8 Foot Sativa Is:
Sam - Drums
Brent - Bass
Gary - Guitar
Jack - Vocals

A brief (ish) summation of the band:
8 Foot Sativa are a heavy / death metal from Auckland (the top of New Zealand). Creating their first album in 2002 (Hate Made Me) they took New Zealand (now refered to as NZ) by storm. With heavy support from 'The Rock' (NZ wide rock / metal radio station) their first album was a great success)
They opened for Pantera when they came here for the NZ tour.
They have also done several tours including a World tour to (Tshirts in the wash, will update later) several NZ tours (including one for their latest album 'Season For Assault') and coming up in May To June this year (2004).
You can check them out at www.8footsativa.com
You can also check out their sound there as well!

11 Tracks of screaming guitars, insane double kick and lung wrenching vocals. Sound good ? Read on. (The last track is a guitar solo modeled on the speed metal symphony by Cacophony)

Before Your Suffering
You "buy" the cd, put it in your cd player and you are confronted with a groovy double bassline and screaming guitars! (see above) A lounge wrenching scream and into the track. If youve never listened to this type of music you probably wouldn't like it much, youd say things like... "I cant understand what they are saying and things like that"
The track is reasonably short at 2:47. You notice after listening to the latest cd that the mix / compilation of the cd is alittle off. The double kick and such is better in the later one (more money for sound engi'n)
Pretty catchy chorus although not single material, a good opening song in that it gives you a range of all things to come (Long screaming, double kick etc)

Fuel Set
The track opens with a VERY distinct guitar riff played for a few bars and then into the song. You'll notice that all the tracks are about the same heavyness, they dont really differ. Some people like this, others dont.
The vocals are much clearer and easier to understand in this song. The guitar and beat is very catchy :) The chorus is great, nice screamy vocals and nice guitar work again.

Cocktease
Opening this time is a girl saying "ohhh" Guitar intro again and more screaming. Most of the "singing" in the CD is screaming and when he actually sings (often) his voice still has that harsh throaty sound to it so it sounds like hes actually screaming... its very very cool!
Personally I dislike this song as the lyrics arn't very apealing and the song is just really the same as the others.

Believer
This song featured on 'The Locals' (movie) as their music video. You know what I mean! The song had them playing all dirty and in chains tied up to walls (dominatrix style :amaze: ) quite a cool video!
The song is great, another catcy chorus, cool guitar, bass AND drum riffs! A very nice blend :) (Dont forget the screaming vocals)

It's All So Real
Probably the softest song on the CD but still a very good one. This song doesn't feature any double kick at all (from memory) and starts off with a very slow intro with weird samples that sound like germans talking in WWII time, still its very cool.
The guitar is very well done again in this song yet again. It seems they paid alot of attention to getting their own particular sound esp with the guitars.
I noticed in the mix down of this CD the bass is harder to hear than in some CDs. (Might just be my speakers but im pretty sure)

Grown Aggression
Yet another wonderful long long death metal scream to make any other singer crap in his pants :) Yes grown aggression it is and SOUNDS LIKE! The lyrics are resonably easy to understand and not too screamy for the most of it (I dont have anything against screamy lyrics, just for the general public)
A nice double bass groove through the song that fits the bass line really well. (Or the bass line fits the double kick groove well... whatever)
You notice that after listening to all the track the drummer seems to just be using the straight double kick thrashing for most of the tracks. Although it sounds good it can get a bit tedious if you listen to it alot (For some!)

Stolen Life
Yet another guitar intro with a scream... (Hmm......) The drums and vocals the pretty predominent in this track.
With a great note to younger listeners the sing screams "Why Moth*r F*cker, Die Moth*r F*cker!!!!" ;)
Nice little solo on the guitar 3/4 through the song leads into a slow version on the main riff which is then sped up to normal speed with normal singing / screaming etc.

Kick It All Away
YET ANOTHER guitar intro.... with drums.... and another 'crap out some of your internal organs scream!' Thats right it's 8 Foot Sativa!
After reading this you'll probably think that they are pretty lame, but actually NO! they are one of my fav bands at the min and have been for some time. (Refused topping all!) You HAVE to go have a listen over at their website www.8footsativa.com then sounds. Another average song... nothing new worth mentioning!

8 Foot Sativa
Their self titled track. This was the one they orginally gave to the Rock (radio (see above)) and they put it on air and people just LOVED it! THis is how they made it in the Metal world.
Starts with another guitar riff (veerrrry catchy one too I might add) the whole song sounds like it has been really well done over and lots of planning and thought has gone into the song.
Another great catchy chorus that will leave you wanting more.
I have to admit doing my Metal show (on a local radio station I work for) I put this on after it came out and I was moshing around the station and the phone was going nuts with people wanting more and more 8 Foot Sativa! LISTEN TO THIS TRACK!

