Cryptopsy is a band with universal appeal. Fans of death metal will appreciate the fact that they are ultrabrutal death metal. Fans of other music (as long as they aren’t close minded fuc.kers) will appreciate the musical proficiency. Speaking of which:
Flo Mounier is one of the most incredible drummers I’ve ever heard. Ridiculous hyperblasts, fills, warp speed double bass, weird patterns, he does it all.
Guitar is great, superfast atonal riffs, demented, shredding solos.
The bass is pretty prominent in the mix and there are some great bass solos.
Lord Worm is slightly overrated, but he is great. Vocals range from an extremely powerful roar, a subwoofer rattling gurgle, and the odd high-pitched scream. People also say he does this “inhale noise, which I haven’t been able to pick out. If someone could post at what time during what songs he does this noise, I would appreciate it.
Also worth mentioning are the lyrics. Rather then being the standard “pathological gorefest, they are an, uhm, un-standard gorefest. More like twisted poetry horribly mutated.
Lets get to the songs:
Crown of Horns:
Starts off with an extremely loud and long roar. No, this is not L.W, it’s a movie sample. THEN we get a L.W screech and the atonal chaos begins. This is a great way to begin the album, pretty much providing an overview of what the album is like. Very demented solo.
Slit Your Guts:
This has probably the fastest riffs on the album, and a really crazy bass solo.
Graves of the Fathers:
Really, really, REALLY heavy song. Great for scaring non-metalheads with.
Dead and Dripping:
This has some of the fastest hyperblasts on the album. Again, insanely heavy.
Benedictine Convulsions:
If anyone has an idea of what the name is about, please tell me. Other than that, similar to the previous song. I know it sounds redundant, but it’s not, just listen to it.
Phobophile:
This is one of the highlights of the album. It starts off with a haunting, melodic classical piano intro. Then, instead of just brainlessly blasting in (ala Metallica’s Battery) there is a creepy guitar build. Then the bass comes in, and slowly and softly plays the main riff of the song, building up the tension more and more, then… ARGHAGRHGRAGARHGARHGAGRHGAHR complete and utter insanity.
[B]Lichmistress:
Again wondering about the title of this one. Anyways, slower, satanic-sounding riff then at 0:30 complete insanity kicks in. Again. Shortest and most frantic song.
Orgiastic Disembowelment:
Nice way to close the album. Similar to Crown of Horns, plenty of atonal trademark cryptopsyriffs. Another movie sample bookends it: “Run home and cry to momma. Which is EXACTLY what you’ll feel like doing after being pummeled, beaten, brutalized, kicked, crushed, and utterly obliterated for half an hour by this masterpiece of the Horned One’s own creation. After hearing this, you will agree that there really are None so Vile.
5/5
(Sorry if some of my song descriptions were a little clipped. I wrote a much larger and better review last night, but MX crashed or some such and it got deleted, ARG. So I had to re-type it and I did a crappy job :) )

Yeah, tis a little clipped, but you've got the important points down. I was just listening to this album this morning, so it's cool to see a review of it.
Crown of Horns is an awesome opener - I love the huge, demonic roar, followed by feeble, old voice saying "I do that rather well..don't you think?", and then Lord Worm's opening scream. Followed by Slit Your Guts and Graves of the Fathers, I think it's a great opening trio of songs.
The things which most impressed me first were the drumming, which is amazing, and Lord Worm's vocals, but it was the variety shown, such as the piano in Phobophile, the slower build up and less normal riffs in Phobophile, Lichmistress and Orgiastic Disembowelment, the lyrics in general, and the bass solos, which kept me coming back and listening again, rather than just listening once and being mildly impressed.
The sample from the end is Bruce Campbell, as Ash, from the Evil Dead series, which I think is nicely in keeping with the kind of hidden humour in the album.
As for the names, I'm not sure on Lichmistress, as I've never really thought about it. I always thought of Benedictine Convulsions being a religious reference (as in the Benedictine order of monks/friars), because of the painting of a woman holding John the Baptist's head on a plate which makes up the albums front cover.
On a side note, I can't wait for any new Cryptopsy material now that they've got Lord Worm back. The other vocalists were very good..but I want more Worm!
Finally, I think it's worth sticking in a link to Cryptopsy's website (www.cryptopsy.net), because it's really cool.

You like jazz? You would probably prefer Cryptopsy's later stuff as it's more jazzy (and more sucky IMO)
Also you would like Athiest and Cynic

no no no, you have it all wrong. He does the inhale growel in Open Face Surgeroy (off Blasphemy Made Flesh) at about mid begining. You can hear it very clearly if you take a listen. None So Vile is the best deathmetal album ever made and I have never heard anything like this before. I've listened to this album every single day for a year and a half. I can't live without it. It baffles me how man could make something this good. Lord Worm is an english professor and is a genius. If you haven't listened to this band then please do.

Now that I read that again prowler, you make a good point. I'm sorry if my post sounded harsh. You listen to Pig Destroyer, I shouldn't be trying anything at all with a Pig Destroyer fan. But I guess it's safe for me to say I know my stuff about Lord Worm. I researched him for a while and couldn't find much. Except that his real name is Dan Greener.

Open Face Surgery has to be one of the best death metal vocal performances EVER.

^^I only see 'And Then You'll Beg' in stores; I should really check it out.
Anything by Cryptopsy with the Worm in it is good. Their new dude is good, but no where near as good as the Worm. But then again, who is?
I like Blasphemy made Flesh more, but those two albums are just incredible. THey are both 5/5's.

When I first got this album, I didn't like it. I hated the vocals. But now, after listening to it for a while, I love it. Definetely one of the best, if not THE best, DM albums I have ever heard. His vocals are more of an instrument than singing, and I guess you have to realize that. Their musicianship is, I think, equal to that of Dream Theater. I can't wait for their next studio album with Lord Worm.

Great music, but I'm surprise no one has mentioned how one must be prepared for Lord Worm before going out to buy this CD. Though the lyrics are rather good, when Lord Worm growls things like "Fright mounts with the body count to which anthropomancy predicts a decline in all of God's creation,
can there be a lifestyle that's better than this?" it basically sounds like "wuh wuh wuh wuh wuh wuh wuh wuh wuh wuh..." It's kind of hard to get over that.

It's a shame, the lyrics are so awesome, but you can't understand him. He said the new album will be a mix of him and the other vocalist, so hopefully he articulates his vocals better.

Speaking about vocals, Lord Worm's is still better than Wormed's vocalist. He's a lot more flexible than froggy.

I just appreciate the vocals and lyrics separately; vocals more or less as another instrument, and the lyrics just on their own. Slit Your Guts has awesome lyrics. I need to get a knife and call it Tuesday.
I like Phobophile though, because it's an exercise in the art of the mind****. You listen to it, hear the piano intro and, if you know what Cryptopsy are like, think "ah, they're gonna come blasting in after a few seconds of this"..but then they don't. They carry on with the piano, then that slow bass riff starts, and you think "alright then, they're gonna carry on with slow build up". And then just as you're thinking that, they do come blasting in. It's just very cool.

I started off hating Cryptopsy. Then I appreciated them but didn't enjoy them. Then I could find parts I liked but didn't really get into them. Now, I love them. Slow progression but worth the wait.

Hey, I got some new posts.
I reckon Slit Your Guts > Phobophile, but only by a little bit... it has better solos and drums though I prefer Phobophile's riffage. All of the songs are orgasmically good.

Musically Slit Your Guts is better than Phobophile but in my case the piano intro helps build up the atmosphere. But even that intro could've been a little longer I think.

Agreed. I had one of the best experiences ever headbanging in unison with a pit full of people to that part when I saw em live. The pit just rocked forward and backwards with this rhythm and... it was something special. Being right up against the stage in front of Eric Langlois was great... if you're talking about the part at around 1:56 in the song, that repeats again.

This is a brilliant album; possibly my favorite death metal album of all time, something just keeps bringing me back for more, and everytime i listen it get something new ( usualy in the case of the drumming ).
However, this review bugs me, a lot of it isnt helpful at all - just saying a song is slow then utter insanity really really doesnt help describe the song.
Also, the misuse of words like melodic and classical in the Phobophile review, saying it builds up again to .. utter insanity give absolutely no insight into what the song is actually like.
I think this review is pretty poor, sorry.
