Some Band history
Incubus originated in Calabasas, California in 1991, and was founded by Brandon Boyd (vocals), Michael Einzinger (guitars), Jose Pasillas II (drums) and Dirk Lance (bass). Later DJ Kilmore arrived (replacing DJ Life). After playing various shows at private and school partys, Incubus released their first album 'Fungus Amongus' in 1995. They had a hard metal sound with small elements of funk and jazz, which was developed further with the CD 'S.C.I.E.N.C.E' in 1997. The 1999 album 'Make yourself' marked a kind of breakthrough for the band, as they got more recognised by the public (mostly because of the song Drive, which had a lot of airplay). The album was also less metal, and more mellow. With some kind of punk twist and different influences. This was taken further with 'Morning View', released in 2001. A very mellow and good mooded album. With a lot of 'spheric' tunes. :) After a creative pause the follow up was released, the 2004 'A crow left of the murder'. Dirk Lance was replaced by Ben Kenney of the Roots, as Dirk left the band for yet unknown reasons in 2003.
Some general impressions
This is, as far as I know, the third official DVD Incubus released. It features a full length concert, the video to 'Wish you were here' and some insights on the band's time on the Morning View mansion while recording the 'Morning View' album.
First things first: The concert. The quality of the pictures and the sound (available in Stereo and DD 5.1) is very good. There are songs featured from SCIENCE, Make yourself and Morning View. The only albums not featured are Fungus Amungus and Enjoy Incubus. The concert was not recorded in a hall/club. It reminds me a bit of a classical concert. The band on stage (which is right in the middle in this case) and the listeners sitting on chairs around it. It gives the concert a special atmosphere, not bad. The pictures are clear and clean, not distorted like it was the case on "When Incubus attacks Vol. 2".
Videos/'Living on Morning View'/etc: The other features are good. You get the Original Cut of the 'Wish you were here' Video plus making of. The clips of the bands life in the Morning View Mansion are nice, and a lot of fun to watch. Sóme behind the scenes photage and photos are featured as well-But, that's about it. (see bad things for more details)
What I really like about the album:
Like I mentioned, the quality is really good. Sound and Video are great. I found it very positive that the pictures featured all band members. Sure, there is a bit more focus on Brandon Boyd as he's the lead singer. But the other band members get their equal share of time on tape. The atmosphere the DVD let's you feel is good as well. Some off the live variations are really breathtaking for me (bass variation on Glass, vocal variation on The Warmth as examples). :thumb: for that.
What was not so good:
What kinda sucks IMO is, that you have to select all clips from the "Making of Morning View" on your own. I found no way to watch them all without a break. And with about 20 clips, this can get very annoying if you want to watch them all. Plus, I have the feeling "When Incubus attacks Vol. 2" had a bit more features on it's side (more Videos, the acoustic part etc). You got a bit more for your money there.
Summary:
The DVD is worth it's money. I have not regreted to buy it. There are some drawbacks, like the better bonus stuff you got with the previous DVD. But the concert is really great and leaves no open wishes for me. If you like Incubus, this is the stuff to pick up. :)
Concert: 4/5
Bonus Material (General): 3/5
Clips of Morning View: 3.5/5
Overall Rating: 4/5 :thumb:
