Well, I'm about to ask my mom to let me use her credit card to buy the CDs. I chose Anaal Nathrakh-Domine Non Es Dignus and Pig Destroyer-Terrifyer. I don't think the Pig Destroyer cover will go over too well though

I don't know, I really hope it isn't a problem. That would suck, because I want that CD so bad.

I think I'm running out of sstuff to recommend :(
I need more avant-garde myself too :p

things that I can still recommend, although they may differ quite a bit from Solefald:

Borknagar
Enslaved ( the Isa album)
and Diabolical Masquerade.

and Solefald's Neonism album has pretty much the same sound as pills against... ony the production isn't as crystal clear as on pills... and that hurts the release quite a bit IMO.
(it's not recorded typical BM style or anything, but just not as clear as pills.

I'm looking for more avant-garde stuff myself too, but the genre is quite difficult to explore.

No, it was Reflective Depths Imbide. I can't say I'm impressed but certainly it's a very interesting and atmospheric listen based on neoclassical structures. He is still a member of the band, Burning Inside, where he pushes his drumming abilities to the extreme. (Imagine him on Sounds of Perseverance, but faster, and even more nuts). Although I'm not the greatest fan of the band, I wish he would have completely stuck to his music, because he had great things coming for him. I always felt that he was being held back in Iced Earth, and I was sad to see him go, but I would have had him rather depart for a more technical, extreme band that needs a drummer like him, rather than a tv show. :-/

Kinda stupid question, probably doesn't belong here.
Well what genre are Meshuggah? Like technical thrash? I think they have some thrash elements but maybe it's just me, I really like their music, but I cannot stand the singer for some reason.
So do they have any instrumentals, or are there any other (thrash?) bands which do anything remotely similar?

Bartender
07-19-2005, 10:13 AM
I tend to just steer away from classifying them, as that inevitably provokes arguments from all quarters. I wouldn't call them thrash, though.

For similar artists, though, Mnemic and Scarve both have a Meshuggah sound to them. So, apparently, do a band called Textures, but I haven't heard them.

As for genre classifying that is indeed tough, in a way you could just be lazy about it and lump them into the progressive category just because of the drumming style alone.

If i liked the band more i could probably come up with a better genre for them than that, but every time i hear them i just think "well the drumming is top notch, but i dont like the song writing at all"

Until bands like them get more popular, there is no need to have a category. Just say "I like Meshuggah".

Meh, I'm gonna look up those bands Bartender, any recommendations?

Textures only have one album, called Polar or Polars, I think. Mnemic, I've only ever heard one song (Ghost) by them, so I can't recommend an album. I bought Scarve's Irradiant a while ago, and I think it's still the only album I've ever returned for reasons other than it's being faulty. I remember it got good reviews though, and remember that I don't really like Meshuggah's style anyway.

I really like Ominous. I th ink it's a real shame that they've never really got much attention. I interviewed Soren the guitarist after The Spectral Manifest was released - it seems that the band all live about 500 km apart!

But anyway - they're a lot more melodic than Meshuggah (and are better) but still do the polyrythmic thing.

Again I state: Meshuggah is not thrash.

Does anyone know a website where I can order or get mp3's of Repulsion's early demos?

again I state: metal-archives states them as post trash, they have some trash alements though, and not it's not simply trash, it's stated as POST trash.
that makes a whole lot of difference. post black metal, or post rock, differ a lot from thier original genres.

because I'm a lazy bum, I just call them technical death metal ( although that isn't accurate)
and I have all of thier cd's and the first few albums have quite a lot of trashy elements.

Thanks Stoic your one of the guys that I really respect on this site I hope you and I will continue to have good talks. With people talking about Death Metal subgenres I know that Necrophagist is very techniqual but is it really necessary for any one who does something a little different to make a full new sub-genre eg Tech-Death. Why not just call it Death Metal and if you discussing with somebody in depth you could say they techniqual Death Metal.

Primus is um...they're...uh...I think they're kind of one of those bands that really defy classification. I'm sure someone will come up with a genre to put them in. If you want Avant Garde get some Arcturus. Really good stuff.

Yeah someone just once told me Avant Garde is werid screwed up music not mattering how heavy they are or soft just its weridness so Bjork, Mr Bungle, I knew Arctrus was so then I thoug Primus?

