#209 on Rolling Stone's Top 500 Albums Of All Time List

Pink Floyd (during this album):
Roger Waters - Vocals, Bass
David Gilmour - Lead Guitar, Vocals
Richard Wright - Keyboards
Nick Mason - Drums

After The Dark Side Of The Moon, Pink Floyd had reached mainstream success, attaining fame, money, and a large fan base. While this would make most anyone happy, it was extremely troubling for the band. When they went back into the studio to record a follow-up album, their songs were rigid and difficult to put together due to the pressure of following up a huge breakthrough album. Some songs lashed out at the music industry, while others were melancholic tributes to Syd Barret, the band's mentally deteriorating former frontman. Ironically, as they were laying the vocal dubs for one of these tracks, "Shine On You Crazy Diamond", Barret had came in the studio; the dissolving of his state of mind in front of the band may have made the album itself even more emotional.

1. Shine On You Crazy Diamond (Part 1) - It's long and worth every minute. And this is just the first part! Beginning with atmospheric noise and some light guitar, it paves its way into a undeniably melancholy mood; the four guitar notes that bring in the faster part feel amazingly emotional for such a simple melody. The guitar continues into huge crescendoes and climaxes until it falls away and we hear Water's haunting vocals: "Remember when you were young/ You shined like the sun/ Shine on, you crazy diamond". Possibly the most beautiful part of the song... a slight laughing noise precedes "You shined like the sun", and the entire band comes together for the climax. The great vocal and instrumental melodies continue, making for a fantastic song. 5/5

2. Welcome To The Machine - This track makes exceptional use of stereo and keyboard effects to instill the feeling of a machine, and the vocals are still excellent throughout. Probably the creepiest song here, "Welcome To The Machine" is the first attack on the music business, with a more derisive feel to it then the others. Technically amazing and still rather emotionally disturbing, it stands out most of all for Roger's vocals and lyrics. It can be a bit offputting from time to time, though. 4/5

3. Have A Cigar - Another attack on the music industry, but a little less harsh... this is faced more torwards the press. One of the lines, "By the way/ Which one's Pink?", is a joke about the time an uninformed interviewer thought Pink Floyd was the name of an actual member. The music is more upbeat, the chorus is amazingly uplifting, and the guitar is great throughout. A decent solo as well. The end section is a little boring, and the end leads directly into the next track by turning into radio noise. Nothing really wrong with this track, either. 4.5/5

4. Wish You Were Here - Phenomonal. This homage to Barret is earnest, heartfelt, and downright heart-wrenching. The most simplistic song here, and still the most beautiful. Roger writes fantastic lyrics,a nd this song is no exception. The section of, "How I wish/ How I wish you were here/ We're just two lost souls simming in a fish bowl/ Year after year," is so evocative and beautiful, it makes an awesome climax to the song. Perfect. 5/5

5. Shine On You Crazy Diamond (Part 2) - Though this is slightly more upbeat than the first, the same formula remains, but the melodies and lyrics are different. Still, combining this and the first part as a collective makes for a beautiful listening experience. 5/5

Wish You Were Here is often overlooked for many reasons: the five track playlist, comparisons to Dark Side Of The Moon and The Wall, and other factors. Wish You Were Here is far too often left behind when put up against Pink Floyd's classic albums, in my opinion, and I think that when taken as an independent project, it can be seen as near flawless. I'd say this is one of the best Floyd albums, and quintessential to their catalog, though it really depends on whether you can fathom thirteen minutes for each part of "Crazy Diamond". Since I absolutely love it, I'd give Wish You Were Here a 5/5.

 Thanks, I suppose. This is one of my favorite Pink Floyd records, and I think you have to be sort of in-depth when it comes to reviewing their songs.

My Killswitch review gets pages of replies and my Pink Floyd one gets two.

Come on, people, this is a great record.

