View Full Version : Jim Dunlop - 'Cry Baby'
http://soundexchange2.com/ProductImages/soundexchange2_1761_4642356.gif
Quick Summary: The original wah pedal, with a very cool sound and easy to use pedal.
I bought my 'Cry Baby' (GCB-95) for £70 at my local music shop. The price is a little high but you really do pay for quality - It is very sturdy (Made from Die-Cast steel - will last for years!) and delivers that classic wah sound, used by Hendrix and many others. The wah is triggered by a switch that rests underneath the foot pedal, and a small push will trigger it. You have to get used to playing and rocking your foot at the same time (if it is your first wah) but once you get used to it it will become your favourite pedal :thumb:
Power: 9V Power supply or Battery.
Input(s): One (Instrument)
Output(s) One (Amplifier)
Rating:
Affordability: 4/5 - A little expensive
Reliability - 5/5 - Made out of Steel, will last for years.
:cool:Ability - 5/5 - The original wah! How cool is that?
Quality - 5/5 - Definitly a pedal you will use for years.
First ever review

Thanks for this review. Would you recomend this over a Vox wah? I've been meaning to buy a wah and I'm torn between a Vox and the Crybaby.

i've got the vox, and it sounds AMAZING!
the cry baby lets some of the original signal through, while the vox wah apparently "wahs" the whole signal.
the vox is quite a bit more expensive, but i really liked it over the dunlop wah

Took awhile but thanks for the info!
I think I'll go for the Vox. I've only heard good about it. Unlike the Crybaby.

you know whats awesome.....jim dunlop is my friends uncle....she said he was planning on coming up for a bit this summer, but he's been saying that for a couple years apparently....she said that the next time he'll probly actually come down to n.s. is when my friends grandma (his mom) dies
just a pretty cool fact i thought i'd put out there

The original Cry Baby is very cool and a great pedal, but if you shell out a little bit more (about £40) then you can get DimeBag signature crybaby, which has the biggest sweep i've ever heard/used :thumb: good review though

Good review but I like the VOX better. Yeah the Dime wah with the variable sweep is sweet. I want one bad.

yea the vox definately has more a sweeping range to it, the cry baby has a shorter range, i myself have had a vox for a year and it still rocks. They are a little pricier but they are worth it.

In that case you shoulda bought a distortion pedal, they're more fun****etal than a wah if u have no distortion in yo amp

Anyone know about the new Vox V848 wah? I heard it's every bit as good as the V847, but also a bit smoother and more comfortable. Kinda pricy if you ask me, but I assume that it works well for most things and has good quality tone.

Why does my Original Crybaby sound sooo trebly at the toe down position? It's bugging me. I want a quite balanced 'wah wah' sound heard in Slash or Kirk Hammett solos. Is it my distortion or something? I use a MT-2 through a Crybaby into my Marshall G15RCD.
I stick something under the heel of my crybaby so it doesn't get too quiet at the toe up position though. Kickass.

^ I've heard much about distortion not working too well with the original crybaby. Try the Dimebag CryBaby from Hell or a Vox wah; I've heard those handle distortion well

I have the beefed up version of the Dunlop Cry Baby (535Q) with 6 different settings so you can use it for bass or voice or guitar. I love it, although it get's a bit fiddly trying to find the best sounding wah range.
It cost about $400 Australian.

I've never played with a vox wah, but 2 of my firends have cry babies, and they are good, but they do have a limited range.
and they pick up radio signals and play them through the amp:angry:

Should i get a $350 535q or a $270 gcb-95? would the 535q sound the same as the gcb95 if you didn't fiddle around with the controls? I'm not sure which one to get because it's my first pedal. Also i'm trying to get that pantera type of wah, is this the right pedal to get?
I think I'm gonna go pick it up at a local music store later on this week. Its used, but works fine for $127 CDN. Nice review matt

yeah, i need a wah pedal pretty bad. its hard to play clapton without one, or just about any similar band for that matter. im really short on cash, so finding a cheap good one is hard. i guess ill get like, a 60$ one. I also want to play some early zeppelin type songs. what should i get?

the Crybaby is a VERY nice wah, but the sweep range is way to short for me, I get from one end to the other way to quickly.

Has anyone played the Jim Dunlop Cry Baby Classic? If so what are your thoughts. I got one yesterday because Kirk Hammett and Jimi Hendrix use it and I'm a big Kirk Hammett fan. Would I be better off with a vox wah? I would also like to hear some tips on wah or just general info. More importantly I have a question. I haven't tried it with my MT-2 boss dist pedal yet but it seems to affect the sound no matter what. It gives more bass toe up and more treble toe down, I just want to know if it can be turned off while playing.
