That's a Kubicki Factor bass, the same kind as Stu Hamm uses (or used? Not sure if he still does). Very expensive!

Nice bass but odd - the strings feed in from the bridge, which is where you tune it from, and the headstock is sorta like how the bridge is where they just hook in the end of the strings there.

What's cool though is there's a little lever on there you can flip and the head becomes an extension of the fretboard - it gives you 2 more frets past the nut, which is awesome! Instant drop-D tuning whenever you want it! :)

Hey guys, I don't post here much (or I guess in mx altogether) but I'm also a fan of power metal and have recently purchased Helloween's latest effort Keeper of the Seven Keys: The Legacy and to say the least I'm really pleased.

There's somewhat of a backstory regarding the album title and the band's future in general (lets just say their last album was deservedly inconsequential to the power metal scene) but Helloween have rebounded from their last release and managed to breathe some life in their music with The Legacy. This album, if anything, is at least adventurous and inspired effort admist a rather stale sub-genre--its evident that these guys are intent on pushing the boundries of their music while maintaining the catchy hooks and the epic stylings that define power metal.

So have any of you guys heard the new album? I've only given a cursory listen so far so I can't judge its worth yet, but from what I can tell so far it has great potential.

Oh and btw I already know many power metal fans are fawning over a certain band (that will go unnamed:)) that has released a demo that just so happens to feature the same chord progressions, song style, and melodies that they recycled repeatedly since their inception as a musical outfit...so instead tell me what you guys think of this new album:p

The Legacy

I've heard 3 songs off this album which sounded too poppy to me. In fact I dont see any progress. If the whole album sounds like these songs then I get the impression we have a Rabbit Dont Come Easy pt II. I dont like the poppy direction euro power metal has taken (helloween, stratovarius, edguy). Thank god we had a superior euro power release last year: Angra - Temple of Shadows!

Yeah, I know the feeling. Anyway, I think you'll like Grave Digger (Rheingold album) so just keep them in mind.

As for Sabaton I was surprised to find out that they've already started recording a new album which will be released in spring! I was also slightly disappointed by the fact that I find Fist for Fight (their demo collection) better than Primo Victoria. They're still high quality but they have the potential for even better things!

Steerpike

They're definately an act to watch out for in the future. They're one of the few power metal bands since Manowar to successfully integrate a truly Wagnerian element to their music.

And I only just spotted your post on the previous page. Speak not ill of Edguy, infidel! You really need to give them credit. When most bands attempt such a dramatic shift in their sound, it sucks. But Edguy managed to pull it off very successfully. There isn't one bad song on Hellfire Club. And this is even more impressive considering how young they all are.

I don't think Hellfire club sounds perticularly Poppy as such...

ElectricalStorm
11-29-2005, 04:58 PM
I've heard 3 songs off this album which sounded too poppy to me. In fact I dont see any progress. If the whole album sounds like these songs then I get the impression we have a Rabbit Dont Come Easy pt II. I dont like the poppy direction euro power metal has taken (helloween, stratovarius, edguy). Thank god we had a superior euro power release last year: Angra - Temple of Shadows!

Thanks for replying. I do think its premature to judge the album on 3 tracks though (esp since its a double album with 13 tracks that make up almost 80 minutes of music).

Having said that yes the poppy sound of Rabbit Don't Come Easy does find its way into this cd--some tracks more than others, but there's just a whole lot more depth this time around. That simple catchy Happy Helloween sound isn't the only thing these guys are offering up on this new disc.

I know Mrs. God is probably the most distributed and easily acquirable song from this album and it does seem to have Rabbit part. 2 written all over it, but its a misleading track--it certainly does not capture the essence of the new album.

I just heard the album about a week ago. I'm mixed on my opinion of it. There were a few tracks I quite enjoyed. However a good number of them were pretty sub-par to me as well. The album as a whole just didn't do it for me. The select tracks I liked I'll listen to again, but I'll never listen to the whole album straight through again.

Batman suit story?

Apocalyptic Raids
12-03-2005, 09:15 AM
OK, there's been quite a few memorable (or not, as it were) occasions where I've been totally shattered but one that comes to mind is one time back when I was living in Broken Hill I went to a fancy dress party dressed as Batman! HAHA!

