Dude you really don't know your ska well enough to be posting stuff like that if that's truly what you think. The variety of ska bands for what i interpretted to be a guide for someone new to ska was fairly limited, though it would set them off on their way to learning about other bands fairly quickly.
What i'm concerned with here is the flippant dismissal of choking victim. I'm not disputing the fact that a lot of choking vicim songs are appallingly recorded and i respect your right to an opinion, but i think you've missed something when listening to them, perhaps not heard enough of the right songs. I get the impression that you have the wrong approach to music, most of the bands you mentioned have a lot of well polished material, which i think is why you've perhaps missed the talent behind choking victim, there's a mentality there only be understood fully by listening to the message they're trying to get accross, it's a lot easier if you've been through that kind of pain yourself, though i'll let that can that go as it is maybe too punk for you to understand.
Stop taking your cues from 21 dead monkeys!! it's not on at all! it is just plain stealing!!! and anyway there are better ska resources on the net than a badly drawn nn2s rip off!
no disrespect to 21 dead monkeys, i was just trying to make a point.
There's something wrong with pretty much everything you posted so i don't have time to go through it all,but i think it's safe to say that you're a moron and your opinion on music will only ever be valued by morons until you learn some sense! ska isn't about horns and trumpets, it's a spirit of music and until you understand that you'll never learn anything.
Good luck acquiring some taste and try not to make an arse out of yourself on the internet again until then.

stuff
I said they may have written the best song ever. The reason why I dismiss most of their songs is because Crack Rock Steady is well recorded, the singing isn't abysmal and it's actually a ska song.
I don't know much about Choking Victim other than they did a lot of crack and squatted. If I could understand what they were singing on most of their tracks, I might know a little more. If recording quality kept me from listening to bands I wouldn't listen to Operation Ivy or Chris Murray.
Stop taking your cues from 21 dead monkeys!! it's not on at all! it is just plain stealing!!! and anyway there are better ska resources on the net than a badly drawn nn2s rip off!
I don't take any cues from 21DM. I love her art and she recommends good bands, but in most cases they aren't new to me.

What is this ska spirit you talk about? Please educate me to how Choking Victim has anything to do with the Ska spirit. How are stealing and smoking crack and suicided relate to that unified spirit that originated in Jamaica a half century ago?

So I saw the Planet Smashers last week and got to talk to Matt their guitar player/singer. He's a really cool guy and he was out selling t-shirts before and after the show. Really down to earth and cool and their peformance was great.
Next year the school radio station is expected to have a ton of money (the music director shot out $30K, but I doubt that much) and we're hoping to put on a concert series of we can find a sponser. Planet Smashers are definitly a band we're thinking of booking.

Choking Victim is punk/ska. Not ska/punk(in my opinion). They sing about topics associated with the punk genre and sound the part. They dont really hold the "mentality" of ska. They hold more of a "mentality" of punk. Its not always fair to label, but you cant get your knickers in a twist just because someone isnt on the same level as yours on a particular band. As a casual listener of Choking Victim, I think they are okay. But it is unfair to not allow someone to have bias, even if it is in a guide. People can usually decipher their own idea of the band even if he doesnt like them. :chug:

According to The Aquabats official site. They will be touring mostly in the west (sucks for people like me in the east). Though they did say that, that is not the entire list of shows so hopefully they will come towards the east. I only remember them coming to florida once since I have been listening to their music.

Nah I didn't go to Gogol on Friday! I went to see them last week at Portsmouth - http://scuffedculture.skascene.org/gogol%20bordello%20wedge.htm - I had a ticket for London but my friend couldn't come with me cus it was sold out on the day, and I just wasn't in the mood for a packed out Astoria alone, so I sold my ticket outside. Did you go? If so, how was it?
I wanted to go to Bouncing Souls, but my mate's putting on the Suicide Bid show on the same day (their first ever show) & he kind of made me promise I would go. plus it's cheaper and more bands are playing including some mates so I should go really :upset: I might go to Against Me!, my mate said she had a spare free ticket but I haven't heard from her in a while so we'll see..... When/where is Reverend Horton Heat?
Catchthe22 - yeah Suicide Machines are playing the town by me as well, at this little venue with like 200 capacity, in July. It's gonna get TOO hot and sweaty, I mean when Streetlight Manifesto played there it was like April and it still got so hot their drummer nearly had an asthma attack. So this will be interesting. & I think Captain Everything! are playing too so we're all gonna die.

Gogol Bordello were great despite the fact they didn't play my favourite songs and I really don't like the Astoria. The best bit was when the lead singer took the big drum from the dancers/percussionists, put it on top of the crowd, then surfed on it.
Reverend Horton Heat's the 14th April at the Mean Fiddler. I'm not sure whether I'll go or not as it clashes with the Grabass Charlestons.

Gogol is just a surname I think. The only vaguely famous person with that name is some Russian realist writer from the 19th century. A Bordello is a brothel.

