Are there any Toasters fans out there? If so, what's your favorite album? I bought there Best Of cd a ways back, and I'm looking to buy another one but I'm not sure which one. Opinions anyone?
On a different note, is anyone here going to Midwest Ska Fest 2005?
I most certainly plan on attending :]

Nah c'mon it's advertising a ska gig/night thing, if I lived in Swansea I'd well be chuffed. Bit o'the old Pama. I think we can rise above calling on spam in this thread ;) It's not like all kinds of ragamuffins are gonna come in here whoring their trade.
Listening to Skylar. Everyone else should. They were blatantly amazing the other night. Everyone come and see them at Christmas either in Southampton or Clapham. Please. :p

Catch 22 is having a Christmas show here on the 27th so I'll get to see them, and Big D is opening for them so after missing them twice this year, I'll finally get a chance to see them as well. Hopefully my radio station can score free tickets to the show for me.
Kithkin
11-23-2005, 07:59 AM
Free tickets are always nice. My job as editor for a local paper could have scored me Hatebreed tickets (one of the opening bands, Most Precious Blood, wanted coverage.) Of course... that implies I had any interest seeing Metalcore bands...
My friend took a video at karaoke Monday night where 8 people jumped on stage during "The Impression that I Get" that I'll post when she sends it to me.

Anyone got some Go Jimmy Go I could nab from them on AIM? They just announced a show with them and the Toasters coming by in Hartford in Jan. and I'd like to hear something by them.

Yeah man gotta love free tickets! I am on the Victory Records street team now & I go down to the offices every couple weeks or so, the guy who runs the deal seems really nice & said he'd start guestlisting me for things - so I should hopefully get the next Streetlight tour free!
I took some pictures tonight of Streetlight but all of them came out so bad cus the stage was really dark!
However here's my Skylar pics from the other day:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v510/skaskaskaska/DSC00327.jpg
I talked to Chris after the show today, & he said "Hey haven't I seen you at like 5 or 6 other shows?" So I said yeah and he apologised for me having to watch the same set 6 times, I said "No please come back and play it 6 more times!" & him & Tomas both laughed & Tomas was like "No way!" :upset: I would love them to play that again, haha.
But I got Chris to sign his drumstick, & Tomas to sign my BOTAR. Which is awesome!
My friend manages this band who supported Streetlight twice in the North this time around, I wish I could've gone to those dates as well! But I couldn't afford the time/money to travel.
I was hanging out at the show tonight, & on the train home, with a guy who's seen Streetlight 15 times! Including their first ever show. He's from NY Uni but he's over here for a semester. Well actually I kind of met him/his friend at the Underworld show, but I met him again tonight.
I have been listening to loads of Satori since this dude sent me their stuff yesterday, they're awesome!!!!! Like an American Skylar, it's AWESOME! Haha, no coincidence I expect though, that Howards Alias started a similar side project as Rx Bandits, at a similar time.

milk2sugars aren't really my kind of thing, but Matty Pee is just awesome at web design the guy runs circles around anything I could ever do
OC Supertones are cool, yeah I really like some of their stuff. Some of it just makes me feel weird though, listening to them sing about religion and stuff. Also some of the rap parts I don't like so much.
I just saw Antimaniax tonight, I saw them with Streetlight on Wednesday but the sound went wrong. I missed half their set tonight cus I was in the bar :upset: but they were awesome awesome awesome. Also I saw Crack Rock Steady 7 and they played Leftover Crack & Choking Victim covers which were the sex.

Grrr... I don't know whether or not to be mad... So im going to Ohio for X-Mas and have the choice to visit family in Chicago or just come home... If i go to Chicago i can see Mustard Plug (a band which i've never seen before live) or i could come home and see Catch 22 and Big D and the Kids Table and a few other less known ska bands (and i say less known cause i've never heard of them)... Well i've seen Catch 22 and Big D before and they both are amazing live so im a little worried i'd be dissapointed if i went and saw Mustard Plug and it wasnt that good... Has anyone here been to a Mustard Plug show? Is it worth going and seeing?
Im super siked about the new Patent Pending Cd :D :D :D
pedro durruti
11-28-2005, 01:44 AM
Hmmm tough call. I've seen Mustard Plug, they were fun live, don't like them recorded though. So I guess that's pretty impressive. But I think Big D are awesome live (don't know about Catch 22), and that show sounds like fun because it's all ska bands, as opposed to the Mustard Plug one which appears as if they are the only ska band.
If you really like Mustard Plug's music, I'd say see them, it's always fun to know you've seen a band live.
Haha, Jas, I'm beating you by one post in this thread. BAM

I've decided that i'm going to go see Mustard Plug... Catch 22 and Big D are awesome live but i've seen them several times before and will probably get the opportunity to see them again later on (cause they seem to come through my area a lot)... Of course if my family decides not to go to Chicago i'll be stuck with Catch 22 and Big D... Rats...

