I know it's not doom truely, but the terms death/doom or black/doom are generally accepted, are they not?

I used the word 'doom' the same as someone would still call suicidal black metal just 'black metal'.

 I saw something like that coming.

I'm just going by doom articles I've read on the net, like ones from http://www.doom-metal.com etc. and also, genre descriptions for the bands on Metal-Archives. Cradle of Filth isn't black metal at all, whereas bands like Evoken are generally classed as death/doom, so I think there's more sense in using 'doom' as a general term for those sort of bands, than there is in calling Cradle of Filth 'black metal'.

I wish I could afford to pay for all the CDs I want, but I really can't, plus I think that Virgin and HMV can live without the ridiculous £16+ I'd be paying per each one.

Cradle of Filth are A LOT closer to Darkthrone than Evoken are to St Vitus. Cradle and Darkthrone (or insert other band name here) came from the same roots and influences - in fact it was A Blaze... that really moulded Cradle. Death Doom has no roots in doom at all. It comes from Death metal and Paradise Lost "Gothic" (Or Into the Pandemonium). It literally is slowed down death metal with keyboards. It doesn't come from the Sabbath - Pentagram bloodline it is something completely different. Cradle of Filth WERE a black metal band.

Well I wish I could afford another car but I can't - I'm not going to steal one.

HMV may be able to afford it but the band can't. If my old band had released their first record when downloading and filesharing was common, there would never have been a second record. Record label rely on sales to finance further recordings. This isn't like downloading an Eminem album.

The bottom line is: You're killing the music you profess to enjoy SO STOP BEING A ****ING SCAB

Once again, I'm only going from what I've read in doom-metal/doom-death etc. articles. I used the word 'doom' as a general term. I never said anything about 'doom metal' I said 'doom', which clearly has relevence to 'doom-death' when I say it.

And you were the one that used Cradle as an example of what isn't true to the genre.

If the tables were turned here and it was me giving a telling about black metal, I would no doubt getting nonsense like "omg ur so kvlt and tr00 and nekr0!"

The bottom line is: You're killing the music you profess to enjoy SO STOP BEING A ****ING SCAB

I'm not going to stop expanding my tastes in music because I'm not financially stable enough to lash out over £16 for every piece of music I want to hear, or even the cheaper variants of the price I may find on distros.

I cannot afford to buy every CD I want to listen to.

I will buy CDs now and again like I used to, but at the moment I can't afford it. End of story.

Don't think I simply don't care about the artists; today I have decided to quit smoking simply so that more money can go towards them - this is going to be extremely hard for me.

I don't think the "if you can't afford it, you can't have it" is fair though. One day I'll get a good job that let's me afford alot more albums than I can at the moment - and all this downloading will actually pay off 'cause I'll know exactly who my money will be going towards. But as for now, I'll be downloading and buying as much as I can.

If you don't really think that's fair, then I don't know what else to say.

I'll stop now - you are defending the indefensible. Everyone who downloads knows they're stealing from the bands (even me who only downloads out of print stuff or things I already have on LP - I could always buy another copy!). Saying "Oh I'll buy it when I have enough money" is just the wrong way to go about things - you can't do that in the real world - get used to saving for the things you want.

And so I will. That's exactly why I'm giving up a habbit I am pretty attatched to, I'm already considering a Skepticism album because of what I've downloaded today.

The majority of my mp3s are of things that I would find impossible to find, or pay the extortionate prices on eBay for.

Since I am fairly new to what I'm reffering to as 'doom', and I do mean traditional, aswel as the apparantly totally non-related death/doom, black/doom and funeral/doom etc. I am only experimenting, seeing what I like and what I don't, before I use up money that I don't really have in the first place.

I'm not saying that I expect to buy everything that I download, but more artists are going to get money as a result of me downloading mp3s than if I didn't in the first place.

I rarely, if ever download. I sometimes get songs sent to me via Msn or Yousendit, but i spend all my money on cd's, so i generally do have enough money to buy the cd's i want.

I think its alot worse to download from smaller bands, like i would personally never download a track by one of the local Punk bands in England, as continually doing so would kill them. Household Name records is so poor they need the sales to keep bands touring.

I disagree actually. I understand what you're saying, but downloading can help out smaller bands. I wouldn't even be listening to black metal, power metal, or almost any metal in general if not for downloading. Downloading has helped me check out a lot of new bands, and I've bought a lot of CDs as a result of it.

Okay so head over that site I mentioned and grab the Win32 installer for Vers. 2.0.54 (the file that ends with the extension .ssi). When it's downloaded, run the program and it'll do it's stuff. When it asks for the domain and server name just type in "localhost" for both (without the quoatation marks though). Just put your own email in the email address field, and go with port 80, just put it in the default folder and stuff and let it install. When it's done installing you can start (I always restart, it works better with my computer) serving by going into Programs > Apache Webserver. To check it's working, open up your browser (a newer version of IE or Mozilla will be fine, my friend uses Opera and that works for him) and type "localhost" (or "127.0.0.1", it's the same thing) in the address bar and going to it, you should see a test page (not an error page :p). You should be able to get in by typing your own IP (http://www.whatismyip.com) aswell.