Well avant garde indicates something that's ahead of it's time, so it's defining feature comes out as being that it has no defining features. Technically, anyway. Music that gets called avant garde can range through all genres, but it generally denotes music that sees itself as intelligent or complicated, as well. It's hard to describe the difference between avant garde and experimental/unclassifiable (if there even is a difference), and yet there are bands I feel safe calling experimental as opposed to avant garde, and vice versa.

Primus (though I don't like them much) are generally agreed to be very hard to classify, but I'd hesitate to call them avant garde. I don't know why, though.

Listening to diverse music I think makes you able to appreciate it better.

Styles of music I've gotten into:

Metal (Oldschool black, LLN black, oldschool death, brutal death, thrash, nu, NWOBHM, etc)

Electronica (Hardcore, ambiental, jungle, darkwave)

Reggae (Dancehall!!!, roots, dub... I also currently play in a reggae band)

Indie/Alternative/Goth/whatever (The Pixies, Melvins, Nirvana, Meat Puppets, a ton of spanish rock bands)

Country and folk music, mostly local or from south america (Bachata, my mother used to listen to artists like Selena in the car constantly so cumbia, and I forgot the name of that colombian style of folk)

Now that I think of it I've been a lot more immature in the past as far as music is concerned (and not only of course). The more music you're exposed to the more mature you become, I suppose.

I beg to differ. Metalheads are some of the most closed-minded, easy to catagorically define groups of listeners around. The amount of metal around (Encyclopedia Metallum for instance) is staggering. So many metalheads ONLY listen to metal.

I should probably introduce myself to this thread. I posted once or twice in it a while back, but that hasn't been for a while. I've been posting in the Titans of Thrash for almost since it started.

There are only categorically a couple of death metal bands I like enough to own albums by:

Death
Atheist
Sodom
At the Gates
Autopsy
Napalm Death
Destroyer 666
Possessed

Hopefully no genre nazis to jump on me here calling Sodom death or whatever...I probably don't know enough to really make a meaningful arguement here, but what I can say is that I would certainly like to expand this list, because in those bands there is so much I like.

The Atheist records are amazing and out of left field they got re-released, and I'm waiting for them in the mail. Any other bands like them? I've heard Cynic, Watchtower and nothing really has the impact of Unquestionable Presence or Piece of Time.

The genre has so much to offer, as you all know, but from what I've heard venturing outside these few bands, it all seems stale. I like the drumming on Cryptopsy for instance (the song Loathe owns - it's enough on its own) but an entire record...I don't know.

That maybe true, but I think most of us that are in that rut grow out of it with time.

The ones that do not grow out of are just douche bags trying to act cool.

Well without trying to act cool - I listen to metal 99.99% of the time. I have some jazz and a few classical CDs but I listen to them very rarely.

Maybe I will grow out of it with time but it's been 17 years so far and it's still Metal I love, no other style does it for me (not - I'm not really counting the fact that I love The Exploited and Discharge as evidence of a diverse musical taste!).

So does the fact that I make very little effort to hear music from other styles mean that I'm close-minded? Well, probably yes, but I don't care because there's hundreds of metal bands that I haven't heard and thousands of tracks that I want to get. Now and again I hear non-metal tracks that I like but when it comes to the crunch (ie in the record shop) I'm going to ignore it in favour of the new Reverend Bizarre. So, unless something comes along that I like better than metal - I'm just going to keep buying metal.

And Jon, I don't think Bobo was having a go at you. I doubt I'll ever stop loving Metal as my favourite genre either, but I think other types of music appeal to different people, you know.

It really frustrates me that I don't have enough time to hear all the music, or even the great bands, that all the genres are producing. And without the people like Jondur who breathe metal, those of us who try to be ecumenial wouldn't be able to have such a great specific knowledge to draw on.

Them: "These songs all sound the same"

Me: "Get the **** out of my car"

Sort of similar with me only it's with my house ( I can't drive :upset: ). People come over and want to play 50 Cent, Linkin Park and Eminem in my stereo. That's a big no way in my house seeing as they don't play the music I like at theirs.

So........ I've got Mithras, Ephel Duath, Sodom, Porcupine Tree, Death Machine, Bal Sagoth, Death, Rhapsody, and Nevermore cd's coming in hopefully 2-3 days. :)

Tapping the Vein

That one's enjoyable. The production is sub-par compared to other Sodom albums, but it's one of their fastest/most brutal albums to date.
