I only have Consuming Impulse by Pestilence, what's considered their best work?

Once Was Not, Cryptopsy's fifth studio album, was completed last week. Sébastien Marsan, at his Studio Vortex in St-Constant (Quebec, Canada), did a wondrous job of mixing and engineering. The album was mastered by UE Nastasi at Sterling Sound in New York City and features artwork by François Quévillon, Filip Ivanovic and Martin Lacroix. With eleven tracks totaling about 50 minutes, this is a concept album where every song has its own identity. We made sure to have a lot of flavors and different rhythms and tempos throughout the whole process, the variations in the tracks may surprise some of you. An exclusive Cryptopsy studio report will be featured in BW&BK #91 in August (more infos are available here). Expect Once Was Not to be released in October by Century Media Records.
I'm looking forward to this one, my first and favourite death metal band of all time. Concept albums are always fun.
I like Consuming Impulse the most out of Pestilence's discography.

True. And I'm sure that if no one knew their lyrics or their religion and just focused on the music, they'd be one of the classic underground bands.
There are a lot of bands like that. But people don't bother to even listen to them because "Oh noes...they're christian!!!!!" I personally don't care what a band sings about as long as the music sounds good.
the black dahlia murder have their new cd realeased . i listened to some songs and it sounded pretty good.
I've got their demo and Unhallowed. I got tired of them really fast though. They're one of those bands that you listen to the first time and think "Hey this is promising" but by the end of the album you're thinking "Isn't this **** over yet?"

I like some Swallow The Sun stuff, but I don't know a lot about doom metal either. Check them out if you haven't already. (I think they're more Doom-Death though, I'm not sure)
Some of my favorite Death Metal bands...
Autopsy
Cryptopsy
Suffocation
Morbid Angel
Death (I prefer the old)
Deicide
Dismember (Especially Like An Ever Flowing Stream)
Decapitated
Spawn of Possession
Gory Blister (If you haven't heard them, you should!)
Entombed (Left Hand Path \m/)
Vital Remains
I like both old school and tech death, but I like old school a bit better.
I like a lot of Black Metal too.

OK. You have to bear in mind that my tastes are quite restricted and this list will concentrate on old-school and epic doom.
In no particular order:
Solitude Aeturnus - Through the Darkest Hour (If you like Epicus then you'll love this)
Candlemass - Nightfall
Solstice - New Dark Age
St Vitus - V (I actually Prefer the self-titled debut but it's nigh on impossible to get hold of)
Trouble - The Skull
Pentagram - Day of Reckoning
Revelation - Frozen Masque
Penance - Spiritual Natural
The Obsessed - The Church Within
Count Raven - Destruction of the Void
As with the 'essential Death Metal albums' list this is a list of albums that I believe shaped the genre. They may not neccessarily be the best introduction to the genre.
If you like Epicus here are some other suggestions:
Isole - Forevermore
While Heaven Wept - Of Empires Forlorn
Other class albums:
Orodruin - Epicurean Mass
Reverend Bizarre - In the Rectory
The Gates of Slumber - The Awakening

I've only heard maybe half the album of Worlds Beyond the Veil, so I can't really compare. However, their "atmospheric sound" you hear in Worlds Beyond the Veil is just developing in Forever Advancing....Legions. These albums sound quite different from each other.
If I were you, I'd see what Toozey has to say (I haven't seen him in ages) but to me, I enjoy both albums very much.
Ah, okay. I'll still check it out.

About doom: I know some funeral doom and death/doom, but I don't really know any classic stuff, so Jondur's list will help me. I successfully have 0 albums on his list. Although, I have an album from one of the bands mentioned.
I just finished creating a list of all the old school death (late 80s - 1994) I have. There are a couple '95 albums and a couple albums/compilations that were released later, but have material/songs written/recorded in the early 90's timeframe.
Shall I post the list?

