I dont' have any Blind Guardian readily available, sorry. :(

But I DO have 3 new tracks from Wizard's new album Magic Circle available on my website (http://www.theexitwound.com)! It's VERY different from Odin, but it carries the Wizard sound very well. I don't like the sound of the snare drum, and some of the melodies are questionable. Doesn't seem to be as fast or powerful as Head of the Deceiver or Odin. But overall, the album is incredibly good.

If so I must hear it...

Close but no cigar haha. Actually, they covered the "Uriah Heep" song with the same name from their 1972 Demons and Wizards album, which is just as cool as the Sabbath song :)

Tales from the Twilight World is closer to Somewhere Far beyond. Very good album, this is where Blind Guardian actually started turning into a power band. Hansi's vocals are rawer and he mostly uses his lower ones (hadnt started lessons yet). There are certainly mainy highlights in this album including: Welcome To Dying, Lord Of The Rings, The Last Candle and my favourite Lost In The Twilight Hall where we have a Hansi Kursch - Kai Hansen dwelling.

Imaginations from the Other Side is closer to Nightfall in Middle Earth. Alright, not THAT close but this is where Blind Guardian gained a more modern symphonic/melodic perspective but yet it's thrashy although with less folk elements. The production quite "muddy", Somewhere Far Beyond's exact opposite and Hansi mostly uses his "barky", despairate vocals. This album was the most difficult for me to get and it's the "darkest" in Blind Guardian's Discography. My favourite songs are Imaginations from the Other Side ,Alive, Mordred's Song, Bright Eyes, Another Holy War.

GET THEM BOTH!

Yes! I didn't want to say in in case I offended anyone, but yeah. The guitar stuff is awesome, but the lyrics are sooo cheesy. The only song I really like is Secrets. I love the solo part; when the keyboards are going and all of a sudden everything goes quiet, and then that guitar squeal comes on. That's awesome. :thumb:

However, many power metal bands don't have ultra-downtuned riffs and screaming vocals...

If you want, try Nile, Six Feet Under or Cryptopsy. All death metal bands...those should fit the bill for what you are looking for.

EDIT: Got an interesting question I'm pondering...are power metal bands better with or without keyboardists?

I don't mind keyboards, but I only like them when they are subtle, I don't usually like too many keyboards in a song and I rather there be more guitar riffs but if they are used less often then that's alright.

I used to have a huge problem with the standard double-pedal beats in many Power Metal bands, as well as the vocals. I've gotten over both now, though some vocals and drumming still p*sses me off. Sonata Arctica being one of the vocals I still can't stand

Manowar

Keyboards in almost all cases. They add atmosphere, and are often what gives power metal the sound I love. Especially in the case of Rhapsody. As far as I'm concerned, Rhapsody may not be wortn listening to if they didn't have Alex Staropoli doing his amazing keyboard work.

Cain
07-13-2005, 11:30 AM
Personally, I LOVE keyboards in metal. Especially with the deep "pad" synth sounds, you can add so much color and darkness to a song's chord progression and music.

Arucard
07-13-2005, 11:32 AM
I got Demons and Wizards : Touched By The Crimson king, and it rocks hard. The Immigrant Song cover is awesome.

And Cain : I love keys, especially in bands like Vintersorg and Borknagar, where the keys are just simple root chords, they add so much atmosphere.

Cain
07-13-2005, 11:36 AM
They really do. It works both ways, too: the guitars are playing some badass riff, or are chugging on the low strings, and the keyboards move through the chord progressions with fancy extended shapes. Very emotional and atmospheric. I use synths as much as I can in my heavy songs without getting overbearing.

I've finally decoded your rant, and here's my rebuttal.

Well i'm happy for you that you like those bands, and because just about everything you say if it has your opinion in it there's a problem.

I think you're being a little too defensive. Are you honestly that afraid of people disagreeing with you?

I could say Metalica, not sure if there's one or two Ls, is power metal and someone would come back with a negative response so i'm just not going to.

Well, duh there'd be a negative response. Metallica is not, nor have they ever been power metal. So naturally is you named them as a power metal band, fans of the genre would be displeased.

Power metal is defined by bombast and melodrama. It requires a high degree of musicianship because of the various songwriting styles it can encompass. The melody section is always prominent and tight, and the rhythm section is driving and loud, often with a lot of double-bass drumming. Vocalists tend ot have classical and threatrical training to develop belting tones and vibrato.

