Death Metal is my favorite genre, my favorites are:
Atheist
Cynic
Gorguts
Immolation
SUFFOCATION!
Theory In practice
Carcass
Strange that none has mentioned Suffocation, they are the true gods of death metal and really has no comparison in the brutal technical death metal genre!

O hell ya! I forgot all about Carcass and Hypocrisy! What about Dead Horse! I used to be so into death metal, but then I got more into hardcore and then sorta mixed them and started listening to them all and also grindcore.

I recently bought the Gorguts disc "from wisdom to hate". I love the instrumentals on the cd however i haven't really bonded with the style of singing. This is basically my first venture into the death metal genre, do most bands growl so much?
I think if i could get maynard to sing for gorguts I would absolutely love them.

I like death metal, but like 555 said, I don't really dig all the growling sh*t. Death, Obituary, & Atheist are my favorites, but I keep around some other miscellaneous stuff for the occasional listen. Maybe what's his name is right. Maybe it'll grow on me eventually. ;)

He contacted me on my guestbook for my page so we started talking on the mail, he is a really nice guy. He has sung for westlife and someother equally horrible band. He is still playing bass but more latin sambe stuff or whatever, A **** shame for him to waste his talent like that! Atheist might reunite but I doubt they use Tony Choy for this for Kelly Shaefer didn't ant to bring in that pop **** into atheist as he said, well I hope he starts playing some good **** and that things work out for him for he was completely open in ou conversation and very nice eventhough he never talked to me before.

My guess is as good as anyones but they have theese genres in them:
Gordian Knot : Fusion, Classical, Ambient, Progressive rock/metal
Spastic Ink : Fusion, progressive rock/metal, classical & fusion-cartoon
In short I would label them :
GK: progressive rock
SI: Fusion
but I really have no clue.

new additions:
Arch Enemy "Stigmata"
Dimmu Borgir "Puritanical Euphoric Misanthropia"
Meshuggah "Rare Trax"
Malevolent Creation "Envenomed"
few little facts i thought id throw in:
Trey Azagthoth (Morbid Angel) wrote Angel Of Disease (Covenant...track 7) and Invocation Of The Continual One (Formulas Fatal To The Flesh....track 11) when he was 19 years old in 1984, thus proving our supreme inferiority......**** him

Download Cognitive lust for mutilation or Deranged Epidemic
Otherbands that have a pretty insane attitude:
Kataklysm - Elder God
Cryptopsy - Phobophile
Devourment - Chocking on bile
Deranged - Cum on Command
And the more sophisticated and completely genious Suffocation -

origins drummer.. i swear, is not human. the guy is so amazing live.
i love death metal, black metal, doom metal, most of the extreme metal types. i'm still getting heavy into the genre and i've found a lot of bands that i really enjoy but i have to say if i were hard pressed to pick a favorite it would have to be nile. every cd of theirs i fell in love with.. but black seeds of vengeance absolutely slaughtered. greaaaat cd.
morbid angel is another favorite, of course. how could they not be? i enjoy seeing them live, always.
i also enjoy black metal quite a bit. some of it is absurd but it's such an awesome genre to me that i can't really cancel it out.
i'm not going to segregate which bands belong in which categories but some names i listen to more frequently that fit in any heavier category include nile, morbid angel, the haunted, burzum, autumn leaves, cephalic carnage, origin, emperor, burnt by the sun, disgorge, gorgasm, limbonic art, napalm death, pig destroyer, mortician, mastadon, goatwhore, dark funeral, opeth, zyklon, cannibal corpse, hypocrisy, cryptopsy, immolation, nasum, my dying bride, skinless.. lord this list could go on.
in short, the genre is wonderful to me.
anybody have any suggestions of something i should give a listen to?

nile, burzum, disgorge, gorgasm, cryptopsy, immolation... are among my favorites so you seem to know your ****!
The ones you didn't list that fits in to that style(s) are :
Gorguts
Suffocation
Autopsy
Carcass
Cenotaph(mex)
Deranged
Hate Eternal
Incantation - in the Immolation style
Kataklysm(I prefer old)
Necrophagist
Pessimist
You have probably heard most of them but for me theese bands are essential, especially Gorguts, Suffocation, Carcass & Cenotaph.

yeah Possessed was the first to do a full length. i believe Demigod is around that era also....Slayer....i ****ing hate when people relate them to death metal. they are nothing like it. Slayer, Sepultura, Megadeth, and Anthrax originated thrash metal.

