I heard a few songs. They were, meh, alright. I found them pretty boring though, but I guess I'll have to give it a better listen.
Oh, I got Jag Panzer - Thane to the Throne a few days ago, pretty good so far. I don't think I listened to all of it yet.
Just because I liked it doesn't mean you have to, if you think it was boring, then you still succeeded in giving me your opinion.

So, being that I already have Something Wicked and Horror Show, should my next Iced Earth purchase be Dark Saga or Glorious Burden? I've heard good things about both, and I'll probably have both at some time, but what should be first?

You haven't heard much power metal then. Northerr are good, (one of my all time favs in power metal) but there are better bands such as Blind Guardian and Guardians of Time.

Angra- Rebirth
Rhapsody- Symphony of Enchanted Lands
Hammerfall- Crimson Thunder
Lost Horizon- A Flame to the Ground Beneath
Manowar- Kings of Metal
Nightwish- Once
That should do it.

Nobody cares, but I still say they're power-death, which is what I refer to Kalmah, Norther, CoB, and other bands to that nature collectively as.
Why? Because it's power metal music with harsh vocals, and ignorant people call that Death because of the vocals soley, it's like Lamb Of God being called Death, so why not make a compramise and say it hase elements of both genres?

try iron maiden (yes they are power metal, listen to the lyrics if you dont agree with me)
No, they were one of the bands that inspired the genre. Blue Oyster Cult and Black Sabbath use occult themes in their music, but they aren't power metal.
Iron Maiden's main contribution to the formation of power metal was the use of harmonized leads and belting, theatrical vocals (the latter of which was also a contribution of Dio).
Basically, saying Iron Maiden are power metal is like saying Black Sabbath is doom metal.

Yes, it's a terrible album. The only worthy Helloween is their first 3 albums, and yes, they are very worthy
so the fact that all the lyrics etc are power metal lyrics doesnt matter......?
they are definitely no longer the heavy metal band they were in the 80's, with the New Wave Of British Heavy Metal.
anyway, to be honest i'm not bothered what genre any metal really is as long as i like it.

Children of Bodom have harsh vocals and lyrics about Lake Bodom, life's struggles, death, and hatred, most of which are also laced with excessive profanity. Does that make them less power metal?
Lyrics are not the only thing that determines a band's genre.
Iron Maiden have evolved their sound over the years, true. Any decent band knows when its time to grow. But although they are technically NWOBHM, I still consider them classic metal in the vein of Judas Priest and Rainbow.
And for the most part, the extensive genres only exist for nerds like me who have no life outside of our music/books/movies/etc.

Kings of Metal is one of their finest along with Triumph of Steel.

For Rhapsody, I'd go with Symphony of Enchanted Lands or Dawn of Victory first. The former is the first album that ever got me to bang my head to violins. The latter is where they started to sharpen their sound with a heavier direction.

Anyway if you haven't heard of them this is a brief post I made about them in another thread,
"Masterplan was formed by ex-Helloween members Roland Grapow and Uli Kusch shortly after they were booted from of Helloween after the The Dark Ride album. They have a couple of albums, the latest being released at the end of this month.[January] I haven't heard anything from the new album, but the their first release--which is self titled--is top-notch. They have an amazing vocalist and if that weren't good enough, Michael Kiske does the vocals to one track as well."
I have ordered their second cd through amazon but it is yet to come, both albums are strictly import only.

Well Masterplan are certainly nowhere near Dragonforce or Blind Guardian in terms of originality and in that respect their sound is very retro. I wouldn't really label them as unoriginal though, they just play a very quintesstial form of power metal--without many of the bells and whistles that many modern power metal bands now include (like orchestra's). At worst one can fairly say that they play a generic brand of pm, but even so, they do it very well. And the vocalist is definitely a highlight.

I got sent some Dragonforce music over MSN today, and it didn't really sound much like I suspected, as it kind of sounds like a pop song to me, only obviously with crazy drums/guitar parts going on in the background. I quite liked it, even though it got a bit repetitive, but basically, is this typical either of their sound, or of the genre as a whole? I'm a complete n00b to power metal, so apologies if I'm asking something really stupid here, but I'm just really curious about it.
No, it doesnt represent the genre very well. I love DragonForce, but they are definatly the happiest PM band about, and they pull off what they do very well. Check out some Iced Earth or Stratavarious if your a PM noob.

Yea, thats not a Blind Guardian song.
Recommendations for power metal n00bs:
Blind Guardian
Mirror Mirror
Into the Storm
Time What is Time
Battlefield
Traveler in Time
Stratovarius
Black Diamond
Speed of Light
Father Time
Will the Sun Rise?
Hunting High and Low
Helloween (the originators of the genre)
Eagle Fly Free
I Want Out
I'm Alive
Revelations
Power
Rhapsody
Emerald Sword
Wisdom of the Kings
Power of the Dragonflame
Unholy Warcry
Warriors of Ice
That should be enough to get you started.
Any who, I brought Stratovarius - Episode (bringing the total number of Strato CD's I have to 2!) today so I'm a happy panda. I also got Queensrÿche's s/t, but I don't know they're considered power metal. They certainly have their PM moments.