I'd hired this lame-as Batman suit from a fancy dress place and bought 2 bottles of Beam (Yummy Beam's Choice green label and my fav' Beam's Rye yellow label) and proceeded to drink said bottles, starting with the Rye.

Well, damn near the end of the bottle of Rye I was pretty ****ed... The usual **** happened - I fell over a lot (once in the urinal, which was sad for me ), I headbanged in inappropriate places and at innapropriate times and I decided I needed to show everyone I could sing metal vocals over the top of lame pop songs that were being pumped over the PA! HAHA! You'd think I'd stop there, right?

About half-way through the bottle of Choice I finally figured I needed some air so I went outside and promptly barfed all over my Bat boots! That's when my Bat signal went off and I got the immediate compulsion to fight crime... or at least walk home and go to bed! HAHA!

So off I wandered - leaving half a bottle of Choice behind, mind you (ARRGH!) - and most importantly, my Batman mask, so it was just me wearing a Batman suit with no mask. Somehow I knew this and I knew it'd be a bad idea to walk down any main streets dressed as Batman if people knew who I was, so I stuck to all of the dark back streets... sorta....

I wandered off with all of the best intentions for about 2 blocks when I thought "**** this! This is taking too long!" and I'd head for a main road which was quicker... then like 5 metres before I turned into it I'd get a moment of lucidity and go "****!! Idiot! You're dressed as Batman with no mask! Turn back! TURN BACK!!!" HAHA! I did that like 3 or 4 times before my "smart" voice was just too drunk or too tired to stop me from making a dick of myself... So into the main street I wander...

HAHA! I've never had so many people calling out **** or beeping car horns at me in my life and I'm thinking "what's their ****in' problem!", totally forgetting I'm dressed as Batman! HAHA!

I somehow made it home and crashed out, then when I woke up the next day, I'd totally forgotten about the party the night before... until I looked down and realised I was dressed as Batman! HAHA! "WHAT. THE. ****. !!!! I'm Batman?!!!!" HAHA! I think it took about 5 minutes before it really dawned on me it was a hired costume for a party and I wasn't actually Batman! Totally spun out! HAHA!

Then I spent the rest of the day trying to find my Bat mask and cleaning the barf off my Bat suit - all toally hungover and dry-reaching all day - before I had to return the suit that afternoon...

Killer party! HAHA!
Sorry Tim

We actually don't own it - that's the LMP release and it's not even supposed to be in this country because of the way the territories are organised, but due to the parallel importing laws, they still end up in shops here. (which is good for you guys, of course).

BTW, that tab is wrong - both guitars are playing octaves in a minor 3rd harmony. EG:

-------------------------------------------
-------------------------------------------
-7776xx7776xx7~6x-1010109xx1010109xx10~9~5-
-------------------------------------------
-5554xx5554xx5~4x-8 8 8 7xx8 8 8 7xx8 ~7~3-
-------------------------------------------

x=string mute (ie: lift your fingers off of the strings to deaden them and pick them to get a muted sound, rather than a palm mute)

~= slur (so 7~6 means play from 7th and slide down to 6th still sounding the note)

The 2nd guitar plays a diatonic minor 3rd harmony, ie: 3 scale degrees up.

And tuning is E flat (every string tuned a semitone lower)

Steerpike
12-10-2005, 02:38 PM
Not that that narrows it down too much, but yes. Gamma Ray was the second band of Kai Hansen.

Ralf Scheepers was Gamma Ray's original lead singer and has a very Halford-esque voice. Kai let him leave the band to audition for Judas Priest when Rob left, but Ripper got the job instead.

Rather than going back to Gamma Ray, Ralf decided to form his own band since he had been having communication and transportation troubles in his last months with Gamma Ray anyway. So he formed Primal Fear, and has been doing pretty good for himself ever since.

Sounds like you had an awesome night Jon. Insanity's Fall was one of the highlights for me as well. The oooOOOooohhh bit is awesome live. Good to see you got a shirt as well. :p

Tim, I hope you had a blast with it being the final Dungeon gig and all. Now on with LORD! :D

Speaking of Edguy, one month until Rocket Ride is out!

