Pantera and Slayer heavier than Cryptopsy and Bloodbath?

Read-----> HAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH!

that's the second funniest thing I've heard apart from people calling Cradle Of Filth and Slipknot death metal :D

don't get me wrong, I love Slayer with all the piece of coal i have for a heart, but they pale into comparison with the two aforementioned DM bands.

and on that note, has anyone else heard Bloodbath? they are a kind of supergroup, containing members from bands that are quite known in extreme metal. Mike Akerfeldt for one is the singer, so that should please Opeth fans, but they ain't nowt like Opeth.

Going back to the fast double bass question and ignoring exhortations to listen to two albums that I bought 10 years ago and another that is a pale reflection of what was once the greatest band ever to walk the planet, try some Absu - that guy (Prosciptor) really does have some of the fastest feet I've ever heard and I've heard a lot!

Also, any Demilich fans? I haven't seen anyone say anything about them either.

"Heaviness" isn't what it's all about. A band like Crowbar are extremely heavy but Napalm Death are more extreme. If heaviness means downtuned sludge then yes there are heavier bands than death metal - Eyehategod etc - but death metal is about heaviness combined with speed, technicality and good old fashioned guts!

And Megadeth are neither heavy or extreme. They are (were) however a great band

I just saw Cryptopsy for the second time last night.
Man, Jon Levasseur is ****ing awesome. I was standing about 2 feet in front of him. It was awesome watching him play from that close. FLO did an amazing drum solo there as well.

Having seen him twice now, Martin is probably their best vocalist so far. He pulled off the long Open Face Surgery scream... just about anyways, he may have been a few seconds off, I don't know...but that's okay, Lord Worm couldn't do the whole thing live either.

Let him go! If you don't he'll hate you for a start but also it will be great exposure for your band. Even if you don't get the support all the reviews etc will say ..... from ....... is standing on drums and that means your band's name will be known by loads more people.

i finally decided to order Focus but i'll have to wait a few weeks to get it. also i ordered the new album from the biggest Slovenian black/death metal band called Noctiferia (i doubt any of you know them). the success they've had in Slovenia lately is amazing. they've been on top of video charts for five weeks now (some other band came on top for 2 days though). and this is only the second time a metal band's video was played there. i really like their music because it really creates this great atmosphere. so hopefully i'll get the CD soon!

I saw the Cannibal Corpse tour last night. When we got there Macabre was half way done with their set which pissed me off. But they're coming back in a month and at least I got to hear Vampire of Dusseldorf.

Next up was Hate Eternal. Wow. These guys played ****ing awesome. Derek Roddy is such a great drummer. He's so fast yet stays so relaxed. King of All Kings was the highlight song of their set.

Cannibal Corpse came on next. They also played a great set. I never really realized how great a bassist that Alex Webster was until last night. You hear his awesome lines and breaks on the cd, but ****, he's awesome live. The rest of the band sounded cool too. My favorites from their set were Stripped Raped and Strangled, Compelled to Lacerate, Skull...., and Hammer Smashed Face.

All in all it was a great show and I got to meet Erik Rutan and Alex Webster which was cool.

Well tonight i saw Cannible Corpse, Hate Eternal, Macabre, Deeds of Flesh, and Ornament of Disgrace. This was my first death metal concert, and probley my last. Honestly every song by every band seemed the exact same. All the drums were drowning out the guitars, you couldnt tell that a bass guitar was even there, and i dont think i caught a word any singer said all night. I will say this, every death metal fan i talked to at the show enjoyed it and really thought the bands were great. So if you are a death metal fan, than i would recomend the show. If you are a thrash metal fan who wants to try out a death metal show, than i woudlnt pay the money if you are not going to enjoy it. Besides the brutalness of the show, i cant see myself getting into that type of music. As i said before, for a death metal fan that would be a great show. I just wanted to see the bands and make the call for myself. Im glad i went so i know what they are like, but did not enjoy the bands. No offense to any bands of course, just my two cents.

