Cold's latest album, Year of the Spider, is a follow up to their 2000 commercial debut, and second album 13 Ways to Bleed on Stage.
First off, this is not Nu-metal or rap rock. yes, fred durst did produce their demo and help them with their launch. dont hate COLD because of fred's association.

Year of the Spider is a much more mainstream album than 13 Ways. It's definitely an album you can hear from end-to-end. It's one of those albums whose beauty is in its sadness. It is a more personal album for scooter than 13 ways which addresses the hurt and sadness of the listener, not the singer. It has nice riffs and the best drummer in hard rock today. But it is frontman Scooter Ward's soaring voice and searing pain that form the crux of the band.

ALBUM TRACKS.

1)Remedy
2)Suffocate
3)Cure My Tragedy (a letter to God)
4)Stupid Girl
5)Dont Belong
6)Wasted Years
7)Whatever You Became
8)Sad Happy
9)Rain song
10)The Day Seattle Died
11)Change The World
12)Black Sunday
13)Kill The Music Industry
14)Gone Away

REMEDY- a traditional cold song, with nice drumming and is the kind of song that would normally play in car radios. In my opinion, a catchier song than suffocate. ... 8/10

SUFFOCATE- the second single off the album, its a song about a suffocating relationship. there is nothing very special here except that it might appeal to the MTV crowd. its got lovely backing vocals by Sierra Swan and Terry (?)..7.5/10

CURE MY TRAGEDY- this is a sad song about Scooter's sister and her cancer. It's got poignant lyrics about the way god chooses who gets struck down by disease. 'If you can make the world a stage for me, then i hope that you can hear me scream' ..i can't stress how tragically beautiful this song is. ...9/10

STUPID GIRL- its a more catchy song that is the kind that receives tons of airplay. Its got Rivers Cuomo on guitar. It's not too strong a track musically. And could be the reason why this album didnt do as well as it should have. It's hard for a metalhead to get into COLD after hearing only Stupid Girl.
It has soaring vocals and kinda silly lyrics. People who want to hear a better version of this, download the acoustic version off imesh or kazaa.....6/10

DONT BELONG- Its a more reflective song dealing with people going stale. It's a less beautiful version of the song that is to follow. ....8/10

WASTED YEARS- the most beautiful song on this album. It is the third single and should be out soon. It starts off with violins and breaks into an acoustic song dealing with the consequences of having partied a life away. the violins and piano frame this lovely song. ...10/10

WHATEVER YOU BECAME- A softer song, about not being able to be there for the people you love. ..7.5/10

SAD HAPPY- It is a nice song about being there for people who are hurting and taking their pain away. The verses are about a girl who was 17. The chorus is a reaffirmation of faith in her by being strong himself. Interesting guitar work on this one. ...8.5/10

RAIN SONG- its about a friend of Scooter's who died in a fire when her house burnt down. It has the lovely chorus 'every time it rains/ i feel her holding me' which holds this song together.
It is, to me, a continuation of cure my tragedy. .....8.5/10

THE DAY SEATTLE DIED- one of my favorites off the album. It is about Layne Staley and Kurt Cobain and their self destruction. Unlike Staind who had a crap song called Layne on their new CD, this one is actually good. 'the needle became your queen/ the drug had become your enemy/and music was just a way for you to bleed'...a hurt epitaph, beautifully written. ..9/10

CHANGE THE WORLD- it's an alright song. Kinda heavy, Angst-ridden. ...6/10

BLACK SUNDAY- It's a song for lost love. It's not the most special song but its one that can be related to. ...7/10

KILL THE MUSIC INDUSTRY- The final song, this is where Scooter screams and a dam'n fine scream it is too. It's generally a rant about how the music industry suppresses creativity and is mindless. I find it ironic that this song is on a major-label artist's disc. ....8/10

GONE AWAY- It is a soft ballad that was released a long time ago. It's one of Cold's best songs. The acoustic ballad that this is, i found it hard to believe that this was on a WWE soundtrack. ....9/10

Overall, this is a good album, rates an 8.5/10 for me.
They are one of those bands that record companies are stifling, by showcasing their poppier tunes instead of their beautiful tunes. that's right, KILL THE MUSIC INDUSTRY.

