I heard Nile on the radio the other day, im not really a death metal fan and am only a casual metal listener but it wasn't bad, I wouldn't buy a cd yet though.

Nile was on the radio!? Satellite or regular broadcast radio!?

Regular broadcast, they put on a special metal show on sundays on one of the rock radio stations here, it has some pretty good stuff.

EDIT: Yooo...Wait....Where are you from?...

Like I said in the past there is a rock regular broadcast radio where I live. There's a particular 2 hours show (used to be 4 hour but yes...) on Sundays (metalzone) that plays pretty underground stuff so no surprise

ow wiat, we have a tv channel that has one metal broadcast night.
not really underground stuff though, it has clips :)
srtists mainly played:
deicide
metallica
COF
Dimmu
motorhead
meshuggah

that stuff

Stoic

I'd like to see a deicide video. You have a metal/rock TV show too but is too amateurish and I think it's a disgrace.

Anyway I would appreciate if you could answer me a question which is...

What does Avant - Garde actually mean like what makes a band avant garde?

the2stranger
08-09-2005, 05:41 PM
well
avant-garde is a term most commonly used in jazz.

but the avant part means a head, a head of it's time.
doing something unique, adding unique things to the genre and being ahead of the rest by doing so.
it's quite hard to explain the real difference between avant-garde and progressive actually.
but this should give you a certain hint, I hope.

avant-garde: Arctrus, Kayo Dot

progressive: dream Theater, Symphony X

Behemoth are releasing a new EP with a couple of tracks off Demigod, couple of covers and a new track. Also, there is a video for 'Slaves Shall Serve', which they just finished shooting. I understand that the EP is only available if you catch them on the European tour, but I don't know for sure. Check out www.behemoth.pl to see for yourself (new look site by the way).

If you guys are looking for Irony Is A Dead Scene, I've got it, it's in my soulseek share (I'm azathoth666). You need to have 'Hollywood Squares' in there, that's the second best song on it.

And thanks again for the tracks, they have been so inspiring to me. I'm writing a bunch of weird songs, and that gave me so many ideas. And I haven't even really dove into Fantomas yet. I've only listened a few times. Now all I need is a good recording sound and my keyboard to be fixed (for drums), and I'll be set :thumb:

EDIT:

I was just reading the newspaper, and saw an advert, this week there is a free festival thing going on in my city.

so I might be going after all. just for Die Apokalyptischen Reiter.

DEP are technical hardcore. If you like them I could suggest a couple of similar bands. As for avant garde: Arcturus, Solefald, Age of Silence, In the Woods, Gorguts, Diabolical Masquerade. These should be good for start.

Ensiferum are more viking/folk. There's actually a thread that you might find helpful: http://www.musicianforums.com/forums/showthread.php?p=9106988#post9106988 . My suggestions would be Winterun and Suidakra

The lyrics suck. I'd try to stay away from strummed chords in this song. They sound bad and don't really fit. Try instead layering multiple guitar parts. The other sections are really nice for the most part (reminds me of Empyrium). I am undecided on the vocals. Are you forcing your voice that low? It sounds... strange. It's also off pitch a lot of the time. Overall it was pretty good.

Are we still allowed to talk about BM in here? I like this thread more, cuz I know the people. Anyway, I got Emperor's Scattered Ashes last night, cuz its a 2 disc and its the same price as a single lol, and I love it. I've never really listened to Emperor that much; I've always tried to stay away from Symphonic BM, but Emperor truly does it right. I'm not sure exactly what it is they do differently, but it rocks so much harder than other bands. The Funeral Fog cover is pretty badass too. Anyway, is the live DVD worth getting? Death - Leprosy
Obituary - Cause of Death
Entombed - Left Hand {Path
Dismember - Lie an Everflowing Stream
Immolation - Dawn of Possession

Death Metal is my favorite genre, my favorites are:

Atheist
Cynic
Gorguts
Immolation
SUFFOCATION!
Theory In practice
Carcass

Strange that none has mentioned Suffocation, they are the true gods of death metal and really has no comparison in the brutal technical death metal genre!

Don't ever say that again.