I finally got my bum to the 56a Infoshop in London, which shares a premises with a vegan/organic food co-op, it's such an awesome place. Zine library, tons of zines for sale, records, CDs, loads of other stuff. Awesome. In a bit of a scary part of town though (although my brother used to live there, haha) as they have been squatting the building, had to walk through a bit of a dark scary estate.
Anyone heard The Cat Empire? My mate just played me them. They're like, latino/ska/other from Australia. Apparently their 2nd album was a bit more pop/latino and they broke into mainstream-ish. But I was listening to their first album it's got a really good vibe, a couple of bits reminded me of OC Supertones but even if you don't like them you should check them out.

Did you know that the guy from At the Drive In had a ska band called the Dregtones? It's ok music. At the Drive in is was a definate improvement.
The Ordinary Boys do a poor cover of Little Bitch, though not quite as bad as Bus Stop's cover.
I think the reason I never liked Less than Jake is that I think Pezcore sucks and everyone always says their newer albums suck. I still think Pezcore sucks, but whatever album is on my mp3 player is really good. It has History of a Boring Town and Science of Selling Out, both of which are Karaoke songs:)
If you like Ska, you'll probably like Panic at the Disco!

Saw The Big tonight, BIG HOTTNESS. It was awesome, truly. Good good band. Saw a band called Goldmaster Allstars, who I hadn't even heard of before, but they were ACE!!!!! Had multiple singers, including a reggae legend and a 14 year old kid who had a brilliant voice. Saw Pama International too, very very good, better than I thought they'd be! And Toasters headlined, what more can I say! They were brilliant I was too tired to dance but I tried!!!!! Hah.

Yo Kith, I tried looking at that vid but it just ain't working for me. My computer wouldn't play it. Bummer.
Saw a band last week called Left Alone, they were playing mostly punk but with the odd bit of awesome ska in there. They were American, I think they said something about coming from California. Yesterday I saw a band from London called Crack Howard, they were well rough but I reckon if they stick around they will get really good. They played ska and proper punk, a bit like the mix Antimaniax have, with similar vocals (they also sounded a bit like Adequate Seven vocals, I think they take a lot of inspiration from Household Name Records bands). Oh and I saw Kenisia last night, finally. Amazing band, if you like Starpool and other bands like that, they mix a whole group of genres though - disco/soul/rock/skacore/ska, etc.
Ok and a non-ska recommendation for Kith or anyone who likes Kid Dynamite type stuff, I saw Random Heroes play the other day, they were amazing. Also You, Me and the Atom Bomb are excellent, hear them too.

Yeah, I've seen Left Alone too and I agree with you that they sound like a typical Hellcat sort of band. And it's like you said, they're nothing too special. I talked to the singer/guitarist and he was pretty cool. You can definitely detect the influence of Rancid in their music. The singer even had Rancid tattoos. Hey man, that's the song that got me into all sorts of ska/punk music :) Yeah as it goes, that would fit under the ska-punk category, as that was off their Hang-Ups album which was sort of their foray into the genre, they have changed since.

Hey guys some of you might remember that a few of us from Mx started a ska site a while back, well I've been working on a new design for the site today. I know it's nothing amazing, cus I can't really work computers and stuff, but I thought it's important for me to build a new site I could actually work and update myself, as it's been left alone for a long while as I couldn't work the old site. Actually, I'd say all of those bands are influenced by Bigwig.
I met this guy last night, he was awesome. He has been friends with my friends for like a year, and twice a week I am stood right near to him in the pub but I've never spoken to him. However we were at a show and we were talking, and turns out he used to work for MoonSka and also a little with Household Name. It was awesome, cus we were talking about so many bands that so few people know about. The only other person I can usually talk to about that number of underground ska bands is Vallely, and so a new person is awesome. He was giving me some goss on certain bands as well, such as The Scrub and Howards Alias etc etc.....

