ne one play ska that can recomend an amp that gets the good clean sound?
cause I'm learning to play ska and I can't get that good sound outa my crappy little crate, ne suggestions?
The Blue Meanies - A sick sick band. Unfortunatly... I do not think they are still together because I can't find a website for the life of me. Kiss Your *** Goodbye is a ****ing crazy album. Imagine polka and ska and techno synth speed horns. Confused? Here, 4 songs (already uploaded them;)) Vote No ACE (http://e.1asphost.com/Kinswick/Songs/Blue%20Meanies%20-%20Vote%20No.ace), Grandma Shampoo ACE (http://e.1asphost.com/Kinswick/Songs/Blue%20Meanies%20-%20Grandma%20Shampoo.ace), Johnny Morgage ACE (http://e.1asphost.com/Kinswick/Songs/Blue%20Meanies%20-%20Johnny%20Mortgage.ace), Tread ACE (http://e.1asphost.com/Kinswick/Songs/Blue%20Meanies%20-%20Tread.ace). Their other albums aren't (in my opinion) nearly as good as KYAG, but full throttle is often listed as their groundbreaking work. So if you like these songs, get Full Throttle and decide for yourself. EXTRA SONG: acceleration 5000 (http://www.asianmanrecords.com/media/Blue_Meanies-Acceleration_5000.mp3)
So I checked this band out and I really really liked it. :thumb: I downloaded full throttle and liked it, then I downloaded KYAG and liked that too.
Turns out this band is still together. I think that they may have just reunited or something. They're playing a snow in chicago sort of soon. Sadly, they say that they're changing the music, or something of that sort, which is too bad. I'd love to see them in concert, but I can't. Oh well.

Toasters or Slackers or Madness or Hepcat or something if you want to learn to do the ska properly, or some 3rd wave band if you want to learn the weird ska-on-crack skank.

hehe, I love the ska-on-crack skank. Unforunately I don't think a two tone or trad band has been to Portland for some time so I don't even know how to do the traditional skank

As far as I know, the more trad you go, the less your legs move... And the more your arms move... Or something like that. Some kids round here do it, I did it specially at a Chris Murray show, but I think I prefer the ska-on-crack skank anyways cus I move easier that way.
I saw Bad Manners on TV last night, and I remember how I missed them playing here the Thursday before last :upset: If the show cost less than £16 to go to, I would've gone!
On a happier note, I bought Mu330 - Winter Wonderland yesterday for £5, it's so damn festive even a scrooge like me can't help but think Christmas is ok :thumb:

Jaya the Cat - This band doesn't get enough mention in other forums. Thankfully Swede and I have this place pretty much covered. I don't really know what it is about them. Their lyrics are really good, but other than that, all the music is pretty simple. It just sounds so good together. They are probably my third favorite band on here. Umm... Excuse me but was Keasby Nights not the first CD put out by Catch 22? I was under the impression that Thomas was the first singer. Granted I don't know what the band was up to prior to Keasby Nights, so pardon my ignorance if I am completely out of the loop.
But regardless Thomas Kalnoky is God
There is too much hate going on on this forum too. The Big D comment was pointless and granted Reel Big Fish aren't the best ska band out there, but I prefer to celebrate all things ska... including skanking as you might be able to pick up.

Eh I don't know, I'm not sure if there were other CDs before that one. Keasby Nights was a cool album, for sure, and yes Tomas sang on that album. But the band was not started by Tomas, and there were 3 other guys that started the band, one of whom was Ryan Eldred, so they did do some stuff before Tomas came along. There was a demo/ep I think. If you have the streetlight manifesto live cd they play a song off of it called I'm better than you. But I don't know if someone else sings on that cd or not.
http://www.angelfire.com/sk2/catch22/disc.html
but from that site above
Before Catch 22, there was Gimp. Tomas Kalnoky and Chris Greer (of Catch 22 fame) were in a punk band called Gimp, and when Tomas got bored with playing "just punk", he decided to expand Gimp's sound by adding some new members. He asked Kevin Gunther to join as trumpet player when they met in Camelot Records one day. Ryan Eldred and Jamie Egan joined on saxophone and trombone, respectively, and in the fall of 1996, Catch 22 was born.

Hmmm, on the Victory website:
New Jersey's most successful ska-punk combo, Catch 22, was formed in the fall of 1996 when founding members Chris Greer, Ryan Eldred, and Kevin Gunther set out to play a genre of music that quickly became a huge national trend.
etc.
Hmm, I think Victory is telling fibbies because it doesn't wanna talk about Tomas :shifty eyes:

Make sure you know the scale the song is written in very well. Remember not to make the part too complicated. Keep it simple or absent during any singing. Listen to
Streetlight Manifesto
Catch 22
Forces of Evil
Brian Setzer Orchestra
River City Rebels
for using the trumpet with other instruments
Mad Caddies
Arrogant Sons of Bitches
for using the brass by itself (I know there is a trombone for the mad caddies, but their relationship is more of a bass and guitar than two guitars... if you know what i mean....)
Don't just listen to ska bands, try to listen to a lot of bands with horns and use non-ska trumpet playing in your band. I unfortunatly can't help you too much with a lot of non ska bands that use horns, but if you can find them, that should give you a more unique sound and keep you from falling into the generic ska problem that far to many ska bands have.

Check out the video for Rancid - Red Hot Moon, there's a dude skanking there. Or check out Let's Go Bowling - Spy Market, there's dudes dancing there.
There's also a video called "This Is Ska" which was a Jamaica information service film, with an old-skool English dude explaining the moves and how to dance ( ;) )
There's another thing you can get on DVD called Dance Craze, where loads of bands are skanking.
Also check out this .gif a dude made, the guy is moving way fast but basically is skanking :D

EDIT: Someone just gave me the heads up that they're putting on a Jaya The Cat show, and told me to get my *** there if it's all sorted.

I want to see Jaya... But at least the Stray Bullets are stateside still.

So recently I've been listening to this ska band that my parents used to see a lot in bars around 1982. They're called SLK. I was wondering if anyone has heard of them. I really doubt it, but I would just like to know. They may only have been known around michigan, or maybe even the midwest. Either way, I really like them. My parents have their music on vinyl, and one song on tape. I put the song from the tape onto my computer. I just wish that other people knew this band!
Edit: all that I could find on this band online, was that they're on two midwest ska compilations. http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/search-handle-form/102-2102097-1267302

I swear I have heard of them, but I can't place where.
Y'all I downloaded 2 Streetlight Manifesto shows last night, and I'm going to download another tonight. Holy cow they're amazing live. And they play stuff faster live! How?! I want to put on a show of them, but now Ian says "Hey Jas if you want to do it, then you'll have to do it, I don't have enough time". Grrr, getting up my hopes like that. But I guess Adam is the only one who'll understand that rant :upset:
But yeah, 2 SM shows on my iPod, and I think I may be seeing them more than once on the UK tour, they're AMAZING. check out skachilles.com/music/sm (that should work) and they got 2 shows there. My gawd.

I heard on the radio last week that they are staying together, and will be releasing their next album (due out soon) on their own label. And that was from the band. Who were live in session/being interviewed on the Lock-Up. I don't think they're going anywhere for a while, they've been going for 10 years and their fan base just keeps growing so I mean if I was them I wouldn't give up now...
Now now, who made a resolution to go to less shows;)
I know mum :upset:

But I've already failed that so why try? Well as yet I haven't gone to a single show, but I already have tickets to see Green Day, Taking Back Sunday, The Used, Silverstein, My Chemical Romance, and Jimmy Eat World in the coming weeks :upset: Ah why must I be so weak?
The live show I have someone asks him to play Alone in a Crowd and he tells the kid that if he keeps it up he'll be alone in a crowd. It twas amusing.
Hah, on one of them I have they go:
"They keep asking for Catch 22 songs..."
"What's "Catch 22", is it like a band?"
"... I don't know, I thought it was a book"
And there was another one where they're like "Can you back up a bit? some people at the front are getting hurt... Don't worry, man, if your leg falls off we'll sign it"

There is lots of skanking, but it gets mixed in with other forms of "dancing". Some ska bands have heavy parts that go well with moshing, and occasionaly people pogo (jump up and down)
And there are several different types of skanking, plus everyone has their own way of doing it

Forest_Fire
02-04-2005, 08:21 PM
2nd - The Specials, The (English) Beat, Madness, The Selecter, Bad Manners, Apollinaires, Swinging Cats, Higsons, and The Papers.
What was changed - Two Tone, this is where Two Tone came from. The Label 2 Tone Records was responsible for this revival and second wave. THis is where Punk, Pop and Rock were minced with Ska and Ska Punk bands first came about. Also it is centered in England, not Jamacia.
The Dance - Im even less sure about this than i was in the first wave. My best guess is it is about halfway between 3rd wave and 1st wave ska. Probably more movement and maybe some moshing by now.
two tone is 2nd wave, generally labeled by the time peroid (late 70s and 80s), the location (england) many were on the label "2 tone"

Start off with some earlier ska bands. You might like Prince Buster because Madness covered a lot of his songs and took a lot of influences from him. If you like Madness, you're sure to like similar bands like The Specials and The Selecter (great female vocals). For some skapunk you'll probably like The Forces of Evil (Reel Big Fish side project, I say don't even bother with RBF, they suck, but that's just my opinion), Spitvalves, Spring Heeled Jack, MU330 (make sure to check out other Asian Man bands- http://www.asianmanrecords.com/) and uh.... If you compare how The Glowskulls are live to their albums, they are probably one of the best live bands around.
They just sound terrible on album but put on a pretty good show.
Which reminds me, I should listen to firme at least once before tonight. Its supposed to be a decent album.

MU330 was ****ing awesome. They put on an amazing show. They wwere my favorite band that played besides Streetlight. They did a lot of cool stuff and got the crowd really into it.
I'm not really a fan of VGS's recorded stuff but they were also really good live. They had a great souind and they were a lot of fun to listen to.

I don't know who is listening to you guys when you talk about ska and punk cause your ignorance on the subject seems to be abundant. My first gripe is
"**** Rancid?" - I dont care if you dislike there music (especialy there new stuff considering the lows they have sunk too) but with albums like "Let's go" which pretty much sums up good street punk.
The second problem you guys have is that you have not listed on of the greatest ska bands of all time as far as i can tell:
Slapstick - chicago ska core band. A few of their memebers went on to be in Alkaline Trio and The Lawrence Arms, but we can forgive them for that. They had a handfull of ep and lp's that were all placed on one CD that is green and says *Slapstick* on it.
- Chad the Banned
Hint, dont come in, insult the members, talk about a band that people reading the original posts should know about, forget to mention that they went on to form less than jake, and then peddle your Amazonian wares.

I'm not advertising my own band because... well, I don't have my own band. This is a band that was somewhat local around west Michigan in 1982. My parents used to see them at bars all the time. They have their album, which only has 8 songs on it, but I still like it.

I really doubt it. However, if I ever figure out how to get vinyl cleanly onto the computer (I got this song from a mix tape we had, with just that song for this band) I'll put it up on soulseek.

Last night I saw Sonic Boom Six, and safe to say I proper creamed my jeans. Monkey See Monkey Do, it's amazing live, oh man. I also saw Adequate Seven, top-hole as always (even though we had to leave straight after The State We're In :upset: but I didn't miss it and it's my favourite so it's ok). And I saw The Filaments who play ska like they were born to do it... I thought they'd stopped playing ska, but they played a new song last night called "Insult To Injury" (I think) which was very ska. Brilliant, it was.

I haven't checked out the other bands but I thought Running Potatoes were pretty good. Some of their songs seem a bit jumpy and sound like a couple songs put together. Is that what happens in Empty Pockets at around 1:00 and 1:20 and a couple other times. They are good anyway though.

Bomb the Music Industry is a side project of the Arrogant Sons of Bitches that you must listen to.
First, everything they ever record is free to download from their site. Second, at their shows, you take a plain t shirt and they will make you a shirt for free. Third, while I love ASOB, their actual songs aren't that great and if their live show weren't so good, I wouldn't listen to them. BTMI on the other hand have some really good songs. They are a combination of Ska, Punk and Happy Hardcore (I think its a type of techno) and some of the songs sound awsome. Especially the ones recorded more recently.

great job on all that info. its about time someone recognized ska for what it is. we have a ska band at our high school called Liable To Change. they're pretty good in the fact that they just won battle of the bands but most of their songs are just other artists sings with a ska twist to it, its kinda gay.If i wanted to hear songs like that i could turn on the radio. :amaze: That sucks, he's a good player. They did pretty good when Egan left though. The show I saw was a couple days after he left and the replacement was awesome and knew all the songs really well. Now they have to have seven guys though. The replacement only knew trumpet whereas Egan knew trumpet and trombone. So now they have Mike Soprano as trombone and something Bonner as trumpet. They'll find someone soon to replace Ross...when someone leaves a band like SM, there's got to be a lot of people that want to fill the spot. Yeah things are pretty crazy for them, and they still have the Europe tour soon.

I didn't read any pages of this but the first and kind of the last one but I'm pretty sure no one mentioned a really good ska band "Last Picked". They broke up but their music is some of the best and well concentrated I've ever heard.

and there you have it.

I haven't heard them before but I do like them. And they're from NJ which makes them ten times better.