In any case, they make music that is like a quicker jump with joey. Really competent musicians playing uptempo ska. A group of great singers who like gang vocals. The band sounds like they would be crazy fun to see. The tempo is just perfect for real skanking. Think the toasters d.l.t.b.g.y.d. only the horns are more of the background music, not the primary melody.
Hard to describe, so listen:

I know that no one here is a big fan of Mustard Plug, but I thought this was kind of neat. I found a video of them performing at my towns "street fair" because it's where they grew up. They play it every other year or so, and this video is from 2002. I remember when this performance happened, and even remember where I was and who I was with. I was just starting to get into ska, and I really wanted to be in the crowd, but since I was only in 7th grade, I couldn't be separated from my brother. It's pretty cool to see them playing right in the middle of my neighborhood though.

Cus we just had a bunch of people come over from Marquette and live with us, it's insane all the clothes they owned said Marquette on them, we haven't even bought our uni's hoodies  But yeah, they were crazy about Marquette, sounds like a decent place...They were living here for about 5 months, went back last week, though, it was sad :upset:

I like The Opporunity. It is a slower ska song for the album. The Party Song i think is decent but not anything great. Definitly the most pop influenced song on the album.

I found this track lying around on my computer, a song that I had finished for the album but I was kinda putting to the side 'cause I wasn't sure how to **** with it... anyway, I found the file yesterday and decided to record on top of it. There was no click track so the tempos were a little weird, and also I couldn't make beats for it. After the demo sounded WAY too out of time, I decided to re-record it with a ukelele covering the main guitar part. The drums on this are a laundry bin, a set of keys and a bag of pasta being smashed against a box of Couscous.

-Streetlight Manifesto and RBF concert... If I were you I would listen to their stuff(SM only has 1 album) as much as you can before the concert because the best songs at concerts are the ones you know. Unless you are a huge fan and then the new songs are the best hopefully. Be ready to dance for 3 hours and be blown away by how much fun it is. Ska concerts usually will bring a wide variety of people, especially with Streetlight as one of the bands.
-Being in a ska band doesnt mean you do anything special on stage really. If your music is happy you can be goofy with your guitar strumming. If your music is more punkish you can throw in your hardcore/metal moves. Usually just fit in with your music but either way it comes down to the songs and how you approach the crowd with your chatting. Here is a video of Reel Big Fish playing The Fire on a show. Aaron Barrett is a top notch guitar player for the 3rd wave. He has a good style. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UYVp9w4bzl0

Fishbone – They sometimes play ska. Usually they play so many genres that you can’t define what they are. Very talented and diverse. They've drifted from ska since their earlier stuff into more experimental and varied stuff, but its all very good. Hey PaintJessGreen, I reckon their new album ain't all that bad. I mean, Cheer Up! was just dire, things could only get better. It's reminiscent of older stuff in places. If anyone near me had chanted Beer at any point during the show, I would've punched them. Hard.

I'm sure you know that Farse has broken up... If you go to their website at http://www.farse.co.uk/ you can download about half of the music in their music section (include Hopskotch)...
I saw Streetlight manifesto last night, hollly ****. amazing. i remember thinking, they sound exactly the same as recorded, maybe even better, which is guess is rare.
and Reel big Fish needs to relize no one likes their new album, and should stop playing it. Everytime they played a new song, everyone just started chanting BEER. it was great.
Streetlight is a live band which means they either sound the same or better live than on cd... Its hard for me to believe that RBF needs to realize that nobody likes their new album cause it hadn't been released yet... Even so it just them playing their old songs live, with a few exceptions... I'd like to go off and rant about why i'm dissapointed in what you said about RBF but i'll save it for another day or just not say anything...
I saw the same show (i think) with Transition, WWB, Streetlight, RBF, and MxPx... Heres how it went down for me, not that you care...
This show show ties for the best show i've ever been too... The bands didn't follow the schedual and played at different times than the sign said, but it was for the best... My night went as followed...
Before the show while i was waiting in line i met Aaron Barrett which was really cool...
When i got inside i met Aaron Abraham who is one of the coolest people i've met...
WWB was supposed to open (which i didn't understand) but Transition ended up opening... I didn't really like them but one of my old friends from the last school i went to, was touring with them and played guitar for them on the last song... Transition played for 30 long boring minutes...
WWB come on next and things got crazy... The split the club in half (i think its called the wall of death but i'm not sure), everyone that came for a ska show was on one side and everyone that came for a punk show was on the other side and there was a gap in the middle... When the started their next song both sides just ran into each other and it was sweet... WWB played for 30 minutes (although the second band was supposed to play 40)...
Streetlight came up after WWB and played like 3 long songs... I knew 1 of them (they tied two songs together into one song) and had never heard the other two... It wasn't that crazy cause everyone was singing along instead of dancing/ moshing and i was honestly a little dissapointed... Streetlight played for 30 minutes (the third band had 45 minutes to play but Streetlight didn't use all all 45)...
Reel Big Fish played next and were the obvious favorite of everyone... I don't think i've ever had as good of a time at a concert than when RBF were playing... My friend and I tore the place up with some people... People were skanking everywhere and well i can't really explain how amazing it was... The only problem was that everyone was drenched with sweat after like the first song so it got slippery but it was still amazing... Several people passed out/ fainted after RBF played which sorta scary but they got better fast... RBF instead of playing 1 hr played for 2 hrs... It was crazy...
MxPx played last and weren't that good... About half of the people left after RBF so it was sorta empty... My friend and I had some fun moshing around when you couldn't really mosh to the songs... The only reason why i said this show tied for the best ever is cause MxPx was a huge let down... MxPx only played for like an hour or so, but they took requests and played some of their older better stuff...
After the first two MxPx songs my friend left and i had some fun with some people i met there... I also chilled with Delano Bonner for a song which was pretty cool...