Actually, I'd say all of those bands are influenced by Bigwig.
How so?
Bigwig are my favorite band and those bands sound nothing like them to me.
Kithkin
01-07-2006, 02:10 PM
None of them sound Identical, but there is an influence there.
Death By Stereo plays in a similar genre so their's is the most apparent. The flatliners have a style most similar to the suicide machines, but the deceptivly simple chording and straightforward lyrics are typical of bigwig too. Big D and Bigwig, well, it's more in the way they play than in the sound. You'd have to have seen them both to understand.
albert_bass
01-07-2006, 02:16 PM
I see. Anyway Bigwig are much better than all those bands, at least from what I've heard of them, I'd love so much to see them live...
And so SM, and Catch 22, am I the only one who loves Alone In A Crowd?

Nope. I love all of Catch 22s albums, but i like the last 2 in a diffrent way then i like Keasby nights.
And now theyre saying mustard plug is playing the frostbite tour also.
I hear rumours of A Billion Ernies touring UK in April ;)
I also hear rumours of the Scrub's saxophonist leaving :upset:

2 things.
1) While Lemon Demon isn't a ska band, they are something you'll like if you like the Aquabats or They Might Be Giants. Watch the video and try to deny it. The website has about 20 free songs on it. All of them are great.

I love ska, but i dont nearly have enough on my PC.
Ive gots lots of Mad Caddies and Bosstones, there great, but i need more.
/reads thread for bands to d/load.
umm... i have every bosstones cd ever made (because i'm a huge lifelong fan ofcourse)
be sure to get of the bosstones cd's
Devils Night Out
Dont Know How To Party
Jackknife to a swan
Lets face it
live at the middle east
more noises and other disturbances
pay attention (the most underrated cd ever, listen to it, i garuntee it will be one of your favs)
Question the answers
Ska-core the devil and more
thats just to name what i have, i'm sure they have a lil more... but i have gotten a chance to see them live december of 2002 on their last tour before they went hiatus, it completly sucks because i always grew up on these guys, but i never actually really considered them my fav band till i saw them live, and ive been to concerts before, and i have yet to find bands who can do better then them.
i put them at #1 at the top of ska bands period, for the fact they practicaly made ska for what it is today, they had done it for so many years and because how talented they are (AND THEY ARENT PUNK) now that that's cleared up, i'm sick of people mixing them wit ska-punk bands, it iritates me.
and plus they are from boston, go red sox!

I saw Bosstones October 2002, and I'm so glad I did!
Out of those releases I have:
Jackknife to a swan

Ska-core the devil and more
I think I might have Devil's Night Out as well but I'm not sure. I love Let's Face It, I have 2 copies cus they were like 60p each in junk shops, why do people trash good CDs like that!

So I'm going through all the new music I've gotten in the past few months but haven't listened to...
The standouts are:
Elvis Jackson - Summer Edition - Made me say wow out loud and made me want to stick around and listen to the whole album rather than move on to scouting out the next artist.
Flavio y la Mandinga - Cachivache - If Ska-P is Less than Jake, these guys are the Mad Caddies? Spanish ska band.
Matthew Reynolds - Loss in Sound - Skylar - st - No surprise here, anything dealing with Howards Alias seems to be golden. Except their last album for some reason.
No Roses - Hell or High Water - Ok... not ska in any way. Think hardcore like Strike Anywhere. But it's local PA hardcore and it may be the best hardcore ep released last year.
Ruins - The Brad White ep - Really good but poorly recorded opivy type ska. This is from 2000 and I hope they recorded something else, but I can't find them online because the label is defunct and a google search of ruins leaves me searching old world architecture. The band had a lot of potential.
Ska Ska Club - Sound Connection ep - Aside from the TSPO definatly the best ska band from Japan. It's less poppy and deeper than most japanese ska and the guy can sing.
The Delegates - The Diary Of Hamilton Fish - Ska-core with a bigger 1st wave ska infuence than most ska-core bands.
Yum Yum Orange - Orange Juice - This is pure japanese pop driven ska and it's awsome. I have no idea what they're saying but they cover Cartoon Heroes which is a song on some DDR mix.

Yeah I get kinda shy about dancing when I'm sober (although if I'm with a load of friends, or I'm hyper, or it's an ace band I usually overcome this). After a couple drinks I proper loosen up, so sometimes I'll have one or two drinks, or if I have to dance for like 7 bands, I will have a couple drinks at some point.
But pretty much for all shows I stay sober, I wanna remember every little detail. Plus going into the Underworld always makes me feel drunk for some reason, I always walk into things in there :upset: Plus I need to save $$ as I am poor.

