NP - FireWind - Breaking the silence
I've been listening to Firewind alot lately. They've surpassed Dream Evil in my book I gues (but that could change pretty rapidly again).

Gus G. FTW!
I got that Dream Evil bonus disk and it's sehr gut, I was just wondering what the story with it is... Why a separate bonus disc that is really an EP? Were any of these songs released somewhere else?
I've been listening to Heavenly - Virus lately. They've got some early Helloween-esque stuff that's great.

NP-Triumph for my magic steel
My favorite Rhapsody song.
I love some Firewind. I don't like any of their albums as a whole because there's songs on them that I really can't dig. However, the ones that I do like I listen to all the time, ei Kill to Live, Between Heaven and Hell, amongst others.
Rhapsody are so good that it pains me to listen to the new album.

Yeah. Take everything that was great about Rhapsody (speed, solos and kickass choruses) and replace it with string sections and voice overs and you have the new album.
Oh and ballads. Way too many ballads.

Kamelot!
I just got One Cold Winter's Night. It is really good. The live version of the songs are great and there are guest appearanes from Thomas Youngblood's wife doing the female vocals on some songs, Simone Simons of Epica does her parts on The Haunting, Snowy Shaw does Shagrath's parts on March of Mephisto, and Sascha Paeth makes an appearance playing guitar on one song as well. They have 3 live backup vocalists (so much cooler than samples). Apparently the keyboardist, Oliver Palotai is now officialy part of the band (and damn good) I still haven't checked out the 2nd disc...
/breaks out entire discography to re-listen
That sounds awesome!
I still roffle at Snowy doing vocals in Therion. It's almost like if they got Nicko McBrain to replace Tarja :lol:
EDIT: Thing is, his vocals are completely awesome.

I like Snowy regardless of what he's doing. He could be playing triangle, for ****s sake, and he'd still make it one of the most metal triangle parts ever.
Kamelot has a live DVD? Sweeeet.
And I like Turilli's solo work. Up until his new album, it sounded like Rhapsody knockoff music, but the new one is a bit different and still just as good.

...so about the awesomeness that is Kamelot...
Why are their songs so awesome? Is there something about their songwriting or structure that is superior to other power metal bands? I usually don't like bands with a keyboard player and a single guitarist as much as I do with 2 guitarists but Kamelot and perhaps Symphony X are exceptions... In the studio of course they can fatten up the sound with layered guitars but they are still quite awesome live!
Shattered_Future
01-01-2007, 02:24 PM
For one, they are a very tight band. They know how to work off of each other very well.
I think what works majorly in their favor is the songwriting abilities of both Youngblood and Khan. Never have I heard an orchestra integrated so well with heavy metal as Kamelot does. Few can touch their greatness at that. They also know how to write DIFFERENT songs. They have VARIETY. That is one of the pitfalls of power metal, the sameyness that many bands exhibit. Kamelot does not. Even after multitudes of albums, their sound is still just as new as it was before.
Now I'm kinda pissed I missed them in September. They would have been awesome to see live.

I need some suggestions for atypical power/traditional or power/prog bands. I have many many albums of bands that are all kind of blending together into generic stuff and I'm looking for standouts. My favorite stuff at the moment is Kamelot and Stormental... any suggestions?
Shattered_Future

Atypical? Try some Sonata Arctica. They do traditional neoclassicalish power metal very nicely.
You could try either Oceanborn or Wishmaster by Nightwish as well.

I just discovered another German band that have been around forever and I had never heard them... PARAGON
I got The Dark Legacy and it's great traditional/power stuff. Of course it has to be since it was produced by Piet Sielck (Iron Savior)
Any other fans?

Demons and Wizards has some of Jon's(Iced Earth) signature riffing. And Hansi's vocals over it basicly(some changes obviously). If you like either band, I'm sure you'll like Demons and Wizards :)

Nightwish is pretty much done recording their new album. They just need to pick a replacement from a large pool of candidates (I believe 2000) and do the vocals. Do you guys think the new singer will match up or surpass Tarja?

Considering Tarja was a fairly average soprano, and there's THOUSANDS of classical sopranos out there, I'm sure their replacement will be more than worthy. I think people will reject the band because the singer may sound different, but I have high hopes (teehee) for where the band is going.