To edit stuff, you need locate the configuration file, that's at C:\Program Files\Apache Group\Apache\conf\httpd.conf. Don't play about with this unless you know what you are doing. I like to make my folder I'm serving on a hard disk where I've got more space though, so I can tell you how to change the folder you serve. Open up the previously mentioned file in MS notepad (or any text editor) and look for the bit that says DocumentRoot (about 1/4 down the file) and change the path there to the path you want to use instead. Do the same to the directory part a few lines down that says to change to the same thing as DocumentRoot.

To serve files you need to put them into the folder that you are serving. The folder you are serving is the one that is mentioned after DocumentRoot and Directory in the conf we were just looking at. To serve the files, put them in this folder.

If you want a funky host name like me, head to www.no-ip.com and set up an account, what it gives your ip a name, so when someone types in (or clicks a link) with that name then they are taken to your ip, and your ip is serving these files.

Of course you can serve html pages and make yourself a website out of this, but I wouldn't really advise it as serving on windows isn't the most stable thing in the world. Best keep it to sticking up a few mp3s and not drawing a load of attention to yourself.

I don't dismiss Achilles as mythloygy but like Jesus he was probely made into a bigger man (Like cooler not like tall) than he really was.

Mate there is no need to get angry I jsut misunderstood you. People often say general as a way to not be a so called direct attack on someone.

I wasn't angry. My whole post was made to show you that I was in fact not angry and was not even talking about specifically you.
check out this site www.jesusneverexisted.com
I can give you a few more sites such as this one if you want them.
There was a man called Jesus, but the stories about him may be greatly exagerrated. It always amuses me to see Jesus (the Christ) accepted as fact, but Gilgamesh or Achilles dismissed as mythology. :p

Also, I find I really like Intestine Baalism all of the sudden. Good stuff.
There were hundreds of men called Jesus.
What "proof" do you have?
Just wondering. I'm not being a dick or anything :p

And I just wanna share that I am a Christian. I'm a noob though, because before I went to a camp (3 weeks ago), I was an Atheist you could say. It really opened my eyes, and showed me something was out there.
Pleaser refer to the link higher up in my post.

What was it at the camp that "showed you soemthign was out there"?
He's gone off to live in the spirit of black metal?

What, is he going to go live under a bridge and scare little kids?

WTF is the "spirit of black metal"?

thank you captian obvious.

On a side note, when you first meet your roommates girlfriend and are listening to arghoslent, then she asks what youre listening to, including songtitle, it creates a hilarious experience
Especially if she's black. :p
I bought Drudkh : Autumn Aurora and its great. I also finally got my hands of Borknagar : Epic, but was slightly dissapointed.

My best metal purchase of the week was The Haunted : The Haunted Made Me Do It.
Name change? Who are you?
I haven't heard Autopsy but I have a compilation of Abcess demos (with members from autopsy).

I heard the groups are similar. If you're talking about death metal that actually has a song structure and some catchy choruses with perverted topics and horrible guitar tone, then yes I like old school death metal.
Can you upload those demos?
Okay, I will go browse their boards right now.

I love almost anything with Garm in it. I love that man. Harsh vocals over acoustics would sound so good. The only band I have heard do anything like that is From Auntumn To Ashes( ). Could you suggest any other groups who do that?
Anata do it in one song haha
So I visited my local library today, and borrowed none other than Leprosy and The Sound Of Perseverance. They also had Scream Bloody Gore, but I already have that. It was a pleasant suprise to say the least. :D
Since when do libraries have CDs? I guess I never go to libraries.
Hey guys yesterday I bought my first Cyptopsy CD. I had to choose between Blasphemy Made Flesh or And Then You'll Beg. I chose and And then.. because I prefered (doesn't mean I don't respect Lord Worms) the vocals and the production on Blasphemy would have annyoed me a bit. Doesn't mean I won't get it in the future. Well the albums is bloody good thats for sure.
Weren't you the guy who a few months ago didn't like Cryptopsy-type death metal? haha
I now OWN it: http://www.metal-archives.com/release.php?id=56361
japanese technical/melodic death metal slightly reminds me of arghoslent.
I've been looking for that! I will be getting it from you on slsk ;)
everything's changed. The mods wanted to remove the***Official*** from the threads, probably because it makes search easier. The official threads were given temporary names (eg Rock and Metal's Pink Floyd thread) and the mods are open to regulars' name suggestions.
How does it make searches easier?
Yeah I agree. Don't change the name. This thread is why I originally started posting here after lurking for a while.

I don't know what happened to Greg. He sent me an Angledeath (his band at the time) demo and some promo flyers as well as a VHS of them playing a couple small gigs. But he just disappeared. I remember talking to him on AIM a couple times. He'd kind of fallen on hard times. I haven't talked to him in ages now though. Hope everything ok with him. :(
his posts started becoming more scarce then he started talking about his newly developed LSD habits and then he disappeared haha.