The Jazz Cafe has tons of great bands but it's always so expensive. The Skatalites played their a few months back and it was £20. and not only is Desmond Dekker playing there but Lee 'Scratch' Perry's doing a three night mini-residence which is £22.50. Maybe I'll try and get my dad to buy tickets.I just realised you got Spider Jerusalem as your usertitle dude. I was gonna bring all my Transmetropolitans back to Uni to re-read them as it's been too long, but I forgot! So annoying.

Yeah Jazz Cafe does have some ace bands, & yeah it's too expensive. My mate went to see Skatalites there but I just couldn't afford it :( I thought Lee Scratch Perry had already done his 3 nights residency? Wasn't that back in October? Cus I know he did one aroud that time, & I missed it, is he doing another one?? (I remembered on the last night last time, kicked myself a lot for that!)
I've just seen that The Selecter are playing The Standard in Walthamstow on Saturday Feb 4th, for £10 on the door, ace The Standard is a cool venue!!!! But then I remembered that I already got tickets to a different gig on that day :upset:

Yeah I was, but I wasn't around too much. Where were you? I came in during the first band, then watched Dead After School. Then we were gonna take the GCF guys out to see the sites in London but I guess the singer & drummer had already left (that's why the drummer got lost) and the others were gonna stay in the van so we just headed off with Keg from Dead After School and went to see Big Ben etc  & went for food. Then we came back during the second to last band, and then saw GCF who were awesome IMO :D What'd you think?
During GCF I was leaning on the railings at the right hand side of the stage, as you look at it, wearing a Bomb The Music Industry! hoodie/ a Superman t shirt.
Nice to see Edd from Rancid News there, that bloke's so nice, did you pick up a copy of the new Last Hours outside after? Looks pretty cool, has a Random Heroes interview, and an Ad7 interview, and also Sonic Boom 6 & tons of other good stuff.

Honest crits:
For a month old and a demo it's good. You can probably send this off to incoming bands and to local clubs and be seriously considered for shows.
Your singer isn't bad but the melody line he's singing is kinda bland and the lyric rythm is akward at a few points. Sometimes he's a hair behind the music and some of the mid line pauses are poorly placed. As he grows more confident in his voice, he'll improve.
Your bassist should probably come up with a better bassline eventually. Root notes are fine for a demo and even live, but between now and when you actually record he should have something more interesting.
The drummer is good. The guitar player is competent, but it could use a little more than simple upstrokes on the off beat.
There are a few places where the horn obviously skrews up. Like after the second verse when he plays something other than the main horn line. The line itself feels like an afterthought and doesn't quite fit the song.

I was spoilt for choice by those stalls inside! I bought some zines and stuff, I wanted to buy some proper merch but I got no $$ :upset:
Well I sat through two and half crappy hardcore bands with hilarious dancers at the bar before coming to the front for GCF who were brilliant. I was wearing a leather jacker and a Bad Brains shirt.
So keep in mind that we've been together for about a month:

Pretty good. It shows a lot of potential if you've only been together for a month. The song was really quite catchy.

We have a pretty good understanding of our limitations. The recordings were made, more than anything, so that we could hear how we sound, to get an idea of what we've accomplished on our way to playing a silly Battle of the Bands at my high school. We also wanted the opportunity to show our friends and classmates what we've been up to.
My bandmates are on varying levels of musical experience, but none of us are used to playing in a band in this sense.
My previous experiences in a small combo setting were in jazz and funk music, playing only standards. I have written music, but never to be played by a band, per se. I'm also a fan of ska music, and all that, and am passionate about playing it, but never thought it would be something I'd do. I joined this band because I was asked, and I'm certainly glad, but I don't fancy myself "a horn player in a ska band" by any stretch.
Our guitarist is 14.
Our singer has never done anything remotely like this. We are all amazed at what he's been able to do, coming from no musical background whatsoever.
Our trombonist has been out of commission for three years now, cracking the case for this band, and his only previous experience was playing in the school band until his Freshman year. I have had to work his parts out with him pitch by pitch to get the desired effects, but he's definitely improving and getting his facility back.
I don't rightly know what kind of experience our bassist has had.
The drummer has been playing for not terribly long, and he said he's never been in a band that's gotten this far off the ground.
It's all a tremendous learning experience and trial by error, but I'm really amazed that we've pulled anything together at all. Our second song, for example, is a massive improvement on the first.
We've been in this to have fun from the start, because hey, what's ska music if not fun? We're all very passionate about getting good results out of our work, but the most important thing on our mind is to enjoy playing upbeat, exciting music and sharing our ideas and energy with others.

