Ok I couldnt find anywhere to put this so it's going here for now (until it gets moved).
Everyone has their own opinions and I understand that....but to discount a band because they are made up of members of other bands? That is seriously pathetic. I am stating this because there is a thread on this forum that got closed about the band Dark New Day. The thread started out about how much people loved their sound and message, then quicklt fell off the edge into something along the lines of 'well I hate them now because I found out they were all in other bands before this one'.
How is that signifigant in the least? Regardless of who they are, where they came from, etc- they are amazing musicians. It shouldnt matter if you were in a previous band....my god even the members of the 'almighty Tool' were in bands before that one, and have started other bands AFTER Tool got huge....bands that you wouldnt even know of or wouldnt exist if it hadnt been for their prior success.
'I loved them but I found out they were in bands before (aka 'supergroup') so now their sound and my opinion has changed dramatically'
Jesus people stop being so anti-label or whatever it is you want to call it.....great music is great music, and almost every band out there has members in it who played/play in other bands.....anyone out there a Foo Fighters fan too? Well maybe not if you adopt this outlook....

here's your answer :p
Quick! Someone cast a Level 10 ''don't ask silly questions'' spell!
:)
Sorry to interrupt all this roleplaying, but power metal is becoming a favourite of mine, and I'd like to ask the experts what decent power metal bands I'm missing out on, as I feel like expanding my CD collection some more.
My current PM collection consists of:
Angra
Avantasia
Blind Guardian
Dragonforce
Dragonland
Dream Evil
Edguy
Gamma Ray
Hammerfall
Helloween
Iced Earth (power metal?)
Kamelot
Lost Horizon
Manowar
Rhapsody
Running Wild
Sonata Arctica
Stratovarius
Therion
If it seems like too much to ask, it doesn't matter. I would post this in the recommendations thread but this thread would yield better results.
Shattered_Future

Niiiiiiightwish!
Nightwish is not true power metal...however, they do the job nicely.
Starter albums: for more symphonic, Once. Otherwise, Wishmaster.
Also, Finntroll has power metal elements to them...
Stoic
07-23-2005, 05:07 PM
You've already checked out a great amount of bands (I havent :p) so you have a strong background.
I would STRONGLY suggest:
Sabaton (see upload on page 68)
Slough Feg (see upload on page 68 and even more on page 60)
Elvenking (see upload on page 67)
Tad Morose
Persuader
Wuthering Heights (see Steerpike's thread in the index)
:thumb:
Ah, I actually have Nightwish's back catalogue, I just didn't list them as I wasn't sure if they were regarded as power metal.
A mistake on my behalf, my apologies, thanks for the suggestion though, I appreciate it.
I recommend...
Ensiferum
Wintersun
Human Fortress
Dungeon
Galloglass

Power metal is an outgrowth of Speed Metal. The lyrics are usually what define the genre, since they focus on war, mythology, heavy metal, bravery, honour, and death. Basically, it's Heavy Metal for D&D folks. Great genre, though.

I never liked The Misfits much...don't know why.
One of my best new songs I've heard is either Victoria's Secret by Sonata Arctica or Taking Back My Soul by Arch Enemy. The former because of its beautiful nature and great leads, the latter because of its great leads and unrelenting assault manner.
EDIT: Amen to the second part of that. Keys are great, but it's WAY too hard to find a decent keyboard player who can actually DO all that.
My band has a keyboard player...he's decent, but not up to the level of most power metal songs. I don't think ANY of my band is. :upset:

It's one of my favourite "just recently heard" songs along woth helloween-halloween

You must know I'm pretty picky by now Leah :p
It's not bad, I can listen to it, but it's not my idea of vocals at all. My favorite singer is Bruce Dickinson, I'm all about the power. Tarja has no power in her voice. It is quite melodic yes but I think for the powerful music Nightwish has they could have a more powerful singer.
I was on the verge of going off on one when I read this, but I won't. Let me put it like this; you're wrong. You can not like her voice - it's your opinion, but to say that her voice isn't powerful is not gonna hold up. I think Nightwish is perfect as it is; the very thought of Bruce Dickinson fronting the band fills me with horror.

People compare them because they're the two biggest progressive metal acts, most likely. They don't sound identical, but I would still say they have compareable sounds.

the only thing comparable imo is the instruments they use, because they both have the same type of instruments: singing vocals, guitar, bass, keyboards, and drums.
Everything else is a matter of opinion, and symphony is more progressive power metal and more metal than DT, while DT is more progressive rock/metal, and moreso on the rock side. Both are great bands though, it's just a matter of opinion on how you compare them.