hmm that's really odd. it was the fact I was a thrash fan that I got into death metal, I wanted to see where the next level of heaviness in music was, and it WAS death metal. admitedly, yes, it was a more melodic album that did (Heartwork by Carcass), but that is still some great death metal. anyway, each to their own.

can anyone recommend me any new DM bands to check out? i'm just getting bored of listening to the same stuff over again now (even Whisper Supremacy and Blasphemy Made Flesh  ) and has anyone else heard the controversy surround 'Eye For An Eye' by Deamon? they had a sound effect at the start of the album which sounds like a plane being hijacked by Middle Eastern people. they say it was recorded before the Sept 11 attack, but who knows?

Deeds of Flesh are well known for being monotome, Cannibal Corpse are too in the long run. Hate Eternal has 3 good songs and the rest isn't that great. So I wouldn't give up just yet if I where you. Try something with a more melodic approach the next time or goto a really good band like Immolation or Gorguts if they ever come to where you live.

When I saw Cannibal Corpse last week I noticed that their setlist was very diverse and they picked songs that had different and distict riffs and tempos. I thought that they played awesome.

I could see what you mean about Hate Eternal sounding monotone especially if you hadnt heard much of their albums.

Macabre sounded different too. I would recommend getting some of their stuff (download or buy) cause they are a really cool band.

Thanks Coypu. I actually listened to some stuff at a local cd shop by Cynic and Athiest (due to all the talk in the forum about them)and think it was alot better than the bands i saw last night. If i ever see anything by those bands, than i will make sure to give them a listen, thanks again for the advice.

F&B... don't give up so easily! You saw a brutal death metal show, and let me tell you, that is not the best way to get into extreme metal. Rather, check out these bands and download the song I list after the name... not all of them are exactly death metal, but they are bands that made my transition from thrash to DM a smooth one. I still find that I enjoy these bands more than any brutal material really...

Opeth - Blackwater Park
Dark Tranquillity - Cathode Ray Sunshine
Kalmah - Black Roija
Soilwork - Chainheart Machine
Arch Enemy - Ravenous
Children Of Bodom - Silent Night, Bodom Night
Death - Sacred Serenity
In Flames - Behind Space
Sentenced - Capture Of Fire
Shadows Fall - Montauk

For some weirder and jazzy stuff, take a look at Cynic or Athiest... I think Coypu has a fair amount of their stuff on Galaxen...

Coypu's right... and I STRONGLY recommend that you go see Immolation if they come... they put on the best live show I've ever seen. Even people that didn't know who they were going into the show thought they were farkin' amazing.

and Gorguts is just great... haven't seen 'em live, but I've heard they're good live. I don't think they'll be touring anytime soon though, sadly.

Thanks for all the advice guys! Honestly...i have listened to some stuff by suffocation, cynic, atheist, etc...and really cant get into the whole genre. I think its an aquired taste, death metal that is, and i gave it a few trys to like it but its just not working for me. Im really a classic rock fan more than anything, but i am glad i gave it a shot. But if i ever see that any death bands are comming to town i may go see them to give it another shot. Thanks again for all the help and understanding.

Thanks man! I actually do like some Nile stuff, i have the "In the beginning" cd and like some of the songs on it. They are comming to st.louis in early february and i want to see them. Morbid Angel was kinda pushing it for me, i have the "blessed are the sick" and "alters of madness" albums and didnt get to into them. I saw them at a used cd shop for $4.99 apiece so i figured why not get them. I may put them on later for another listen. I had a chance to see them with Pantera, but their tour bus broke and they missed the show...to bas soulfly had to play an extra long set...no fun watching that. Thanks for the advice on Nile, ill download some of the songs i dont have! You guys are more than kind on here!

I've got it!

Try Zimmer's Hole.

