does anyone else agree that grindcore is the missing link between hardcore punk and death metal?

I mean some of Nepalm death andn pig destroyer's stuff is nearly punk and some is nearly death
I thought that was basically the definition.

And it only started cos some girl nicked your avatar! So we thought we'd try to have a whole thread of baphomets. Then people took it seriously and started asking what they had to do to join! I even did an entrance exam - wonder if I can find it.

And back on topic: someone was asking whether grindcore was the link between hardcore punk and death metal. Well, it's more a case of convergence than a direct link. Both styles evolved separately (listen to the difference between Scum and Scream Bloody Gore) but as death metal got more extreme and grind got more complex and better produced they started to sound more similar. There's quite a few examples of grind bands going Death and Death bands going grind too.

I'm guessing stuff like Lucifer. Death metal, but with elements of black metal. Really not a great term since there are so many bands that blur the lines between death and black metal. I'll upload a couple Lucifer tracks in a minute.

Farmakon are incredibly similar to opeth, its just they took a funk approach to that style of music.

Disillusion are kind of close to Opeth indeed, and 30 times the band opeth could ever dream of being.

I wanted to get an album by a band called Folk Earth, but they only accept hidden cash sent to the Ukraine. Which is really annoying, because its 12 guys who have never met, they just sent all of their parts into a studio to be mixed.

Well, I won't argue because I have neve been able to find any Disillusion albums on Soulseek either. Opeth are not very good if you consider them a death or doom(they aren't close to this but people still say they are anyway) band. The only deathish thing about them is his growl.

I don't see how these guys sound like Opeth, they remind me a lot of Soilwork though. It's pretty good, but a bit too "poppy" in some senses for a death metal band. The acoustic interlude part could be considered Opeth-esque I guess. I really liked that part of the song.

I wouldnt say they're that close to Opeth either. The whole feeling/atmosphere is entirely different. Opeth are kind of darker more serious and down on earth while Disillusion sound happier (poppy :p) yet far more energetic. Still there are some hints in the riffage that remind me of Opeth. Soilwork are certainly the band they're closer to and the distorted vocals kind of remind me old Arch Enemy's...Anyway, they're a mix of a hell of a lot bands and genres (even remind me of Perfect Circle!) I dont quite like them and I hardly consider them a death band.

The vocals are annoying when he's trying to be aggressive or whatever, and come to think of it they're annoying when he sings too.

Oh yes, the vocals irritate me to death, especially the clean mellow ones and that "r" pseudo accent.

The vocals are annoying when he's trying to be aggressive or whatever, and come to think of it they're annoying when he sings too.

id say on the album, as a whole, the vocals are clean 80% of the time. hes not really a growler at all. I personally love vurtox's clean vocals, but i can see why you find them annoying also.

Drudkh rule, i like to think of them as Happy black metal haha. Just because some of the songs seem way too upbeat for black metal, yet are still definitely BM.

I decided on the best comparative band to Gorguts - Lykathea Aflame. They are both bordering on avant-garde and toss in lots of super strong melodies with the burtality as well as being quite technical. Gorguts is just more willing to go into complete dissonance.

Glen Benton (singer) is a poseur, so whatever he says about his image shouldn't be taken seriously. I don't remember the Hoffman brothers getting mad or anything anyways. Can't really be sure though, there seems to be a lot of stuff going on with Deicide right now.

The Black Metal Thread isn't that bad anymore. The Gates of Heaven is gone now (if Pesttanz is him under a new username, he is alot more helpful and less flameful now, except that post on this page.) Most of the posting in there is done by Freezing Moon, RiceMonster and Deathcrush, none of whom are dicks.

Anyway, I'm going to order some CDs, because my maths homework is too hard :upset:

Me = The Gates Of Heaven under a new username, and FVNERAL_VINDZ too. I haven't changed my attitude towards these forums and their members at all, rather I haven't come across anything lately worth flaming, except for this Bread_Douche.

Why is elitism regarded as a problem? The lack of elitists in this music relates directly to a lack of standards in Black Metal. You may complain that I am elitist (this is to everyone that complains, not Azathoth, by the way), but essentially it is just a taste in music, albeit mine is more selective. There are bands that I don't like, there are bands that I do like. There are bands that you don't like, there are bands that you do like. I express my opinion on bands that I do and don't like, and I'm sure you do the same. That is what forums are for. If there were no conflicting opinions these forums would be a lot more boring than they are.

I agree. I don't think it's a problem. If you don't like a band there should be nothing wrong with voicing your opinion. If that's considered eletist, then forums would be extremely boring.

For me, elitists are people that listen to a certain type of music, and think it's the ONLY type of music on the face of the earth that is good. And when you try to introduce a band to them, they call you a poser queer because it's not "tr00" enough(for black metal elitists anyway). They also aren't very fond of people's opinions being different from theirs.

And Pesttanz, I wasn't calling you an elitist, it's just that I went into the Black Metal thread awhile ago, and alot of people there were dicks to people asking questions. But I've been going in there lately, and people are right, the problem isn't even there anymore.

And if anyone has any Thee Plague Of Gentleman album, I'll do anything for one :D If you want to trade that for an album, heres my list, and heres my aim sn.

Yeah, those are the defining factors. Anyone with the nerve to call something mallcore, or anything mallcore that they simply don't like, just really pisses me off. Mallcore has become the new fake genre to replace nu-metal so elitists have a place to put the metal they don't want people to call metal.

I kinda... really, disagree with calling Cradle Of Filth sold out, or "mall-core". They have a sound, and in my opinion, that sound they have, just matured. Like all bands pretty much. They can't have the same sound forever. And I agree, they did get kinda bad over the years. But I think the whole Cradle Of Filth bashing thing is just a trend pretty much, because they got popular. But I'm also aware that it could be that some people just don't like the band, which is fine, but I think they're too catchy of a band to not be liked by atleast some metalheads.

Was that sarcasm? If so, it wasn't called for. Mallcore is/was a term used to slander the genre of nu-metal.

I don't call stuff I don't like "mallcore" anyways. If it's metal, I'll sometimes call it ****. Other than that, I just pass it off as something to not listen to ever again. As for non-metal stuff, I'll probably keep listening to the band until I come to the conclusion that everything they make will be something I won't like, and they'll in turn be dubbed as "teh suck".

I remember when I used to buy some CDs at FYE. They have a metal section, which sort of branches off of their pop/rock section- It is in the back of the store, in a corner with less light than the rest of the store. It's kind of spooky. :p Naturally all of the good metal albums were upwards of eighteen bucks.

I hate FYE with the fire of a thousand suns. Not only does their selection and their prices suck, at Gigantour, they were running the meet-and-greet tables, and in order to meet the band, you had to buy one of their overpriced CDs. I'm an obsessive Nevermore fan, I bought TGE the day it came out. I'm not gonna give those greedy bastards another $18 that won't go towards the band.

Ignorant how?

I already tried them, didn't like it, I'm not falling for the same **** twice.

You telling me this makes me feel the need to reprogram my entire way of thinking. I have to change the part where it says:

Not falling for the same mistake twice = Smart

to

Not falling for the same mistake twice = Ignorant.

This is clearly not the case. The chances are that I won't like the new stuff either. I'm a pretty open minded person, but calling me ignorant because I refuse to check out a band because I already did and didn't like them, that's just plain old retarded. Everyone knows that.
