Was just listening to some Therion and was wondering if this is powermetal. It has some of the elements but not all. The vocals could go for powermetal nowadays and the guitarwork could be powermetal. The themes they use for the lyrics too but still there (what I know) not called a powermetal band.

Do you guys consider Nevermore Power Metal?
Most do. They're kind of like Iced Earth, with a fine line between power and thrash. But yeah, they're most commonly put in with power metal.

Some albums with front-to-back good songs:
Blind Guardian - Nightfall in Middle-Earth
Iced Earth - Night of the Stormrider, Something Wicked this way Comes, Horror Show
Angra - Rebirth
Edguy - Hellfire Club
Demons & Wizards - S/T, Touched by the Crimson King *Both albums are some of the best that power metal has to offer, in my opinion.
There's just a few to get you started, but there's a lot more that fall into this list.

Thee thanks thou for gratifying and feels quite proud as the last few months that have passed thee has yield to much metal as Death, Power and other works of the Metallum light grows within. Methinks the Heart Collector and River Dragon of Nevermore are noble and fine pleasantries to ones ears so Communic shall be embraced soon once High Warlock Dom rests his tried mind though the night for I and the day for thou. Thee feelself himself, becoming a more knowlegble Warlock of Metallum at each passing hour but worries that life is too short to ever discover all of Metallumes secrets.
I'd watch that.

Thee disagrees with thou and feels obliged to take this up with the council. As the Maiden of Iron is not truly belong in Spells of Power book but as it closer to nothing else and can be seen as one of the great powers in Arcane histroy it shall fit in the power book. Although not as sound as one should like but never the less nay other book will be closer enough to suit it.
If rocks and head are not the Black Spells of the Metallum then thee shall take the second spells made obvious by the use of the old lanaguage word "OR" and use the spells of Death Metallum to bring sound for sound but to vision all so.
(Feels like Jason that time he wrote that Chariot story what a giggle)
From now on I am High Warlock Dom of the Council of Power Metallum Aracana
Stoic is Blind Guardian of the Council of Power Metallum Arcana
Steerpike is Eternal Lord of the Sea, Shadow and the Council of Power Metallum Aracana

You get the idea. If you want to get really over the top, talk like a mix of a silent film villain and Shakespeare.

Yes, one of our derogatory terms for black people is sooties, so there's commonality there. Every culture likes putting others down - in China they call Westerners a word that means cattle, because they maintain that we smell like them. Don't expect these terms will ever stop completely :upset:

I like Abba; their songs are well written and have good structure - and most have an indescribable "sing along" quality. I'd love to hear some "heavied-up" Abba! Any chance of an upload or two?
Sure, sure! I've been literally obsessed with Abba and there's no one to share my love with  Their songs stick to your head to the point of madness and do really good power metal covers.

Truth. The fact that the album is so experimental, with loads of acoustic and folky parts means its abit of a hard nut to crack, but i love it even more for that. Faverouite songs are 'The Shadow Hunter' and 'Waiting Silence.'

I listened to a couple songs from City of Evil to see what the hell everyone was talking about, and I have to agree. While the music seems to be inspired by power metal, it still has too much of a visceral punk sound to really be classed among real power metal bands.
I'd say Avenged Sevenfold's new direction is more of a speed metal revival approach, personally.

and speaking of plain metal bands out there, I strongly believe that we already have a very tied and high quality modern underground scene.