I almost bought Hellfire Club a few days ago, but didn't because I know jack **** about it.

Is it a quality album?

Hellfire club is great. One of my favorite PM albums. Very high quality I'd say, so go get it.

Dungeon are weird. I don't see what is so great about them, I only have the Rise To Power album though.

At some points I find them too old school for my liking but still well played old school. I like the way the gradually grow on me.

I'm listening to some Dungeon samples now. Why didn't anybody tell me that they're amazing?!

haha, the amount of Dungeon converstation in here should have put you into thoughts :p

I'm horrible with people in bands...no idea who's in a lot of them, unless I listen to it for an obscenely long amount of time.

Tell me about it :upset:

Not even Steerpike has heard Ark Storm? Good god.

neoclassical power metal? Sounds like something I would check out :thumb:

Hmm... maybe we should do a LORD / Dungeon thread here or something so we don't keep clogging up this power metal thread? I'm starting to feel a little embarassed about it all!

I dont mind it at all. It's an honor to have a real band member liven up this thread!

Gmac and Apocalyptic Raids, did you meet Tim in person at the live show?!

Lord Tim
12-11-2005, 02:18 PM
I met Gmac in Brisbane... did I meet Apocalyptic Raids??

And just to keep this thread a little less "me" related ( :p ) I also whole heartedly recommend Hellfire Club! Best Edguy album IMO and if you like your metal with balls, check out the bonus track which is a version Mysteria with Mille Petrozza from Kreator doing guest vocals - KILLER!

As I've said before, there is not one bad song on Hellfire Club. I definately have to get my hands on the Superheroes EP and Rocket Ride.

"Whooooooooooooaoaoaoaoaoa...you oughta know..."
very underrated SWTWC track

I found Superheroes a little soft compared to Hellfire Club which sort of took me by surprise, 'cos I was expecting something along the same lines, but I can see where they're going with it - they're just starting to really break into the mainstream and want to eat well! HAHA!

I know the guys and they work damn hard on what they do and they don't get as much back as you'd expect, so cheers to them for trying to make a good living! :)

Could someone sum up Edguy for me? I can't really tell what they're like by what's posted here.

Their early stuff was very symphonic and bombastic, but on Hellfire Club they decided to change direction out of concern of growing stale. They opted for a more stripped-down Iron Maiden/Judas Priest styled classic metal approach.

They wear their influences on their sleeves, but still maintain their own unique sound with very edgy, ***-kicking attitude.

Lord Tim
12-11-2005, 09:09 PM
And they have a real cracked sense of humour too, which sometimes finds its way into some of the songs, which is really refreshing - I hate bands that take themselves too seriously all the time.

Their live show is fantastic - Tobi is an excellent frontman, really active and his vocals are spot on, much like the harmony backing vocals... totally incredible. Some bands cheat and use backing tapes for their vocals, but not these guys, it's all real.

Big fan here! I hope we do the next tour with them again when they come back next year! :)

That would be awsome.
I should really get into Edguy, I've heard a few songs.

Should I make a Dungeon/LORD thread?

I think so :thumb:

"Super Awesome Epic Orchestrated Symphonic Power Metal". :naughty:

Does LORD sound anything like Dungeon? If so, I gotta pick up some of their albums in the near future...

I think it is supposed to be a slightly different direction than Dungeon, but I haven't heard it yet. Tim can answer this one :p

Wasn't Rhaposdy calling themselves "Hollywood Metal" at one stage? :p

The first LORD album sounds more like the more progressive moments on One Step Beyond and is a little more introspective. The next lot will sound exactly like Dungeon when it's out. :)

Check out www.lord.net.au for samples of the first album. :)

SoEL is awesome, i love the orchestral elements of it. that album made me start listening to a bit of classical music again.

anyway, after christmas, when i have money, i'm going to buy:
Edguy - Hellfire Club
Blind Guardian - Nightfall Over Middle-Earth
DragonForce - Inhuman Rampage
Iced Earth - a lot of albums.

i already have all these on my computer, but i want real copies, and if i ask my parents to get them they'll just get me something mainstream instead :(
