Drowning pool… to be honest I thought they’d fade away after the death of David Williams and also to be honest I haven’t listened to their debut for bloody ages, I picked this up off emule out of pure curiosity… on with the review.
So Drowning Pool… there back with a new vocalist Jason Jones to me its still the same sort of vocal style as David’s though more defined and seems more controlled as well. The rest of the band…well not a lot has changed… Their Debut single – Bodies (2001) was played pretty much no stop and consequently Sinner (the album) went on to sell more than 1.5 million copies world wide.
They played the first set at ozzfest (2001) the same year, Later that year as Drowning Pool arrived in Manassas, Virginia for a date mid-way through the tour, Dave Williams was found dead on the band's tour bus. He had passed away from natural causes, specifically Heart Cardiomyopathy, Concentric Left Ventricular Hypertrophy. The band subsequently cancelled all public appearances.
After an extensive search the band chose Jason “Gong Jones as there new vocalist …
1.Think – creep’s in with some quick vocals then bang at the climax though no monkey noises ala disturbed or anything just clean vocals and it pretty much continues like that thru out the rest of the track…with lil climaxes of raised vocals…though reserved (no screaming)….It has its slowish moments but builds up quickly again tis to me a pretty standard opening track nothing too special.
2. Step Up – It’s on the soundtrack for the new punisher film… and starts with a good rhythm and decent vocals the chorus is catchy and I can see why its part of the punisher soundtrack… it’s a catchy anthemish kinda track, Jason seems to have a knack for writing a good chorus and in all a catchy track and a stand out of the album.
3. Numb - some hollering… a bit of slow down… track pretty much continues up and down still retains the catchyness a nice lil solo some build up towards the end… it’s a more peaceful track but still fits with the album.
4. This Life – again its rather catchy the way Jason builds up then has a lil shout then dies down about then another lil shout but…its getting a bit tiresome…
5. Nothingness – Nice intro with vocal and guitar work and some shouting…wow a shoutie song…its more aggressive and more catchy, the guitar and vocals (this is me probably being completely wrong) flirting with each other thru out the song makes it another stand out doesn’t die down at all.
6. Bringing me down – Pumped up intro, pumped up song…. Made me feel like jumping up and down at times chorus as most of them seem to be is catchy not… too repetitive (repetitive…new korn album anyone?). Jason is a pretty talented vocalist and a good song writer.
7. Love & War – it’s a slowish song with its shoutie moments, keeps to the same blue print as most of the album, shout, and downplay it with some slower calmer vocals then build it up again. Overall it isn’t a bad track… but not a standout.
8. Forget – catchy and made me want to jump up and down again at times, I’m running out of things to say as the blue print remains true…
9. Cast me aside - slow intro, builds up it uses the same blue print but the downplay is longer and more fitting to the track, its mostly a shoutie aggressive style track but done rather well and retains the ‘steam lined’ feel this album has… switching between shouts and more passive vocals well. (If that makes any sense…)
10. Killin’ me – Good intro, a catchy (yes I said it again >.<) pumped song. A standout due to the fact it uses the blue print I mentioned to full effect…A standout.
11. Hate – Jumps straight in… it’s a heavy track sounds like Rob Zombie violently fused in a back alley with David Williams’s corpse… (and yes that made no sense)…. Another standout.
Overall – It’s an alright album…nothing really special to make it standout… and a tad too generic, for drowning pool it seems like the natural progression a more steam lined sound, so I would truthfully only pick up a copy (by paying heh) if you’re a drowning pool fan…if not give it a miss there’s plenty of better albums out there.