I never got into D&W myself and I'm actually not sure why.
I love BG and I like IE, and a combination of bombastic BG choruses with the heaviness of IE sounds like it would kill... but the actual result always felt like left over BG material rather than the best work of a hybrid band.

There this guy on a local metal forum that's selling some sweet power metal (from what I know) at a reasonable price. I've already met up with him and bought 4 CD's at $10 each....
Angra - Hunters And Prey
Angra - Rebirth
Bal-Sagoth - The Power Comsic
Edguy - Hellfire Club
Now the CD's were in great condition, and I'm interested in maybe meeting up with him again and buying some more, however, I don't know much about some of the other artists. So here's the list of what he has left (and what I don't have).....
Annihilator – Carnival Diablos
At Vance – The Evil In You
Avantasia – The Metal Opera
Brainstorm – Soul Temptation
Freedom Call – Crystal Empire
Gamma Ray – Somewhere Out in Space
Gamma Ray – No World Order
Heavenly – Sign of the Winner
Insania – Sunrise in Riverland
Imperanon – Stained
Mob Rules – Savage Land
Nocturnal Rites – New World Messiah
Sinergy – Suicide By My Side
Sonata Arctica – Reckoning Day
Stratovarius – Infinite Visions (DVD)
So I ask, which of those would be a good buy??

Stoic
01-31-2007, 12:55 PM
Well Freedom Call are your typical cheesy euro-power with happy choirs but I remember liking it because it was catchy in the way Avantasia is. Love it or hate it band.
Brainstorm are aggressive power metal, no cheesiness here. Heavy guitars, rough vocals in the vain of Barlow and tasteful, sometimes almost prog sounding keys. Sound like a less technical metallica (MoP) and a more modern straight forward Iced Earth, but these comparisons are rather vague since nothing better comes to my mind :-\ Sometimes they sound a bit too generic to me but they have their moments.
Definitely get the Gamma Ray but think twice about the other two, especially Freedom Call. You can always save money for a slough feg album <3. Or Cage \m/
Are you still on dial up? If so I could name you a couple of sites where you could hear some samples...

Yeh, I like some Thrash too (Overkill's still my favorite metal band), but I was never huge into Annihilator. Is that one kind of similar to new Testament with the agreesion and heaviness?

For everyone interested, Wizard's new disc GOOCHAN is available for streaming on my website. Please, don't link to it from other sites or I'll be forced to remove it. That is, if anyone out there besides me listens to them. ;)

Dude. I had heard Odin and Head of the Deceiver back in the day and they sound much different now. More "modern". Less speed. :-\

Damn, Brainstorm are my fault :upset:
Heh....no worry. They were all in near mint condition, and only 10 bucks each. The day before I won 40 bucks in poker.....so the way I look at it, I didn't loose anything :)
Worst comes to worse, I could sell it to my local CD sotre for $6 bucks.....but I like it enough to keep it, for now.
Brainstorm are awesome, and that's a good album by them too.
The first two or three tracks on Liquid Monster are better, but after that LM goes to hell, while ST stays solid.

I own Ambiguity which I dislike but I liked what I heard off Soul Temptation. I think this is how Brainstorm are supposed to sound like.

hmmm, maybe I'm not giving them a good enough listen. What do you guys think really stands out about them?

Heh, yeh that's one reason why I wanted to give them the go. They bore me though. They're riffs aren't to interesting, and they all sound similar.....and the drum patterns are very very dull and don't change up to much. The singer's decent, but he doesn't make the band much more interesting.
I'll give it a full spin tonight, and see if my thoughts change...

Hey, right when I ever see one of those floating around somewhere's, I'm sure I'll get it. I'd do that with a lot of CD's. The problem is availability.

Email me:
1. Name and Address
2. Your order
3. Your method of payment
I accept Paypal (with 5% fee), Money Orders, and US CASH.
I haven't purchased anything because it's a US based label and I wouldn't bother with the proccess and all (I have euros he takes dollars). It's a reliable place, take a look at Metal-Rules trading bored and you'll see he's got a pretty good name. I don't have a credit card or paypal or bank account so whenever I bought an album from abroad I sent hidden cash (old school way).
Heh, I prefer using Amazon.com, even though the range is fairly poor at times, and I do get raped on price a lot.