Great review :thumb:. I actually believe that it should have been 5/5 for each song, and that's being said from an early Floyd fan.

I like how you pointed out the best line in "Shine on you Crazy Diamond(pt1)" I particularly like the laugh in between those lines.

Amazing review, Wish You Were Here is probablly my favorite Pink Floyd song. This album truly shows the bands range and depth and it's best.

Yeah, that laugh on that line and those four notes before the rest of the band comes in make that entire thirteen minutes so much better. Those two and the climax of "Wish You Were Here" are my favorite parts of the entire album.

Excellent review. Though I find this record boring in most parts (The Shine On You Crazy Diamonds are too long for my liking; there's not enough excitement to keep me interested. And I never really liked the song Wish You Were Here) Welcome to the Machine is a PF favourite of mine.

3.5/5. IMO their worst record from their progressive era (Dark Side --> The Wall). Still quite decent and listenable though.

Now what we need is some post-the Wall Pink Floyd reviews! I'd do Momentary Lapse of Reason, it's the only one I have.

Meh. I dislike any Floyd album after The Wall. It all went downhill from there.

You guys are weird. My list of best Pink Floyd albums:

Dark Side Of The Moon
Wish You Were Here
Piper At The Gates Of Dawn
The Wall (if you have the movie, as well... if not, it's below Animals)
Animals

And then pretty much anything before DSOTM, they're almost interchangable rating-wise...

Dark Side of the Moon is the most overrated album of all time.

SubtleDagger
05-01-2004, 05:55 PM
Ha... I tend to disagree; I think that as a complete record, it's just about flawless. I also think that Animals is vastly overrated on this forum.

Go figure. :/

Dark Side of the Moon is the most overrated album of all time.

I do not agree that it is the most, but noneless it is overrated, in my opinion. I do enjoy the album though.

Great and thorough review. I love this record. I do not find a single second of it "boring". (i would have given Welcome to the Machine 5/5 but..)

My favorite Floyd albums are Wish You Were Here, Meddle (prolly my fav), Animals, The Moore soundtrack, and The Wall. And Even parts of MLOR i love, partly because of Tony Levins killer bass playing. The Division bell has some good stuff too. As far as DSOM, I enjoy most of it, but the only song I really love on that record is Time. The guitar solo pwns.

The Wall
Piper at the Gates of Dawn

They are the only two Floyd CDs I ever listen to. Occasionally I rip out Dark Side or Animals, but rarely anything else. I don't have any Psychadelic-era Floyd apart from PATGOD, I really need to expand my Floyd CD collection.

As far as prog rock this is a good effort. I really dont care for progressive rock and on a whole Pink Floyd is much more than a progressive rock band. I like other Floyd albums better but this is overall decent.

WYWH is, after ANIMALS obviously, PF's best work. I'm not so keen on Machine (bit droney, lyrics a bit pedestrian) or Cigar (bit too slow and meandering), but the title track is blissful, and SOYCD is possibly the best Floyd song ever.

i love this album i listen to it more often than dark side. you forgot to mention the absolutely breathtaking organ work that comes into the song at 6:33. it puts me too sleep everytime i listen to it and makes me dream of purple skies with more than one moon out in a volcanic wateland. you dont have to be wasted on acid or weed or any drug for that matter to be taken to a different place when listening to solos like these (which floyd has so many of) its better than the one in part 2 by far. have a cigar is also amazing i was listening to it and thought "is this a floyd song"? but then the amazing keyboard work straight out've the previous track destroyed my doubts. a good chill song. wicked review by the way

Favourite Pink Floyd albums:
1. The Wall (simply for Comfortably Numb)
2. Wish You Were Here
3. Dark Side of the Moon

the best Pink Floyd album is the greatest hits album. duh.
Although I have never heard the greatest hits album, I thoroughly doubt that it would be any good. Each album has a different feel to it and all the songs blend in so well with each other. Mixing them together just wouldn't have that same feel.
