it's not good.

good call, good discussion :) power metal is power metal and when you find something that you really enjoy in the genre, thats where the magic happens....for some of us one band over another, all in all...were all power metal fiends :)

Ralf Scheepers will always sound Power Metal to me. It's more heavy metal, but with a voice like his, it just doesn't seem right to lump him in anything other than Power Metal. I love his voice too.
Oh and I downloaded FireWind's video from their site, and it's pretty cool. i'll have to snag a few more mp3's before I decide if I'm attracted to them or not. I'm not sure yet.

Galloglass
You can listen to 30s samples of the entire disc here (http://www.limb-music.de/cgi-bin/limb.cgi?page=artists_galloglass&s=5&cd=1). Their label Limb Records (http://www.limb-music.de) had the entire song of The Dragon's Revenge but they pulled it. A Winter Tale is good as well as Ancient Times. The quest will be called a Blind Guardian ripoff, but it's not. It's far better.
Speaking of Limb Music, head to their website (http://www.limb-music.de/cgi-bin/limb.cgi) if you like Power Metal. they sign nothing but power and progressive metal and offer songs for download on their new releases as well as have information up to date regarding releases by already signed bands. This is where I discovered Montany and Galloglass and even Wizard. Rhapsody's on their label as well.

Because close-minded people look at some of the better known bands of the genre, see people who look "gay", hear high voices ("gay") and happy music, and dismiss it as..well, gay.

All the popular metal from the early days had higher voices as well. Ozzy, led zeppelin, quiet riot, motley crue etc. It's that there isn't any angst attached to it in power metal and the teenage crowd tends to dismiss happy music as gay...when homosexuality and music have nothing to do with each other 99% of the time.

Anyone not familiar with Helloween? Kai Hansen of Gamma Ray fame wrote most of the songs and was the inspriation for dozens of power metal bands to follow afterwards. The Walls of Jericho changed metal forever.
There have been 2 major tribute albums to the Helloween era featuring Kai. The Keepers of Jericho (my next album purchase I believe) I and II use today's metal acts performing the hits of yesteryear. If you'd like a sample, jet on over to my website through this link (http://www.theexitwound.com/?page=10) and download Guardians, from the Walls of Jericho, performed by Rhapsody, Italy's most bombastic and over the top metal act.

About time!! It's included on the CD as well. Snowy Shaw is incredible (drummer).
The new disc is incredibly different from Dragonslayer, but close to what Evilized sounds like. It's almost all in 4/4 and very much like something AC/DC would have done if they were any good. The Book of Heavy Metal, the track, is unlike most on the disc. It's definitely the slowest and heaviest on the new disc. I'll be doing a CD Review for this site later on today.
Snowy writes most of the music on the album as well. He plays and writes the guitar parts as well. The DVD is really sweet when you see him on the guitar only to be followed by his own matching drum parts. I think it sounds good becuase he can do this and there is no conflict of interest in the instruments and how the players use them.

Rata Blanca is by far the greatest band from Latin America (they're from Argentina) I've ever heard. Their guitarist, Walter Giardino is simply GOD. Viva Rata Blanca.
I despise Mago de Oz though...*
OK.....Rata Blanca Rulzz.....but why do you have to hate Mago De Oz.....they are great.....and the songwriting is the best....but i prefer Saratoga than Mago De Oz.....thats like Judas Priest(Painkiller)thats a great band i recomend to all of you....oh they are from spain....

I hate Mago de Oz mainly because the singer's voice annoys me, every song has the same crappy violin intro and the songs themselves don't seem to convey a melodic line pretty well. The guitarist just does standard recycled rock crap. Sorry but I just don't like them.

Hehe. It's so true!! He is the Iron Savior.
Heavenly is okay, but slightly too soft. While the music is hard, the overall sound is extremely soft compared to gamma ray and galloglass and montany. There's a certain sound I enjoy, and Heavenly misses it only slightly. They fall where Freedom Call falls for me, just outside my realm of enjoying it fully. I cannot find exactly what I dislike, but something bugs me.
Kai is king. He invented music and keeps reinventing it with each release or guest appearance he does. He's in the studio fooling around with new Gamma Ray material. Can't wait!!

Anyways, has anyone hear heard of a band called Magic Kingdom? I picked up their latest CD ‘Metallic Tragedy’ and it’s awesome. Symphonic Power/Speed Metal at it’s best. The title track is amazing. It’s a 13 minute mini-opera (literally; it has a plot, characters, dialogue, etc) with each character represented by a different kind of metal singer. There’s the Nightwish-esq female soprano, the death metal growler, the black metal shrieker, the bands normal vocalist and I think there’s another guy in there too. The voices all work together to form an incredible atmosphere. The whole kicks more *** than words can describe.

Avantasia are actually quite good. And yes, gathering 10 + guest vocalists per album would be quite difficult, i think, but it does make the band. Let's discuss singers, after all, singing is one of the defining characteristics of Power Metal. My favorite would be Fabio Leone from Rhapsody, his control of the vibrato is amazing, very operatic; I also like Kotipelto's voice and he has an amazing range.
FrailandBedazzled1979
07-14-2004, 02:22 PM
Kotipelto i find to be the most intresting and enjoyable singer in power metal, personal preferance i know, but his style and way of holding a note really hits home to me. Fabio i love to death, Luca'a vocalist on his solo albums can not compare to Fabio's voice, very inspiring when he sings with such confidence.
Heres a few more to mention: Chris Bay (freedom call) Mathius Blad (falconer) and Daniel Heiman (lost horizon).
PS: lets weigh the pros and cons with Helloween's vocalists: Michael Kiske and Andreas Deris.

