Violet:
Song starts out with a catchy guitar riff that leads into the verse of the song. With Courtney singing in a really calm voice, that soon breaks into a scream with vocals coming in when the guitar stops and guitar playing when the vocals stop. The song is fast and powerful and in your face. This is a great track to start an album off with, it has powerful vocals and decent lyrics and a catchy beat. 5/5
Miss World:
This is a slower song, and a rare to hear from Hole in this period of their music. The song starts out slowly, and then starts to build into a forceful crescendo, with potent vocals from Courtney. Overall the song has alot of potential and depth, the underling message of the song is powerful. 4/5
Plump:
A very aggressive song, that starts out raw and high-strung. The song is mixed with soft and scratchy vocals, giving way to a softer sound midway before escalating back into its fast and belligerent beginning. 5/5
Asking For It:
A soft and clean electric guitar that starts out and goes in to a soft acoustic song, with some extra guitar work in the background. The song is a wonderful way for the band to show their range and ability in creating great music. It's a pretty soft ballad that later climax’s into a more personal and emotional statement from Courtney. 5/5
Jennifer’s Body:
A faster and more emotional tune, with mainly Courtney screaming through most of the song, giving way to a few melodic parts. 4/5
Doll Parts:
A very emotional ballad with Courtney comparing herself to a doll. This is one of Hole's most recognizable songs and probably one of the most played. It is an acoustic song that has a very subtle beat, that is followed later by a steady drum and bass beat. After the end of the first verse and chorus you can really start to hear Courtney's voice getting agitated, as if she is ready to break free. Later in the song, it will climax to more of a electrified masterpiece, with Courtney screaming "Some day you will ache like I ache" over and over again. Overall it is a teenage girls anthem for angst.5/5
Credit In The Straight World:
The song starts of with an organ and Courtney's voice echoing some lyrics, the song quickly breaks in to a complex song that can be heavy at times with very unusual chord combinations. 4/5
Softer, Softest:
A melancholy song with, with very strange lyrics. The song is pretty much a slow ballad with some easy guitar work. That will later climax to the pinnacle of the song, the lyrics "Burn the witch, The witch is dead, Burn the witch, Just bring me back her head" brings a sense of animosity to the song. 5/5
She Walks Over Me:
This is the hardest song on the album with a real hard rock sound to it, the guitar chords on this song were also used on Nirvana's "Touretts”, that was featured on In-Utero. There is nothing really great about the song, just a fast paced teen angst song. That can be very disappointing and feels like it is lacking something, but I can't pin point it. Maybe a little more emotion, the screaming vocals on the verse of the song, is the only thing that can save the song for me. 3/5
I Think That I Would Die:
I Think That I Would Die, has a nice opening riff, with great guitar combinations. Courtney's voice has a tendency to go from soft melodic to raw and scratchy. The song has a very potent feeling and I love when the song completely stops and Courtney screams "**** YOU!". The song slowly fades out with some weird guitar work. 5/5
Gutless:
This is song is my all time favorite Hole song. It is a very sarcastic tune, with a very upbeat and in your face tune with a decent and catchy guitar solo, the climax of the song is when Courtney sings "I don't really miss God, But I sure miss Santa Clause". 5/5
Rock Star:
This is a song about growing up in Olympia, Washington. Which in the late 80's and early 90's was the cool place to be. I get the feeling that Courtney is making fun of the place and everyone that lives in the fake music world that they have created for themselves. I get this assumption from certain lines in the song, such as "When I went to school in Olympia, And everyone's the same, We look the same, We talk the same, Well don't you please make me real- **** you" and "Everyone's the same, We look the same, We talk the same, We even **** the same." The song ends with the band slowing fading out with their instruments and Courtney saying, "No, no were not done yet" they come back for a brief ending of the song. 5/5
This album is filled with scathing fury, animosity and excitement. Courtney Love can be heard attacking the impossible roles that society has tried to in-force upon women for centuries. The Acoustic/Electric sound to most of the songs, is an exellent touch. I got this album near the end of my 6th grade year, I was into Nirvana and I had heard about Hole. I bought the album haven't stoped listening to it for the past seven years. The dark mood of the album puts a certian kinda of melancholy feeling in your soul. It's a rather angry and in your face with no apologies, from Courtney.