Cannibal Corpse - decent.
Immortal - ace, especially Diabolical Fullmoon Mysticism and Pure Holocaust
Venom - Personally not a huge fan, but they're very influential so I have lots of respect for them
Mayhem - Up to De Mysteriis... was great. New stuff is utter crap. Chimera was mediocre. Much better than Grand Declaration of War, but that really isn't saying much.
On the mp3 vs cd subject...I don't have anywhere near as much as I used to. I've got around 500 albums on my pc. That includes everything I actually own. I used to OWN around 600 albums, mainly cds but also a bunch of LPs and 8-tracks. But due to loss, theft, breakage and selling things for quick cash my collection has severely dwindled. I think I only own about 150 now.

For Ulver, it really depends what style you want. For their black Metal Nattens Madrigal or Bergtatt.

So disappointing, first one reminds me of In Flames a lot, Second one isnt as bad, but still doesnt even sound like dissection to me at all.
So depressing.
In Flames came to my mind too. Although Maha Kali was bad I still had hopes that the rest of the album will differ. Unfortunately, I should start getting used to the idea that old Dissection are dead. ****ing Jon and the things he's said in interviews about the dawn of a new era blah blah.

Personally I like the earlier stuff, its much thrashier and riff-based IMO. The newer stuff with Tucker on vox I like a lot though. FFttF is better than GtA and Heretic I think, but its the weirdest album they've done. GtA is great for straight ahead DM, and the second track on it is heavy as all hell. Yeah, you just have to accept the fact I never liked Opeth :p. I know how it feels when you're obsessed with band and the others cannot appreciate it as much as you but in the end of the day it's just a matter of different taste.
You should really stop worrying about not knowing so many death bands and start enjoying the proccess of finding out about them. Just giving this genre a chance means a lot, besides you've only been to it for a short period. Eventually, you'll be surprised at the amount of bands you've heard. And necrophagist might have signed with relapse but still I wouldnt call them mainstream.

He's right Slapping Penguin, I've only been at this 3 months or so; but I can join in with discussion on most of the main bands (Cryptopsy, Morbid Angel, Death, Obituary, Necrophagist, Atheist, Gorguts, Cannibal Corpse, Deicide and quite a few more) without seeming like I'm talking about stuff I don't understand. One day it'll stop seem like you are a newbie desperately trying to garner knowledge, the next it will seem like you are a death head talking to other death heads (even if they do still know alot more than you). In the meantime, just enjoy the ride.

^Well said :thumb:
Ahh, these days before I become a death head! I was swearing that I will never, ever listen music with such disgusting vocals!
After a while, I heard Human and I was shocked. I desperately started looking for bands similar to Death. Atheist were kind of kvlt for me since it took me a really long time to find a song by them. The rest is history :D.
To tell you the truth I never really liked big bands like Morbid Angel, Deicide and Cannibal Corpse and I tend to discover "classic"/essential stuff through newer and more underground bands.
By the way, have you all checked Dancin Man's thread on Esqarial? If not go NOW! http://www.musicianforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=372691. It's a shame that underground metal threads get burried quickly.

I'm finally just listening to Thorns' self titled album, pretty awesome stuff in my opinion! What do you guys think of it?
Also I recently stumbled across another really cool band, Atrophia Red Sun, it's Polish death metal, but with kind of spacy keys in it, an interesting and cool twist on the usual stuff.
Here's "Abstract" from their latest album, "Twisted Logic". Enjoy!

Indeed people need to hear this band! It's a weird mix of melodic black and melodic death metal. The production is sharpy black yet skilfuly polished, the drumming sounds grindy at times (has that wooden feeling), the riffage is mostly melodic black with melodic death passages and occasional acoustic parts and the vocals are tastefully done and sound like a slightly higher and blackier at the gates. Good definition you got there, glad you like it :). Somehow it reminds me slightly of Lykathé, though they sound very different, I listen to them both for the same reason.
I don't know why they split up, I think the main man, Schythcrawl or whatever he calls himself, has a new project called Ether. I've only heard one song from that band and didn't like it much. Relentless Abhorrence of Misery's Grievance is pretty much their full-length. The one I put up is a re-print with an added bonus track. They also have a record company-only promo, Scarred Memento. The overall production is better, however, I think the drum-production on their EP is better. This promo has as far as I know only 2 tunes, and both are available at their website;
Haunting (Their best song in my opinion)
