Yep, Over The Top. I was supposed to go with them on their tour as I normally go to just about every show with them out of town but my work schedule wouldn't allow it. :(
If you can get to Toronto you should check them out on the 30th. They're pretty tight live and put on a good show as do the other bands on the tour.
Oh how I would love to see them, with the knockouts right? but, I work Tuesdays.. Alex, from OTT I think he told me that they were playing the Ajax date for the 27th, I guess He, ( or I) was mistaken.

I'm not sure who they are playing with.

It was probably Alex who was mistaken. They only had 3 or 4 dates confirmed until last week when the rest fell into place. I'm pretty sure they were trying to get the Ajax show but I guess it didn't go through.

Yo Ihatecelebrities,
I think that I'm going to skip the slm show in Seattle and go see the one in Portland, so maybe I'll see you there. (Because my mom wants me to start visiting colleges, so I'm going to visit Reed and then go to the show)

Ps. Do you know where it is?

Not yet, they've posted info on every show of their tour except the Portland one. But last year they played at the New Paris Theatre, so they'll probably play there or at the Loveland.

I checked kingbanana.net and it looks like they're playing at New Paris Theatre for $8. If you know where Burnside is it's pretty easy to find, right next to the bridge on I think 2nd. What's your real name?

I saw them in concert in April I think it was. I think they're still touring.

Pie Tasters are coming by Hartford again and Big D and the Kids Table is opening for them so since I missed Big D when I missed Warped I'm definitly checking out that show. That and my girlfriend loves the Pie Tasters.

So, Ska Is Dead is comming up. Sounds reallly fun, but its on a school night, so I dont know if i'll be able to make it.

And this weekend, I was at the best ska show, I mean normally you have a group of kids that skank the whole night, then the rest just watch the band right? Welll at this show, Everyone skanked to every song. We had the band members out there with us and everything. It had a really cool vibe, Its something that you dont feel at punk shows.

Big D are opening for the Pietasters in CT...

That seems odd. Unless they insisted that the older band get the top billing.

I saw Bedouin Soundclash last Friday. I happened to get at the front, on the bar, just cus my friend got there early and had a big space. I was disappointed with their set to be honest, it was only half an hour long cus they were the first band onstage at a festival. All they played off Sounding A Mosaic was When The Night Feels My Song, Jeb Rand, Criminal, Shelter, and Gyasi Went Home I think. They played a Clash cover as well which was cool, and another couple of songs I didn't know (one was off their 'new CD' - they haven't officially released Sounding A Mosaic here yet but it was a song I haven't heard so maybe a UK extra?). They were a good live band, though, even though the sound was terrible for the first couple of songs, the vocals were hardly audible. I wanna see them play a longer set, though.

I'm worried about how big they are getting here though, they are getting massive airplay on Radio 1 (the biggest national station), Radio 1 DJs really love them. Also they're supporting The Ordinary Boys on their next tour, so they will probably get huge. All a bit weird!

Anyhow, here's my pictures from when I saw them (not great quality, all taken on my phone)

Soo i need some help. I want to make the perfect ska mix for when im in the ska mood, so i can just pop that cd in and enjoy it the whole way through. I need about 12-15 more songs so any suggestions? So far "walking away" is going to be on there, "little bitch" by the ordinary boys, and a few others. :)

Big D is pretty orgasmic, the only thing is, they're usually on the same bill as hard, crazy punk bands. Like the last time they came to Buffalo, they opened for the casualties and anti flag, so i had to put up with these insane and violent skinhead kids, but big d is totally worth it. And they're lyrics are funny and cool, not really immature but i do have to say, the like 600 F bombs in LAX is a little excessive.

Guys I just thought some of you might be interested in this:

Howards Alias are splitting up.

"We have all decided that playing music as Howards Alias has, because of
circumstances stopped being fun a lot of the time, and is jeopardising
friendships in or outside the band. Therefore we have decided that Howards
Alias will soon cease to exist as a band. Both myself and Nick decided we
would like to tour one last time, not only to savour the taste of what has
been our lives for the past 5 years, but also to give something back to you,
the people that buy our music and come to watch us play live. The tour will
be in October. There are dates soon to be confirmed across October finishing
with a final Southampton show sometime in the first week of November." < Matt, from HA.

Big shame, they are a local band that made it big and I appreciate them a lot. However I don't think I'll be able to make it home for the last gig which is a shame. But I think I might be seeing them in about 2 weeks in London, with Adequate Seven and Captain Everything!, which will be an amazing show.

Ahh, I thought it was border issues but this is what they're site says:

September 14 2005

Cancelled US Shows, message from Jay:

Hey everyone, I just got into Vancouver from Denver, and I want to apologize to everyone who was waiting for our shows on the first leg of the Streetlight Tour. I learned today of a family emergency and had to go home to be with my family. Bedouin doesn't like to cancel on dates but sometimes life gets in the way of plans, and you have to let it take its course. I hope you all understand, and I promise that we will be back to the area shows where we missed when we can. We are going to start again next week doing press in the UK and then rejoin the tour in Orlando, we will still be doing our waterloo/laurier dates as well. See you guys soon, peace.

No, sorry. I went to see them in a few months ago though, very cool.

Just got back from Streetlight, bitches. There was one song that I didn't recognize, but they I don't recall Tomas announcing a new song, so, I don't know. It was awesome though, even though Bedouin Soundclash weren't there :(

Ahh, I thought it was border issues but this is what they're site says:

Were people around you singing along?

If they weren't, then it was probably a new song (or possibly a BOTAR song they never released).

If they were, it may have been a cover song.

So update on the new heatskores cd.. Wellll It is alot more punk then ska. Reminds me alot Of Loc/Cv heatskores style. It grows on you fast. took me a couple listens to like it this much. Anyone that has the chance pick it up. But if you dont already F'uck Em all Big Or Small, is better( more ska) but im glad, Smile Tomorrow Will Be Worse ( new cd) Still has the upstroke ska guitar sound.

I'm having trouble remembering, but I don't think anyone was singing. I'm pretty sure it was a somewhat upbeat song, cause I remember more skanking and less moshing

Fresher than Reel Big Fish. They were getting a bit stale, although the last album had a little bit more ooomph than the one before. I reckon Forces of Evil remind me of a TTRO era Fish, which was my favourite era, and that's why I like it so much. It's a shame you can't really get away with comparing them with Fish, though, there are too many similarities!

Saw Howards Alias for (probably) the last time last night. Was weird, they just like played all newer stuff off the last 2 albums, and the only song from Chameleon Script was Rob Wants You Dead. It's a class song, but that was the only one they played, which I was a bit disappointed about but it was understandable as they only had a short set. Captain Everything! played, wow I love that band, haven't seen them in over 2 years but oh my, I am gonna try see them more now....They're such funny guys and their music is awesome. Adequate Seven came on, and they just stormed it. They played about 3 or 4 new songs (Splitting Up, Now It's Time, Set Your Sights) and then just played most of the amazing songs from the old album including Choices, Protest Beat, and The State We're In......Ah was just awesome. Worth the £6 travel and mission it took to get there! ACE! :D

;) You love it. £6 is about $10. I've got a bunch of Americans living in my halls (one from Wisconsin and one from Philadelphia in my kitchen) and the exchange rate is killing them. Everything is totally expensive compared with 'back home', apparently. It's easily true, I mean a night out here (London) costs a LOT of money.

I suppose this isn't the best time to say I might be seeing Adequate 7 & Howards Alias again next week for £6.50 10 minutes away in Camden  ... Ok so I won't tell you that.

Who else has been to the Ska is Dead tour this year? I went on September 10th in Chicago. It was simply amazing. The only disapointment was the fact that The Toaster's trumpet player as well as organ player were no where in sight. They played amazingly just the same, but it was sort of a let down.

So I was filling out a job ap for a cd store and it asked "name 3 artists in these genres" and had a list. When it got to reggae I went with "they did trad ska and anyone that's not a ska freak won't know the difference" :D So I put Toots & the Maytals (on the basis that their song is where the word reggae came from) and Laurel Aitken and Bob Marley. I can't name any reggae artists that didn't originally do trad anyway.

Awesome news about the Vicars, Kith, I keep seeing them plugged on some other website but I can't remember what one it is...

I just got back from seeing Adequate Seven & Howards Alias again - this time it cost me £8 on the door! Ouch! Luckily it only cost £1 to get the bus there. However even though the venue is only about a 20 minute bus journey from where I live, it was a mission to get back and it took us over 2 hours ... It was all fun, though. And I got Ad7's setlist, was very awesome. Had exactly the same spot as last time as well, so I took a couple more cool photos. Yeah.

-Superman-, dude, I don't know if/where you can get any My Dad Is Big stuff nowadays, aren't they split up now? However, there's a couple places you can get Smoke Like A Fish stuff. PunkerMentality (http://www.punkermentality.com) has all of their albums for £7 each. It is in England, but it ships to all over the place and takes credit/debit cards or you can send money/cheque etc. and I know the guy personally and he's incredibly reliable and a real good bloke. Their second album is also available here (http://catalog.spitshine.org/viewProduct.cfm?item_id=673946), I don't know where this website is based, but all the stuff seems to be marked up in dollars!

