Weezer- Video Capture Device
Treasures From the Vault 1991-2002
This is Weezer's DVD, full of music videos, live stuff, commericials, early footage, and just general messing around. It is awesome. Karl (the band's webmaster/cameraman/guitar tech/all around cool guy) has spent a lot of time putting this together, and it all works very well.
The layout is simple. There are only a few menus so it's pretty much impossible to get confused. Upon loading up you have three choices: Play All, Reverse Order, and Scene Selection. While I imagine "Play All" and "Reverse Order" might be fun at 'Weezer Parties', there is over three hours of footage on the disc so I've been sticking with Scene Selection for now.
The videos are divided into 4 sections:
Videos
Documentary, B-Roll, and Live Stuff
Raw Nuggets
TV Advertisements
There is also a pretty funny Credits roll and a special message from Karl, as well as a menu where you can turn the commentary on and off. I'm going to review the 4 sections seperately.
Videos
They're all here, and it's rad. There will probably be a few videos that you haven't seen before such as the videos for the songs "Pink Triangle", "Photograph", and "Slob." Plus, all of the videos (except for the Mexican Wedding Version of Island in the Sun) feature commentary from Brian, Pat, Scott, and Karl (no Rivers?), and it's pretty funny, especially for the videos for "Buddy Holly" and "The Good Life".
Documentary, B-Roll, and Live Stuff
Kind of a mixed bag, in my opinion. Some of the B-Roll stuff is alright, but not too much different from the videos. There is also some footage of the guys just messing around, some of which is pretty good, some of which... er... isn't. There are also some pretty funny interviews with the band.
The real treasures in this section are the live stuff, and the documentaries. Watching the band record the Blue, Pink, and Green albums is mindblowingly awesome, as well as seeing them demo songs for their new album. The live stuff is great as well. Especially touching is the acoustic version of 'Mykel and Carli' at their memorial concert.
The commentary is a little sporadic in this section, some parts I think would be interesting with it, some I don't think need it. Still quite funny tho.
Raw Nuggets
This is just cool. Watching Rivers scream out "I am not the Answer Man" at the age of 19 in the pre-Weezer band 60 Wrong Sausages is sweet, as well as the early shows they did before they were signed. The acoustic version of the Sweater Song is pretty trippy too.
TV Ads
Not much to say here. If you like watching CD commercials, you'll be right at home.
And that's pretty much it. The only gripes I have is that I wish there was more live footage, and I wish there was more commentary. But all in all, this is a great DVD and Weezer is a great band.
