What do you guys think of Lanfear? I'm reading the Wheel Of Time series and there is a character named Lanfear. So just for kicks I went out and did a good search on the name and it turns out there is a German prog/power metal band with that name. I just wondered if they're any good. 2 of their albums have very high reviews on M-A, but those can be hit or miss so I thought I'd get some opinions here before I tried to find anything by them.

my sister has a pet rat called lanfear, its an evil creature that bites you and tries to suck out your soul...just thought i would say (as it is named after the wheel pof time character)

Listening to Edguy's Theatre of Salvation. I havn't listened to this album in a loong time. This is good stuff. I really need to buy some Edguy albums. If only I had the money to buy all the albums I wanted...

I almost bought that album a while back. I walked out with Sonic Firestorm instead. I'm not sure if I did a mistake or not, because for me Edguy > Dragonforce. Sonic Firestorm is okay. I really love the songs My Spirit Will Go On, Fury of the Storm and Soldiers of the Wasteland. hose are the only songs I listen fromt he album, usually. And that's when I do listen to that album...

Very true. I love his voice.

ExitWound
11-03-2006, 07:44 PM
I agree. Snowy took a lot of the band. The songs strike a similar chord to The Book of Heavy Metal, the songs that snowy didn't write. It's softer and more hard rock than Evilized or DragonSlayer was. Niklas voice has matured though and keeps the band sounding really really solid.

If you want to hear some samples of it, head on over to my site. (http://www.theexitwound.com) I have roughly half the album up for listening. Don't kill my bandwith please. :)

The disc came with a second 3" miniCD with 5 bonus songs. Total of 17 songs. One of the tracks My Number One is a cover of the hit single from Elena Paparizou, winner of the 50th Eurovision Contest. Being from America, I have absolutely no idea what this is all about sooo... Wikipedia was my friend. However, it's probably one of the more unique Dream Evil songs they've ever done.

I just got it yesterday and am actually a bit disapointed. Fire! Battle! In Metal! may be one of their best and most *** kicking songs ever, not to mention the great sing along quality. However, the rest of the album flat out bored me. All the choruses sounded similar and nothing got me going. Oh well, maybe it will grow on me.

It was released Oct 27th. I'm uploading it as we speak along with the You single (has a Blue Oyster Cult cover song on it) and the video for Ashes to the Stars. The video looks like Marco is singing the verses and Tommi is singing the choruses on that song.

I have a question, perhaps I should do a poll...

Keyboards or no keyboards in power metal?

I tend to prefer power metal bands where the keyboards are buried in the mix and used more for atmosphere or effects then for key song elements with a couple exceptions (Symphony X is the only one I can think of off the top of my head)

Deth
11-16-2006, 01:52 PM
Seeing how Rhapsody and Blind Guardian have keyboards, I will have to say with.

Of course there are so many great bands without them.

Though keyboards can be seen as a keysong elements at times. They can add a lot of atmosphere. But, I see what you meant.

Riva

I'm torn, because some bands like Lost Horizon could do just as well without keyboards, but others like Rhapsody would be less enjoyable, to my mind, at least.

Shattered_Future
11-16-2006, 08:22 PM
It depends on how keyboards are used. If they are used right, and enhance the atmosphere tenfold, then keep them. If they are just there for no good reason, chuck them.

As for leads, unless they're extraordinarily good, get rid of them. Adagio comes to mind as a "power metal" band with an unbelievable keyboardist.

When a song is keyboard dominated then it loses the "power" and the songs have to be guitar-riff driven to be "metal" in my book. I agree that some bands use keyboards to create atmosphere and they definitely can be used to give a song a lot more depth. There just seem to be a lot of bands that have a keyboardist when they could have a 2nd guitarist playing very similar parts instead and the songs would sound a lot more powerful...and a lot more METAL :)

Shattered_Future
11-16-2006, 08:35 PM
I agree there, although there are plenty of bands who have 2 guitarists and don't know how to use them.

Riva
11-16-2006, 08:36 PM
I'd rather have a good keyboardist than a second guitarist who just mimics the first. Not many bands that can pull that off succesfully. Be succesfully I mean like Judas Priest successful.

