Nocturnal Rites - Afterlife ... KILLER album! Speedy, downtuned, aggressive but melodic power metal with excellent vocals!

Vanishing Point - Tangled In Dream ... good album, melodic metal with slight prog and power elements. Good hooks in the songs, but a little inconsistent production-wise in place. Solid album, though.

That guys needs to go take Metal 101. He obviously doesn't realize metal is rooted in Classical, making Power Metal the most real metal there is. I can understand if he thinks Power Metal can be a bit overformulated but most of the bands he reviewed were some of the more unique ones. He seems to hate Classical music of any form, which I think in metal is the greatest thing you can incorporate. He thinks Rhapsody and Dimmu Borgir suck, I think they are two of the greatest bands to walk this earth because of their purely orgasmic use of symphonies.

Did anyone find it odd that he likes Blind Guardian? I can see how he likes Iced Earth because he seemed to like Thrash too, but Blind Guardian somehow gets 5 stars. Also in his world, either you suck or you kick ***, His only ratings are 1 star for totally anus, 2 for terrible, and 5 for awesome. He confuses me greatly becuase the bands he does like are all pretty good, with a few that are really good. It seems he is just an ignorant bastard who coincidentally likes good music and doesn't actually know enough about it to realize that Power Metal is just as good.

Steerpike

My drummer goes to another school and over there you find a lot of extreme metalheads. The closest any of them come to Power Metal is Bodom, but I got my drummer into all sorts of stuff. I don't want to pay $55 to see Exodus play what will probably be a 30-40 min set.

It's so frustrating for me to hear Savage Circus.

On one hand, if I'd never heard Blind Guardian at all, I'd be absolutely soiling my shorts over them - I'm not a massive fan of the new direction BG has taken, to be honest, and I absolutely love their older stuff, so any band who plays that kind of music is gonna make me jump up and down and smile...

On the other hand, since I HAVE heard BG before, I can hear entire sections on the SC album which are directly taken from BG albums, so much so that I've found that I'll sit there trying to match up the part it was stolen from rather than enjoying it for what it is.

I reallly hope the next album has more of their own identity rather than BG's identity from 1992...

HAHA!

We haven't had a set of people doing that since we first started to play in Sydney and yeah, it sucks. You have to work 3 times as hard to win them over... and sometimes, there's nothing you can do.

Oh, actually... I forgot about our gig immediately after we left the Megadeth tour in Europe. Instead of continuing on with 'Deth to Thesoloniki in Greece, we returned to Germany to repay a favour to a band called Gun Barrell who lent us some gear when we played one of the German dates with Megadeth. What we DIDN'T know was that it was being held in a junior school hall and there was a crowd of about 20 people all up... and we had all of 6 people standing there watching us (who had no idea who we were) with their arms crossed waiting for Gun Barrell to come on - turns out they were friends and relatives of the band and we were just holding up the night for them! *sigh*

(Before anyone gets the wrong idea, Gun Barrell are AWESOME guys and they do some pretty cool stuff, so I'm definitely not ragging on them!)

Yeah, so after a week of playing to 15,000+ people, playing to 6 bored people the very next night sucked a very big unwashed ***! HAHA!

I do feel bad for some of the supports Dungeon's had over the last few years. Some of the crowds we got were often pretty biased towards us and didn't want to give the openers a go. Some bands deserved it, though (some bands were pretty terrible on some bills), but others I felt really bad for. Thankfully that was more the exception than the rule...

This for me depends. In some cases, the orchestra adds so much more and makes it better, and in others the orchestra is cheesy sounding and I dont realy like it. Example of cheesy sounding orchestra: In Stratovarious' Elements Part 1. The orchestra is very cheey IMO.

As for ANATO, the lyrics may be cheesy, I have never realy looked at the lyrcis so I dont know, but the orchestra is not cheesy IMO. Maybe a tiny bit but its definatly not overboard. It adds to the music in a good way.

HAHA! No, we weren't! :p

And quite the opposite, Dave was awesome to everyone (us, his band, his crew and above all, the fans) for the entire time we were with them. Don't believe the media hype, he's actually a fairly down to earth guy when he's not being "Dave" (which is expected of him to a certain degree). And his beliefs never came into anything at all on the tour at all. He did his thing and provided you kept your thing away from him if it wasn't what he was into, everyone was cool (and we were the same - we didn't like anyone smoking in our band rooms 'cos it screwed with my voice. No one cared if they did, just do it elsewhere).

But yeah, in Greece we were treated awesome (like everywhere on the tour with Megadeth, in fact). We got picked up by a comfy air conditioned bus and shuttled to Megadeth's 5-star hotel, shuttled to the Olympic Volleyball Stadium where the gig was, had massive catering... The crowd was awesome (at least 3000 there, I believe the count was) and we talked to lots of people after the show too... the only crap thing was that we had such a short time there, we couldn't go sight seeing and we were so close to all of the cool stuff we wanted to see in Athens too. :(

Yes I am excited. We might get to end up playing Rhaposody's Dawn of Victory of school. See I am the only one at school who really likes metal other than the greats and I have this mate at school who is possible the funniest guy you could meet. And he has an awesome voice not just singing but at imatating voices. He was into a little bit of thrash etc (just the greats and some Morbid Angel and Vader etc) back in the day and really likes alot of metal and rock etc. He is often really good to give music because he will really like anything good in metal that I show him because in his words as long as the tunes are kicking he is happy. Well I showed him Rhapsody as a joke and he pissed pants laughing at how cheesy they were but true to his spirit just enjoyed the cheese (unlike other fag*ots) and said the tunes were rocking. I didn't think I had made a power convert but surley guy who enjoyed for a laugh and a good time pretending to fight dragons. Then he turned to me last night and let out the best Rhapsody impression I have ever heard! He was power metal in that moment \m/ He said we should play some for some good fun. We will dress up and rock out hahaha. (sorry if this story was pointless I was just excited that we might play some great metal!)

I certainly don't think Rocket Ride (what I've heard of it anyway) is as good Hellfire Club in terms of their new approach, but it's still a lot better than the crap being shoved down my throat my radio and TV lately.

Personally, I see it as refreshing to have a metal band with such an off-kilter sense of humor. To say that Superheroes is "not Edguy at all" is, to me, unfair. You still hear their signature sound and techniques, and they still wear their influences on their sleeves like they always have.

Wasted no, insanely tacky yes.

Steerpike
02-12-2006, 12:52 AM
True, but for the most part the 80's was bombarded with high ambition and not enough money or technology to make it happen.

Imagine for just 5 minutes what the A-Team would be like if they had CSI's budget and John Woo worthy technology.

Take a moment to picture how much further Adam Ant could have taken his music back then if he had today's synthesizers, sequencers, etc.

And, go with me on this one, imagine a world in which the 80's seasons of Space Ghost and the Superfriends had the money to hire good writers.

It's amazing to think that now, people have the tecnology to recreate that sort of thing on an extremely low budget. For $10,000 you can make a feature length movie. For around the same price, you can make a full-length studio album.

It seems though that Edguy, despite understanding this and still making a quality product, just can't please everybody. I guarantee that if they had not made the change in style that they did on Hellfire Club, everyone would be bitching that they're getting stale like Stratovarius.

But since they did make the change, other people are bitching that they didn't make Mandrake II.

No matter what you do, you're gonna piss off somebody.

Songs I know: Vain Glory Opera, Under the Moon, Land of the Miracle, King of Fools, Until we Rise Again, When a Hero Cries, Tears of a Mandrake, Scarlet Rose, Lavatory Love Machine, Super Heroes, Arrows Fly, Babylon, Fallen Angels and Heart of Twilight.

If you like your metal with a lot of balls, definitely Hellfire Club, but if you prefer the lighter side (and that's not to say this album is wimpy or anything), Mandrake.

And, go with me on this one, imagine a world in which the 80's seasons of Space Ghost and the Superfriends had the money to hire good writers.

On Under The Rising Sun I thought that Netherlife, Lost In The Light and I Am Death were done better than Resurrection. But that might just be me. Overall, it's an excellent CD.

The only downfall that I can think of is that the part in Insanity's Fall where the crowd does the "Ooooh~ Oh Oh Oooh" part isn't really loud enough. That's not Dungeon's fault though, as it's more something that gives you a great feeling from being a part of it. I doubt any band could capture something like that on record.

And now I wield my mighty sword of much replying! *swish!*

The only downfall that I can think of is that the part in Insanity's Fall where the crowd does the "Ooooh~ Oh Oh Oooh" part isn't really loud enough.

I agree! I mixed and produced the audio from that CD and you should have heard the audio tapes we got from Club Citta for that. Dreadful.

There was already tech problems all over the place with mics cutting out, etc. so we did have to fix one or two things up in the studio later to make it workable, but the worst thing was the audio that came out of the main speakers was mixed so badly, and it was so loud, that we had to turn it way down or it would have overpowered the main mix on the CD.

So that's why. :)

The only cover art I could find on amazon was the special edition, which also has cool cover art. My standard re-release cover art (http://www.moderninvasionmusic.com/Assets/ArtistList/dungeonRes.jpg) is kinda average in comparison (no offence to Tim)

When were were doing the album, we basically were told we had no budget whatsoever so I had to pull something out of my *** at the last minute. The artist we were working with really let us down so the only thing left to do was to come up with something quickly myself.

I thought it came up OK considering the time I had and what I had to work with. Believe it or not, the lava monster that's climbing out of the hole in the ground was my girlfriend kneeling on her bed and taken with a crappy digital camera. And all of the guys standing around the pit were of a member of the LORD forums! :p I tried to keep a strong link to the original cover as much as I could too, which added to the cheese of it, but had a better feel of legacy.

Having said all of that, I much prefer the LMP release cover (which they decided they had money for, after I went to so much ****ing trouble - thanx, spatulas!) that was done by ProgArt Media. The only thing that does annoy me about it is that as cool as the art is, it really has no relation to the concept of the album at all.
