I'm just getting into Ska. Thanks for that list, I'll check out some of those bands.

What cds would you reccomend me? I like stuff like Operation Ivy, The Aquabats, Fishbone, and Reel Big Fish. I want some other, better ska, and I don't know what bands/cds I should look at.

Its good, and it has enough ska to go in this thread. Thats all I really care about.

Refuse to Die is the hardest song they have up. The other stuff has more noticable ska.

a mini-keyboard that you blew into with a hose, so I called it a keymarnica.

 That's called a Melodica, Leila from Sonic Boom Six has one, though I prefer your name for it!

That was an awesome review of the show, by the way :D

Once I went to see this band upstairs in a pub, and when we went in it smelled like a guinea pig hutch, when we came out it smelled like a guinea pig hutch + a lot of weed. Strange indeed. Ska gigs always have more people smoking weed than other gigs, though.

Except Goldie Lookin Chain, which was pretty bad as well

Hey Peter, would it be against the mod code to unban me? I posted in this thread (http://www.musicianforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=352019&page=1&pp=25) and I thought it was just a joke, but now I'm banned for two years, and that's kind of lame!

Finally, some shows to look forward to this summer. The Slackers in a week (I'm still uncertain if I should go.. considering I won't be able to get in), the Aquabats with the Epoxies and the Phenomenauts (who are really good live) and The Suicide Machines in August.

the-UK-ska-scene

Yeah the summer is looking pretty awesome for me too, well there's a few good'uns in July:

8th - Howards Alias/Sonic Boom Six/Vanilla Pod/Grown At Home (though I don't think I can go to this as Vallely's having another birthday party on the beach  )
10th - Chris Murray/Zen Baseballbat/Catch-It Kebabs/Sadie's Doll
23rd - Splitters/Catch-It Kebabs/The Scrub/The Junglists/The Lock Up/Midnight Crazies/Captain Hotknives (amazing line-up by Alex, of course)
28th - Pama International/Catch-It Kebabs/The Scrub
31st - Kenisia/Mouthwash/The Wayriders/The Fat Cats/Two Day Rule/Catch-It Kebabs/The Outer Limits

That's just the ones I have planned so far. There are also a good few in August I plan to attend, another amazing line-up by Alex, should be ace, and also my mate's bands playing some stuff, and other gigs I don't know about yet...

And of course there's Reading in August, which shows a distinct lack of ska but these are the bands I plan on seeing at the moment:

Dropkick Murphys, Transplants, Foo Fighters, Incubus, NOFX, Alkaline Trio, LCD Soundsystem, Bad Religion, Anti-Flag, Rise Against, Capdown, The Explosion, NoComply, Queens Of The Stone Age, Roots Manuva, Simple Plan, Funeral For A Friend, Turbonegro, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, My Chemical Romance, Death From Above 1979, The Dead 60's, yourcodenameis:milo, Hot Hot Heat, Willy Mason, Iron Maiden, Million Dead, Emanuel and Senses Fail

Also I've decided I need to see Captain Everything! again soon, as I miss them so much. It's been nearly 2 years since I saw them last :upset:

They said there are no numbers, and no orginal material. Some theories are this:
-They will add to every song(ie Point/Keasbey/Counter) or something.
-They will play songs Tomas wrote a long time ago for Catch 22/BOTAR.

Either way, they have us in mind and say they are doing it to make sure we don't spend money that we don't have to.

Listening to Sublime's Tribute album

Fishbone's cover of Daterape is crazy. The only special part of What I Got is Gift of Gab's new verse. Ozomatli's cover of April 29th is pretty damn good. Mike Watt's cover was dissapointing. Avail sound like any punk band would covering Santeria, which is a shame. Pennwise's cover of Same in the End suffers from the same thing. Some of the covers are of songs I don't know and the rest are rather boring, partly because I don't like Sublime's dub/ska work (feels too much like jam band stuff) nearly as much as their skapunk stuff.

