-Johnny Cash/NIN - Hurt
RollerQueen

Mineral - Parking Lot
Really? That song seems to pick up after the first verse, after he gets the "violently crying guitar" part done. "Slower" seems much more depressing.
The Zombies - Maybe After Hes Gone
Husker Du - Never Talking to You again, broken home broken heart
Morrissey - Angel, angel, down we go together

That is, IMO, one of the most uplifting songs ever written.
Eh, something about the song really saddens me, though now that I think about it, it's not really one of the saddest I've heard.

Yeah, you could look at it that way too. The wailing guitar sounds really sad to me though. I can see what you mean.
Either way you look at it, great song.

It's about an astronaut whose wife/gf doesn't like him leaving for space all the time. And I think he dies out there too. Very quiet and subdued compared to the rest of the album, which makes for a powerful contrast of moods.

I agree.
I actually think The Streets' "Dry Your Eyes" is a really sad song, mostly because you don't expect him to be able to pull it off. Radiohead's "Morning Bell" (the Kid A one) is probably the saddest song in my collection.

For a song to be truely sad, the lyrics and music have to be depressing.
For me, the Ataris' "Between You and Me" is one of the sadder songs I've ever heard (I even mentioned it a while back). Perhaps because I could truely relate to it. The music alone is not depressing, but the words are.

apart from the billions of other sad songs already mentioned, I think Happy by the Wrens is really, really sad. It's so simple but the way the tension build up and up and up, and then the (again, really simple) lyrics...the song just gets to me. It sums up having your heart broken for me. The way he sounds so sad and bitter and like he is forcing himself to hate the person he is writing about. :(

i was going to say Red House Painters - Medicine Bottle but there is only one song that has ever made me cry...
J. Frank Wilson & the Cavaliers "Last Kiss"
Oh where, oh where can my baby be,
The Lord took her away from me.
She's gone to heaven so I've got to be good,
So I can see my baby when I leave this world.
We were out on a date, in my daddy's car,
We hadn't driven very far,
There in the road, straight up ahead,
A car was stalled, the engine was dead.
I couldn't stop, so I swerved to the right,
I'll never forget the sound that night.
The screamin' tires, the bustin' glass,
The painful scream that I heard last...
When I woke up, the rain was pouring down,
There were people standin' all around.
Something warm going through my eyes,
But somehow I found my baby that night.
I lifted her head, she looked at me and said
"Hold me darlin' just a little while."
I held her close, I kissed her our last kiss,
I found the love that I knew I had missed.
Well now she's gone, even though I hold her tight,
I lost my love, my life that night.
reading it doesnt do a whole lot for me, but jeez when i hear that song i always get a lump in my throat.... :(
