I am Death(On Ressurection, not ARTP) is so good on the live album, there may be some sort of law in place aginst songs being that good...
I like Resurrection and Insanity's Fall better on the live album.
I Am Death has the best soloing though.

I'm saying this because their 80s releases are supposed to be their best and as a beginner I prefer to start from the so called classic album(s) and gradually move onto the more obscure material of a band. Ollie may like this album but it's considered Iron Maiden's worst by many.

The lineup split was a good thing.
Bruce was sick of it, the mediocre nature of No Prayer and Fear of the dark prove this, they are easily Maiden's worst efforts.
Blaze in the band gave them a kick up the arse, and they realised that it was all very well writing about fantasy, but Steve felt "By the age of thirty, there was just other stuff to write about, in life."

Sorry Lord Abortion, I'm really only judging off hearing the few songs I've heard. The only one I actually have is Sign of the Cross and I think Bruce's version on Rock In Rio totally owns Blaze, that's all I have at my disposal to judge on. Is his other stuff better? His voice seemed week and lacked the vibrato Bruce has to really make it sound good.
And I take offense when you said "your opinion sucked" cause that's an opinion itself, and just becuase you don't agree doesn't mean it sucks.

Good Iron Maiden songs to start with:

Children Of The Damned
Number Of The Beast
Hallowed Be Thy Name
Off Of Piece Of Mind:
The Trooper
Flight Of Icarus
Off Of Powerslave:
2 Minutes To Midnight
Aces High
Rime Of The Ancient Mariner
Off of Somewhere In Time:
Wasted Years
Stranger in A Strange Land
Off of Seventh Son of A Seventh Son:
Can I Play With Madness
The Evil That Men Do
The Clairvoyant
Off Of Fear Of The Dark:
Fear Of The Dark (The Rock In Rio Version Is better than the studio)
Brave New World:
Brave New World
The Wicker Man
and if you do decide to get into earlier maiden
Off of Iron Maiden:
Phantom Of The Opera
Running Free
Prowler
Killers:
Wrathchild
Murders In The Rue Morgue
Youll have to ask lord abortion about good songs off x-factor and those albums but theres a good list

No you're just going to find some way to turn it on me. There is no such thing as a "definition" really anyway, it's all about comparison in sound. Genres were made to group things together, it's all about comparison. Iron Maiden is MUCH closer to Dragonforce than they are to Arch Enemy. They both have a considerable amount of influence but I think it is painfully obvious which one is closer.

Ok, then.
1. Arch Enemy are pure crap.
2. I'll do the list then.
Power Metal
Emphasis on lead guitars often harmonising, vocals.
Clean, falsetto singing, mainly.
Bass is hardly prominent.
Lyrics are known for fantasy, war and self-empowerment, but variations occur.
Double bass drumming at a fast speed.
Melodic Death Metal
Emphasis on lead guitars often harmonising, vocals, drums.
Guttural harsh vocals.
Bass is usually noticeable.
Lyrics are not known for any real consistent theme.
Double bass drumming at a medium/fast speed.
Iron Maiden
Emphasis on lead guitars often harmonising, vocals, bass.
Clean vocals.
Bass is very noticeable.
Lyrics are not known for any real consistent theme.

Um Nikko doesn't use a double bass he thinks its un drummer like, but he has the speed of a double bass, watch the dvd "part 1 the early days" they talk aboput it in their, and also there wouldn't be so much emogasis on the bass if steve harris didn't make iron maiden what it is.

Jason, I'm not sure what you're trying to prove but to an extent you have a point. To more specific it depends on what melodic death band you have in mind. If you take early In Flames then your theory is correct. If you take At the Gates then I think the description would not be correct since they sound more like NWOBHM elements incorporated to a death fomula than growled vocals over a NWOBHM structure. If you take Arsis the NWOBHM influences are far less obvious.

My natural assumption for every person in this board is that they are respectable and takes every opinion into consideration, innocent till proven guilty I guess. This thread is one of the few places where that doesn't apply and everyone flexes their elitist muscle and acts like they are so much better than everyone else. Theres no where else on this board I have to worry about that.

Yes, you could talk about Maiden's influence to the Melodic Death genre.
So, you want to be able to ridicule my opinion, and I'm not allowed to question yours?
Come on mate, I didn't even insult you personally.
I'm confused now...your argument where you list what makes each genre what it is says that melodeath and Iron Maiden are closer than you think.
Most people put them miles apart. They are maybe 100m away from each other, and power metal is maybe 90m away.

I already put up the white flag in the Bodom thread so I guess that means I can give posting here another shot, hopefully I can make it a week or two before betting flamed like hell again.
I've got 30 dollars to Amazon, I've been contemplating on which Blind Guardian album to get. It's between A Night At the Opera and Imaginations From the Other Side. The impression that I get from reviews is that they are both really good with a lot of ups and a few downs, but NATO has less of that heavy sound with lots of solos, while IFTOS still has a lot of speed metal influence from their early days. I've only heard one song off each, Battlefield and Bright Eyes, which are supposedly not the best by any means off of either.
I've got Nightfall In Middle Earth btw, it's one of my all time favorites.