That song is easy one of the ten best DM songs ever Carcass - Corporal Jigsore Quadray is pretty badass too.
So what is you guys favorite sub-genre in DM? I love Dark, Brutal & Technical death, what are your favorites?

i don't really have a fav subgenre in DM it really depends on each individual song. something in between technical and brutal death is what i could say i like the most

my favorite would have to be the mystical, sort of spiritual/enchanted stuff. i think thats the coolest thing ever:
Morbid Angel
Nile
Kataklysm
anyone know any bands that are equally good musicians and write about similar stuff?
goremetal is amusing also....exhumed, CC, mortician, etc

Luck... I met this guy from sweden on DC and we became very good internet friends and he spend alot of his time downloading death metal so I grab whatever I like from him and that is alot of stuff.
Then I usually look after new albums and either buy them or download them from whoever has them "mirc, Audiogalaxy, DC".
And I also try to download most albums from the KCUF death metal radio show since almost all of them kickass and there are very many rare albums there too be found so it is a good referance.
However there are people who has about 6000 albums so I'm not done yet...

Well trey is probably top 3 best guitar players in DM but they Darkness of immolation is in another Dimension, Morbid writes pretty catchy and pretty good songs but Immolation grabs you by the balls and brings in total darkness and incredible power that still is unmatched. Just listen to Close to a world below or I fell nothing, Immolation have stronger lyrics too and ALOT better vocals.
Well that is my on things anyway, Do you like Suffocation? Doug Cerrito write some really badass songs on the hate eternal album that really dominated, Suffocation where even better so they are probably top 3 ever band too.

Alright looks we need something new too talk about and vocals are always interesting in this particular genre so here is my question:
Does the death metal vocals ruin the genre or are they essential to the music? I have heard lot of non deathheads that likes the music but hate the vocals and people who loves the genre often like to complain about many vocalists like Mike DiSalvio(Cryptopsy), Lord Worm (Cryptopsy, he rules), Corpsegrinder (Cannibal Corpse) and so forth.
So would you prefer death metal with or without the vocals?
nrvsreck
03-17-2002, 08:04 AM
I think the growling sh*t is an acquired taste. I've always loved the music, but hated the vocals until I recently started forcing myself to listen to more of it. After a while it grows on you. It fits the music. There is a band though, let's see... oh yes, Dying Fetus. The guy doing the vocals there goes a bit too far in my opinion. Sounds like he's trying to croak the lyrics rather than growl. Sounds kind of ridiculous, but I'll keep listening and maybe that'll grow on me too.
mutilator
03-17-2002, 09:02 AM
the vocals are essential IMO!
just what are you talking about nrvsreck? Dying fetus vocalist has one of the best vocals in the business.

xAzagthothx

definately with the vocals. would morbid angel be morbid angel w/o Dave Vincent or Steve Tucker? no. the singing definately is essetial....and an acquired taste. ive liked it since the beginning.
there are some i dont like....who are bland. i really dont like corpsegrinder from CC...or the dude from Mortician.

I like death metal. But I tend to shy away from most bands. Mostly because they play songs super fast all the time. So it's like, you hear one song, you heard'em all.
What I like are the death metal bands that slow down sometimes and play that really low gutwrenching groove breakdown thing. (Carcass's SwanSong album is killer. Like some crossbreed of old school metal grooves combined with that killer death metal guitar tone)
Anyways, here's the bands that I like, or am getting into.
Death Metal
Carcass
Slayer
Suffocation
Dying Fetus
Testament (Technically bay area thrash)
Carnal Forge
Converge (I've heard they're hardcore, but the song I downloaded suggests otherwise)
Also, here's some other underground bands that I like/love/getting into.
Symphony X
Opeth (In my top three bands)
Nevermore
Nothingface (Not sure if this qualifies as underground anymore... Also in my top three bands)
Gardenian (A dude from another message board suggested them to me. Awesome band)
Shadows Fall (Straight up heavy metal)
Lamb Of God
Amorphis
Therion
The Haunted
Samael
Sentenced
Overkill
Mushroomhead (Again... Not sure if this qualifies as underground anymore)
Ivory Tower (Underground underground. Definitely progressive metal)
Dog Fashion Disco (Evil circus music. After listening to them, you get the feeling these dudes are seriously ****ed up)
Pissing Razors
Raging Speedhorn
Entombed
Dimmu Borgir
Arch Enemy (I've only heard the songs from their new album, Wages Of Sin. But ****! That new vocalist has one helluva set of pipes!)
Kovenant (Same friend to recommended Gardenian to me. The singer has, like, 5 different voices. And they sound like a Transformer is singing)
Emperor (Only downloaded one song so far, but it was cool)
Grave

That album got many haters and lovers and most people either praise it or loath it. Obscura is great... it's so different from every other death metal album out there. Luc Lemay rules.
Anyways.. hmm... Hypocrisy is a good DM band with variation. They probably have more variation than any other band death metal band out there... There's gonna be a lot of Catch 22 hating, but I think it's a great album... just good for a change.
and to the subject before... yeah, the vocals are essential... You can't have such extreme music then have some queer like Hansi singing.

Yeah, I just heard some more Dying Fetus stuff yesterday and it's **** good. I heard just one of their songs a week or so ago and his voice was so low and kind of muted that it sounded like sh*t.

Necrophagia? From the song I have heard they hardly even use solos, maybe if you said Necrophagist I could agree but I might just have missed out on Necrophagia but considering their style I seriously doubt it.

