Meh...Sonata.
I'm relistening to Rhapsody's Symphony of Enchanted Lands for the second time right now. Better then I remembered it to be. It's actually pretty cool. Except for the fact that the title track is 7 minutes instead of 13...

The reluctance of most power metal bands to tour England properly is frustrating... I mean...are Manowar coming here for example?
No, about 20 dates in Germany and about 5 in the ****ing Czech Republic for ****'s sake!
They need to keep their European tour cred going.
"Hey, I heard you guys were playing in London?!"
"What, London? Nooo, you must mean Lublin, in Poland. Yeah... big power metal community there. Like 200 fans of the music, at least."
Lord Abortion

London sucks anyway. It has a measurement, cpsi
I'll leave you to work it out.
(hint, first word has four letters)
Seriously though, PM bands have this big problem with touring England, Manowar are all well and good for hailing England, but when it comes to actually playing here...

Man, I just found out that Winters Bane is playing the same night as the Chicago Powerfest I'm going to...at 10pm. Atheist comes on at Powerfest at 10:30. I'm so pissed. Winters Bane is one of my absolute favorites.
Shattered_Future

Well, who would you rather see then? Atheist or Winter's Bane?
Stormrider

There's probably more chances in the future that Wintersbane will be touring more then Atheist...
Yeah, I'd go to Atheist over Winter's Bane.

Really cool Power/Thrash with Steve D on bass.

That sucks man. I'd probably have to go to Winters Bane despite the rarity of seeing Athiest.
This is supposedly Atheist's last Midwest show ever, and one of their last four or five period. The press release said Kelly's retiring the band forever after these last few shows.
I hadn't seen any Winters Bane dates in a long time, so I didn't think they toured much.

Well, coming from someone who thinks Reckoning Night is their best album, this one furthers the sound they were trying to get on that album.

04-05-2007, 09:21 PM
well that one with christopher lee was pretty bad *** if not just for the fact that Christopher Lee is in it.

Christopher Lee is so cool that numbers cannot quantify it.
The problem is that Fabio oversings on everything and it doesn't lend well to slow songs (IMO of course).

i guess, hmmm listening to new Sonata album and most is mid tempo, The Harvest is pretty cool and a little faster, but im ****in pissed because im not hearing and key solos.

Shattered_Future
04-05-2007, 10:48 PM
Yeah, that was the one thing I noticed skimming through. There's NO fast numbers. At least Reckoning Night had a few.

Whoa. Almost the same as me.
CEPT WE GET SYMPHONY X ON MAY 25TH!!!
I don't get any of those bands...
All 3 are amazing.
I can't make it to Sym X or Kamelot though :(:(
Heed is great. Daniel handles harsh vocals better than I'd though. Sure it's a bit more generic and a bit less flashy when compared to Lost Horizon, but it's still a quality band.

Listening to the Heed Demo 2007 now... I'm not a big melodic death metal fan because I don't like the harsh vocals much. Heed sounds to me like a cross between In Flames and Lost Horizon, all the elements of MDM that I like plus I like my power metal more guitar driven with less keyboards anyway...
I like it much better than Lost Horizon... sorry Riva :(

I don't like Heed. The music bores the crap out of me, and the vocals aren't good enough coming from a guy who hits some of the highest notes I've ever heard.

Adam lopez has the highest pitch vocals ever, its insane he soulds like a whistle/little girl.
the guy from heeds got pretty good vocals though.

Oh man, gonna be a sweet late summer.
July - Symphony X
August - Kamelot
September - Edguy
Good stuff.
Edguy are awesome... anybody listen to Sammet's side project Avantasia?
Yeah, but I like Edguy a lot more.

On the topic of new Kamelot...I like it. I don't think it's as good as The Black Halo, but it's pretty damn good. It's a lot darker than their previous stuff...I think they managed to pull off the dark vibe without compromising their musical style, unlike Sonata Arctica.
At the moment, I like it more than TBH, but that will probably change somehow.
It's a really good album and I'm suprised on how well the really dark atmosphere works, but I doubt that I'm going to rank it ahead of TBH.

Ooh..you just sold me on it. I'll try it out.

So the new Kamelot is absolutely boring.
Discuss.

I found it so boring and thought their singer sounded like a drag queen. I've never really gotten into them either but I still loved Black Halo.
But his voice didn't bother you on TBH? I think he sounds more like a woman on it than the new one.
GO is like a darker, less catchy TBH, but I still like it. I probably like TBH more though.
Cocaine
05-02-2007, 05:02 PM
His voice bothers me in general, he sings like a broadway drag-queen and I can't stand it, but the music on the new album reflects it because it seems to try way too hard to be all intense and moody.
Shattered_Future
05-02-2007, 05:35 PM
I love Khan's vocals, personally. I think he has one of the best voices in the scene, even if he does vibrato it at the end of every phrase.
The new album is kinda disappointing though, especially in the later tracks.
Cocaine
05-02-2007, 05:37 PM
He has a good voice but I don't think he's a good singer, if that makes sense. I just really dislike that style of singing, and yeah, a lot of it has to do with the vibrato.
He's one of my handful of favorite singers.
darker, less catchy TBH, but I still like it. I probably like TBH more though.
That. Usually I prefer my power metal catchy though, so I'm biased.
The new Cage friggin' rocks. Especially the title track. Such a strong way to open an album.

I think I'm starting to lose interest in a lot of power metal. I mean, I gave the album a listen, and was out of it after like 3 songs :-/
I don't like many of the "essential" power bands...like Lost Horizon. I mainly like power/thrashy stuff, like IE or Winters Bane or something.
But, then again, I still love Kamelot, Edguy and Falconer, so whatever. :p

At first I kept myself away from modern euro power. Then I started liking it and then I started finding utterly unappealing. Thanks to Slough Feg I discovered quite a few 80s traditional metal bands which I still listen to from time to time. I think they've got a different raw and exciting quality modern bands lack.

But I could listen to the opener a few times in a row. Mysteria is some real power metal goodness. The Navigator is pretty good too, but the rest of that album is beyond mediocre.

Piper Never Dies is a good track.
Agh that song is horrid. 9 minutes of the same mid paced Dio ripoffage over and over and over. And right after that blazing opener! Talk about terrible song placement. Never, never put a mid paced, plodding, near 10 minute song right after your first track. Especially if it's one that kicks your *** as hard as Mysteria.
Heh, or even put it first like Stratovarius did with the title track on Destiny. :p
