Dinosaur Jr.- Where You Been?
even after getting rid of original bassist Lou Barlow (who went to work with his other band Sebadoh), the indie rock trio of Dinosaur Jr. does it again in Februrary, 1993, with "Where You Been?". Dino have been a very influencial rock group, mixing grungey, loud distortion on both guitars and bass, with melodic riffs and acoustics, with vocalist and songwriter J. Mascis's drowsy yet wide-awake voice.
Line-Up:
J. Mascis- vocals, guitar
Mike Johnson- bass
Murph- drums
Track Listing:
1.) Out There
2.) Start Choppin'
3.) What Else Is New
4.) On The Way
5.) Not The Same
6.) Get Me
7.) Drawerings
8.) Hide
9.) Goin Home
10.) I Aint Saying
1.) Out There
you may have seen this song on the Wayne's World 2 soundtrack. this song is very depressing, yet energetic. the lead guitar is great, its loud, fuzzy, and extremely melodic, with a dark rhythm and bass riff, and the drums fit perfectly (although i think its a little too boring....)
2.) Start Choppin'
a very poppy, happy intro guitar riff. very everclear and third eye blind-like. the bass jumps in with a buzzy, muddy tone, yet somehoe they manage to make it fit BEAUTIFULLY in a soft, happy song like this. one of my favorite songs on this CD.
3.) What Else Is New
my favorite off this CD. think driving down an empty country road with a special someone, and grinning the whole way. thats the image this song portrays in my head. beautiful acoustics, distorted bass, and bright drums. DOWNLOAD THIS SONG
4.) On The Way
breaks right in with massive rolling drums and a fuzzy guitar riff attacking the speakers. this song is very upbeat and fast, with a deep, melodic, and harmonized (vocally) chorus. another great song.
5.) Not The Same
darkest and most depressing song on the album. almost seems out of place. a very dark appregiated guitar riff, and a light acoustic riff during the verse. this song has no drums at all, except for light, overdubbed booms during the main riff.
6.) Get Me
a lightly overdriven guitar riff coupled with an acoustic, light drums, and very resonating distorted bass. this song has a very southern, carefree feel to it, with a romantic flare to it. the chorus is sung with backing vocals from a girl with a pretty nice voice.
7.) Drawerings
what the hell? ok, this just bothers me. this song begins with and identical chord to Get Me, it may not SEEM like a big deal, but with these two songs next to eachother, switching between two identical intros is just wierd. i just think this song should have been placed in a different spot. but thats all beside the point. this track sounds a LOT like "get me", but with fuzzier guitar, no acoustic overdub, and no female vocals.
8.) Hide
this song begins with a distorted bass riff, very dark sound. then the bright yet fuzzy guitar comes in along with upbeat fast drums. the vocals are very strained and tired sounding, which compliment the songs upbeat feeling in a strange way.
9.) Goin Home
this song seems very out of place on this album, especially near the end where the more depressing songs are. this song starts with an acoustic riff couple with a quiet electric riff. an keyboard organ, drums, and the bass jump in. it escapes me how theyu fit a distorted bass into a clean, bright, and poppy song like this, but they did it. and i love it. the chorus also has a shakey tamborine in there. this song is good, but gets old.
10.) I aint Saying
another highlight of this CD. the squeeling intro is an awesome display of J. Mascis' guitar work. the verse has a loud acoustic with a very low-volumed, over-fuzzy guitar dubbed into the background.
now, you might think this album might not be all that lasting, with only ten songs and all. but EVERY one of these songs is great, and i would MUCH rather have 10 amazing songs than 20 mediocre songs. this is without a doubt the BEST ALBUM IVE EVER BOUGHT. plain and simple. i got it used for only $5, but i would have gladly payed $25 for this CD. its that good. a must for any alternative or indie fan. if you go to your local CD store and see the darkly colored album with the gun-wielding hitch-hiker on the cover, buy it. you will not be sorry.