Out of curiosity (I may have asked this already), what do Bal-Sagoth fall under? They have that Rhapsody like superepic feel to them, but their vocalist isn't exactly power metal...

It's pretty thrashy compared to the others, but I like it. The Japan Live album is worth it, and the album itself has I am Death on it, and Legend of a Huma, of course. And that makes any songwriting simplicity a moot point.

Not that this has anything to do with power metal, but considering your from a well established band, what are your thoughts on music downloading?
Lord Tim
01-24-2006, 09:20 AM
OK, that's a tough one.
There's 2 schools of thought on this one.
The first school being that without downloading and MP3 trading, a lot of people here on this board never would have even heard about Dungeon or LORD at all. In a way, it's sort of like borrowing an album from someone to check a band out or getting a copy to listen to for a while. If someone really likes it, they become a fan and will end up buying your other stuff and your merch and going to gigs, etc. etc. So in that way, it's a good thing.
The flip side of that is that some people who download your stuff may never buy your albums in the end. Whether it's because they intended to and never got around to doing it or never had any intention of doing it (hey, they have the album already - why would they bother going and buying it?), the outcome is the same. Essentially, it's taking money from my pocket that would have gone towards my hard work and money I spent making the music in the first place.
People could argue that downloading doesn't really hurt an artist but it does in a few ways. A good example is that our recording budget was SEVERELY cut during the last 2 albums from our label. The reason being that they were losing money due to sales being down because of downloading.
This affected us in a few ways.
First of all, it made it DAMN hard to put out a world-class product with half of our budget gone (we managed - JUST.)
Next, the label isn't making as much money anymore so their recording and promotional budgets are cut, which not only makes it hard for the artist to record but because their promotion isn't as good, less people know about the band than they otherwise would if there was more promo, therefore less sales.
Next, because people are downloading our albums rather than buying them and then you couple that with the fact that we're not being promoted as much from our label 'cos they don't have the funds to do it, our sales are down, which means less royalties.
When you're a relatively new band in the global scene, if your label sees that your sales are low, they're less keen to inject money into you when they could be pushing their more established bands who are riding out the downloading a bit better than the new kids on the block.
So yeah, as you can see, downloading overall is giving us a huge butt-reaming. There's positives to it and I'll be the first to say I'm all for people trading MP3s of my music to give someone an idea of what we do, or even trading whole albums if the other person is likely to be a person who will go out and buy the product or support the band in a big way in some fashion, but sadly, that's more the exception than the rule.
Shattered_Future
01-24-2006, 10:05 AM
See, my theory on downloading is basically, if you want to hear the band, one or two downloaded songs won't hurt. It gives the listener a chance to hear the band, and may or may not entice them to buy the album.
Downloading whole albums I think is a bad idea, even though I do it. :(
I kind of have to do it...the cd stores suck around here, I don't have a job, and I don't have a credit card where I can order this crap from online stores. For now, I'm stuck with downloading albums.
Steerpike
01-24-2006, 10:14 AM
I do agree that downloading has its ups and downs to be sure.
Personally, I don't approve of people who download whole albums with no intention of ever buying the real thing. If I like what I hear, I promise myself to buy the albums. If I really like the albums, I start buying up the T-shirts and posters as well to chip in a little extra support.
As great as filesharing may be for the sake of exposure, it often turns into another case of "too much of a good thing."
I have to say though, I wouldn't have heard of many of the bands I listen to now if not for downloading, and I now own many of their albums.
Lord Abortion
01-24-2006, 11:57 AM

and this thread got me into alot of bands i also never would have heard (big thanks to Riva for telling me about Galloglass)

To me both them and Iced Earth are the most mediocre Power Metal there is. I think it is just becuase my personal taste doesn't really appeal to Thrash, I know a lot of other people here like them tho, and they are definately good, I just like most other Power Metal bands better.

Tap 2 fingers on something, 1 2 1 , repeat.
But galloping is made up of 2 16ths and an 8th. Unless theres what Deth showed me in The Trooper.
Triplets are the same value notes therefore not causing a galloping effect.
If i do the 1 2 1 you said, then in that case the 1 is a 16th, the 2 is a 16th and the last one is an 8th. If the 1 2 1 are for example, 8th note triplets, then theres no galloping happening.

Galloping are any 2 note values followed by one note value double that note value
Or it can be the other way around. Raining Blood has the eigth note first.

Yeah. Sorry, I just used the example with 8ths and 16ths. But yes your right.
To Deth: Many IE songs start off a galloping riff with an 8th note too. It leads to the same thing pretty much.
And then theres some galloping riffs which have an 8th note before every "gallop" Example: Dantes Inferno.

For example 8th triplets will be 3 8th notes in 1 beat, instead of 2. So in speed, its halfway between an 8th note and a 16th.

I really enjoy Axel's stuff and he was great live at Bang Your Head but man... as a songwriter, he's awesome, but as a producer and (sadly) as a guitarist he's terrible. He's got amazing speed and chops galore but absolutely NO feel at all, which is sad 'cos it really takes away from his excellent songwriting.