Cancer has a thourough reek of corporal sell outs. I never enjoyed them.

As soon as Death Metal became a big industry, it's quality control mechanism went straight out of the window. Generic second wavers had more lucrative album deals than the real good Death bands. It just annoys me, they have a very samey and one dimensional sound.

Emperor. I would say Gorguts, but I'm waiting until next year before they are broken up in my opinion... I mean they split up in '93 after releasing 2 albums, came back with a totally new style in 98. Made 2 albums, '98 and '01. Problems I have with Dream Theater:

1) When they try to be HEAVYY!!!!! Give it up - you're 40 years old and I can listen to Thee Plague of Gentlemen when I want heavy.
2) Attempts to update sound - LBrie see above comment when trying to rap or put more aggression into your voice.
3) When Portnoy decides he wants to sing. He cant.
4) When Portnoy does the same fill he's done on every record since 1987.
5) When Rudess forgets he's a world class keys player and decides to make noises like a 70s sci-fi programme
6) When they attempt socio-political commentary
7) When they write lyrics like "Sorry you must excuse me I'm painting my own Mona Lisa"

Train of Thought was rubbish. The new one sounds pretty good although I've not really had chance to give it my full attention.
Octavarium is the only good song off it, there's plenty of stinkers on it.

Also, La Brie has sucky vocals. Some of the suckiest I've ever heard in fact.

Thats classic. Its funny because its all true.

Yeah it's pretty old. It's Iniquity - The Bullets Breath. Lyrics:

"**** the world" is what he said
And the bullet went straight through his head
A life forsaken sufficiency
Frustration, tensions warranty

With blatant fury life is expelled
From a once so livid shell

Crisp and leathery as the bones start to show
White fungi embrace the blackened skin
Larvae plunge through the stomach wall
The process of moulding begins

Skull fractured immensely from the bullets breath
Brain pulp protrudes from the wound
Invasion of flies in the stinky pink matter
Eyes excessively pruned

Lifeless yet still full of life
Death feeds the living
Death breeds the living
Formication beneath flesh and dirt
Death feeds the living
Death breeds the living

Inhale the bullet as he wishes to depart
From this world, without a clue
Worn down to the beat of a heart
And a triggered mind to undo

Carcass lie bloated under the sun
Rotting on a dusty mound
Soul condemned to a world beyond
The sand became his burial ground

There's a few bands listed under it on M-A, not many though. I came across this, don't know if it's bullshit or not though, because I haven't heard the band.

First there was hardcore. Soon, the metal kids took notice and metalcore was born. With metalcore on the fringe of mainstream music, the hardcore philosophy continues to delve deeper into the safety and seclusion of the metal underground to produce, for lack of a better term, deathcore. I know, roll your eyes, enough with the "cores", etc... Whatever you want to call this music, the U.K.'s Burning Skies are pushing hardcore, metalcore, and death metal fusion away from the American/German metalcore blueprint, a style that is on its last legs. Burning Skies is to metalcore what The Crown was to melodic death metal, harnessing the heaviest aspects of its many influences into a completely new, reinvigorated metal extreme.

Anyway, I got Left Hand Path today, waiting for it to rip. Don't know if I'll get a chance to listen all the way through because I'm going to see some local bands tonight.

Deathcore sounds smelly to me.

metalcore shares a lot with Death metal.
it's agressive, it's fast, it's technical.

the lyrics and the riffs are the things that seperates the two, so combining them with the term deathcore seems a bit weird if you ask me.

on top of that I'm getting sick of all these new genres popping up every now and then.

but I'm not really deep into metalcore so, I'm not 100 % sure.

the lyrics and the riffs are the things that seperates the two, so combining them with the term deathcore seems a bit weird if you ask me.

on top of that I'm getting sick of all these new genres popping up every now and then.

but I'm not really deep into metalcore so, I'm not 100 % sure.

The riffs in songs by bands like In Death We Rise and Dead To Fall are definately very Death Metal and not "Metalcore" more than 80% of the time, so I think a term like "Deathcore" would work for them... if only they had a shred of Hardcore influence in their music, unfortunately they don't, so I consider them American Melodic Death Metal.

Good Metalcore = Despised Icon, Botch, Deadwater Drowning, The Agony Scene, Ion Dissonance, Between the Buried and Me, Ed Gein, Fear Before the March of Flames, Glass Casket, Misery Index, The Red Chord, Tony Danza Tap Dance Extravaganza, Zao (Ok, well maybe they're just a guilty pleasure)

Most of them border on grind or take liberally from other genres. Maybe that should be a clue to most other metalcore bands.

Also, take that. And this.

It's the Deadwater Drowning EP

Does anyone have anything by this band, The End? (http://metal-archives.com/band.php?id=18352) They look awesome and I want to find some audio but soulseek is impossible because "the end" is such a common search term I get everything but. Anyone who uses Torrents or thinks they can find it elsewhere, I'll trade heavily for it.

I'll edit in the album in a minute