Ska is dead in my town. Between June 1st and September (thats about as far ahead that shows have been booked so far) there is only one ska band playing in my town, but it's the same night as strike anywhere so I'm not going. I know what you mean, I really like the band Nuffsed, they play shows every week at this one club, but it is always 21+. If you ever get a chance to see them as well, you should. They kind of play a reggae/rock/dub/dancehall and are very good. I think they are going on tour over the summer, although last night was only the second all-ages show I've seen them play.

Some revisions I may probably add to the initial list.

The Arrogant Son's of Bitches have good music, not just a good live show. Not all of it is good, but those songs that are good are exceptional. Give their disco a listen through and you'll see. Simply listen to RSTLNE, or track #2 on the discography (actually the first 7 or 8 tracks are all far above average).

Less than Jake do have one good cd. Though, it is still my second least favorite cd on my playlist, slightly edging out the new Planet Smashers cd (though, to be fair, 90% of the cds on the list are certified favorites of mine already, I've been listening to new music on my computer for 3 months, it was time for some music I could sing along with).

I don't like the Planet Smashers and I still can't explain why. Their new album didn't help even if it was produced by Chris Murray. I guess the man if failable.

Not enough people listen to the Smooths. They suffer the same fate most of the american ska bands that were around at the same time as the Toasters do, few know who they are. See also Jump with Joey.

I can listen to the Dogged Skankers in the backround while I play videogames when I'm not paying attention to the lyrics. I have something against bands that don't sing in words I can understand (which is why I don't listen to death metal and the Casualties) Though I don't really ever listen to them. Maybe I should try listening to ska-p...

The Taj Motel Trio are awsome. Especially the song Woo!!! off Life of the Party.

I was listening to the tribute in the shop last week, and I was digging Badfish/Boss DJ, Date Rape, and Waiting For My Ruca (although well I love all the originals of those), I also thought Santeria was pretty cool. But then I was listening again today, and April 29th, 1992 came on and I was like "wow who is this?" and the dude I know who works there said "it's Ozomatli", and I was like "huh? No I didn't go, I wanted to go to the last gig last night at Astoria but I couldn't cus I was at another gig. Shame they had a stupidly short set. Last time I saw them was the best time, they had written this amazing new ska song, it was rad.

But last night, the gig I was at instead of Filaments, was Summer Of Ska tour at Underworld. I guess the fact there was an ace gig at Astoria, combined with the whole terrorism thing, really had an effect because there must've only been about 70 people (at most) at the gig I was at, it was soooo weird.

The gig was amazing, though. It was Zen Baseballbat (but I left before they came on), Smoke Like A Fish, Chris Murray, Catch-It Kebabs, and Sadie's Doll. Sadie's Doll were amazing! Absolutely ace, you should check them out here

http://www.sadiesdoll.co.uk/media.php

The other bands who I watched were obviously amazing as well, and everyone was just dancing (except me and Vallely, who were far too tired). It was an amazing show :)

Yay!

In other news, The Suicide Machines are playing 2 hours away on saturday but I can't go. But on my birthday (the 22nd) SGR, Distorted Penguins and Badfish are playing.

And then a Ska Sunday show in philly the next sunday, but I need to request off.

Does that mean they started recording on june 25th?

Kithkin, when you have the time, could you change something for me? On the very first page, there is a short description of the band Five Hours that I wrote. And it sucks. It's one of those things that isn't important, but if I leave it crappy then it will drive my crazy. I'm slightly obsesseve compulsive. Could you change it to this?

Five Hours are a pop punk band with a ska flavor (no horns), from Louisville, Kentucky. They wrote extremely catchy songs such as "Peanut Butter and Jelly" and "No racist soul". The bass lines will blow you away, and it's just the kind of music that will have you dancing and singing along - if you can keep up. They broke up in either 2001 or 2002, and everyone is still waiting for a reunion show.

Howards Alias are playing here tonight. And tomorrow night. And I don't think I'm going to either. It's like the two homecoming parties for their new album.

They're playing with a bunch of bands, I think it's Freaks Union, Sonic Boom Six, and Grown At Home tonight, and Twofold and Fireapple Red tomorrow. Eurgh, I suck, I should be out there having good times but I can't be bothered

I got it at Warped Tour (after I saw them :)) and the only disappointment is that they don't have the song New Year's Day on it. That song was definitely the best one they played, and it was like a cover of five songs in one, the ones I can remember where they took a verse or chorus or two from is Police and Thieves, Guns of Brixton, A Message to You Rudy and Johnny Appleseed

They're playing Reading/Leeds festivals over here, first band of the first day at Reading, brilliant start to the festival for me :D And the aforementioned friend, Alex, should be putting them on at London on their mini-tour afterwards. Which will be wicked :)

Here's to Life is by the Bandits of the Acoustic Revolution, but it is really good. The Big Sleep's really good too. I usually skip A Better Place, A Better Time because its so slow and all. I like it, but it's sort of a heavy subject matter I suppose. Point/Counterpoint is fun though. I turned it on for my friend and was singing it. My other friend sang the slower parts with me but dropped out when it was fast. The first-timer took the booklet and studied it for like 20 minutes while we listened to the rest of the cd, then told me to "put the fast one back on." He tried to sing along, but as soon as it got fast he threw the book down and went "I can't even read that fast!"

Try again. Botar came before Streetlight. A Call to Arms came out in 2002 and Everything Goes Numb was 2003 I think. Not sure on the years, but I know FOR SURE that A Call to Arms came first. I've never noticed. Here's the BOTAR lyrics (from the BOTAR forum):

How did Camus really die that night? Were they right? When he died was it really his time? Or was it suicide? And Holden Caulfield is a friend of mine, we go drinking from time to time and I find it gets harder every time.
Three went down (but only two of them came up again.) The minimal is criminal and less is a sin, though three went down (but only two of them came up again.) I'm not going to play if there ain't no way I'm going to win.
Hemingway never seemed to mind the banality of a normal life and I find it gets harder every time. So he aimed the shotgun into the blue, placed his face in between the two and sighed; "Here's to life!"
Three went down (but only two of them came up again.) The minimal is criminal and less is a sin, though three went down (but only two of them came up again.) I'm not going to play if there ain't no way I'll win.
Hey there Salinger, what did you do? Just when the world was looking at you to write anything that meant anything, you told us you were through. And it's been years since you passed away, but I see no plaque and I see no grave. And I cannot help believing that you wanted it that way. And Vincent Van Gogh, why do you weep? You were on your way to heaven but the road was steep. And who was there to break your fall? We're guilty, one and all. And I don't know much but I do know this: with a golden heart comes a rebel fist and every single soldier wasn't fired, some have quit.
And it makes me sick when I think of it: all my heroes could not live with this and I hope you rest in peace because with us you never did. And _ _ _ you were much too young and you changed my life but I draw the line at suicide, so here's to life.

Here's Streetlight version:

how did camus really die that night? / were they right? / when he died was it really his time? / or was it suicide? / and holden caulfield is a friend of mine / we go drinking from time to time / and i find: it gets harder every time /// back off / but you’re out on the street again / don’t you stop / did you know you couldn’t swim / back off / until you’re out on the street again / i’m not going to play if there ain’t no way i’ll win /// hemingway never seemed to mind the banality of a normal life / and i find it: gets harder every time / so he aimed the shotgun into the blue / placed his face in between the two and sighed: here’s to life! /// hey there salinger, what did you do? / just when the world was looking to you / to write anything that meant anything / you told us you were through / and it’s been years since you passed away / but i see no plaque, and i see no grave / and i can’t help believing that you wanted it that way / and vincent van gogh, why do you weep? / you were on your way to heaven but the road was steep / and who was there to break your fall? / we’re guilty, one and all / and i don’t know much, but i do know this: with a golden heart comes a rebel fist / but i can’t help agreeing with those that would not quit /// and it makes me sick when i think of it / all my heroes could not live with this / and i hope you rest in peace because with us you never did / and you were much too young / and you changed my life / but i draw the line at suicide / so here’s to life!

I went to an ace ska show last night. Unfortunately there were some line-up changes, especially the last minute pulling-out of Captain Hotknives, that made it slightly less amazing than it was meant to be. Still utterly amazing/great/fun though, and I met so many new people, mostly through internet, and some through friends, and it was magic. Here's a quick rundown of the show if anyone's interested:
Midnight Crazies - hadn't seen these before, they were mental, some of their stuff was heavier/more skacore than I'm really into nowadays, but they had a lot of upbeat dancy stuff too, and they finished off on a jazzy number that was wicked
Random Hand - hadn't seen these before either, but a friend used to go out with their bassist, and they were pretty awesome! Bit different because their singer was also their solitary horn (trombone), which obviously brought back memories of Capdown, but they were pretty mental and good, also probably a bit more mental/heavier than I'm into at the moment, as I've been listening to a lot more mellower stuff
The Lock Up - I had seen this band before, and they were bloody amazing again, their singer always throws up though and you're not sure where to look when that happens, they haven't been around long but they're just amazing 2-tone-y stuff, and I can't wait until my mate releases their album on his label in a couple of months...
The Junglists - hadn't seen this lot before, but I am keen on them and have their EP, and to be honest I expected more. Apparently they haven't practiced lately due to exams, which might explain why their harmonising was badly off at times, and their violin was terrible during one song, I am still confused as to why this band was above The Lock Up on the bill
The Scrub - I was so excited to see this band, and with good reason, everyone has told me they're amazing live and I love their EP so very much, and they came onstage and I couldn't hold back any more I had to dance. I danced a lot, they played a lot of new songs, truly excellent, and the ones from the EP were just beautiful live, wow they are amazing
Splitters - possibly my favourite UK band of the moment, they were headlining and wow. It was ace, it was far too hot to dance but I managed it for a couple of songs as Braidley (their singer) told me off for 'not breaking a sweat' after the first couple of songs, but I was mesmerised I've seen them before but they are insanely good
After the gig was funny, my mate was putting it on and we were staying at his house so we had to wait for everyone to leave before we did and we were hanging in the car park until about 1am, and I was handing out donuts & muffins to the bands/other people I'd met, and it was just awesome times. I finally talked to Fez, the drummer of Splitters, who I swapped mixtapes with a while ago, and he seemed really nice, I gave him an entire packet of muffins, and Tom their trombone player seemed well happy. I also gave chips to Jym who is a roadie guy for Sonic Boom Six, I only met him properly last night, such an excellent guy. Went back to Alex's house eventually and managed to get 1.5 hours sleep from 6:30-8am today, wow I am so tired now, 8 of us just spent the entire night drinking and laughing and talking etc. Wicked.

Sorry for the lack of punctuation/sense that post made, I only got in a while ago and I am still so **** tired.

Da' Ska Man
07-24-2005, 07:40 PM
1st wave-the skatalites or judge dread
two tone-the specials or madness(both great bands) or the toasters
2nd wave/revival-the mighty mighty bosstones
3rd wave-its an easy one to name, basicaly any new ska band. id go with reel big fish, they seem to be leading the 3rd wave.

I think he wrote it after KN but before leaving. I guess I should have said BOTAR *recorded* it first

I actually didn't know that. I remember reading the BOTAR cd booklet(on the internet, I don't actually have the cd), and when he started talking about here's to life, he said he had written it three years ago and was glad to finally have a recorded version.

1st wave-the skatalites or judge dread
two tone-the specials or madness(both great bands) or the toasters
2nd wave/revival-the mighty mighty bosstones
3rd wave-its an easy one to name, basicaly any new ska band. id go with reel big fish, they seem to be leading the 3rd wave.

i can only say some great bands not albums, srry. ull have to find the albums yourself but there ya go.
Two-tone is second wave.

MMB are 3rd wave.

haha You're paying attention. I didn't notice he split those. Oh, and for the redefinitions:
1st wave = Trad which is short for "traditional"
2nd wave = 2Tone
I don't think 3rd wave has another name

maco

3rd wave = Ska-punk, Ska-core etc
right, but there's a lot of versions of 3rd wave. 3rd wave is kinda where it just ballooned and blended with everything. I mean, there's ska-core, ska-punk, punk-ska (there is a difference, ska-punk is more punk with horns and punk-ska is more ska but faster and a little louder....notice which is the noun and which the modifier), ska-pop (like No Doubt around the Rocksteady cd), etc.

Ska-punk is ska and punk to varying degrees. Punk with horns is just punk.

1st wave-the skatalites
2nd wave-the specials or madness.
3rd wave- the toasters

two tone continued on into the 3rd wave but died out after the toasters, who helped spark the 3rd wave movement. not all of the 2nd wave was 2 tone, but most was. :thumb:

When I think of it, the waves really represent more location than time or music. The first wave made ska popular in Jamaica, the second made it popular in Britain, the third made it popular in America. The Toasters I believe were very important in making ska popular in America, and like Two-Tone, their label Moon Ska has had many of the best American ska bands. So I would agree with putting them in the third wave. Maybe thats just me.

sketchyjoe
07-27-2005, 07:38 PM
They were more of a pre-cursor to the third wave. What defined the third-wave (at least initially) was the combination of punk and ska by bands like Operation Ivy and The Mighty Mighty Bosstones.

scroogey, yes Aquabats are touring I believe during October they will be here (although I have no dates yet), however I assume they are going to play some quite small venues as I know the promoter who is putting them on in my area, and he's looking to book them at a 200-300 capacity venue. Maybe snag a one hour time slot or something so it's not too much of a hassle. The FM station itself doesn't have all that great of a range but you can stream it online.

At our college you just sign up. You don't have to be a journalism major to write for the paper or a communications major to have a radio show or be on the school tv station.

Big Bad Voodoo Daddy are ace.

Last night I went to a ska show, Random Hand/The Lock-Up/Speaking Of Losers/Workin Lunch/Catch-It Kebabs, it was so ace. Really good night.

Tonight I am going to see some local ska, including Mighty Snortin' Powder Rangers...Oh man, these guys split up a year ago but they're re-uniting for one show. They're amazing. Seriously.

Today I managed to copy the Skylar CD off a friend and WOW they are amazing. They're a Howards Alias side project, and they cover The Anti-Life (Howards Alias song off The Chameleon Script) as well as doing a song called 'Howards Alias', they are truly ace. They are more ska than HA, and more reggae influenced, wow they are hot. Oh, and everyone must listen to the Flatliners, from Canada.

http://theflatliners.com/index2.html

(free songs on the website)

They're my favorite band of the moment, replacing even the Stray Bullets and Streetlight Manifesto. Described as a combination of 2-tone and punk rock by other people (I wouldn't say that, but other people seem to, like the Union Label Group). They have an amazing album out called Destroy to Create.

If you want a sound, think a harder Stray Bullets, The Suicide Machines if their punk stuff had ska in it or Against All Authority if their singer was better and they recorded in a good studio and without horns.

Reviews - http://www.earmedicine.com/100499.php

"It is incredibly rare to come across a self-produced, label free CD that is fantastic from start to finish. Most CD’s put out by the unsigned should really only be EP’s, however this CD is solid from start to finish. When trying to select songs for the download section I ended up simply listing the ones available on the site, it was just too difficult to pick. While some of my favorites are not available on the site to sample, I can assure you the CD is worth picking up to hear them. With the CD cleanly recorded and produced, songs like Bad News, Do or Die and Gullible are among my favorite songs of the year."

What kind of role does Fishbone play in ska revival in America? They formed in 1979 in LA and were playing ska and reggae throughout the 80's. They released their self-titled in 1985, two years before Operation Ivy was even a band. Of course they weren't entirely ska influenced and we all know that their sound is derived from a wide range of genres, but nonetheless they still played ska (Lyin' *** Bitch and Party at Ground Zero from the s/t are prime examples).

Does their diverse sound prevent them from being one of the founding fathers of American ska? Why are they never mentioned as American ska pioneers? What does hep mean?

Kithkin
08-04-2005, 07:39 PM
I'd say it's because they are so diverse. I'm also not sure that they played with many up and coming ska bands, though I could be wrong. The reason the Toasters and OpIvy are considered the founding father's of 3rd wave ska is because the Toasters took so many bands under their wings and because OpIvy directly influenced so many bands.

Yep, Over The Top. I was supposed to go with them on their tour as I normally go to just about every show with them out of town but my work schedule wouldn't allow it. :(
If you can get to Toronto you should check them out on the 30th. They're pretty tight live and put on a good show as do the other bands on the tour.
