What would you call them?
I'm kind of confused about that... I mean, I know they're not Death Metal, but I have almost no idea what to call them. Because Technical Metal is kind of out I would think, unless you count weird time signatures as technical... Which is, but... Well, you know what I mean.

Oh yeah, and before I double post... Do Cryptopsy have a DVD? Because I thought I heard someone talking about one in here... And any news on the new album from them aswell?

There is a band called Textures that sounds somewhat like them. But tey have alot more melody than Meshuggah. Even some choir parts. They're not half bad either.

Not only do they play more than "2 chords," but they aren't even death metal.

Grave is good.
Almost no death metal band is just 2 chords. Most dm bands are very complex. Even CC isn't usually just 2 chords.

Eh, I could see how you could think that, with the like, 8 minute runs of instrumentals sometimes. But I think they're amazing.

Yeah, DM for me is ranked right next to classical music on technicality. Of course there will be a few bands though that aren't technical, but those bands obviously don't get far.

Tons of people absolutely love Opeth, but I just can't seem to get into them. In my opinion they're one of the most boring bands I've heard. That's just me though. I admit the songs are well written, and Akerfeldt's clean voice is cool at times, but other than that I just don't get the band.

However, I used to love them, and have definitly given them a fair chance.

Yes. It's probably my favorite LLN release that I've heard so far. I especially love Belketre's part in it; since they're my favorite LLN band. I love the dark sound they have.

Vlad Tepes = my favorite out of the two.

French black metal is great, but I need to find more bands heh.

But serioulsy, get this album. the opening track Vladimir's March is the most catchy black metal opener/song ever imo.

Dont take me wrong, I dont know any girls that play metal either. They dont do so, not because they dont have the ability. It's difficult for a girl to get into music presented as "guys' music" (=metal) and even more difficult to pick up a guitar, take it seriously and focus on it. I hope some day things change

Dancin' Man

It doesn't bother me. So long as it sounds good I don't care who's playing but females have a tendency to not put as much into their playing and therefore never become as good as males. Even in terms of songwriting although I must say I like listening to some Melissa Auf Der Maur now and again.

I don't want to sound sexist, but I agree. Theres no denying the fact that girls can play instruments just as well as men can; I just don't like female harsh vocals. When I was listening to Nuclear Death, I loved the music, but her vocals just weren't doing it for me. I do like female vocals in metal like Nightwish though.

Yeah, they're vocals are weird. Definetly alot of burping going on there  The band has to have some of the most bizzare lyrics I have ever read. Really. Go read the lyrics to When the Sun Drank the Weight of Water.

Edit: Bobo, your avatar rules. I'm listening to that album now. \m/

It takes an open mind to listen to Debussy and actually like his music. I have heard as many bands as i can find stuff by. I rarely hate music. I don't hate death metal parse, i just find it overly boring. Oh and same goes with paul hindemith or Phillip Glass.

Sickening Horror play high quality technical death and George Kollias (Nile) is the drummer: www.sickeninghorror.net (promo for download)

As for Gory Blister I'm kind of anxious about their new album since I'm not sure what direction they're willing to follow. I just hope they stick on their tech death roots and dont become "atmospheric" or something like this.

Immortal's only really good album is Diabolical Fullmoon Mysticism, the others are okay but meh. If you're looking for black metal, don't go for anything post-Pure Holocaust.

As for Marduk, they aren't the best of bands... I have Opus Nocturn and it is actually quite good. Or go for Panzer Division Marduk if you want a straight-forward blast of hatred, although the songs on that album are pretty close to sounding the same.

Or if you want something with Popeye on vocals.

Also, the riffs on DFM are way superior to the ones on those albums, in my opinion.

I really like the vocals on DFM compared to their later vocals, which can be cool at times, but for the most part sound ridiculous. Immortal is nearly a joke band.

I think Type 0 Negative suck.

Marduk's best - Opus Nocturne (I find Marduk to be one of the best raw black metal bands and I would listen to them over Mayhem anyday)
Immortal's best - At the Heart of Winter. It's melodic and technical but still raw and cold. I must admit, I hate Abbath's vocals.

To Toozey/Br3ad - I can't stand really raw prodution. If the mix is rediculously lopsided and I hear more buzz than notes, I consider it bad production and find themusic hard to listen to. Darkthrone admittedly (sp) is not the worst but I see them as right on the edge.

I just found the funniest "demo" I have ever heard.
I'm gonna upload it on here. All of the songs are on an acoustic, and the drumming is like clapping and stomping feet. It's funny as hell to me.

Uploading it right now.

That is Seth Putnam's other joke band, Impaled Northern Moonfrost.

All improv on an acoustic and the drums are clapping his hand on his knees and patting the bed for "bass drum action".

Pretty much a parody of black metal, especially with the funny song titles.

Marduk - Those Of Unlight
Immortal - Battles In The North or Pure Holocaust

The Emperor = right on the money with that statement.

All genres start to sound the same, but if you are really into finding original bands, just don't listen to the bands that sound mediocre and listen to the great ones.

Death metal and black metal does have alot of mediocre bands I believe, but there are some really great bands in each genre and they are not rare.

Yeh. I'm am yet to find a Black Metal band I have really enjoyed, and wanted to find more info. on them.

Death Metal though is one of my top genres, And I listen to many of them. Necrophagist, Anata, Immolation, some of my favorites

What bands have you heard out of black metal?

And those bands are all good too, but you have to admit some bands start to lose originality when you dive deeper into looking for bands in the genre of death metal.

From what I've heard, At the Heart of Winter is my favourite Immortal album. It even has good cover art.

As people have said, the vocals aren't the greatest, but I'm not listening to it for the vocals; I'm listening for the guitars.

And yeah, I'm aware I'm about a page late. I wasn't sure what to quote to respond to.

A jazzmetal song completed with vocals. More clean vocals than growling and more jazzy than metal but still metal. (The Beast Out of the Sea)

< Whore

Nile - The new album si their best work. Best production they've had and the songs are the most listenable as they don't get boring nearly as fast as they did on previous releases.

Cradle of Filth is not black metal.
The Black Dhalia Murder is melodic death metal
Slayer is thrash metal

Also this thread is discussion for all extreme metal : black, death, doom, grind etc etc

Nice list I must say.

Coroner are crazy and their riffage is quite common in modern technical death. Currently out of the albums I've heard (RIP, Grin, Mental Vortex) my favourite is RIP. As for Pestilence, I've heard 3 of their albums but they dont excite me that much (so far at least). I also dislike the production on Spheres.

You have to hear Punishment for Decadence. Probably the 2nd best thrash record they released (after RIP)

I talked to him on Slsk a few times. We always got along pretty well. I knew he knew more than I did and was ready to learn plus he liked mostly good bands and he didn't start recommending crap ones (like that bad Brazillian death metal) until I had established myself as someone who knew something about metal. Plus we ganged up on Eleventeen together (more like I hopped on the trash eleventeen bandwagon before everyone else)

I've been a bit depressed lately and surprisingly I felt like listening to Alice in Chains - Dirt after three or so years. It's a dark, suffocating and truly depressive album...

Nine Inch Nails-The Downward Spiral is the greatest album for that kind of stuff if you ask me. When I was depressed for about a year, I listened to that... It didn't help me get out of depression really, but I don't know, I jsut loved listening to it.

I guess I just wanted to sit around and mope alot to get over it. :/

But I hope you get better, it took me about a year to do that. And it didn't really happen over time for me either like I thougth it would. I just kinda realized something one day, and I was... happy.