Hehe, well, because you did, I'll try to help you out here. :p
I only have 5 of their albums, Heavy Metal Breakdown, Witch Hunter... The Reaper, Excalibur and Rheingold.
Their history is split into two: their first three 80's efforts and 7 that came out after a few years off.
Out of the ones i have heard... The First two sound very 80-ish, like rage and running wild at the same time. So pretty much good german speed metal. The later 3 i feel they developed a sound of their own: very heavy and very biting. Chris Boltendahl's voice developed in their time off, and it has the most magnificent rasp to it. I love his vocals on the last three. The song writing and production also went up a few notches too. On the first two, they sounded quite dirivative and the songs lacked a bit of diversity.
I really cannot choose a favourite, but, the safest bet would probably be to go with The Reaper first, as it is kind of middle ground. Excalibur is really intense, while Rheingold is just straight up heavy. So yeah, get those three first i guess. :D
Lmao, i love them all. If you like Rage and Running Wild, you will like Grave Digger. Although, they are heavier than RW, and a little heavier than Rage at times.
Note To Self: Must get more GDer albums.

EDIT: Oh, some people don't like the vocals; kind of a love them or hate them type of senario, like king diamond (although sounding nothing like KD). But i love them.

Is Heavy Metal Breakdown rare? And I need to get into some Running Wild. I heard that they have this pirate metal thing going on.

I saw a bit of gravedigger at the store yesterday but unforuntaly I have 10c in my bankaccount. :upset:
Oh well when I get paid on Thursday I'll probably buy about five CD's.
So far I have:
Rhapsody - The Dark Secret DVD CD
Ayreon - The Human Equation (is that what it's called?) CD DVD package
Gravedigger (maybe?!)
Maybe some Dream Evil or Galloglass if I can find it.
Suggestions?

I finally listened to Helloween, Blind Guardian and Iced Earth. I'm definitely gonna get flamed for this, but I didn't like them at all. I dare not say they suck because I respect bands and I don't have a band of my own to call better, but their music was boring.

Blind Guardian will probably grow on you.
I'm not a huge Strat fan although they have some awesome songs.
I only have one Helloween album. I like it but I'm not in a huge rush to buy more.

That's a shame. Did you download Helloween - Halloween OR Helloween - DR. Stein? Those would have to be amoung the most fun songs in the world. :D

Buy Nightfall in Middle-earth first. Then buy A Night at the Opera.

A Night at the Opera isn't good for begginers. Go with 'Somewhere Far Beyond' instead.

i dunno I might like A Night at the Opera, I listen to Children of Bodom, and whatever dragonforce, stratovarius, Helloween I can find on Rhapsody. Thanks for the suggestions. Just hope I can find them in a local store(not likely now that im in Mississippi :( )

Yea, get 'Somewhere Far Beyond then'. Somewhere Far Beyond is more thrashy, while A Night at the Opera sounds less like a metal album and more like an Opera with drums.

For First Blind Guardian CD you should get Imaginations From The Other Side. It showcases BG at their most outstanding and unadulted.

i like A night at the opera best, but my first into to BG was nightfall in middle earth which i think is the best cd to start off with when getting into power metal.
When I was in France I picked up some power metal cd's because I found a shop that sold them quite cheap.
I got:
Iced Earth - Dark Saga
Dragonforce - Sonic Firestorm
Bal-Sagoth - Atlantis Ascendant(I think thats the name of it)
Nightwish - Once
Dream Evil - The Book of Heavy Metal
I'm quite pleased with all of them seeing as I'd only heard around 4songs by each band and I was going off recomendations(sp?) from this thread so I want to say thanks for recomending me these great bands :thumb:

how is the Dream Evil band, i have never heard of them... and i hope you enjoy Dragonforce, thats a good CD. Fury of the storm is one of the craziest solo's i have heard...
All of Dragonforces solos are some of the craziest I've heard, they are really good.
Dream Evil are alright, I've only heard 'The Book of Heavy Metal' once through some crappy mini speakers so when I can be arsed, I'll listen to it again.
They sound pretty good though.

^^
Yes, upon the first listen of dragonforce, i almost had an orgasm (the title track on Valley of the ****ed was pretty **** insane), but on the second listen... well, they don't do anything for me now.Their songs aren't catchy at all, they all follow the same format, a lot of riffs are very samey. Just a very bland band when you get down to it.
And to Frail about avantasia. Yes, i meant that avantasia would be harder work than edguy. :D... I've been having a power metal evening, listening to Helloween, Gamma Ray, Hammerfall, Avantasia, Iron Savior and Vigin Steele. And I think the reason I like Avantasia is because of all the guest musicians, especially David Defeis (how ever you spell it) The Final Sacrifice on II is pretty much a virgin steel song, and i love it. I think it was that song that turned my opinion around, and it then made me realise that most (yes, not all :p) of that album is free of fluff. :D

well said JMetallica, Avantasia is like the supergroup of power metal haha. and i do agree that The Seven Angels is not only Tobias' masterpeice but one of power metals most unique anthems to date. :)

Iced Earth are more thrash metal than anything, but have a few hints of power metal...yet they lack the lyrical content, classical leads, use of keyboards, and uplifting chorus.
Blind Guardian....here are a few good songs to try out:
Into the Strom
Curse of Feanor
Time Stands Still at the Iron Hills
Nightfall
Time What is Time
The Bards Songs (in the forest)
Somewhere Far Beyond
I'm alive
Welcome to Dying
Bright Eyes
Mordreds Song
Born in a Mourning Hall
Precrious Jerusalem
Wait for an Answer
Battlefield
Lord of the Rings
Traveler in Time
you got there before me
another good Blind Guardian song is Excalibur
