Polished in what way? Production-wise? I think the Tyrant is doing a great job.

I agree that some of their tunes are skippable though, and some of their compositions are a little boring. Still, there's plenty of their material that is pure quality, so I'm most likely picking up the new album too.

I don't think so. I haven't been able to find much information, save for a couple of CD reviews in Russian and some stuff on the guitarist's side project.

Page 20 this thread was on. 20!!! That’s disgusting.

Anyways, has anyone hear heard of a band called Magic Kingdom? I picked up their latest CD ‘Metallic Tragedy’ and it’s awesome. Symphonic Power/Speed Metal at it’s best. The title track is amazing. It’s a 13 minute mini-opera (literally; it has a plot, characters, dialogue, etc) with each character represented by a different kind of metal singer. There’s the Nightwish-esq female soprano, the death metal growler, the black metal shrieker, the bands normal vocalist and I think there’s another guy in there too. The voices all work together to form an incredible atmosphere. The whole kicks more *** than words can describe.

Absolutely awesome man. I bought *cough*downloaded*cough* that album a couple of days ago and i haven't stop listening to it since. I swear i could listen to Metallic Tragedy (the song) forever. If you guys haven't got this yet go out and buy it NOW.

Has anyone heard of the David Shankle Group? I've only heard one song (Ashes to Ashes) and would like to know if they're worth checking out further.

From that song, they're not power metal in a Sonata Arctica/Stratovarius style, but reminded me more of Iron Maiden (with a less impressive vocalist and some keyboards). Seemed like the place to ask.

I've never heard their first album, nor been able to find it online (Amazon doesn't have it). The same goes with the guitarist's side project (Iron Mask, I think it's called).

After listening to Angra I feel it necissary to to put on a pink tutu and do a little ballet dance. Yeah, I don't really enjoy them at all, although they are more manly that Skylark, (if only JUST) who i think must have the smallest testicles in metal. (even 'small testicles' is pretty **** generous).

Alright, speaking of women in metal :p, who do you all think are the biggest puffs running around in power metal nowdays. I think it is skylark: Power metal from Italy (go figure).

I haven't heard to much of Primal Fear (only their first and last), but from what i have, i have some really mixed feelings. I HATE Schepper's voice. He is NOT Halford, and his works with Gamma Ray make those albums unlistenable for me. (Thank god he was given the boot).

Ok. That out of the way, the music sounds like some really generic german speed/power. But they are NOT Judas Priest. On the other hand, it's german speed/power, and nobody can hate that. :D. Blind Guardian: I've never experienced such a thing before (at least not at this rage). BG have gradually grown in me. After the first listen (of SFB) I was like "nah...ok" and after a few days out of nowhere a song came to my mind and subconciously I started whispering the chorus and later certain parts of other songs!

Then of course I gave a second chance to the album, and a third and a fourth and a 104th! The same thing happened with the rest of BG albums. They are all so addictive although I dont get excited at first! I cant help having a BG melody in mind every day!

Anyone experience the same thing?

currently playing (in my head of course!): "Guardian Guardian Guardian of the Blind"

Btw, anyone got the new BG DVD?

really? Infinate is my favourite Staratovarius album lol. well, along with "elements pt.1" and "visions" is close behind.

I bought it on pretty much that recommendation, that it was one of their best, if not the best. Hunting High and Low was okay, but the rest of the album didn't appeal to me at all. It's weird though, because I know I like their basic style (I love Sonata Arctica, after all).

Blind Guardian got me into the genre and are still at the top of their game. I am strongly looking forward to the DVD and a new album whenever they get around to it.

Blood On My hands is an awesome song. But i'm not sure if their will be another one. Jon seems pretty busy with Iced Earth and who knows what Hansi is up to with Blind Guardian. They were planning to make music together since the early 1990's and it took them awhile to make a band. But theisr always hope, i prefer D&W to Iced Earth and Blind Guardian anyways.

Bump..

Ouch, this thread hasn't been touched in a week. This is bad. Oh well.

During the week, i've been listening to a few particular albums, one being Ambermoon - Facing The Storm - Trad/Power from Italy - and they are really something! There is a big maiden influence, with more of a power metal feel. Epic, melodic, competent and **** interesting metal! I urge you all to check them out, Ambermoon, excellent stuff, you'll love them. :D

:amaze: Holy shi.t., how is it?

I really liked it. I've never had the chance to watch them before, not even in a video clip! Athough some personal favourite songs were missing I enjoyed the whole show (no need to mention that the set, the cameras, the sound was very good).

I was curious about they way the would perform the vocals especially in some certain songs like another holy war for example. Of course the live versions differ a lot but this is where the point is.

The highlights were: the bards song, almost entirely sung by the fans (who had perfect timing and were in tune as Andre said), Mirror Mirror (traditionally) and then Valhalla...People kept siging "Valhalla - Why've you ever forgotten me" even after the end of the song! They stucked, they didnt know how to stop them  ! It was the ultimate hit of the night!