A Nu-metalish solo. A screamo solo.
Nu-Metal solos used to exist, now the bands just use normal solos, but shorten them way too much.
One example of a real nu-metal solo would be at the end of Earache My Eye by Korn.

I'm personally of the opinion that "Nightfall in Middle-Earth is overrated somewhat, probably due to the subject matter. I'd rank it behind "A Night At The Opera", "Imaginations From The Other Side", and "Live" at least, and maybe "Battalions of Fear". You should pick up "Live" if you're wanting to get into Blind Guardian. As the name implies it's a live album, and it has a nice mix of songs. And, at least in my opinion, several of the live songs are superior to their original versions.

Anywho, the BG albums really grew on me too. When I first got NIME I liked it, but I thought most of the songs sounded bland and bored me, now it's my favorite album. so guys, I've almost finished the Silmarillion (god, hundreds of names!) of but I dont quite understand to what incidents refer some of the songs off the Nightfall in Middle Earth. Do you know where I could find them?
I think this is helpful.

I gave up reading the Silmarillion after the first few chapters, got to salute you for that endurance. :p

Actually, I think the vocalist is a guy. At least that's what my friend says.
Well, according to Metal-Archives, the vocals for The Hall of the Olden Dreams was done by Elisa Martin. And I'm positive that's a female. Half the members left Dark Moor and so there's new line up now. The current vocalist is a guy though.

EXACTLY what I was looking for! God (who?!) bless you!
EDIT:

Tolkien builts a whole new world of his own starting literally from zero. So, his descriptions are full of details which are quite difficult to remember and/or follow at times (I have serious trouble with the names and have to go back all the time!). Some people are not willing to put so much effort reading it and/or they dont like his style. It's a totally subjective matter. Personally, I really like the book and I'm sure things will be much clearer on a second read.

Well, the first part on the world creation was very dry and incredibly hard to digest. I figured it might get better as the pages progress, but I didn't hold out. I can't remember where I'd stopped and I can't check since I don't own a copy. I'm sure though that getting to the interesting parts would take a mighty bit of determination and endurance for some people. My only saving grace is that I'd finished LOTR before I picked up the Silmarillion, so I'm not totally ignorant of Tolkien's awesomeness. As a reader I can't say I'm a big fan of his writing style, but I do admire the beauty of Middle-Earth and infact highly respect Tolkien for creating a rich and inspiring world which influenced and helped popularise the fantasy genre that I love!
Okay slightly long-winded and poseurish but well nevermind...

Yes they are.
But they don't show a good example of a Power Metal band

I basically just looked them up on metal-archives . It says heavy/power metal. I haven't heard any of their music yet.

Personally I think they improved with each album. I suggest working backwards through their discography.
But if you like more straightforward (boring) neo-clasical shred type stuff then get Divine Wings of Tragedy first.

Eh, I understood it just fine with just 1 read... but that's after reading LOTR, The Hobbit, and Unfinished Tales, it's basically just that Tolkien's writing style was much too extravagant and drawn out, but he still kicks ***

I'd start with The Divine Wings of Tragedy first, or V: The New Mythological Suite as those two are my favorite Symphony X albums.

Has anyone else here heard Yngwie's album 'Attack!!'? I got it a few days ago, and holy **** it kicks ***. People who think of Yngwie as nothing but repetitive scalar runs and poorly written hair metal need to buy this album. 'Ship of Fools' , 'Valhalla' and 'Iron Clad' are some of the best power metal songs I've heard in a while. And yes, they are power metal, Valhalla sounds like Rhapsody minus the symphonics.
Also, Yngwie sings! He does all the backing vocals and sings lead on a song called 'Freedom Isn't Free', which is a cool song with a hard-rock vibe to it.
Also, Baroque & Roll is the greatest song title ever. It's a cool song too, if you ignore the fact that it sounds like an attempt to re-write 'Far Beyond the Sun'. Actually, no, even if you don't ignore that it's still a really good song.
So, yea, anyone else like this album? Or Yngwie in general?

I saw a live video of Baroque & Roll, awesome shi.t. The only Malmsteen album I know is Rising Force, and I don't listen to it often.

are you guys familiar with The Lord Weird Slough Feg? They're not exactly power (they play a mix of folk, traditional, doom and power according to metal-archives) but I believe they would be really huge in a fair world.

Anyone know if DragonForce is coming to the US anytime soon?
Is anyone from the UK going to the Thirteenth Day festival in July?
Its looking like a great day so far, with Sonata Arctica headlining.

Mostly Iced Earth, Nightwish (best...band...EVER...), Sonata Arctica, Forgotten Tales (another great band) and Children Of Bodom (i dont wanna start a fight of what they are, i consider them power metal).

Np: Dragonforce's Demo (as DragonHeart).
This is pretty good, especially "Revelations", it's almost better than the album version. The only problem is ZP can hardly hit some of the high notes, and the backing vocals are terrible. Other than that, it's good though.
Anyone know if DragonForce is coming to the US anytime soon?
Sadly, I don't think they have the fanbase to tour North America yet. :upset:
