Yeh.

I've kinda lost touch with Sabbath recently, they're still my fave. band of all time but at the moment I'm really into Drum n Bass, Power Metal and other Hard Rock like Deep Purple.

I've scored dibs on a Sabbath FA which is going to take me ages to write...

Edit: to shadow.

shadow_stalker
08-16-2005, 02:28 PM
Glad to hear that andy, better that you do the FA rather than someone that only has vague interest and knowledge of the band, you doing ozzy+ years all at once, or gonna try and break it up abit?

i was actually listening to solitude today, **** i forgot how well ozzy actually sang when he tries

I might turn it into a little series, do each 'era' as a seperate thread.

Solitude is a beautiful song.

Edit: Sabotage is quite an underrated album, but I'm going to stop discussing Sabbath in the PM thread now :p

shadow_stalker

We also need a second guitarist, but there apparently are none, problem with power metal is that with alot of bands like sonata and 'force it's hard to get tabs

"I'd give it all for a heart
if I was a King I would give away my kingdom
Treasures and crowns wouldn't mean a thing
If I only had a heart, if I only had a heart"

i love that chorus

what hxxp tip?

YSI tracks down the links and blocks the uploads. In order to avoid this, you type the link you're given but instead of "http" you type "hxxp" so that it's plain text (not hyperlink) and it's not tracked by YSI.

For example: hxxp://s60.yousendit.com/d.php?id=1RT5898QERB44UVP7DLAVH9W8, you just copy paste it to the address bar and replace the "x" with "t" is your browser doesnt do it automatically

The songs by cryonic temple aren't bad, thanks shadow_stalker :)

By the way Stoic, what's 80's power metal like? I've heard stuff by helloween, and I tried to listen for similarities in the music, but since I'm relatively new to power metal, I really don't know

Well, in my opinion, during the 80s there weren't pure power metal bands, but there were those who played a kind of proto power that influenced the first generation of power metal with Helloween being the first and the most representative. I'm referring to melodic/heavy/speed or NWOBHM bands in the vein of Jag Panzer, Omen, Manilla Road, Angel Witch, Running Wild, Dio and especially Iron Maiden.

Kronos
08-17-2005, 09:59 AM
I like Dio and Running Wild a lot  Never got into Maiden as much as my mates; I only really like Piece Of Mind and Powerslave. When I was younger I was into Priest, and now I like Scandi Power Metal best, so I kinda missed Maiden out.
I think Dio really deserves the title of father of Power Metal - his lyrics were in that Dungeons and Dragon style years before it was popular, and in Rainbow we had the beginnings of the heavy use of keyboards as well. I always thought Maiden were more the fathers of speed metal - there are virtually no keyboards in their music, they have a twin guitar attack (a rarity in Power metal I believe) their lyrics are often historical rather than mystical.
For me it's definitely Dio, first with Rainbow, then his two album stint with Sabbath and then his first two solo albums; the ingredients are all there.

I've recently gone on a Nightwish binge (more so than usual) after watching the End Of Innocence DVD.

Crap, it was powerful. Basically a 2 hour runthrough of Tuomas, Jukka, and that fat guy who did male vocals on Oceanborn (forgot his name) talking about the band's history, punctuated by moments of them on tour (half of the time, the band was drunk off their asses). It really gives insight into how much Nightwish means to Tuomas, and how much energy he put into the band. Well worth the 20 bucks I paid.

Also got Iron Maiden - Rock In Rio (DVD) which I'm gonna watch today.

So, since all these threads are being renamed, I suggest we ask this one to be called the "War Council Of Power Metal Arcanum". Thoughts?

That way we can revive our rather silly and no doubt nerdy titles.

We'll have to make up some new ones for the new regs, though. :p

Iced Earth - Something Wicked This Way Comes and/or Horror Show, any others
Demons & Wizards - Either of their 2 albums
Edguy - Hellfire Club
Stratovarius - Visions
Dragonforce - The Valley of the ****ed
Angra - Rebirth
Helloween - Keeper of the Seven Keys, Pts. 1 and 2

The great thing about Nightwish is that they sound pretty much exactly the same as they do on record. It's phenomanal.

However, I'm gonna have to disagree with you on their music sounds easy...it's NOT. It's unbelievably complex and difficult to play...if you want Nightwish at their most technical, get Oceanborn. Or, like Rumboy said, get Wishmaster, as it is one of their greatest albums.

Or, for non-Nightwish material, try Sonata Arctica's Winterheart's Guild or Ecliptica.

It's not just that particular album/track - I only used it as an example. His drumming has groove and complements the songs. People who just equate speed or technicality with greatness are in danger of losing the point of music, which is .....music.
Example Yngwe Malmsteen. Technically probably unsurpassed. Musically sucks balls. IMHO.
Likewise drummers, I don't care how technical stuff is, or how many bpm someone does double bass - I like music, and Nightwish make great music. Period

Oy, woke up about an hour ago...show last night was brilliant, but i came home barely able to move.

Symphony X wasn't great...they weren't even good.

They were ****ING STELLAR.

We missed DEP just so we could get front row for Symphony X...the band comes on, their lead singer (bad with names) did his bit, and they launched straight into Inferno. It was like a freaking bomb went off...everybody watching the band just started screaming and headbanging. They did 4 more songs (didn't know the whole setlist, but I know they played Sea Of Lies and Wicked), and they closed with possibly one of their best songs, Of Sins And Shadows.

As soon as we got to the concert, we hung out in the parking lot for half an hour or so, cause the tickets said the show didn't completely start until 6. We went in, and it turns out we missed 2 acts. Bobaflex (who I could care less about), and NEVERMORE! WE! MISSED! FREAKING! NEVERMORE! I was unbelievably pissed about that.

Symphony X more than made up for that though...I would've gone just for them. Their setlist was superb, and they really know how to work the audience. One of the best performances I've ever seen.

this power metal intrigues me...great guitar riffs and solos? good lyrics? good drumming? DragonForce, Iced Earth, Children of Bodom? could someone recommend some pretty good songs from...DragonForce and another band you think defines this Power Metal genre? id like to hear some...any screaming in the music? i can live with it.

Symphony X recommendations too? i hear really great things.

Uploads for the Tarot album would be much appreciated indeed.

Symphony X recommendations: Inferno (Unleash The Fire), Of Sins And Shadows, Sea Of Lies, Church Of The Machine are pretty good starting points.

Dragonforce: Fury Of The Storm, My Spirit Will Go On, Soldiers Of The Wasteland

Helloween: I'm Alive, Mr. Torture, I Want Out, Eagle Fly Free

Blind Guardian: Battlefield

Anything by Nightwish

Those are some pretty good jumping off points.

Hi again fellow powermetallers. The link for Gemm is
http://www.gemm.com
They had 15 copies of Stigmata from various sellers across The States yesterday when I bought my copy. Just use the search function to seek out those tricky to find abums..
I will be more than happy to help out by uploading the album when I get it - but it will probably be a week or two.
I also got The Silent Force by Within Temptation thru my letterbox today and initial impressions are most favourable.. :)

I downloaded Far from the Maddening crowd by Wuthering Heights last week and it is becomming one of my favorite albums a bit too fast. The Longing for the woods trilogy is great.

Not to big a fan of Withing Temptation, being Dutch I was bombared to death with them a couple of years ago. And I didn't like the first 2 singles of the new album. The Mother earth album was pretty good though.

I can understand being bombarded with a band would put you off! We in England have not been treated to anything other than Boy Bands and f***ing ColdPlay for ages, so we would think your situation was a treat!
I don't think W.T will be one of my all-time faves but what I've heard so far is pretty good, and quite "listenable"

PS What were the 2 singles from the album?

First they released Stand my ground, which I didn't like. It felt to made, not like the mother earth album, it realy missed the fantasy/dreamy touch I liked. Then they released Momories (I think I missed this one completly) and then Angels, thats a song that bassicly is built around her singing if I'm not mistaken and I didn't like that one either.

Think of the press the latest Coldplay release got and then put Within temptation in that. We had nothing but them on tv from weeks before the release of the album untill weeks after. It realy got kinde on my nerves.

Good of you to get that album. I don't own it yet, but I've listened to it a couple of times. Just costs to much where I can find it. "Black Dragon" is a killer track on that album. Luca's great, but I think he falls a bit short of Rhapsody.

Apparently, it's some kind of inside joke. They never clarified what it means.

But even today they still have the jokester attitude going. Tobias wrote in his bio on the band's webpage, "A long, long, long, well a very long time ago (but not so very super long) my tranquil home village was hit by a terrifying storm. Trees were cut down, cars were blown through the air, and all of the sudden the whole village was without electricity. No TV, no Playstation, no carousels, no nothing...no light and terrible boredom.......nine months later little Tobi saw the light of the world."

He's currently working on an autobiography for the band entitled, "They Are Rockstars but Who Cares?"