Hired Geeks? – A crazy ska band that reminds people of Mu330 only with a better singer. The first song on their myspace (http://www.myspace.com/hiredgeeks) isn’t very good but the other two are sick. One of the best new bands I’ve listened to in a long while.
The Scrub – A ska band out of the UK that plays fun music with really cool horn lines and good vocal play. They’ve got a local following which probably shouldn’t be a surprise. They’re confident musicians and know what they’re doing. They have a myspace (http://www.myspace.com/thescrub) which I’m sure is a big surprise to nobody.
Skylar – Skylar is/was a sideproject of the singer of Howard’s Alias. It’s a bit slower than Howard’s Alias, but the voice will be very familiar if you’ve ever heard HA. Where HA moved towards the rock end of things towards the end of their career, Skylar focuses on the ska. The technical ability is still obviously there though… in case you were worried. There’s even a myspace (http://www.myspace.com/skylark).
$up - $up is a skacore band out of the UK with some very catchy horn lines and a pretty good singer. They’re very hard to find online because of their stupid name but they have a website (www.supsite.co.uk) and you can download some songs off of their label’s website (http://www.totalselloutrecords.com/).
Aquabats – The Aquabats are a silly silly band. If you like Blink 182’s way with lyrics, you’ll probably like them. I don’t listen to them much, mostly because I hate the singer’s voice. They’re supposed to have an amazing live show. You can listen to them on their myspace (http://www.myspace.com/theaquabats) or purevolume (http://www.purevolume.com/theaquabats)
Ska P – A Spanish ska band out of… somewhere. They play some of the most entertaining music outside of the Suburban Legends. Sure, I can’t understand most of what they’re saying but the horn lines, the vocal melodies, the backing music is all so good that you can listen to it anyway. Their live album is ridiculous. Listen to some songs on this fan’s myspace (http://www.myspace.com/skapdejuarez)
The Rx Bandits – A prog-rock ska band. That doesn’t really make sense until you listen to them. Progress is considered a must own album up there with Big D’s Good Luck and Catch 22’s Keasby Nights. I think I like The Resignation better, but the do move a little further away from Skapunk on that album. They are a very socially conscious band and that’s reflected in the lyrics, which are about media images, drugs, corporations and education inequality. Their singer may be one of the most talented singers in the skapunk genre. They have a bunch of songs on their purevolume (http://www.purevolume.com/rxbandits) and their myspace (http://www.myspace.com/rxbandits)
Howards Alias – Howard’s Alias is a UK band that is very talented. They play a prog-rock ska along the lines of newer Rx Bandits. The singer’s voice is very unique and I love it, but my roommate doesn’t. Their first two albums are two thoroughly entertaining albums and The Chameleon Script is one of the best debut albums outside of Catch 22. You can listen to songs by going to their myspace
Sonic Boom Six – A ska-hop band from the UK. I love this band. The lyrics are unabashedly political and at least even with Streetlight Manifesto’s, if not faster. The singers are a girl and a guy and their interplay makes for a completely interesting listening experience. Sounds to Consume is a great album all the way through (though the dub tracks on the Champion Edition aren’t their best work). Listen to some songs on their myspace (http://www.myspace.com/sonicboomsix) or purevolume (http://www.purevolume.com/sonicboomsix)
A Billion Ernies – A hardcore ska band. I guess. Their new album is called Stop Calling Us Ska… so maybe they don’t want to ska. Their singer can’t scream but does anyway. When he isn’t screaming he sounds pretty damn good. The musicians are pretty talented. They have a myspace (http://www.myspace.com/abillionernies) and a bunch of songs on their purevolume (http://www.purevolume.com/abillionernies).
A Girl Named Craig – A Girl Named Craig are a very popular band and I don’t quite know why. They sound a bit like early Reel Big Fish but not quite as good. Too much rock, not enough ska. You can listen to some songs on purevolume (http://www.purevolume.com/agirlnamedcraig)
Adequate Seven – Not quite a ska band, but they would probably appeal to most ska fans. Big on the Funk big on the Punk and big on the Horns. They are overtly political and know how to make really catchy music. They have a myspace (http://www.myspace.com/adequateseven) and a purevolume (http://www.purevolume.com/adequateseven)
Bonkaponxz – A German band. Don’t worry though, they sing in English. They’re pretty good. They aren’t the Ska-P of Germany, but they’re more than competent. They have quick, interesting horn lines, a great vocalist, and a heavier sound than most foreign skapunk bands. You can download a few songs off of their website (http://bopx.ch/index_1.htm)
The Menzingers – A Ska band that is probably kind of local to me. It’s ex members of Bob and the Sagets and some other band. What’s surprising is how good they are. They call themselves indie/reggae/punk on myspace (http://www.myspace.com/THEMENZINGERS) and that’s pretty accurate.
The Cat Empire – An Australian Latin/Hiphop/Reggae band. If that isn’t enough to interest you, I don’t know what would be. They manage to pull it off to. There’s some ska and some jazz in there too. And some Cake influence on the singer. See for yourself on myspace (http://www.myspace.com/thecatempire)
Catch-It Kebabs – A UK skapunk band with a great horn section and quick lyrics. From their label’s website (http://www.dothedog.com/bands.htm), “The Catch-It Kebabs’ sound ranges from blazing ska/punk & peppy 2 tone to surging 3rd wave ska & sassy swingcore.” They have a myspace (http://www.myspace.com/catchitkebabs) where you can hear that first hand.
Daly's Gone Wrong – A skacore band that sometimes strays into emo. They are a bit too hardcore for me, but they play what they want and they are good at what they do. Their new stuff strays a bit too close to emo and doesn’t see to have much to do with ska anymore. But The Fourth Wave is a pretty good album that has a decent Big D influence. You can listen to some of their songs on their myspace (http://www.myspace.com/dalysgonewrong) or their purevolume (http://www.purevolume.com/dalysgonewrong)
Dogged Skankers – This band is a French band that I have 6 songs of and love them to death. They make extremely skankable music with a good touch of rock, catchy horn lines and a great singer. You can download one song off of whatever this (http://doggedskankers.propagande.org/) is. I can’t stop myself from whistling along while they play.
Dregtones – Before there was At the Drive in, there was the Dregtones. They’re an ok ska band though the EP I have is pretty poorly recorded. They had a lot of potential, though I’m guessing that if they had stuck to ska they wouldn’t have made it anywhere.
Duff Muffin – A UK skapunk band with quick licks and quick lyrics. The singer reminds me of Big D and the Kids Table though the rest of the music isn’t that complicated. Simple and solid and probably a lot of fun to see. They have a good ability to switch between quick and slow ska riffs. Listen at their myspace (http://www.myspace.com/duffmuffin)
Pama International – Pama International is a very chill UK ska band. They play a blend of ska, dub and reggae and know what they’re doing. The dub influence is a bit too heavy for me, but they’ll probably appeal to you if you like a bit of dub. You can listen to two full songs and two samples on their myspace (http://www.myspace.com/pamainternational).
Rebelation – Another UK ska/dub/reggae band. They are very rooted in first wave ska. If the Skatalites are your thing, this band will probably appeal to you. You can listen to them at their myspace (http://www.myspace.com/rebelationuk)