The Boom err released their new album....Err I think on the 3rd of July. I remember I was at a Babyboom show on the 2nd July and they were pre-selling them. Hey I did an interview with Barney the other day, I might get round to uploading some mp3s of that onto here. the-UK-ska-scene
07-22-2006, 05:39 PM
I think I may prefer the new album. Nah maybe I'm just being crazy. It's good though!
Babyboom is an acoustic side project of Sonic Boom Six, with exactly the same members. They've been covering Northern Skies as part of their set lately. I love Babyboom, I prefer them over Sonic Boom Six (but big Boom are awesome too!).
"Babyboom started… obviously it started as a side project of Sonic Boom Six. It started because Ben and Laila wanted to do some acoustic sets, and this is when Ben still played the saxophone but Ben’s a songwriter, and Ben wrote a few songs he wanted him and Laila to go do some acoustic sets at pubs and bars etc."
"Laila thought of the name Babyboom so it seemed appropriate to distinguish between acoustic Sonic Boom Six and electric Sonic Boom Six."
-ugly unedited interview, but yeah that's what Babyboom basically is in Barney's own words.
Here's their stuff for your listening pleasure, although you should really buy it. Please.

I just saw the Streetlight/WWB/RBF/MXPX show, and the most memorable set to me was Reel Big Fish.I love their energy, you can see it go straight into the crowd when they start.I don't think they played very many new songs,I knew most of them.Streetlight was,of course, amazing. They mixed Point/Counterpoint and Keasbey Nights, which was cool because I've always thought about the correlation between the two songs.
By the way,Reel Big Fish play "Enter Sandman" anywhere else?

The reason they didn't play any new songs is cause most of the stuff they played is off of their new album which is a live album, and therefor the songs aren't new... RBF was incredible here, their energy as you said was amaing. Oh and they did play Enter Sandman here in DC... Streetlight also mixed some of their songs too...

Hmm you know that popular song 'Smile' by Lily Allen the british pop artist. It has a ska chord going on in it. And you know that Paris Hilton song 'Stars are Blind'? The offbeats are present. Ska is entering the pop scene but not in the best way for the genre. It is nice to hear offbeats on the radio but it is like feeding kids a magical gummy candy and not telling them the name. They will never find it again by themselves

The King Blues, Send More Paramedics, Lightyear, Bouncing Souls, Bodycount, Gogol Bordello, Bedouin Soundclash, Goldie Lookin' Chain, Less Than Jake, Sonic Boom Six, Captain Everything!, Adequate Seven, Capdown, Against Me!, Flogging Molly, Millencolin, Anti-Flag, Rise Against, Reel Big Fish, Coheed & Cambria

Yeah ("Pressure Drop- The Definitive Collection"). But they had some kind of special sale campaign going at the time, so it was cheaper than usual. It goes for 179 kr now, but that's still a nice price. They also have another double CD, "Essential Collection" for 159 kr.

I saw all the bands on my list except Bedouin Soundclash as I began work at 10.30 that night and they came on at 10.40! Hah gutted. But Barney from Sonic Boom Six gave me a pretty hefty shout out when they played Reading which made me feel very cool indeed
I just invested in that Mouthwash album, Kith, their new stuff is sounding immense too I saw them a couple times in the last couple weeks. Mumrah and Big Hand playing with a couple of my mates' bands on Sunday
[You Me And The Atom Bomb on Monday but this isn't a ska show]

.......So basically anyone who's in London/Brighton should come out to these shows
Saw Stza Crack again on Monday with The King Blues, I thought Stza was pretty cool actually but he rambled too much. He came on really late and everyone had pretty much left, haha. "The movement was sparked by the release - and instant success - of Gangsters, the debut single by The Special AKA (later simply The Specials) in the summer of 1979. The multi-racial septet from Coventry put the single out on their own 2-Tone label, complete with trademark chequered black and white sleeves and rude boy (and girl) logos, and changed the course of British popular ska music. Well, for a couple of years at least."
"It's a time fondly remembered by anyone who enjoyed the vibrant ska music, and especially Coventrians, whose youngsters propelled the city into the media spotlight not only for being home to the nation's most popular sounds and bands, but for taking the lead in the fight against the racial tension that was building in a country gripped by economic recession."
'2-Tone is one of the best stories to come out of Coventry, full stop,' says Bob Eaton, current director of the city's Belgrade Theatre. 'When I first came to Coventry it was one of the few things I knew about the place - the 2-Tone movement, label and bands that had come out of the city.'
