Whats a Dragonforce album that would get me into them?
Well, they only have two, Valley of the Damned and Sonic Firestorm. Both of them are great. I think my favorite is probably Sonic Firestorm if I HAD to pick one of them. Definitely check them out, amazing band.

Well let's talk about another band. Blind Guardian. I was into them, then out of them and now I am back into them. Jeez, whenever I listen to them I just simply feel cool. That's it. Just cool...

Dark Elf is off of Nightfall in Middle Earth. That and A Night at the Opera are brilliant albums. I recommend either. The Soulforged is actually the song that a got a friend of mine into them.

Dunno why I'm bumping this - I hate most power metal. Most of it, quite frankly lacks power. If its too clean and nice then it loses what makes it metal.
However, I must say that Twisted Tower Dire, Ironsword, Ritual Steel are excellent bands - check em out.

I quite like that chorus.
For similar speed...try Sonata Arctica and maybe Ensiferum.

I just discovered Children of Bodom. Those guys eat chains for breakfast. They have long hair and play the ultimate shred guitars: Jacksons. What more can I say. They own.

And why is that? It's a fitting adjective for the genre, both meanings of the word. How ****ing politically correct to point out worthless **** like that.
And Manowar covers does indeed rule. Even Into Glory Ride. Sign Of The Hammer is quite possibly one of the coolest metal covers ever made. And definately one of the best Manowar albums.
Manowar were pretty gay, but other power metal bands don't come across as being gay at all.
But at the end of the day, it doesn't matter aslong as the music kicks arse.

I just think using the word like that is stale, tasteless, and immature. It's not funny, it's not witty, and it's really grautitous considering just how nebulous the English language is. Of course, I was also beginning to think no one around here gave a flying **** what I say, anyway.
And besides that, the only connection Power Metal has to gay subculture is wearing leather and chains, and all metal does that courtesy of Rob Halford who got the look from the England gay bar scene. So calling Power Metal gay isn't politically incorrect, it just doesn't make sense.

You missed my point. YOU are PC. It seems that the best way to come across as semi-intelligent on boards nowadays is to make half-assed remarks about others spelling and/or vocabulary. The language on messageboards has allways been kinda vocal, I mean, who the **** cares? The worst thing is that you cunts drive threads completely off-topic.
Power Metal is still the gayest sub-genre of metal. It has grown to become pretty damn parodic and melo-dramatic, but there's still a lot of great bands out there. I actually like where things are headed nowadays, it seems that more and more heavy metal inspired bands are entering the scene, and the Stratovarius/Helloween copies are not so frequent anymore.

Now you're just getting really assinine. You completely missed my point. I don't give a rat's *** if you think I'm being politically correct, and I'm not trying to look intelligent because honestly I don't have to prove anything to you. I'm secure enough in my own intelligence that I talk however I want, so long as it's within the rules.
The worst thing is that you cunts drive threads completely off-topic.
Okay, dude, seriously. Don't get into a pissing contest with me, I'm not in the ****ing mood.
All I was saying is that I didn't think "gay" was an appropriate word for describing Power Metal. It has nothing to do with being politically correct. In this case, I just don't think it was the right word. I know gay people and they don't see any connection between gay culture and Power Metal.
Does that clear things up?

Well, I've been looking through some of the bands mentioned here at last. I've come to a conclusion. I need to buy the following albums in this order, ASAP:
Edguy- Hellfire Club
Nightwish- Once (I pirated half of it)
Lost Horizon- Flame to hte Ground Beneath
Running Wild- Black Hand Inn
I so regret not having discovered Edguy sooner.
s0ldsoul4roknrol

That is true. So should I put Lost Horizon, Grave Digger or 3 Inches of Blood? Or any other suggestions for bands? Maybe Edguy or Running Wild although I've never heard either, they seem to be popular here.
Steerpike
11-12-2004, 05:27 PM
Edguy started out with a more classic sound, but have taken a heavier approach on Hellfire Club.
Running Wild are also being described as Pirate Metal. It's so over-the-top you can't help but love it.
If that's any help...