Nice review I have to agree with you rating they are missing some of the heavier stuff that was on the last albums but still great. Sad happy is about a girl who was raped by her dad when she was 17 if you watch the dvd (if you have it) he said he met her and made the song about her Cure My Tragedy and Gone away are definately two of the best songs on the album

i also must agree that the core of Cold was missing on this album... where was the Just Got Wicked kind of stuff?

Year of the Spider is a lot more emotional than the first two albums, however... which, for me, makes it a great album. the emotional factor makes up for the lack of harder rock songs, like those on 13 Ways to Bleed on Stage. i also must agree with your comment about Cold getting stiffed, but they did jsut sign on with Atlantic records, and from a post on the message boards, Cold has written 8 new songs for the upcoming recording session. its amazing how fast Cold is getting back on their feet after losing both Terry and Kelly and from the label switch. Geffen isnt so great after all...

I prefer this album to 13 ways.

in my opinion, cold was good at first, but it just got old. It sounds like theyre (dont laugh at this) a little religious, kinda in a way, by the review. I mean (cure for my tragedy-a letter to god), im sorry but no satanic, god hating band is going to make a song like that, no matter who its about. Tell me if you know.

well if you had to go thru what scooter had to go thru with his sister, i think it'd only be logical that he'd turn towards religious things like god. Wouldn't it be kinda silly to ask satan to heal ur sister?

Personally I think this album is not better than 13 ways, but it's also not worse than 13. They're both have their qualities: 13 ways had the raw/hard sound to it that's good for banging ur head to, while YOTS was more polished and more emotional.

good review..i think that the best songs on the album are (in no sort of order): Suffocate, Cure My Tragedy, Wasted Years, The Day Seattle Died and Kill The Music Industry. I really hope they do more like Kill the Music Industry, as it is a very good song for them.

cold have never claimed to be satanic or god hating. while they aren't a religious band, scooter (the songwriter) has had many personal tragedies in his life and this is catharsis.

I don't understand the appeal of this band. Every song I've heard has been generic radio rock with a slight edge. None of the musicians are insane at what they do so I don't see the appeal. The song writing is the weakest part in the end though.

Gone Away has one of the best ****ing solos I've ever heard. It's awfully simple, but it remains my highlight of the album.

The band has evolved over the years. They have no relationship with Fred Durst anymore. They have two new guitarists. Their last two albums have gone gold. They have a solid fan base. So what if it sounds the same? If it appeals to the target audience, people will go listen to them play. They just get lumped as making crappy music because "Stupid Girl" hit the radio hard for a monthlong span.

Good review, I don't agree with some of the grades, but "Wasted Years" got a just grade. :thumb:

Kick *** album.
However, I do think that some of those songs you gave worse reviews than they deserve. Above all, I mean that when you reviewed Suffocate. Yes, you did give it a 7.5 which is fair, but I do believe that it more or less deserves a 9. But, that's just my opinion.
And... I noticed that you didn't really gve a raiting for The Day Seattle Dies, but just a kick *** review of it (but, I actually think that the line is "the needle became your CLAIM").

the day seattle died..rating=fixed. :thumb:

i found suffocate to be less interesting than the other songs on there. i'd have either cure my tragedy or the day seattle died as the second single.

and now that i've got my self titled and 13 ways albums returned, i m a go review them. will be up in 2 days,i think.

Good review, I love this album, I love this band.

Scooter really sounds like he's giving it his ****ing all; which is why I love Cold.

I figured that it ment that TDSD didn't even need a rating, because it just flat out owns. Which is odd for me to say, because one of the people it's about is Kurt Cobain who I cannot stand at all, and I can't stand Nirvana either.
And, yes Cure My Tragedy WOULD be a kick *** single, but I myself happen to find Suffocate to be a good song but... my opinion has never mattered, so let's just leave it be.

This is a great album from one of my favorite bands. To me, though, it is Cold's worst yet. I love the emotional quality of it, and it stil has great songwriting, but 13 WTBO just connects with me more, and is flat out better. Their S/T is also a work of art...it's just really bizarre and cool. 13 is the best, though. :thumb:

Really looking forward to their next album. It was written exclusively by Sam and Scooter and it is going to be called And a Sad Song Lives On.