Most power metal bands do for me.It always takes a few listens to really enjoy. It is definately my favorite genre for that sole reason, because once I fully soak everything in, and let the music grow on me, it's pure nirvana.Like Falconer, when I first heard The Coronation I couldn't like it because of his overly pompous voice. But after about five listens, I couldn't stop listening to it BECAUSE of his voice.Ahh the majestic wonder that is power metal.

I can upload Elvenking's latest cd Wyrd later on tonight. It will take awhile as I have terrible internet but I'll start it up in a few hours and go do something else.
Oh my thankyou. If there is anything you want in return, just ask. :)

I've got the chorus of Bloody Masquerade at least.
There's nothing proud in this bloody masquerade
We're not warriors from Hell who died for dominion
Pestilence burns like a demon blade
As the hearts of evil tear apart
The lands of mortal man
Black steed rides across battlefields

I've got bits and pieces of the verses, but there's still so much to figure out. Part of it is Jioti's German accent throws you off.

haha this song's awesome, I feel like singing along with the chorus whenever I hear it. Well, I decided to take a shot at this, and I'm missing two parts. I'm hoping those might have been the parts that someone else might havefigured out, so I'll post what I have anyway.
Don't let your hearts be against us,
Cause if you have pity on us
Before
God will have mercy unto you
Forgiven all upon you do,
Your guiding hand through coming days in war.
If you call us brothers,
You are not have to disdain even though we were killed
Chorus
Watch them shed too many tears,
When you find you're spending the
!%$#^*#@%??
But they lay between bodies burned,
Battered, shattered and broken,
Over corpses once had spoken
Freezing ice cold full moon
*** hand and holy fist
Distant hills shrouded in sheaths of mist
It's nothing more than a bloody masquerade....
I'm pretty sure about most of it. Some of it might not make too much sense, but then again it doesn't sound like english is Jioti's first language. I might be completely off though, and corrections are muchly appreciated.

chorus
there's nothing proud on this bloody masquerade
we were not riders from hell
who died for dominion
pestilence burns like a deamon blade
as the horns of freedom tear apart the rites of mortal man
black seed rise across battlefield
the first bit sounds like "lives like this blood company"
and the second word sounds like "hunts" I think that's what it is anyway
and it should be battered, "slaughtered" and broken not "shattered" I think
Hells Bells
08-10-2005, 09:12 AM
ooh no, I didn't put the chorus because steerpike already figured it out.
By the way...for that one line I got:
As the hearts of fealty depart,
The ranks of mortal man

Alex finally! Do you have AIM or MSN?
Steerpike
08-11-2005, 12:36 PM
Because metal bands very rarely come through either Pittsburgh or Baltimore.
Anyway, yes, I have IM's, but I hate using them. The last time I brought up AIM, it locked my computer up for 15 minutes as it tried to shove a bunch of pop-ups past all my security software.

Any time I bring up an IM, it slows my computer down dramatically. During this time, it can't even perform the simplest tasks without problems coming up. Just switching to a different window becomes the technological equivalent of an 80-year-old man trying to take a dump after eating nothing but pizza for a week.

heh, this is the only song I've listened by them thank to an upload (Lord Brum I think) in the power FG. Judging from this song alone I think it's an album I would buy. A few bands play this style of power (=old school helloween esque power/speed) nowadays.

You're welcome :) I expected Helloween to be more popular among the power metallers of this forum but it seems they're always overlooked for some reason. Sure I'm not the greatest fan but at least Walls of Jericho, the two Keepers and the Dark Ride are not to be missed.

Hello Mr! You know real band members are like heroes to me! I remember a while back you came here in Greece supporting megadeth, how was the experience?!

To be honest, it was sorta depressing!
Athens was so awesome but we were there for such a short period of time we never got to see anything! From our hotel room we could see heaps of places we wanted to go but because of our stupidly tight schedule we pretty much flew in, caught the shuttle bus to the venue, played the show, went back to the hotel to sleep for 2 hours before flying out to Germany the next day!
That whole part of the tour was like that - we did Serbia and Romania before then and we didn't even have a hotel room for those dates, we slept at the airport! So you can imagine how tired we were by the time we got to Greece...
Having said all of that, we had an awesome time on stage and everyone we met was really cool. Hopefully we'll get a chance to stay a little longer next time we're in the country. :)