From what I've read, Hellfire Club is a good album to start with. It doesn't have the operatic sounds of their earlier albums, but it's still very popular and very accessible. I'm gonna snag it tomorrow if possible.
What I find interesting is how they wear their influences on their sleeves. You can tell Tobias Sammet is influenced by Dickinson/Halford/Tate, but he still has his own vocal quality. The riffs may sound Iron Maiden or Judas Priest inspired, but there's still a distinctive "Edguy" style. It's a great to see a band so unashamedly flaunt their "metal-ness."

After pirating half of the ablum, I saw Savatage's Hall of the Mountain King available at a local shop for 10 bucks. ****ing good deal. It's been on heavy rotation the last couple of days. So I'm here to spread the word of Criss Oliva's sadly underrated genius.
Savatage isn't pure Power Metal like Blind Guardian, but they've got elements such as the songwriting and strong melody. Check them out whenever you get the chance.

**** yeah! I didn't know there was a powermetal thread until someone told me in a thread I made searching for powermetal bands. Well anyway I'm pretty new to powermetal so ignore any idiotic remarks I may make for now. Back in the day Yngwie Malmsteen had some band but I do not know there name, but were they powermetal? I have heard songs like "Fire and Ice" and "Eclipse" that seem powermetal-ish to my ears, am I wrong? Please provide me with the name with this old band even if it isn't powermetal. I heard Iced Earth and Nightwish were considered powermetal, I have never thought that, what I have heard of Iced Earth doesn't seem to have the fast tempo like alot of otehr bands do. Same going with Nightwish, which I have loved for awhile now. Also I know of Hammerfall, but I heard three seperate songs and two were slow songs and the other was just boring, and it sounding nothing like what I think of powermetal.
Also, I am the only fan of powermetal around here that I know of, everyone around here is into Slipknot crap, Rap, or Country. I have found peopel into metal liek All That Remains and such, but they would think powermetal is pussy music, heh, any tips on enlightening these fools?

That would be Yngwie J. Malmsteen's Rising Force. Also, Malmsteen is a neo-classic guy, and mostly considered Shred Metal instead of Power.
[quote]I heard Iced Earth and Nightwish were considered powermetal, I have never thought that, what I have heard of Iced Earth doesn't seem to have the fast tempo like alot of otehr bands do. Same going with Nightwish, which I have loved for awhile now.
Iced Earth is indeed Power Metal, but with an emphasis on riffs typical of Thrash. Power Metal doesn't necessarily have to have a fast tempo, even though it does require a high degree of musicianship.
Nightwish is Power/Symphonic.
For me, the defining characteristics for Power Metal are the esoteric/sword-n'-sorcery-themed lyrics, a driving rhythm section, and a tight sense of melody.
Also, I am the only fan of powermetal around here that I know of, everyone around here is into Slipknot crap, Rap, or Country. I have found peopel into metal liek All That Remains and such, but they would think powermetal is pussy music, heh, any tips on enlightening these fools?
There really is no way to enlighten people. Sometimes it takes a while to grow on them, other times they're just going to continue not liking Power Metal. In the case of the latter, I just enjoy getting under their skin about it by singing out choruses from Blind Guardian and Rhapsody, shouting "Death to false metal!", and just making overall sarcastic comments. I'm such a bastard.

Well, I'm listening to more Children of Bodom. Musically, an awesome band, and I'm starting to get more accustomed to Alexi's vocals. I got the limited edition (+ bonus DVD) in November and since then it hasnt got out of my cd player. The first half of the album features very strong tracks but in the second half the songs become slower and more emotional (including piano parts and sensitive moments). At first I was kinda disappointed but I soon got over it. All the songs are so addictive (=super catchy) and well constructed and have incredible bridges and instumental parts. Mark Prator from Iced Earth plays drums on the album too but he's not a permanent member of the band.