If you don't appreciate the musicianship, you'll at least love the humour. They also have one of the best vocalists in metal. They aren't full on death metal, but at times they are.

Try to find these songs.

Reanaconda
White Trash Momma
Bread
Death to the Dodgers of Soap
Satan is a gay Porno Star

I guarantee that some of those songs will at least make you smile. I tried to recommend the songs that have more straight ahead death metal qualities... except for Reanaconda... you just have to hear that one. :p

If you want songs that aren't death metal, but would probably make you laugh, try these.

Fully Packed
That's How Drunks Drink
Gaysong
Evil Robots

Vader is death metal, but as said before, early Slayer is basically death metal with non-death metal vocals, so thats probably why Vader sounds similar to them.

that's all of the more 'old school' death metal bands I can think of at the mo. most others have a little bit extra in them where they can be called another genre totally, like Meshuggah being Technical Death Metal and Opeth being Progressive Death Metal, summat like that

ive decided im buying a death album tomorrow, cryptopsy if they have one, or Nile , i really liked their stuff. This genre is growing on me lately. I really like the drumming, outrageously fast. FLo is awesome.

Immolation, not for the new really but if you like cryptopsy it shouldn't be a problem.

Slayer? Goths?

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA that is one of the funniest things I have ever heard. i bet your mates think that metal is 'goth' music, like everyone does here

by the way, what the **** is 'goth' music? I used to think black metal was (but that was two years ago), so is it just Cradle Of Filth and Manson now?Originally posted by #1DisturbedFan

I listen to

Disturbed
Morbid angel
Nile
Cannibal Corpse
Slayer
Mudvayne
Union Underground
Marilyn Manson

Manson isn't really death metal but his music is still pretty good.

only three of those bands are DM, yet they are all 'newbie' DM bands (the type people first get into, I saw a list Coypu did ages ago on em) if you wanna listen to better DM (not saying Nile or Morbid are bad, just there are better bands [IMO] who are out), ask Coypu or xAzagthothx.

oh yeh, I finally heard a Cynic song today, on my old Metal XS vid  Tony Choy is an amazing bassist, he was going like the clappers on those strings!

YES! Thank you sir for knowing who the hell Lykathea Aflame are. As to where to get some music, you can get most of Land Where Sympathy is Air in the Jukebox at Obscene (www.obscene.cz) , but if you have MSN or ICQ, I can send you all of Elvenefris. Grind_God@hotmail.com or 95968290 on ICQ.

As for the rest of you, do the same and find out how in-fùcking-credible Lykathea Aflame are.

Yeah the band with Dino and Tony. Its pretty cool. Spanish death metal so i have to laugh a little.

I only just got And Then You'll Beg about two weeks ago. It's a great cd except that the vocals are a bit disappointing. They aren't too bad but compared to Lord Worm's vocals they are average.

I always thought I was a pretty hardcore death metaller. I got my first DM album in the early 90's and ever since I've been to practically every DM gig in my extended area, bought thousands of records and demos, written fanzines etc

BUT last night.....

I didn't go to see Immolation because I went out with my girlfriend... :-( I feel so ashamed. I think I've let myself down. And I know the fact it was our two year anniversary is no excuse!

Hey Azagthoth, hows the new guitar, the B.C. Rich? I'm looking for a new guitar for metal playing and Im looking at Ibanez, ESP and BC rich. seeing as how you've had experience with two of the 3 brands, I'd like your opinion.

xAzagthothx
12-12-2002, 08:30 AM
oh man the guitar is ****ing amazing. its the best playing guitar ive ever owned. its a usa model though from the 80's, when the NJ series was actually made in america. it plays like a ****ing dream, as all BC Rich's do. only qualm about BC Rich's is that theyre neck heavy....if you let go the neck drops down towards the floor. its no big deal...but after playing for 4 hours standing up ur should can start to hurt lol.

i suggest any current NJ series BC Rich guitar, and then change the pickup to a Dimarzio X2N. best pickup ever. thats what i have in my Warlock.

