Does anyone know if Discordance Axis is broken up?
I was looking at some of their reviews on amazon, and someone said someting like "this is their final release, but it is amazing". Anyone know anything about that?
EDIT
Nevermind, they did break up :(
This band rules! I'm kinda bummed out that they won't be making more material.
It kinda reminds me of Pig Destroyer, but with more high pitched vocals, which I love. Corporal, do you know any bands like this? I think it's the production and vocals I like the most. I just love high pitched screams, and clear-ish production.

The vocals are too loud and kind of screechy, but they are decent. The guitars and drums really need to be boosted up.
The more I listen, the more the vocals bug me. Turn them down and try to work out that 'screechy' edge to them.

I need some help from my fellow guitarists. I know very little theory and the guitar forum wouldn't be too helpful since this is kind of a specific subject.
I am trying to start a black/death solo project once I get a mic for my computer. I am going to record the guitar and bass parts(possibly vocals :p) then probably send them to someone on these boards to work out the drums. Now, this is really my first attempt at black or death metal. I have made riffs and things that I think sound good, but I am at a roadblock, so to speak, and I can't seem to come up with anything else. Just so you know, I am going for a technical almost melo-death sound, possibly much like a more brutal version of Opeth with hints of black metal picking thrown in.
Now, to get to the point finally; What kind of scales and progressions are commonly used in black/death metal?
I know many bands seems to played in a A harmonic minor scale, but use the 5th note(E) and the root note. E is treated as if it were a minor, even though, according the scale, it should be treated as a major. I know that a phygian E scale is also used quite a bit. I know there must be more tricks and scales that I just don't know, which is why I'm here.
Many of you will say somehting like, 'play whatever sounds good', and I have been told that many times. I know that all these great death metal bands must know what they are doing, and play around with scales and progressions they already know in order to get the right sound. I highly doubt that they just pick up a guitar and play 'whatever sounds good'. Any help would appreciated.
I'm sorry that I wrote so much, ranted, went off topic and whatnot. But it's 3:15AM and I am tired of searching for information online. Thanks in advance for any info.

Welcome to the world of creating your own music.
Now, to get to the point finally; What kind of scales and progressions are commonly used in black/death metal?
Write what you think sounds good. That's far more important than scales (Especially in the riffs themselves). If you want to write a solo based on theory, that's different.

I actually do pick it up and play what sounds good. If it's your thing, by all means use scales, though they AREN'T NECESSARY to write good music. I wish I had more theory in my background, though.
It sounds like you know what scales you want to use, but just haven't. Also, you don't need to do the same thing as everyone else. Find a scale you like and use it. Scales shouldn't be restricted to a genre. I wrote a lead/melody riff (when I was stuck and couldn't think of ideas) off of an Indian scale. It fits great and sounds original.
Hopefully this is slightly helpful. I can't really say much except just start writing and recording. Chances are you won't be happy with a lot of it, but keep with it and keep writing. Eventually you'll find out how you like doing it and what works for you.
I also recommend doing a cover to get used to your equiptment and to get into the routine of recording a song.
One Step Beyond
09-02-2005, 02:52 AM
I've written things before with teh various bands I have been in, but they were always punk based, which is written very differently.
I am wanting my music to make sense when read. I get annoyed with music that I can't make sense of when i try to learn it, so I don't want to do that. Knowing some scales just kind of give me a guide, I don't stick to them, they just show me some common intervals and such.
Recording a cover sounds like a good idea, and it would probably help me notice how certain songs are played better. I tend to only learn a riff or two of a song before I move on, so I don't always get a good idea of how the song was written.
Thanks!
Now, if anyone else has input, I'm still open :p

Japanese scales? I've never even heard of that, could you link me perhaps?
I was looking through Opeth tabs and I figured I was overlooking something obvious. They seem to use mainly one scale, which is the harmonic minor scales but the root note seems to change for various songs, but they always choose one of minor notes in the scale (except in the case of playing in A minor, where they use a E minor). They also switch the modes quite often during every song. I was playing around with this and I made quite lick sthat I like. This should help me get over 'writers block' much easier.

in Death metal they mainly use the diminished scale (1, b2, b3, 4, b5, b6, b7) and neo-classical bands use the harmonic minor scale (1, 2, b3, 4, 5, b6, 7). Some however use a combination of both  The only notes metallers don't generally use is the major 3rd and the major 6th, that would be too happy in the world of depressing heavy metal.

