That's a bit naughty of you.

Anyway, what kind of school is yours, where you get Helloween videos in the English dept?

All that ever lurked in there at my school were ancient cheapo productions of Shakespeare and Jane Austen.

And that's why nobody nicked them

I feel like debating so someone challenge me....

I don't think Iced Earth should be classified as Power Metal. 90% of the time the riffing is based in thrash. When there are leads which isn't extremely often compared to most Power Metal bands, such as Blind Guardian who's got a lead going all the time, they don't seem to be very "Power Metal esque" and remind me more of something Metallica would do. Both the riffing and lead sound A LOT more like Metallica than Dragonforce or really any other Power Metal band. As far as the vocals go I wouldn't exactly call them thrash but they seem way too low to be considered Power Metal, besides the occasional falsetto scream. Like Metallica they use a lot of acoustic interludes/intros and harmonizing, and have the occasional shred solo. I really think they should be classified as a Melodic Thrash Metal band much moreso than a Power Metal band. The only thing I could really see making them Power Metal would be the lyrics.

Somebody prove me wrong I'm bored.

I don't feel like debating, but listen to Exodus or Dark Angel and tell me Iced Earth sound only like thrash. It's a mixture of the two genres, and I myself would put them closer to the power metal side of things.

And the vocals, well, listen to Sabaton.

I don't think Iced Earth should be classified as Power Metal. 90% of the time the riffing is based in thrash.

The riff emphasis is a part of Iced Earth's sound more as an influence from Kiss and AC/DC than Megadeth or Metallica.

Notice also that Running Wild and Sabaton have riffs reminiscent of speed/thrash metal, but remain power metal.

When there are leads which isn't extremely often compared to most Power Metal bands, such as Blind Guardian who's got a lead going all the time, they don't seem to be very "Power Metal esque" and remind me more of something Metallica would do.

Not every song needs a solo. Jon Schaffer likes to experiment with a variety of song styles.

Also, Metallica have confined themselves to the pentatonic their whole careers, while Iced Earth never met a scale they didn't like.

Both the riffing and lead sound A LOT more like Metallica than Dragonforce or really any other Power Metal band.

Once more I reference Sabaton and Running Wild.

For fun, let's also throw in Nightwish and Tarot.

As far as the vocals go I wouldn't exactly call them thrash but they seem way too low to be considered Power Metal, besides the occasional falsetto scream.

Matt Barlow is a bass/baritone, true. But power metal does not require its singers to be exclusively tenors.

Also, in the vocals department, power metal requires a much, much higher degree of musicianship than thrash does. The vocalist carries much more weight in a power metal band, whereas most thrash bands prefer to avoid having any other member distract from the guitarists that often.

Like Metallica they use a lot of acoustic interludes/intros and harmonizing, and have the occasional shred solo.

Metallica does not have a monopoly on that. That's an 80's thing. Listen to Dokken for example.

Lots of bands cross genres, and just becasue they don't sound like another band in a genre doesn't mean they shouldn't be classified in that way. Sometimes certain songs could slide into other genres as well.

A lot of the bands I listen to could be considered power or prog... Angra, Labyrinth, etc..

I've seen A7X classified as power metal, maybe some stuff on City of Evil?

Slayer, Exodus (from what I've heard), Megadeth not nearly to the extent of Metallica, Testament also not to the extent of Metallica.

I'd prefer not to argue with you becuase you always seem to have loads of backup on everything and I respect you as a member of this board but I think I have a valid point here. I would say thrash is an evolution of punk brough into metal. In it's purest form it has basic powerchord riffs often with gallops or fast 16th note palm mutes, a fast punklike drum beat, and usually pretty rugged sounding vocals. Obviously many thrash bands decided to expand their horizons, Metallica going from the raw Kill Em All to a more melodic version of thrash in Master of Puppets and And Justice For All. Megadeth also took elements of melody into their music, such as the melodic intro to Good Mourning Black Friday or the arabian sounding acoustic interlude in Holy Wars. Like Iced Earth it is a combo of that original raw thrash sound combined with more melodic elements from non metal music and also bands who have fused those elements into metal before, namely Iron Maiden.

Steerpike

Yes and no.

Thrash bands and also some speed metal bands combined many of the key elements of metal with the visceral approach that punk had.

I do 100% agree with that statement, I just think you overlook the chugging riffs. You are correct tho their leads are reminiscent of speed metal and their attitude nothing but Power Metal. The riffs I think are just too important to be left out of the genre classification, and they aren't speed metal enough to really call them that. Comparing them to Bodom (instrumentally) is like two completely different bands, and Bodom (Hatebreeder era at least) is pretty much a pure combination of speed and power.

My guess is some crazed employee thought it would be cool. The downside tho is he wasn't smart enough to know its name, it's labeled at Progressive Metal. Either way I thought that was really cool, I picked up Touched By The Crimson King and Tyranny of Souls.

I can only find power metal if I look really hard in the only music store in town with any variety. And it's under ROCK/POP A-Z.

Tyranny isn't really PM.
But a great album.
and you get to shout "BRUCE BRUCE BRUCE BRUCE!" at Your CD player, always a good thing, I find

The big HMV on Yonge st. here has a surprisingly large amount of Power Metal for such a large store.

It wasn't actually under teh Power Metal section, it was with all the other metal scattered about Pop/Rock A-Z. It's got it's Power Metal influence but seems to be mostly Speed Metal. Roy Z can shred like a madman though.

I haven't listened to it with undivided attention yet so I wouldn't know.

On the other hand though, most say self titled Demons & Wizards is better but I actually prefer Crimson King.

In general I'm not a Jon Schaffer fan but I happen to love Hansi Kursch so I figured it was worth a shot. On the first album I think Blood On My Hands is one of the best songs ever despite its simpleness, but the rest are all so mediocre cuase Schaffer wrote 1 riff and recorded it 50 times on Iced Earth songs and now for Demons & Wizards.

It's one of the rules ITT.

1. play nice
2. don't argue with Steerpike, me or Jason.
3. Don't insult Jon Schaffer, Hansi kursch, or Matt Barlow
4. no spitting or heavy petting
5. don't run with morningstars

I don't think your elitist rules really overrule the official board rules. I can say what I want about Jon Schaffer and you can say what you want about Alexi Laiho or Jari Maenpaa, it's all fair.

Guys i am defiantly going to post a write-up in here (not on the forums, actually in this thread i don't want 2 hours of my time to be wasted on 'lol dese sound gd, [email]') of Ark Storm, Richard Andersons stuff and then some of the PM from my area. You guys definatly need to here it.

Tagging on from rule 8 should be some kind of Nightwish fanboy extension, and as Shattered fills that gap, this thread is cloosssseeed to all other Nightwish fanboys. We apologise for any inconvinence caused.