Hansi was talking to the fans between the songs (not much though) in german so I couldnt understand him :(. Thankfully the extras (LOTS of interesting and funny stuff) had subtitles.

It's a subjective matter of course but in overall I'm very satisfied and it worth my 25 euros.

Vanden Plas
Steel Prophet
Amaran
Valley's Eve
Last Tribe
Stormwind
Requiem
Gaia Epicus
Dreamtale
Power Quest

Anybody else heard of any of them? Do you like them?

My favorite would be Power quest. Recently got there Neverworld CD, which combines current power metal sounds with influences such as Europe and Aldo Nova.

Also wanted to mention that Dragonforce, Edguy, Nightwish, Dream Evil and Pagan's Mind are some of my favorite bands already mentioned.

And if I'm not mistaken, they said their next album will be based on the Dragonlance novels.

Now that I've seen all the bands talked about here, it makes me sad that I've sworn off file-sharing for the sake of financial and legal security. Oh well. I guess I'll just have to get a job during Christmas break.

Pantera is not power metal. I always thought of them as more of a thrash band, but they're one of those groups that really don't belong in any particular genre.

Power metal is typically defined by a tight sense of melody, usually a strongly epic feel and often with sword and sorcery lyrics. A lot of power metal bands use a lot of double bass drumming, and the ones I'm familiar with have some sort of classical or global influences.

Quoted from the "Rhapsody-esque Bands" thread:

Whenever me and a particular two of my friends hang out, we call ourselves The Holy Thunderforce and drive around late at night playing powermetal and screaming ye old english words out the window, and then we generally try and perform home invasions on our other, sleeping friends.

I want to party with these guys. One thing I would love to do is drive through town blasting Kings of Metal and Holy Thunderforce. Have everyone in the car sing along for added affect.

Where can it take us now?

Spread your wings and fly
Up to the heavens
Where the clouds pass us by
Spread your wings and fly
Climbing the skies
Where lightning once would strike

I feel the change is coming now
I feel the wind blowing a gale
I see the clouds are drifting apart
I see the sky turning to grey

Spread your wings and fly
Up to the heavens
Where the clouds pass us by

no, they really were not. Pantera played more hair metal in the 80's than got into thrash when Phil joined. just because they had a cd titled "power metal" has nothing to do with the genre power metal. they lack every fundamental aspect that makes a band a power metal group.

alexi's wife, Kimberly Goss, sings for Sinergy...apprently she isnt much of a looker from what ive heard haha. i think a guy like alexi could get any woman he wanted in scandanavia lol.

Haha, I'd seriously doubt that. A scawny little ****er with eyeliner and nail polish? Not very Brad Pitt'ish. It's probably more to it than looks, though.

Both Keepers is a good start. I'd recommend some Running Wild, i'm really getting into them at the present time. Death Or Glory would be a good one to start off with. Excellent band. If you like Helloween's first few, you'll love running wild.

NEW BANDS!!

Black Majesty
Cryonic Temple
Wuthering Heights
The Ring

all cool stuff, Wuthering Heights is incredible folkish power metal...their vocalist is remisnicant of Ronnie James Dio.

Now why the hell hasn't Sonata Artica been mentioned about 30 more times? That's a problem. Sonata brought me into Power Metal. They keep me here. I will forever bow to them. As everyone else should.

Oh yeah, CoB are ok too. :thumb:

Had to register just for that.

i like Sonata Artica, but they have more weak tracks than ones i really get into. Silence i liked alot, Winterhearts Guild had its moments, and Eleptica was no better...just not one of my favourites, though they were one of the first bands i tried out.

^The singers voice in Sonata is fantastic, they're one of my fav. Power Metal bands.

If people want a power metal band that don't have a high-pitched singer, I recommend Ensiferum. Its power metal, with Cookie-Monster style vocals.

If people have trouble finding songs by them, I could send some over msn, my address is slipknotfan@hotmail.com. (Its an old address, I'm too lazy to change it)

The hallmark of good Power Metal is twofold in my opinion:

1. It begs you turn the speakers up with each bar.
2. You can just your head down to and rock.

Rhapsody for example is the only band that's ever gotten me to bang my head to violins. Manowar has had me pumping my fists in the air the choruses. Blind Guardian you just want to sing along to so many of the songs.

My parents got back from France about half an hour ago, and my dad has brought me Sonata Arctica - Successor and he bought himself Rhapsody - Symphony of Enchanted Lands vol2.

I know what Sonata sounds like, so I've popped Rhapsody into my computer.

And I'm very impressed, it rocks and is alot better than what I thought they'd be like.

Looks like I've found the 2 cd's that'll be blasting down my ears over the next week or so.