Monkey Jacket – From their website “Monkey Jacket is a Pop-Punk Screamo band from Denver, Colorado. Their hardcore influences dominate the local scene with pure pizzaz, along with pizzas.” I’ve only actually listened to the stuff on their myspace (http://www.myspace.com/monkeyjacket), and those are very good. They also have a lot of support from 21deadmonkeys (http://www.21deadmonkeys.com) which is where I heard of them in the first place. They also have a purevolume (http://www.purevolume.com/monkeyjacket)
Elvis Jackson – From their website “Elvis Jackson are finest ska punk hard core reggae metal band with great live show and positive attitude.” And that’s actually pretty true. Maybe not the finest, but they sound great on album and probably do a pretty good job live. I think they’re from Slovenia but they sing in English. They’re probably my favorite new band (at least, new to me – they formed in ‘97) and are worth checking out. You can download some songs off of their Website (http://www.elvisjackson.com/content.php?content=discography). The first album is just minute long samples, but some of the other albums have full songs for download.
Manic Sewing Circle – A young skapunk band with vocals reminiscent of Big D and the Kids Table. They have a purevolume (http://www.purevolume.com/manicsewingcircle) and a
myspace (http://www.myspace.com/manicsewingcircle) but purevolume is the only one that has a full song with lyrics. That song is pretty good though.
Flavio y la Mandinga – Flavio. as you might be able to tell, are a Spanish language band that give Ska-P a run for their money as the best Spanish language band. In fact, they give most bands a run for their money. They combine ska and latin music in a way that makes it so you can’t help but get up and move. Go to their website (http://www.flaviomandinga.com/radiokriminal.htm) and you can listen to a lot of songs in their flash player. It’s not the easiest way to listen to music, but it’s worth it.
Fuzigish – A South African political ska punk band. They’re a bit heavier on the punk than on the ska, but they do both pretty well. The lyrics are quick and consistent and the basslines are simple but effective. There is a definite sublime influence. Have a listen at their purevolume (http://www.purevolume.com/fuzigish)
Go Jimmy Go – Go Jimmy Go are a traditional ska band with some Hawaiian influence. If you like the Toasters or the Slackers, you’ll like these guys. They have a myspace (http://www.myspace.com/gojimmygo) where you can become their e-friends!
High School Football Heroes – A ska-rock band with energetic vocals and a good backing band. They feel a bit like the Arrogant Sons of Bitches. At times they stray into the punk with horns area, but they’re still worth a listen. They have a purevolume (http://www.purevolume.com/highschoolfootballheroes) and the told me they want to be friends with you on myspace (http://www.myspace.com/hsfh)
Hot Stove Jimmy – From AMG “Hot Stove Jimmy are a power ska band in every sense. They combine fast ska riffs with a punk feeling, rough vocals, a pounding rhythm section, and a very tight and bright horn section.” To add to that, this band is from the same area as the Blue Meanies are obviously influenced by them. Unfortunately they broke up a while ago and I can’t find anything for you to sample for free.
Hub City Stompers – Hub City Stompers are made up of ex-members of Inspecter 7 and Tri State Conspiracy and a few other bands. Their experience shows in their masterful combination of ska, punk and reggae. Listen to a few songs on their myspace (http://www.myspace.com/hubcitystompers).