Ibanez's are decent guitars. ive got 2. they play pretty nice, very very well balanced and light guitars. i love that about the RG series. necks are a little longer, but thats all.

havent had too much experience with ESP's. ive played a few....dont really like em.

i suggest getting a BC Rich. those guitars play like a dream.

The Depressed
12-12-2002, 08:39 AM
^^^^^

all of the above about BC Rich's are true. I tried my brother's band's guitarists Warlock a few days ago, and it is quality, except the neck weight. it plays like a dream.

I'm now deciding whether to start playing bass or save up for an NJ Series Mockingbird. it was my birthday yesterday, so I got the first of the cash \m/

LegionsofMarduk
12-12-2002, 10:27 AM
I really like ESP. They're just too damn expensive. Some of the LTD versions are ok...but it's like Gibson and Epiphone. With the cut in price, comes a cut in quality. Ibanez are decent guitars from what I've played. BC Rich are like you guys said. Really nice, play really good, but too heavy. I guess out of the 3 if I had the money, I'd get an ESP.

Generic crap eh? Hmmm, I believe that I can say that Death Metal is the most diverse musical genre in the world. Perhaps with the exception of Classical.
Melodic Death Metal such as Dark Tranquility, Gates of Ishtar, Kalmah, Ebony Tears.
Old school Death Metal such as Morbid Angel, Autopsyand Obituary.
Thrash Death Metal such as The Crown and The Haunted.
True Death Metal such as Cannibal Corpse, Vader and Nile.
Melodic Brutal Death such as Impaled and Ghoul.
Blackened Death Metal such as Immolation, Deicide, and Destroyer 666.
Brutal Death Metal such as Suffocation, Mortician, Cattle Decapitation, Origin, Cryptopsy.
Experimental Death Metal such as Gorguts, Cynic, Digestion.
Gore-grind such as Regurgitation, Disgorge, Compremesis.
Porno-grind such as Abuse, Waco Jesus, and **** & Ball Torture.
Humour-grind such as Anal Cunt, Jungle Rot and Leng T'che.
Crust-grind such as Phobia and Blood Duster
Technical Death Metal such as Athiest, Theory in Practice, Martyr.
Doom-Death Metal such as Shape of Despair and Evoken.

All generic eh? Speak out of wisdom not slipknot-inspired ignorance.

what i like about jazz is that it presents an expression of emotion, like all good music and art, but it doesn't limit itself to one emotion. death metal typically conveys anger and rage, but jazz can convey any feeling or thought in an incredibly subtle way. not bagging DM, just saying jazz fusion (gotta have the blues-rock fusion) is hard to beat, imho.

the thing is, you are very limited in your understanding of these bands. death metal is not a straightforward genre. each artist who embraces it uses subtle techniques and nuances to make it their own. the subcategories are endless, and have to do with:

a) the inclusion or exclusion of solos
b) the inclusion or exclusion of non-metal instruments and sounds
c) the use of melodic or purely sustained-note vocals
d) the intensity of sound and lyrical violence
e) the pace and complexity of the rhythm

the list goes on, but i've typed enough. sorry for my overly formal writing, but i'm stuck in end-of-school-year essay mode :)

the thing is, you are very limited in your understanding of these bands. death metal is not a straightforward genre. each artist who embraces it uses subtle techniques and nuances to make it their own. the subcategories are endless, and have to do with:

a) the inclusion or exclusion of solos
b) the inclusion or exclusion of non-metal instruments and sounds
c) the use of melodic or purely sustained-note vocals
d) the intensity of sound and lyrical violence
e) the pace and complexity of the rhythm

the list goes on, but i've typed enough. sorry for my overly formal writing, but i'm stuck in end-of-school-year essay mode :)

hear, hear

To make it simple : Compare the song Illuminatus by Gorguts with Red Harvest by Altar. Do they sound the same to you?