Two good songs:
Foul Body Autopsy (This one is tabbed for both bass & guitar)
Fermented Offal Discharge
I'm not sure if he is in Trey class but his solos are very solid and beutifull so maybe but Trey is alot crazier.
Paul Masvidal of Cynic is my bet on guys who can compete with Trey and maybe Doug Cerrito and not to forgett the Atheist guys.

Take the avarage Suffocation song and compare it to DT and you will understand why DT does not count as death metal. The only good thing about DT is the musicianship that is excellent apart from that they are pretty bad. I prefer Cynic that unlike DT realised that playing only to show off is pointless but Cynic is actually more technical than DT so check them out.

Deat metal is a way of escape, the deep throat vocals and loud, fast and heavy drumming, screaming guitars and spine chilling samples. Nothing in this world could ever make anyone feel better!
I like
Metallica(yeah I know not exactly Death Metal but Lars Ulrich is my idol he is my God, and yes I have met him)
Acid Bath
Mudvayne
SlipKnot
System Of A Down
Pantera
Sepultura
Brutal Truth
Cannibal Corpse
Carcass
Black Sabbath
Coroner
Incantation
Six Feet Under
Fear Factory
:smoke:
P.S. Please brothers I beg of the to delve into the world of Acid Bath! A lil background info on the first album I bought and first album they released.
Called "When The Kite String Pops"
The front and rear covers were designed by serial killer John Wayne Gacy, also on the last song "Cassie Eats Cockroaches" there are samples of Gacy screaming on his way being led to the execution chamber! As well as an intro a sample from the movie :"A Clockwork Orange" (A MUST SEE)Sit at listen, you will be spellbound!

I love heavy ****, like arch enemy (enemy within) catharsis (exterminating angel) carcass (heartwork) nasum (shadows). stuff like that. I think that guy who wrote about linkin park being hardcore is really ****in outta place here, but honestly, bands like cannible corpse arent as hard as slipknot. I mean, sure, cannible corpse are a lot more threatening, but they dont sound heavy, they just sound low. in flames and slipknot are heavier then morbid angel, simply because when you turn it up the ground shakes and you get pissed off.

What about any european black metal?
Marduk
Mayhem
Dark Funeral
Darkthrone
Melechesh
Angel Corpse
Immortal
Enslaved
Burzum
Cradle of Filth
Blood Staind Dusk(American black metal but still really good)
Some of the more popular death metal bands are pretty good too.
Morbid Angel
Deicide
Death
Ouija
Lucifer
Basically anything extremely heavy and unholy. I actaully get to see Cannible Corpse and Dark Funeral this weekend in Detroit. Anybody else going to see that tour?

Yeah, I've really been getting into northern European Black Metal (and it's descendents):
Arcane Sun (Irish band; I absolutely love this!)
Frozen Shadows
Asgaard
At the Gates
Siebenburgen
Nefandus
Mayhem
Emperor
Diachronia
Dunkelgrafen
Contempt
Crimson Moonlight
Dark Funeral
Bishop of Hexen
...probably at least a dozen others... Yeah, I had to actually look in my music directory to get the names of most of these bands. I've been collecting new stuff so fast I can't remember even a quarter of the bands' names! Black Metal has really become my favorite genre followed closely by Death Metal.

I know all of the solo's on the Formula's cd are improvised, I read in a few interviews.. but about the scales I have no idea, but from the tabs i have looked at i'm guessing anything from Harmonic Minor? and I know he uses Diatonic scales almost every metal guitarist uses those instead of pentatonics....i can't exactly dissect his playing but he probably uses those scales, maybe like the Phrygian, Dorian, Major, Minor Diatonics?
xAzagthothx
03-28-2002, 07:11 PM
yeah...ive read that too. but in my live video...he pulls all the solos off near perfection w/ a little live improvisation. he definately doesnt just up and play em. he has a plan in his head....and from the tabs it looks like hes working in some scale. his phrasing is just so odd...and he sounds so frenetic. its so amazing.
and listen to the **** from the Love Of Lava cd......yikes

just cuz the guys singing about killing crap and raping doenst make it heavy. Slipknot are just a bunch of whiners and george fischer could kick my ***, but slipknot makes music that sounds heavier (faster, more bass crunches, more building up). morbid angel and cannible corpse are both underproduced and dont use vocals to build up like slipknot. it doesnt matter though since meshuggah and catharsis are heavier then all of them put together.

I did consider that quote from slipknot, but honestly there arent many like that. most of there songs are whining about how 'hardcore' slipknot is and the listener is just a burden and such. Morbid angel may not be a band heavy in lyrics of rape and death, but there type of music in general (slow death metal). And without a doubt those bands also use the least amount of build up in the song vocally. Not that all there songs are bad or arent heavy, angel of disease is heavier then wait and bleed, but most of what i heard from them is slow and boring (IE not heavy). Niles **** good tho