I'm Jamming with two dudes on Friday. They're both ska kids.

I should probably learn how to play some ska on bass...

Superman - It depends on what kind of band they are and what label they were on. Some bands, like Op Ivy, are sold long after they break up because their records keep selling. But if a band doesn't have an album that sells, then there isn't much reason for a label to keep printing the cd, making it much harder to find.

I mean, My Dad is Big isn't even keeping their website around.

All I can find is a song on a "Know Your Skalphabelt" comp.

If you read the whole thing, you'll see mention of them.

But it clearly states in the beginning that this is mostly a third wave ska list. Though it hasn't been updated in a while because I'm not a very reliable person.

Anyway, last night I jammed with a drummer and a guitarist. Well, that could have gone better, I assume. But first practice is more about meeting each other htan anything else. Anyway, later that night I ran across a guy I knew who was with some friends, told him I had jammed with some kids playing ska and one of the other guys lights up. Turns out they were all going back to one of their rooms to jam. So I went with them and sort of recruited the trumpet player.

We're learning the Planet Smashers - Explosive and The Specials/Big D - Little Bitch for next week.

Thats sorta what im looking for... I was thinking more along the lines of like From First To Last + Catch 22 = Screamo-Ska... Or simply put Screamo with horns.. But the only reason i was wondering is cause Screamo and Ska are 2 of my 4 favorite genres right now..

In other news we are trying to get permission to skate on our school campus (i go to a quaker private school and they arent that into the idea)... They said they wanted to see us be more active (its funny cause we are the most active club in the school) and they said a band would be a good way to do it... I understand when ppl hear like Reel Big FIsh and Aquabats and dont like it...BUt once u hear old Catch 22 and Streetlight, theres no going back

I always thought the exact opposite. I had a few of my friends who had very little knowledge of ska listen to The Aquabats, and they all seemed to enjoy it. As for Reel Big Fish, they're a decent third wave band, but often times once people hear that, they start looking deeper for better bands in the same genre, such as older Catcher 22. That's just my opinion though

Chill... There are a lot of huge or big bands that sound incredible live... Green Day, The Offspring, and Funeral For A Friend... To name a few...

But then again, a lot of bands suck a lot live: Blink 182 (i still think they are insainly talented but Tom just can't sing live) and I dont think My Chemical Romance or Fall Out Boy sing well live either...

Yeh, I agree most ppl hear aquabats and RBF first, and most are then hooked. I'm talking about the ppl that firmly hate ska FROM listening to those two bands, but then they hear Streetlight, Catch, BotAR and change their view. I hope u can understand that, cause it does look kinda confusing

That's very true. I saw Reel Big Fish and there were a load of Pop-Punk fags like pushing and screaming and stuff, and all the ska fans were just there for a good skank.

pedro durruti
10-30-2005, 04:46 PM
Heh, well here pretty much every ska band isn't that big. Actually, this seems to be changing.. Streetlight was pretty crowded, now granted I was able to skank every now and then, but when I did there wasn't a lot of room. When I saw the Aquabats back in June there was no room at all. On the other hand, I saw Suicide Machines and there was plenty of room.

By the way, Slow Gherkin rules.

I understand. If people don't enjoy pop punk, and they hear band like Reel Big Fish and Less Than Jake, they will automatically turn away from the entire ska genre. The reason why they hear those bands first though is simply because they're most popular, while the "better" ska bands hardly get any mention. Yet what is considered "better" ska is merely a matter of opinion. If people were exposed to several bands from the different waves, they would be more likely to enjoy ska. Unfortunatley this doesn't usually happen, and ska is overlooked.

Big ska bands aren't usually fun live. Mostly because they pack the house and there's no room to dance.

I'll agree with this. I went to an Aquabats concert this summer, and while the show was amazing, the place was backed and there was very little room to speak of, and The Aquabats are hardly the most popular band. Kids were simply jumping around and pushing each other, and those who really enjoyed the music had zero room to skank. On the other hand entirely, when I went to the Ska Is Dead Tour in September, there was a much smaller crowd, and the bands did a great job of helping the audience interact. Everyone was able to skank with plenty of room, and it was much more enjoyable.

I don't know if I like Howards Alias's new cd...

Beat Heart, Beat? I didn't like that one, or The Answer Is Never. It's the whole part of Rx Bandits and Workin Lunch that I can't really get - the 'progressive rock alternative' angle of things. I am still a huge fan of their first album, though. They played their last gig on Wednesday but it would have cost quite a bit to come down and see it, and cus I knew they'd only play a couple songs from Chameleon it wasn't really worth it. Apparently it was pretty epic though. Lot of my mates went, buggers.

Kith you need all of Skylar's CD, if you like the track(s) I sent you so far. What do you think of them? I could gmail you the rest if you like.

I disagree. I like progress as a ska album, but it isn't something I would recommed to someone who didn't already have a background in ska.

The Resignation, on the other hand, is an album you can give to someone who likes rock (just about everybody) and say, "this is what you can do with ska."

"Overcome - The Recapitulation" is probably one of my favorite songs of all time. The way it builds, it's lyrics, the danceability. The best part about the song, from an introduction standpoint is that it follows 3 songs that no rock listner can deny are quality songs. The song arrangements remind me more of Propaghandi or a Wilhelm Scream than Reel Big Fish or Less than Jake.

It's gonna be immense, line-up so far is:
THE TOASTERS
THE BIG
GOLDMASTERS ALL-STARS
THE SCRUB
CHIEF LIBIDO
BIG HAND

Also is anyone going to the show on the 18th December at Clapham Grand? I'm probably missing seeing The Beat so I can go. Skylar are playing that's why.
The line-up for that so far is:
Crack Howard
Not Shibby
3dbs Down
Phinius Gage
Kenisia
The Fat Cats
Fireapple Red
Mouthwash
Skylar
Pama International

I hate it when ska bands don't tour with other ska bands.

Reel Big Fish is coming with Transistor and the Tossers. And while the Tossers should be fun, Transistor is pretty guitar work and talented singing...

Who wants that?

Last time they brought the Littlest Man Band and some other punk band the time before that they did bring the Suburban Legends and I can't thank them enough for that. But before that they brough Homegrown (freshman year, first show I ever paid for). The Toasters brought a melodic hardcore band. The last time I saw Streetlight it was with Whole Wheat Bread and Gym Class Heroes. The Pie Tasters never bring anything ska.

It isn't that surprising for Reel Big Fish though. They've been through here every year I've been here (4 and a half years) and this town has never had a ska band to open for them. I'm gonna try to change that.

They're walking basslines. Just know your scales and keys and play a bunch of 3rd and 5ths and few 7ths...

Catch 22's Walking Away, aside from the intro, is an improved bassline in the key of A# major using roots at A#, C , D# and F.

Damn your lucky. They play at your school. What the hell, Streetlight never comes to my damn school.

Pretty much anything by Operation Ivy is pretty simple. Unity's bassline is pretty good, so is Sound System.

Other stuff by catch 22 is pretty good. It's mostly major songs. The outro to 1234 1234 is another good bassline.

Reel Big Fish - Beer or She has a Girlfriend Now

If you want really basic ska baselines, then go with the Planet Smashers - Coolest Guy in the Whole World or Explosive or anything else. Their stuff is stupidly simple.

Hey guys I'm trying to find some pretty rare ska albums which neither play.com, bittorrent, ares, my local independant cd shop or anywhere else seem to have. So is there any chance someone could MSN messenger them to me or something? Sorry if I shouldn't be asking in this thread, please don't get mad! :(

Anyway, they're:
Forces of Evil- Friend or Foe (I already bought this once but my sister broke it :upset: )
The Hippos- Forget the World (Been searching for it for like 3 years)
Lightyear- Call of the Weasel Clan (Impossible to track down)

I have Friend or Foe and a Lightyear album, but not that one. So if you get Soulseek you can get anything from me, my name is International War Criminal (name has to be exact)

Lightyear I can sort of understand... but if you haven't been able to find the Hippos or Forces of Evil then you haven't been looking very hard.

I already bought Forces of Evil once though. Don't wanna buy it again. And I can find the second Hippos album (Heads are gonna roll) fairly easily, but I've already got it.

I could try Soulseek, but I'm not sure how it works- I gave it a try yesterday and didn't find anything.

Wow, I just looked at the first page of this thread for the first time in a long time. Why aren't the specials mentioned? That's a little silly.

It's also crazy that you put up me talking about the local band "the cheapskates" when they don't exist anymore, and have a better band. Also my sound files for them don't even work anymore.

I haven't updated the first page in a long while.

And the front page is pretty much all third wave bands. That's why there are no specials.

That makes sense. Still, you might want to delete the cheapskates off the front page.

And I just found out their second band just broke up a week ago or so. :(