So, I must check out Lost Horizon, Running Wild and Wuthering Heights. Just though I'de mention that.

I'm not the biggest fan of...well 'traditional' metal. I like my power metal to be like...I'm thinking of Galloglass right now. I like it less when they go too much into traditional metal. Winters Bane are an exception though.

I'm not too sure if that was really voicing my thoughts. I'll be back later to fix that up :)

Oh, I'd probably say Rhapsody or Gamma Ray.

Riva
11-16-2006, 08:52 PM
Alright, Galloglass' first album Legends From Now And Nevermore might be more to your liking, because on Heavenseeker they went into a more thrashy mood.

As for Running Wild, you cannot go past either Port Royal or Black hand Inn, especially if you like Gamma Ray.

Tyr

okay, im just getting into power metal, and the only bands i know of are Stratovarius, Savatage (if they count), Dragonforce, and Dream Theater (again, if they count)
suggest some other good power metal bands

Tyr
11-16-2006, 10:00 PM
Rhapsody of Fire, Blind Guardian and Gamma Ray.

Riva
11-16-2006, 10:01 PM
Dream Theater are definitely not, but Savatage in the '90s were definitely power metal. I'd suggest going onto Galloglass, Helloween, Gamma Ray, and Dungeon. I know you already like Running Wild, so you should be fine with Galloglass.

Shattered_Future

Sabaton
Blind Guardian (highly recommended)
Sonata Arctica
Nightwish (highly recommended)
Galloglass
Running Wild
Lost Horizon
Symphony X (a bit proggier than the rest, but still unbelievable)
Adagio (again, like Symphony X)
Dream Evil
Dungeon

Rhapsody

That should be good for starters. :thumb:

Riva

Ok, then you'll be all set to check out:

Secret Of The Runes and Theli for the more symphonic power side, and Lepaca Kliffoth for the symphonic death.

Basically, their first two albums were death metal, but Beyond Sanctorum features more progressive elements, like strings, etc, and is more melodic than Of Darkness...

After that, you have Lepaca Kliffoth, and then they delved fully into the symphonic power metal side: From Theli to Deggial to Vovin to Secret Of The Runes.

Their latest two, Lemuria and Sirius B are more power metal, with less symphonic elements. But they still have plenty of operatic vocalists, etc, and are great albums.

I'm happy to upload an album or two for you, if you want. My favourite albums are Secret Of The Runes and Sirius B.

Yes. Yes I did.

What would I have to do to get you to upload that bonus disk? :naughty:

Disturbing implications aside, I considered uploading it out of the goodness of my heart, but now that I know you'll do something for it...

I'm asking Galloglass' Legends From Now and Nevemore for Christmas :)

On a different note, I got out Elements Part 1 the other day. I was liking it(those rare times I was talking about). It's not as bad as I qalways put it out to be me thinks. Some songs have really good chorus' .

Strat have always had good choruses though. They are a very catchy band, if a bit cookie cutter.

Yeah. They're albums are so damn expensive though.

Piracy, my boy, is the answer. :p

Stormrider

Yeah, I'll do that with Episode one day :p

I'm relistening to some of the power metal stuff I have on my computer. Dark Moor right now. It's decent. Nothing I see myself praising though.

EDIT:The song Nevermore howver is good stuff. Best song from them I listened to so far.

Don't listen to them Jammie. Do the right thing, and keep our power metal artists eating steak instead of noodles.

Do it for Lord Tim!

You don't like Dark Moor ?

I was quite enjoying it after :-/

No, don't listen to Leo and his piracy pleadings. Dark Moor are awesome.

Dark Moor are pretty cool. I should listen to them more...

/has...*cough*...pirated albums of theirs...:(

I liked Dark Moor best with Elisa Martin on vocals, she has a very unique voice. I have all her other projects, an album as guest vocalist with Fairyland, one album with Hamka, and 2 Dreamaker albums. All of them are quite good power metal albums but my favorite remains The Fall of Melnibone

I guess I don't have to download one of their albums. I'll just get a few more songs to see which one I need to buy :p

Or, I could just download it. We'll see what happens...I'm in no hurry though. The songs I have right now are satisfying.