Aborted signed to Century Media if anyone is intrested. I've not heard this band, but in the same article it mentioned they were going on tour with Crytopsy and Suffocation, if I loved both Cryptospy and Suffocation would it be worth my while to check out Aborted?

ypu should check out Aborted.
it''s death metal with some stoner/trash attitude to it, it's really weird to discribe.
I saw them a while back.

the vocalist has a nice voice, reminds me a bit of the vocalist of Slayer from time ti time

Anyway, I got a bunch of CDs today:

Abbadon Incarnate - The Last Supper**
Arcturus - The Sham Mirrors
Black Funeral - Az-i-Dahak
Cryptopsy - None So Vile*
Death - The Sound Of Perseverance*
Diabolical Masquerade - Nightwork
Dissection - The Somberlain
Fullmoon - United Aryan Evil
Lykathea Aflame - Elvenefris
Ulver - Nattens Madrigal

*I already had these downloaded, but I like them so much I thought I'd get a real copy.
**Wasn't in stock, so I'm getting one of the following instead:

Diabolical Masquerade - Death's Design
Disgorge - She Lay Gutted
Gorgoroth - Under The Sign Of Hell

My first impression of Lykathea Aflame was a one of slight disappointment. I mean, they are great most of the time but sometimes the chord progressions sound way to happy. I know this is meant to be uplifting death metal, but it just sounded really offputting to me (it actually made me think of Blink182)

Arcturus are ****ing brilliant! I may just have a new favourite band. 'Star-Crossed' is such an amazing song, especially the introduction.

I've still got to give everything a few more listens before I can give my final verdict on it though.

I'm not too familiar with Gorgoroth, Disgorge and Fullmoon but the rest are with no doubt high quality albums. Arcturus are indeed brilliant, I feel guilty for discovering them just recently (along with Solefald).

As for Lykathea Aflame, think of them more as a progressive band rather than a death metal band. In other words try not to judge them from a strictly traditional death (or grind) metal background and you'll soon appreciate them. If not then no worries. Musical taste differs from person to person.

Cheers, Black Funeral are very intresting. They aren't typical black metal at all, they have kind of industrial influences on their sound but it's still really dark and atmospheric which I love. I like Fullmoon even more though, they have this primitive, hypnotic stuff going on which is what black metal is all about for me.

Your description of Black Funeral is pretty much perfect, yes. Their earlier material is nothing like that though.

And yes, Fullmoon is excellent.

I'm doing a Zyklon-B thread right now, but I'm also going into brief detail on 1349, Satyricon, Emperor, and Thorns. Most people will have heard all but Zyklon-B and Thorns though, so I'll be brief on the others.

Lots of uploading to do. :p

Children Of Bodom aren't melodic death, they are power metal with harsh vocals (or extreme power metal has been thrown around to describe them a few times).

Dark Tranquillity etc. are melodic death metal beacuse they are essentially a death metal band with alot more melody than most death metal. Both bands are pretty fast and have harsh vocals which are key parts of death metal, but melodic death metal bands incorporate more melody into their riffs and are generally less brutal and more accessible than conventional death metal. At least that's how I see it...

Doom/death is fine as long as people appreciate it for what it is.... slow atmospheric death metal. So yeah by all means check out Paradise Lost's classic debut and Gothic as well, also early MDB especially the "Thrash of Naked Limbs" EP and Turn Loose the Swans. death. I see no link between the original doom bands like Pentagram and St Vitus and funeral doom bands like Skepticism. If you listen to it, you'll hear very slow death metal riffs with gutteral vocals and keyboards.

The first two Paradise Lost albums are ace. Lost Paradise in particular is just savage, Gothic is much more diverse when they added Into The Pandemonum era Celtic Frost influences like female vocals and keyboards. Icon and Draconian Times (Shades of God sits quite uncomfortably between these two eras) are more gothic metal with more in common with Moonspell. I must say both albums have their moments.

Crap guys, I'm really liking these 'core bands I'm finding. Granted, I'm getting the most technical ones and those that are hardest to categorize but it's still great stuff. SO hectic and insane. Botch, Ion Dissonance, PsyOpus, The Red Chord, Converge, Glass Casket, Dillinger Escape Plan, The Tony Danza Tap Dance Extravaganza, and The Locust, coupled with the new Between the Buried and Me album have kept me very busy.

Anybody know good sites, besides e-bay, for buying underground metal shirts? I've found www.fearshop.com which isn't too bad, but not a whole lot of stuff I'm looking for.

If I can't find any, I may get an e-bay account, but it would be easier to know sites, so share any that you know.

The Red Chord and DEP are quality bands, I didn't exspect to see the Locust in your list though.

anyone ever seen DEP live? they're just one big lump of energy on stage, their leadguitarist was so busy the entire concert he almost kicked over a speaker and was just a couple of inches away from hitting other band members in the face with the tuningkeys of his guitar.
