Hey thread

Does anyone in here like Nocturnal Rites? I picked up their Shadowland album the other day, mainly because I had £6 to spare and its got a great cover...it didn't really blow me away or anything, but for a PM album it was pretty solid.

Nepenthe

Nocturnal Rites are almost too solid for their own good. It's very good stuff, but they just never seem to do anything extraordinary, or out of the norm.

Steerpike
08-07-2006, 08:40 PM
They're okay. Not really burning up my wishlist, but still cool.

EDIT

Just finished the first song for my Urban Arcana series. I might make an EP out of this if I can ever get a band together. Might even do the vocals myself if I can get a teacher.

The title is The Veil of Shadow.

Teeming crowds and neon signs
Seething masses unaware
Roaming streets and alleyways
A world of danger everywhere

What you don't know is very real
A flash of movement, flash of steel

Visions that you dream about
Tales of creatures now unknown
Storybook and rhyme shall tell
Our population's not alone

The ancient dream world comes alive
They're now looking to survive

Veil of Shadow
A tide between worlds
Bringing forth the stuff of all our dreams
Veil of Shadow

Broadswords swapped for Glock 19s
Sorcery on the internet
Monsters in society
Spirits moving the planchette

The fog and darkness leave behind
A visitor of Shadowkind

Veil of Shadow
A tide between worlds
Bringing forth the horrors from our dreams
Veil of Shadow

Luck to those gifted and cursed with sight beyond ours
If you can see the magic, then it can see you back

Veil of Shadow
A tide between worlds
Bringing forth the stuff of all our dreams
Veil of Shadow

Veil of Shadow
A tide beyond worlds
Bringing forth the mysteries of our dreams
Veil of Shadow

(spoken)
I do not know how I came to be here. All I can say is that I am here now. That is enough.

I think it could be better speed up a little, but not a ton.

In the solo, the muted strings parts really broke up the flow, although it did create an interesting effect of the fast pulloffs starting on the two of each bar.

Those riffs are killer, as is the overall structure and placing of the vocals. :thumb:

I'll play around with the tempo a bit. I still need to work out a decent percussion track, though. That'll definately make a difference. I'll see what I can do about fixing the flow of the solo as well.

The riffs are a little bit of Iron Maiden and Iced Earth combined with Nekromantix. Whatever's on my playlist that week tends to reflect in my writing.

Only way I can think of is by recording it in Audacity and then converting it. I just tried doing it and my Audacity has decided to boycott any function that's useful though.

I've been getting into Running Wild lately, Under Jolly Roger is a VERY good album.

Nepenthe
08-20-2006, 06:12 PM
Just so you all know, the new Falconer is sensational. They've taken a much folkier approach with this one, and it works out. There's alot more keyboards involved, but it's still predominantly riff based. It's awesome, I suggest it to all.

Riva
08-20-2006, 08:49 PM
Are the choruses as catchy/folky as on their S/T?

Nepenthe
08-20-2006, 08:55 PM
Much folkier than anything they've ever done, but I'm torn on the catchy part. A few of the choruses are Falconer-grade catchy material, but some of them aren't. None of the songs are bad, just not too heavy on the catchiness. Regardless, it's an excellent cd. After three listens since I found it a few days ago, I'd put it tied for second with Chapters From A Vale Forlorn, and right behind Sceptre Of Deception as their best.

I miss Gobel, but Blad sounds just as good as he did on the earlier stuff. And I really enjoy the more prominant keyboards.

I will say, though, that Legend And The Lore (from the new one) is the folkiest song they've ever made, and one of their best overall. Other than that, the best tracks are Northwind, Waltz With The Dead (catchiest chorus on the album), Catch The Shadows, Tower Of The Queen, Long Gone By, and Home Of The Knave. The first half of the cd is amazing, but while still good, the second half isn't quite as good as the first. Home Of The Knave is the only song that really stands out on the latter half, but if the whole cd was as good as the first this would be tied with Sceptre as their greatest.

Wow, you really think so? Wintersun is one of my favourite albums. Really all-around inspired songwriting. They annihilate every other Finnish-style power metal band I can think of. It's very melodic but interesting in structure, which is sometimes hard to pull off, and obviously the musicianship is terrific (code for he's a freaking beast at guitar).

Now Symphony X, there's a yawnfest.

It's so good, that everyone who doesn't like Maiden should even listen to it, even the faggy magazines like Q and Mojo who don't ever give metal albums good reviews are praising it.

This is not necessarily a good thing...Anyway, the thing is I doubt someone like me, who believes maiden faded somewhere in the early 90s, would like the new album. I think it's mostly directed to fans of the new maiden era (post brave new world)...

Really though, it's very different to anything the band have done before, whilst remaining true to Maiden.

...you're making me curious...If I were to listen to a song off the new album, which one would you suggest?

The Legacy, These colours don't run, The longest day or for the greater good of God.
They're my favourites, but every song is excellent. This is Maiden with something new, proggier and very mature, which is I befitting, really.
It's strangely like Steve's early influences, like King Crimson, or Jethro Tull.

I heard Hansi had a pretty bad stage presence on that DVD. Is his singing as good live as in the studio?

Well, at some of the high screaming parts, he sings them lower. But still, when he does do the higher stuff and all, it's awsome :)

Though, I understand that it's almost impossible to sing a BG song they way it is in studio live...

He has a belly :p He's alright. A bit nervous and not much communicative though.

He still talkd with the crowd a little, but what he's saying, I have no idea. And yeah, the belly :p

What do you mean a bit nervous ?

Nervous about the show. He seems like he's a bit cautious at first.

Hmm, yeah I see what you mean. I noticed that At first, he doesn't do as much of the screams/higher notes then around half way to the end.

Heh, even the big guys get stage fright.

That makes me feel a little better.

I really wish that all my favourite bands didn't lose their vocalists. I was very depressed last night, actually, about that fact.

Who lost their vocalist now?

Losing vocalists is not usually a good thing for a band...granted, there have been exceptions, but it's what people associate most with a band most of the time.

Lost Horizon, Galloglass, Dream Evil for a while, luckily Niklas and Peter saw the light.