I haven't heard any of them. If it's with Hansi it sounds worth while checking out.

It's a pretty cool album. It's basically Iced Earth with Hansi on vocals and Blind Guardian-ish melodies. It also contains 'Fiddler on the Green', which is the most emotional song ever in the history of time. And yes, I'm serious about that.
That's a great song. While I agree that the vocals are gay, that's what's so great about it.
Bah! The vocals are not 'gay', unless you mean gay as in happy. In which case yes, they are quite gay. Also, don't mind Dargon. If it's not fast and mindless he doesn't like it.

Fiddler on the Green is a crazy cool song. No matter what, if I listen to that album I always have to listen to it. The accoustic parts are great and Hansi's voice is just perfect to give it sort of a rich but at the same time eerie tone. I bought the album yesterday and I can't stop listening to it.
Also another band which im not sure counts as power metal but has some really good vocal harmonies is Into Eternity I think they are almost progressive thrash, but the vocals have a hint of the power metal feel to them. (slightly off topic)

Into Eternity are a really cool band. They're the band with two vocalists, the higher pitched power metal one and the growl-y death metal one, correct?

Actually, what's interesting about that is all 5 members sing. The singer does both the high death metal vocals and the power metal tones. one of the guitarist does the low death metal vocals and then the bassist, drummer, and the second guitarist all sing backups. Mainly clean backups I think.

Ah, that’s cool then. I think it's really kickass when all the members in a band can sing, it really adds something to the music.
Anyways, I've only heard a couple songs by this band. Could anyone recommend some good songs of theirs to check out?

Well I suggest any song off Buried in Oblivion. I haven't heard too much of their other two albums. If you like the clean then go for Black Sea of Agony. The Guitarist does some sick clean vocal harmony. My personal favorite is the song 3 Dimensional Aperture.
EDIT: Dio owns

I'm just wondering, what really is defined as power metal?

Good question. I guess "Iron Maiden on speed" pretty much defines power metal. Usually power metal bands are very melodic, with lots of high pitched vocals and harmonized vocals/guitar lines. They usually use a lot of palm muted 16th note riffs. Also, keyboards and orchestral/classical elements are quite common.
I hope that helps.

Don't forget that they often feature an intense, driving rhythm section and the lyrics often have a supernatural, metaphysical, or sword & sorcery theme.

The operetic(sp?) vocals are another common element.

Well, I wouldn't say operatic so much as theatrical. Power metal vocalists tend to have a variety of training backgrounds, but their voices are all the kind trained to project all the way to the cheap seats.

I *hate* that band. I hate Ralf scheepers. He is a sucky vocalist if i have ever heard one. He ruined Gamma Ray on their early albums. He *does not* sound like Rob Halford. He's fat. He has no balls. He sucks the mighty suck.... And he eats babies!

Brilliant album. In my top 5 PM albums.
I picked up a Wintersun album yesterday, I'd say its amazing but to be fair its not.
The music arrangements and everything like that is great, but the album is let down by the singing. I know that its the guy from Ensiferum who did all the work for the album, but the vocals are sometimes difficult to hear and can sometimes spoil the song.
So - great music, not so great vocals.
I found out that my Ensiferum album won't be here for another two weeks or so which is annoying because they're one of my favourite bands at the moment.

I heard a few songs. They were, meh, alright. I found them pretty boring though, but I guess I'll have to give it a better listen.
Oh, I got Jag Panzer - Thane to the Throne a few days ago, pretty good so far. I don't think I listened to all of it yet.

In MY opinion i'd say Rhapsody. Though Evergrey are a very very good band.
Oh, and today I got Kotipelto - Coldness. This cd is so good. I recomend it to anyone who liked Stratovarius.
Also i'd like to say that guy from Children of Bodom did a very very awsome job on the keyboards ;)