Within power metal, there are a lot of different bands and styles. Blind Guardian and Savatage are radically different, for example. And Gamma Ray is worlds apart from Wuthering Heights.

Also, today I just found out Luca Turilla has his own band other than Rhapsody. I listened to the album of his I saw, and it was great, just my money was being spent on something else (Hatebreeder).

I haven't heard much of Luca's band, so what could anybody tell me?? Does he compare to Rhapsody??

Yeah I was wondering the same thing. From what I've read on metal-archives, Rhapsody is better, but hey you never know.

I listened just fine to the rules I didn't post stuff against it. What I got kicked out for is supposedly starting flairs/arguments. I didn't start any arguments everyone else did to everything I said. It's not worth being in these forums anyways, If you can get kicked out for asking what a good band name is then that's just stupid. I really don't see what the big deal is about it. If you can answer that then do so please cause I would really like to know why that starts so many arguments.

You'll never get a serious answer to a thread like that. You're better off asking people whose opinions you know can trust. The only reason I occassionally ask for opinions of my writing and things like that in the community thread is because I've been here so long and am on friendly terms with the regulars. Several of them, I respect and value their opinions. You're a newbie. You need more time to build up a proper reputation.

Furthermore, this is the internet. People are going to be jokesters, opinionated, elitist, rude, stuck-up, or any combination there-of, just like real life. Either learn to deal with that, or leave the internet entirely.

Sorry, but I can't be any more blunt with you, because that's the short and long of it. If you're not mature enough to handle the idea that not everyone around here is as saintly Mother Teresa, you're too naive to be using the internet.

Stick around if you think you can deal with the occassional argument. This place is a great resource for exposing yourself to new music. But if you can't cope, leave and save yourself the headache.

Anyway, your ban should be lifted soon. It was probably only 24 hours and 3 days tops. The mods are getting very strict around here lately because of how many people have been getting out of control this summer. They need to tighten things up to restore order.

Thanks Steerpike for interoducing us to yet antother great band :thumb:

Of the stuff I've heard, I really think Far Beyond the Madding Crowd is their best album to date. Try to track down the Longing for the Woods trilogy off that album. Pure quality.

Their earlier albums are more proggy, but FBTMC is where the power/folk elements really stand out.

It's water under the bridge now, but you have to remember not to be so defensive. You have to be ready to admit you're wrong when proven so and realize that there are going to be arguments here.

Few people will debate that Avenged Sevenfold's new album made a distinct shift toward power metal, but you really need to pay attention to the others here to fully understand the genre. Trust me, it really pays to listen around here and not act defensive when someone contradicts a statement you made.

I listened to bit off that album just now. I wasn't particularly impressed, but it does bear a resemblence to Tarot. Sort of.

The vocal harmonies sounded a little tinny and the guitar riffs were a little muddy, while most power metal bands have much cleaner production. Overall, I'd say your safest bets would be:

A Night at the Opera - Blind Guardian
Suffer Our Pleasures - Tarot
Under Jolly Roger - Running Wild
Once - Nightwish
Hellfire Club - Edguy
Hall of the Mountain King - Savatage

Hammerfall is hit or miss with me, although I only have one of their albums. They can be quite catchy.

I can understand where Strombland's (sp?) influences come from when it comes to his guitar work, especially his solos. He's actually a decent drummer.

As for Power metal I definately need more essential albums.

Well, just finished listening to some Sabaton and Jag Panzer. I think I prefer the former.

Sabaton has a strong Iced Earth/Manowar sort of feel. Stuff you can really headbang to.

Jag Panzer is talented, but I think their guitarist needs to ease up a little. I lose interest in the solos after a while because it's just one big sixteenth note melody most of the time.

Bruce is Toby's main influence. I think it's great that Edguy aren't afraid to wear their influences on their sleeves.

They're pushing the 25th year anniversary now. Rolf is showing no signs of slowing down, either.

I noticed that I do tend to bankrupt people when I show them new music. Lucas is now determined to get Ozric Tentacles' whole discography. All 25 albums.

Yeah, their stuff is hard to get but fanboys (ME) always have their way. They used to have songs available for download in their site but not anymore :(. You're missing an incredible band Mr Steerpike, in a fair world they would be supporting bands like dio and maiden.