Engine
After listening to this track... it actually makes me think of an engine.. its quite weird. Just another classic 8 Foot track, double kick, pretty low guitars (in sound, ie not screaming etc) Average track. Personally I dont like it but, thats just me.

Invention 13
The last track, invention 13, is garys interpretation of a Bach piece by the same name. He got the idea from the speed metal symphony by Cacophony.
Thanks Mike!

Conclusion
Id give this CD a 8/10. Its a great CD with some awsome tracks, catchy riffs and insane double kick work but after listening to it a few times over you can get bored with it. It all has the same sort of sound which is good and bad for different reasons. I like 8 Foot Sativa, they are a great NZ Metal / Death Metal band and they will hit it off BIG in Aussie when they do their 'Elite Tour' over there soon. Listen and if you can buy / get a hold of this cd :)
My big :thumb: Up
Thanks, Doom
This is my first cd review :) Go easy on me. Forget about the spelling mistakes for now :D

Good work promoting the kiwi music!

Good review aswell.

Saw these guys at BDO. Sick preformance! They drew an increidble crowd. Haven't heard much else but will probably pick this album up in the future.

Unrelated..

Out of the few thousand copies of this album they've sold the band have recieved rougly $200 each. Major labels suck.

You should at least go to their site and give them a chance... wait.. wait... I see Metallica in your avatar... Dont worry, its ok to be weak :P

I saw them live in Dunedin (8 Foot Sativa) (Dunedin being my home town) and they were ****ing wicked. They played the season for assualt tour. (The next CD I will be reviewing)
They had a great sound!

Very Funny, I like tons of ultrabrutal, noisy sh.it such as Alien Crucifixion, The Last Days of Humanity, Carcass, Repulsion etc.

IF you don't like Creeping Death, you are not a metalhead. It's as simple as that.

And just to prove you wrong, I will get some 8 Foot Sativa.

Lol you do that. You might find you quite like them :) Ill be reviewing their second album later on next week sometime!

I went on the site and it is a mix of Slipknot and Pantera with death metal vocals.

It's way too slow to be actual death metal.

Dude, death metal is more about the vocals and the guitars and drums.
This is death metal. The whole of NZ knows that... :P

Why does it matter; as long as he likes the music it doesnt matter what he labels it as.

There is doom-death metal. But I will check this band out now. The name is pretty half-assed IMO.

Edit: I listened to the samples, didn't really like them. But good review anyhow. :thumb:

Do you know what Sativa is ? Its weed... 8 Foot Sativa is an 8 Foot Weed plant :)
I quite like it ;)

Only the tracks off the website, of course.

But if you can name a blistering track with slayer-speed riffs and blastbeats, I will d/l and may pronouce it worthy of being Death Metal.

Good to see NZ music being promoted but why did it have to be these useless ****s? A terrible band that have only really got anywhere because 'The Greenman" (a DJ on NZ major rock station) loves them so much. I have heard both albums many times and it is uninspired ****. Very rarely is there anything approaching a solid guitar riff, the drummer is shockingly boring and repetive, the singer is awful and even worse live, and the bassist has admitted in interview that he doesn't do anything but 'follow what the guitar comes up with'. Avoid this band at all costs.

And they are not even close to being death metal.

Doomith

Well lots of others like them :) You need to edit that and change it to, "In my personal opinion"

Thanks :)

I'm from NZ, I wouldn't call them death-metal. It's kind of watered down DM, more like weak thrash/pantera style metal with crappy vocals.

I loves my metal, but 8FS are quite ****. If you want some decent New Zealand metal, check these bands out:

Violence
From the dark
Dawn of Azazel( real heavy)
Cripple Mr Onion ( very progressive/Doom/Death metal band, real creative bunch of guys.)
Six day War

Yep, ive got the Cripple CD and I saw them play live and ive heard 'Dawn of Azazel' im yet to get their cd.

they're more "hardcore!" than death metal.... however still have strong metal elements

i'd say its a mix between slipknot, at the gates (the band i think they MOST sound like), and pantera.

i think they talk to much about pot :P

whats the new singer like ?

BradyEB

I'm from NZ :) I personally dont like the new singer much. Hes got a good enough growl for me but most of the time he just shouts. I also dont like the new album as much as the other two also but I havent heard it that much. Anyway I enjoyed reading the review but I'll agree its not Death Metal.