A truely amazing live band should be able to blow you away without costumes and staged fights/choreography.

The Super Pineapples – The Super Pineapples are a band out of California with a great sound. They’ve been around since 98ish and it shows. Strong horns, catchy riffs and a talented singer ad up to one band that will not get out of your head. Listen at their myspace (http://www.myspace.com/thesuperpineapples) or purevolume (http://www.purevolume.com/thesuperpineapples).
King Django – King Django is a force in the Ska world. He may be the single most influential person aside from the lead singer of the Toasters in the American ska scene. He has produced countless albums, collaborated with too many bands to count, he owns Stubborn Records and has a quite a few releases under his belt. He play’s nearly any kind of ska you’ve heard of and it all sounds pretty good damn good. He has a few of his songs on his myspace (http://www.myspace.com/kingdjango). Just listen to Reason and try not to move.
Offbeat in Suburbia – Offbeat in Suburbia are a Jersey Ska band and you know what that means. If you don’t, it basically means that they know what they’re doing. Quick gang vocals, the slightest hint of hardcore thourghouly entertaining horn lines and guitar riffs and the ability to capture an energetic sound make this reletivly new band worth checking out either by purevolume (http://www.purevolume.com/offbeatinsuburbia) or by myspace (http://www.myspace.com/offbeatinsuburbia).
Pain – Pain is a poppy ska band with amusing lyrics and an amazing horn section. They play some pop punk and some funk and have a sound that I can only describe as fun. One of their songs is midgets with Guns. They're in your mouth and they shoot your teeth causing so much pain and the only way to kill them is with a girls tounge. They have an endorsed (http://www.myspace.com/painantidote) myspace and some other (http://www.myspace.com/paintheband) myspace.
Satori – Satori is a ska band on Asian Man Records. That’s it’s first plus. It’s made up of members of the RxBandits and features guest spots by Chris Murray and the Exit. It would take a lot to screw that up. A chill blend of soul, ska and reggae that will appeal to you if you like any one of the three. You can listen at their myspace (http://www.myspace.com/satorimusic) or they stream songs on their website (http://www.satoriband.net/)
Solabeat Alliance – Previously known as Spankboy, this band brings together Calypso Ska and Punk Rock. And Energy. Lots of Energy. You can feel it on all throughout the album from the slower Calypso tracks to the harsh punk breaks. You can download two tracks, Heroes (http://www.moonska.net/mp3/solabeat_heroes.mp3) and Set it Off (http://www.moonska.net/mp3/spankboy.mp3), from Moon Ska Europe.

I have Awfully Quiet and Question the Answers atm.

Their last three (Let's Face It, Pay Attention, and Jacknife to Swan) are the most listenable albums. The live in the Middle East album is probably pretty good too.

It should be the IST, International Ska Tour, and they should play somewhere other than the middle of nowhere.