Gigantour rules.
Damn you...Therion is awesome.
Gigantour was in-freakin-credible. I took your advice and made a mad rush to the front after Kill Dry Logic finished, only to find out that you needed pit tickets to get to the front
Anyway, Symphony owned. Minus the random jokes in between the songs, they sound exactly like they do on their albums. As for their act on stage, I was going completely insane during their set and didn't notice too much of what they were doing :p Their 20 minute set felt like five. I can't wait to see them next time they come back here.
Nevermore was next, and they were good, the only complaint I had about their performance was that you couldn't hear Warrel too well. I was very happy when they played Born, Enemies of Reality, and Final Product. Final Product was put in as kind of an afterthought...the band was just about to walk off stage, and then they came running back and said "whoa! we almost forgot a song!". I guess it's hard to do as well as they could have since they were put into a tiny time slot, and their equipement was kind of just shoved to the front. I'm sure they're gonna be awesome when they do their tour with Opeth
Life of Agony...umm....reminded me of kernals in a popcorn machine. They were all over the place, I can't believe the energy those guys have. I haven't heard much by them, but from what another guy was saying, their performance was much different from their albums.
Fear Factory wasn't bad at all, they aren't my favourite band, but I really enjoyed their set. By that time people actually started showing up, and people were really getting into it. Right at the end of their set, they started playing Walk - the crowd noticed it and went mad cheering and headbanging - and they said some stuff about Dimebag as a tribute.
They actually took time setting up for the first headliner, which was Dream Theatre. They had to get seven guys to push out Portnoy's massive drum set, complete with three bass drums and a gong. Petrucci came on soloing, and they proceeded to put on a awesome performance. They went off stage...and I noticed that Portnoy was wearing a bath robe. After had left, the crowd kept yelling for Dream Theater to come back on. They did Pull Me Under as an encore :D
Then, after the longest set up time during the show, the lights went off, and Dave Mustaine walked on stage. They started with Blackmail the Universe, and had an awesome set that included Sweating Bullets, Tornado of Souls, and Hangar 18. They put on a wicked show, with ten foot flames and other pyrotechnics. The whole band was really into it, especially Dave, who looked like he put everything he had into the performance. The crowd was going wild through the whole two hour set, and in the middle of it a guy gave Dave a Canadian flag with Dave Mustaine for Prime Minister written across it. Heh...he'd be much better than the goons we have in Parliament now. During their last song, Portnoy snuck on and took over the drum set. Dave pulled him up to the front, introduced him to the crowd as DT's drummer and a good friend and thanked him, the rest of DT, and Symphony for a great show. After the encore (Holy Wars!), the show ended, and everyone left watching the fireworks show that had started right by the Molson Ampitheatre. Perfect way to end a great night :D

Yeah, Symphony X only played for 20 minutes, and Nevermore got the same amount of time...that was very disappointing. I agree, it bites that they got so pushed to the side, it seemed all the bands who were there were opening acts for Dream Theater and Megadeth. Many of the people who came to the show didn't even get to see the first few bands, a lot of people didn't even really start arriving until Fear Factory came on stage. But whatever, I'm still glad I got to see them. It was in Canada by the way, note the part about the Canadian flag being given to Mustaine :p. The tour went through North America though.

If by "sparkle" you mean it doesn't have constant double pedalling drumbeats at 180+bpm then I agree; I have always preferred my metal at medium pace anyway, and there are more variety of speed on RN - their older numbers, like Wolf and Raven for example are just too frenetic for my taste; I always think the power and impact of metal gets diminished when the bpm rate rises above a certain amount, I also really enjoy the quirky 6/8 time in The Boy Who Wanted To Be A Real Puppet, and the ballad-like Shamandalie. I just don't like my metal to sound like a machine gun. Sonata are still good, and I enjoy some of their earlier output, but I think that RN shows a maturity not present in their earlier albums, and is my unshakeable favourite.
Shattered_Future
09-05-2005, 11:36 AM
Nooooo...I mean, it's almost as if they exhausted all their creative efforts on the earlier albums, and just threw this one together last minute...it doesn't have those jaw-dropping riffs found on the earlier albums.
Tony sounds a lot better on RN, though...I will admit that.

Just listened to the Rhapsody album Neurotoxin posted. Well this is some of the purest forms of PM I've ever heard. It realy is 'fantasy' metal. The vocals are amazing, especially on Symphony of the enchanted lands. But what I really liked was the use of violin in most songs. It gave it a certain high fantasy feel to the whole album, though it is a bit overused in some songs.