I think you mean 1, 2, b3, 4, 5 b6, #7
Harmonic minor is just the natural minor with a #7. You described the natural minor.
The harmonic minor doesn't have a #7, it has a major 7 (as opposed to the minor 7 - same as b7 - from the natural minor). So the 7th is half a step sharper than in the natural minor, but it's written as 1, 2, b3, 4, 5, b6, 7.
in Death metal they mainly use the diminished scale (1, b2, b3, 4, b5, b6, b7) and neo-classical bands use the harmonic minor scale (1, 2, b3, 4, 5, b6, 7). NP Gorguts - Inverted.
When people use the word neo-classical describing metal bands it's actually wrong. Neo-classical is stuff like Stravinsky, classical music that takes well-known classical melodies but uses dischords and crazy time signatures to create the ugly bastard mutations of these well-known melodies.
There aren't any really any set rules as to what scales/notes to use. Like Manuscriptreplica said it's an idea to avoid major intervals if you are trying to create something depressing; but then again a major 6th can have a really nice melodic effect if you are going for that. Although it's really down to the individual, I really like hearing a minor sixth in a melody, I think it gives a nice effect.

When people use the word neo-classical describing metal bands it's actually wrong.
how would you describe bands like Necrophagist, then? Who use the same scales and structure as classical songs?
I think you mean 1, 2, b3, 4, 5 b6, #7
Harmonic minor is just the natural minor with a #7. You described the natural minor.
There's no such thing as a #7, that would be the 1.

I've never really heard anyone use another word for it; if you want to be technically correct then it'd be something like "hfusion between classical melodies and death metal". Just continue to use neo-classical, it might not be technically correct but everyone will know what you mean; only people who are really anal like me bother about people using it like that.
Favourite DM guitarist is a hard question, I'd probably go with Chuck though.

Neo classical means taking ideas from classical music and putting it to use in a modern context.
That could mean anything from Necrophagist to Stravinsky.

Maybe I'm just too nazi with my genre classifications, but I've always went by the definition I learned for neo-classical. Basically, think of the old classical melodies as the building blocks for the music, and the irregular metres, polyrhythms, more complex harmony, use of dissonance (especially tritones) to give these melodies a new feel while maintaning a slight similarity to the original. I wouldn't really bring Necrophagist etc. under this classification, but maybe that's just me.
In your opinion, who is the best DM guitarist?
Martin Halfdan was really good when he was in Necrophobic, but I'm going with Terrance Hobbs of Suffocation. He blew me away when I saw them at Wacken last month.

Just got back from my first ever death metal gig, really enjoyed myself :D
The lineup was Sons Of Slaughter/Incantation/Nile, all the bands were good. Sons Of Slaughter were pretty cool to see live because I know the guitarist from the band the formed after the split of. They had some tapping in their riffs and stuff which was a nice touch but they were pretty one-sided. Incantation were absolutely awesome, they had a nice mix of fast death metal and slow death metal. Nile were definately on a hit tonight, I really enjoyed their set; especially when they played 'User-Maat-Re' followed by 'The Burning Pits of the Duat'.

I have Le Grande Danse Macabre, is it considered any good by Marduk fans?
I never listened to it all that much

Calm down, guys. We're all peaceful satan worshippers here, we all like to impale pig heads, so let's be friends, aight?
If I ever saw Maniac, I'd probably either worship him cause he fronted Mayhem, or kick him in the balls for not being able to write songs...
He sang the old stuff OK though...not as good as Atilla or Dead, but alright.

Man, I checked out Destroyer 666's "Cold Steel For An Iron Age". Awesome stuff. Kinda progressive. Kinda reminds me of my band, the song writing style. But they do it alot better. But you probably knew that :p

Cold Steel For An Iron Age is the album I have, and I likes it. I was going to order some more, but as you may have read, the webstore I planned on ordering from is suddenly no longer stocking them.
Apparently they have an EP called ..Of Wolves, Women and War, which I rather want to hear just based on the name.

By the way: Marduk Question:
Heaven shall burn... when we are gathered (€6.99)
or
Those of the unlight (€9.99) ?
Those Of The Unlight. But they're two totally different sounds. Those Of The Unlight is more "old school", a bit more atmospheric. Heaven Shall Burn is all out fast, aggressive, balls-to-the-wall stuff to listen to when you're pissed and want something to match your mood.
I have Le Grande Danse Macabre, is it considered any good by Marduk fans?

It's ok. It's a lot better than Panzer Division. The songs are much better written. If I had to rate it I'd probably say it's about a 7-7.5/10.

Bartender, if you're trying to order from Supernal and have only looked on the website, call them to see if they still have it. I had the same problem with the Arghoslent CD I bought (it wasn't listed on the website, but in fact they did have it). Apparently they made some changes to the website and some CDs did not appear there after the changes took place, or something. Anyway, check with them first, they may have it.

I second that. At least Iowa has a few good tracks. "The Subliminal Verses" is really the first time they've really put together a good album, which threatens a lot of people who wrote the band off as mere bull****.
That's why the last year or two since that album came out we've seen so much debate about Slipknot on the internet. The old fans like the newest album because it kicks arse, as well as winning a whole legion of new fans.

The place was really small, so some people had chest pains/ear pains from the volume of the music, and apparently the crowd was very violent - not in a nasty way, but a few (three or so) people got various bits of themselves stood on, or cut, or something. The most serious lasting injury was that a guy had his shirt torn, though. Nothing serious.