Did you hear the Flatliners won and theyre opening for this!!!
i'm with kithkin....middle of nowhere is not cool
though i think the NYC ska kids would say that here is the middle of nowhere....it's not though! there's actually a city here, although it's probably the only city where you see trucks with confederate flag bumper stickers driving through the city....we have rednecks IN our city! but kids here like ska....they're idiots that mosh to the toasters....but they come out of the woodwork for a good ska show

It's Big Bad Voodoo Daddy
http://www.bbvd.com/
I didn't see that, the ISC says they're still counting votes but I wouldn't be surprised.
I'm in the middle of nowhere too, but I don't mind driving 5 hours to NYC or 3 to Philly or somewhere in Jersey. Or 9 to North Carolina even.

Get Save My Soul by Big Bad Voodoo Daddy, I bought it a few months ago and it's just a bit good.
I can't wait until May kids, who's coming to the Do The Dog 10th Anniversary bash in London? Last I heard is it's a 3 day thing now, not just one day, there'll be 4 bands on the Friday, 8 bands on the Saturday, and 8 bands on the Sunday.
Best thing? I finish my exams on the Friday. Worst thing? I have to have moved out of my halls by the Sunday morning at 10am. Sooooo I will figure something out.
TWO MORE AWESOME THINGS:
--It'll cost £25 for the WHOLE thing (Friday->Sunday)
--These bands are gonna play: Smoke Like A Fish, Too Many Crooks, Rebelation, Splitters, Skylar, Duff Muffin, Catch It Kebabs, 3 Minute Warning, The Beat, The Toasters, Rank Deluxe, The Scrub, Rough Kutz, The King Blues, Suicide Bid, Skaface, The Darling Reds, Southshore + 2 more bands
So, it's a date then?

Hey at the Reel Big Fish show last night they were playing like a ska/dub/reggae version of Dark Side Of The Moon, wtf? Most of it was pretty awesome, although the improvised screaming/singing part was a bit crap. But I was wondering who did this? Was it one artist or a whole bunch? & when did it come out?
EDIT: by "playing it", I mean it was the CD they were playing between bands.
EDIT2: yeah ok I suddenly remembered that Dub Side of The Moon that was released a bit ago. Hossome.

Anyone got suggestions of some swingish or really groovy ska music? I was suggested The Slackers, but I didn't like them too well. Anything really jazzy too. I'm not wanting the basic punk-ska or reggae-ska, if you know what I mean.

Well if you want some nice straight up jazz/swing I'd say Cherry Poppin' Daddies, or The Littlest Man Band, both are awesome

I didn't particularly get into anything mentioned, except the Cherry Poppin' Daddies, who are sweet as hell. the Toasters were very good, but they didn't have that grrove feeling i am looking for. As far as ska goes, they will probably end up being one of my favorite groups. The Littlest Man Band's album I downloaded seems to be kind of acoustic based and slow, so I'm guessing it's probably not a good representation of their normal sound or anything. Is there a specific album I should check out?
Oh, and I haven't gotten around to checking out The Skatalites yet.
Any more stuff like The Cherry Poppin' Daddies?

I'm currently really really really really pissed... I've spend like the last week trying to find somewhere to buy some My Dad Is Big cds... I can't even find a freaking list of the cds they released... I fail at everything... Over the past couple of weeks i've been hard at work... I noticed only about half of the albums on my iTunes were complete so i've been working hard to get all the complete cds on my iTunes... I have everything but the My Dad Is Big cd... I'm sorta OCD when it comes to this stuff so its really starting to piss me off...

The Rick Johnson Rock and Roll Machine is a side project of the bassist from Mustard Plug.
I don't really like Mustard Plug. They're fun and all, but their music is pretty bland. That's why it's odd that Rick Johnson's music is so good. Why isn't he writing all the music for Mustard Plug, cause then it wouldn't just be generic ska...
Anyway, he played with Bomb the Music Industry... I don't know if it was the fact that Rick isn't a singer and he was on tour for 2 and a half weeks, but he couldn't sing at all (compared even to Jeff from BTMI/ASOB).
It was an interesting set. They played together and played each other's songs and were really quite good together, but I'd rather see Bomb the Music Industry with a whole band like he usually does.
The most interesting this was this guy who opened for him. He played Randy-esq punk rock and roll as a one man band. That's not the interesting thing. He played guitar, drums, keyboard and bass at the same time. While singing. It was ridiculous.
He played the Bass with one foot. A bass and snare drum with his other foot.
